Captain Reyna back after missing Germany match
[Associated Press]
CHICAGO -- The U.S. soccer team announced a full-strength
roster Thursday for next week's World Cup tuneup at Ireland, the
first time this year all the top Americans will be together.
Eleven of the 18 players selected by coach Bruce Arena are with
European teams, and the roster for next Wednesday's game is close
to the 23-man World Cup roster that must be submitted to FIFA late
next month.
The top two goalkeepers, Kasey Keller and Brad Friedel, are on
the roster for the same game for just the second time this year.
Keller, who has started to play more regularly for Tottenham in
England, is 6-1 for the United States this year, losing at Germany.
Friedel, the starter for Blackburn Rovers in England, is 0-1,
having lost against Italy.
Among the missing are defender Carlos Llamosa, and forwards Ante
Razov and Jovan Kirovski. Captain Claudio Reyna returns after
missing the 4-2 loss at Germany because of a hamstring injury.
The United States is 2-3-2 against Ireland, going 2-0-1 in its
last three meetings. In the last meeting, Ireland beat the United
States 4-1 at Dublin in April 1992.
After the Ireland game, the U.S. team has remaining exhibitions
against Uruguay on May 12 at Washington; Jamaica on May 15 at East
Rutherford, N.J., and the Netherlands on May 19 at Foxboro, Mass.
The World Cup opens May 31.
