Garcia's first international goal lifs Mexico

[Associated Press]

PASADENA, Calif. -- Jair Garcia scored his first international goal to give Mexico a 1-0 victory over El Salvador on Saturday in the first round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup soccer tournament at the Rose Bowl.

Mexico moved into first place in Group A with three points, and finishes group play Monday against Guatemala. El Salvador will meet the Guatemalans on Wednesday night in the final Group A match.

Garcia, a starting forward for CD Guadalajara playing in his first international game, converted a rebound in the 31st minute.

Salvadoran goalkeeper Santos Rivera dove to save Tomas Campos' 17-yard shot, but failed to control the rebound. The unmarked Garcia pounced on the loose ball and converted from 7 yards.

Garcia, 23, was one of seven Mexican players making their international debuts as starters or substitutes. Eleven of the 21 players in Mexico's pool for the Gold Cup are 25 or younger.

Mexican coach Javier Aguirre made an agreement with domestic and foreign clubs not to select the national team's regular players for the Gold Cup. In return, those players would be made available for an extended training camp before the World Cup.

The United States faced South Korea in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
