Rotterdam grants coach's release

[Reuters]

AMSTERDAM -- Sparta Rotterdam coach Frank Rijkaard has quit as coach after the club was relegated from the Dutch first division.

"Frank Rijkaard told the Sparta board that he did not want to complete his contract with Sparta. Sparta accepted this and decided not to stand in his way," the club said on its Web site.

Sparta dropped out of the Dutch first division for the first time since the introduction of professional soccer in the Netherlands in 1956 during relegation playoffs earlier this month.

Last week Rijkaard, a former Dutch national team coach, received a death threat attached to a bullet. The letter threatened him and his family if he did not part company with the club immediately. The club said it would not yield to the threat.
