Pavon sends Mexico reeling

[Associated Press]

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras -- Carlos Pavon scored three goals as Honduras demolished the once-powerful Mexican soccer team 3-1 Wednesday night in a World Cup qualifier.

Mexico coach Enrique Meza quit immediately after the game, the sixth consecutive loss for a team that had been No. 4 in FIFA's world rankings only three years ago.

In other CONCACAF qualifying matches Wednesday, the front-runing United States beat Trinidad & Tobago 2-0 and Costa Rica edged Jamaica 2-1.

The victory puts Honduras (2-1-2) into strong position for one of three regional berths to the World Cup and leaves Mexico (1-3-1), the longtime power of the North and Central American and Caribbean region, facing a tough fight to regroup for its next game, against the United States on July 1.

Pavon beat Mexican goalkeeper Jorge Campos with a chest-high shot in the 31st minute and defender Ivan Guerrero, playing far forward, sent a pass to Pavon, who bounced a header past Campos in the 55th.

Pavon converted a penalty kick in the 64th after Campos fouled an onrushing David Suazo, who had beaten the defense.

Victor Ruiz scored for Mexico in the 86th minute.

Costa Rica 2, Jamaica 1
ALAJUELA, Costa Rica -- Costa Rica beat Jamaica in a game interrupted by a power failure, and remained on track to qualify for next year's World Cup.

Luis Marin scored in the fourth minute, but Onandi Lowe tied it for Jamaica in the ninth. Paulo Wanchope scored the go-ahead goal in the 38th.

The game was stopped in the 43rd minute because of a power failure and didn't resume for about a half hour.
