Canada, Costa Rica reach semis

[Associated Press]

MIAMI -- Jason Bent's goal in the seventh round of penalty kicks gave defending champion Canada a victory over Martinique in the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup on Saturday night.

In an earlier game, Ronald Gomez scored in the eighth minute of the first overtime to give Costa Rica a 2-1 victory over Haiti.

Canada advanced to Wednesday night's semifinals in Pasadena, Calif., against the winner of Sunday's United States-El Salvador match. Costa Rica plays the Mexico-South Korea winner in the other semifinal.

Canada and Martinique were tied at 1 after 120 minutes before Canada won it 6-5 in a shootout. Pascal Lina hit the right post for Martinique before Bent scored the game-winner.

After falling behind 1-0 on an own goal midway through the second half, Canada's Kevin McKenna tied the match with his third goal of the tournament in the 73rd minute.

In the first match, Gomez set up his game-winning 28-yard left footed shot while eluding four Haitian defenders. With his teammates pursuing Gomez, Haitian goalkeeper Geteau Ferdinand was screened and could not react to Gomez's shot, which landed inside the left post.

Gomez also assisted on Costa Rica's other goal.
