Seaman to stay with Arsenal

[Reuters]

LONDON -- England's World Cup goalkeeper David Seaman has signed a new one-year contract with English champions Arsenal.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger announced after a 6-1 friendly victory at minor league club Stevenage Borough late on Wednesday that Seaman had agreed to stay with the London club until at least the end of the 2002-03 season.

The 38-year-old goalkeeper made the headlines after a costly mistake in England's 2-1 World Cup quarterfinal defeat by Brazil last month.

"I'm pleased that David has signed the contract, but there was never any doubt that he would sign," Wenger told the Sun newspaper.

"I never imagined David leaving Arsenal at this stage of his career and I am sure he will come back stronger and more determined like he has always been.

"The World Cup was a big disappointment for him, but he is determined to come back and keep going and I hope he carries on with England."

Seaman, who has won 73 international caps, joined Arsenal from Queen's Park Rangers for 1.3 million pounds ($2.04 million) in May 1990.

He has made 377 league appearances for Arsenal and last season helped the Gunners win the premier league and FA Cup double.
