Ladies' World Championship flashbacks

ABC Sports Online thought it would be interesting to take you back over the recent memories of the Ladies' competition at the World Championships. Take a moment to reflect on some of the moments that led to this year's World Championships in Vancouver, Canada.

2000: Kwan recaptures World title
Michelle Kwan regained the women's title at the World Figure Skating Championships, vaulting past two Russians by winning the free skating program. Kwan's smooth and elegant routine to music from the movie "Red Violin" earned her top scores, even though she skated first in the final group of six.

1999: Butyrskaya wins world title over Kwan
Maria Butyrskaya of Russia dethroned Michelle Kwan (USA) for the women's title at the World Figure Skating Championships today with a magnificent performance in the free skating. Butyrskaya was an artist on ice as she executed dynamic jumps, including seven triple jumps, exquisite footwork and powerful spins. The 26-year old Russian left no doubt about the outcome as she earned marks of 5.7 and 5.9 from the judges.

1998: Kwan and Russians capture worlds
Other than the names, not much changed from Nagano to Minneapolis. An American won the women's crown, Russians won everything else. Michelle Kwan capped an impressive but imperfect season when she won her second World Figure Skating Championships title. Kwan was joined by Todd Eldredge (men's silver) and Jenni Meno and Todd Sand (pairs) as Americans on the medals podium.

1997: Lipinski wins women's world title; Kwan second
Tara Lipinski won the women's title at the World Figure Skating Championships today to become the youngest women's champion in history. Michelle Kwan, the defending champion, was second. Kwan actually won the free skating with a superb artistic presentation. But being fourth after the short program put her too far behind to catch Lipinski.
