Riise's late PK beats San Jose
[Associated Press]
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Hege Riise scored on a free kick in the 85th minute to give the Carolina Courage a 2-1 win over the San Jose CyberRays on Saturday.
San Jose's Brandi Chastain and Carolina's Danielle Slaton did not play for their WUSA teams because they were in the lineup for the U.S. women's national team in an exhibition match against Finland, the second game of the doubleheader.
San Jose (1-2) had several chances to score but struggled against Carolina (2-0), the worst team in WUSA last season.
It was Carolina's first win in four tries against San Jose, the
defending league champions.
San Jose's Katia tied it in the 71st minute, taking a pass from
Theresa Wagner, moving past two Carolina defenders and beating
goalkeeper Kristin Luckenbill with a near-post shot.
Luckenbill made a variety of clutch saves, including one on a
point-blank shot by Pretinha in the 41st minute.
Fotopoulos scored the first goal in the sixth minute, taking a
ball that deflected off San Jose midfielder Dianne Alagich and
easily sliding it into the net from five yards out.
Beat 1, Freedom 0
ATLANTA -- Charmaine Hooper scored during injury time, giving Atlanta a 1-0 victory over Washington.
Hooper, who entered the game in the 74th minute, broke free after a long punt by Beat goalkeeper Briana Scurry was headed toward the goal by Homare Sawa.
Atlanta (1-2) improved to 4-0 overall against Washington (1-2),
with all four games decided by one goal.
Charge 2, Power 1
UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Kelly Smith scored on a penalty kick in the 89th minute to lift Philadelphia past New York.
Power goalkeeper Saskia Webber fouled Marinette Pichon in the penalty area, resulting in the penalty kick and a red card. Smith then beat backup goalkeeper Nicole Williams, making her WUSA debut.
New York (1-2) opened the scoring on Emily Janss' goal in the
17th minute, and Philadelphia (2-0) tied it on Mary-Frances
Monroe's goal off a corner kick.
Spirit 2, Breakers 2
BOSTON -- Bettina Weigmann scored on a penalty kick in the
46th minute to give Boston a tie with San Diego.
Shauna Rohbock scored the first two goals of her career for the Spirit (1-1-1), who set a WUSA record with six goals in their last game but were held scoreless in the second half of this one.
Maren Meinert also scored for the Breakers (1-1-1).
