Irish captain, prime minister present check to NYC firefighters

DUBLIN -- U.S. coach Bruce Arena praised Ireland's World Cup team for its generosity after a prematch contribution made on Wednesday to benefit those affected by the September 11 terror attacks in the United States.

Ireland defender Stephen Staunton and Prime Minister Bertie Ahern presented a check for $237,700 to New York City firefighters Kevin Gallagher and Jack Ginty who were flown to Dublin for the World Cup warm-up friendly against the U.S. team by the Irish Football Association (FAI).

"Speaking on behalf of U.S. Soccer, we are extremely touched by the generosity of the Irish people," said Arena. "I just can't put it into words for that gesture.

"The game is one thing, the World Cup is another. The real story is how people can get along and are civil. Hopefully one thing can be gained from September 11 and that is how it's helping bring people together."

In addition to the Irish team donating their pay from a March 27 friendly against Denmark, members of the Dublin Fire Brigade took up a collection during the Denmark match while the FAI also made a contribution.

The donation was made to the U.S.-based 9-11 Fund.
