Myernick named assistant coach
[Associated Press]
CHICAGO -- U.S. goalkeeper Kasey Keller will rejoin the
American national team for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the championship
of soccer's North and Central American and Caribbean region.
Keller, who competes with Brad Friedel for the starting job, has
played just four games this season with Tottenham Hotspur: two in
the English Premier League and two in the League Cup.
The United States, which isn't using most of its Europe-based
regulars, opens Saturday against South Korea at the Rose Bowl in
Pasadena, Calif.
Also Tuesday, former Colorado Rapids coach Glenn Myernick was
hired as an assistant coach of the national team.
Myernick, 47, was an assistant to Bruce Arena at the 1996
Olympics. Arena became the national team coach in 1998.
Dave Sarachan remains as an assistant coach and Milutin Soskic
as the goalkeeper coach.
Myernick had 10 appearances as a player for the United States
and coached the Rapids from 1997 through 2000.
