Canada settles for third at CONCACAF

[Associated Press]

PASADENA, Calif. -- Dwayne DeRosario scored his first goal of the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament Saturday to give Canada a 2-1 victory over South Korea in the third-place game.

DeRosario, who scored the winning goal for San Jose in overtime of last year's MLS Cup, broke a 1-1 tie against South Korea in the 35th minute.

Paul Stalteri used a back-heel pass through the legs of defender Choi Sung-Yong to send the ball to DeRosario, who converted from 12 yards while marked tightly by Song Chong-Gug.

Canada had tied the score one minute earlier on Kim Do-Hoon's own goal. Trying to clear a header by Canada's Jason DeVos, Kim instead headed the ball into his own net.

Kim gave South Korea a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute with a 19-yard shot off a post, and almost tied the score in the 49th minute. But goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld deflected Kim's 11-yard line drive.

Canada played without two injured starters, defender Carl Fletcher and midfielder Jason Bent, a former member of Colorado Rapids.

South Korea appeared as a guest in the tournament, the championship of the North and South American and Caribbean region.
