FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) _ The Miami Fusion and New England Revolution tied 1-1 Saturday night in Major League Soccer's first overtime game under this season's new rules.

In an appeal to soccer purists, the league abandoned the shootout used to break deadlocks and adopted the international standard, where games can end in ties.

The only departure is 10 minutes of sudden-death overtime if games are even after regulation.

The Fusion and Revolution each earned one point in the Eastern Division standings.

Roy Lassiter, the league's all-time leading scorer and Miami's celebrated offseason acquisition from D.C. United, sat out the opener with a toe injury.

New England's Imad Baba sent the match into overtime with his tying goal with 10 minutes remaining. Baba received a free kick from Ted Chronopoulos off the left wing and flicked a 12-yard, left-footed shot past Fusion goalkeeper Jeff Cassar.

The Fusion had taken a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute, on Diego Serna's header from 10 yards out. Serna missed Miami's final 13 matches last season after tearing right knee ligaments.

Serna's goal was set up by Andy Williams' free kick from the right wing.

Miami's best chance in the scoreless first half came on Williams' close shot that Causey deflected in the 26th minute.

New England threatened in the 42nd, when Wolde Harris dribbled inside the box and fired, but Cassar made the save.

Miami has never won a season opener in its three-year history.
