Houllier not convinced of Bowyer's talents

LIVERPOOL, England -- Liverpool has called off a proposed transfer by Lee Bowyer because manager Gerard Houllier is not convinced the Leeds United midfielder has the qualities required to play at Anfield.
"Liverpool Football Club have decided not to go ahead with the proposed transfer of Lee Bowyer for a variety of reasons," said a statement on Liverpool's official Web site.
"Manager Gerard Houllier was not convinced the player had either the hunger or desire to play for the club, qualities which are essential for any Liverpool player."
Bowyer, 25, has refused to sign a new contract at Elland Road which the club said was worth about nine million pounds.
Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale said last week the Premier League club had received an acceptable offer for Bowyer, who had been a success in the England under-21 side and helped to guide Leeds to the European Champions League semi-finals in the 2000-01 season.
"Obviously we don't want to lose Lee but he's made the decision not to sign a new contract," Ridsdale said.
Last December, Bowyer was cleared of all charges relating to an attack on a student in Leeds city centre in January 2000. His Leeds teammate Jonathan Woodgates was found guilty of affray by Hull Crown Court and sentenced to 100 hours community service.
Lawyers acting for the student, Sarfraz Najeib, later issued a civil action against Bowyer.
Bowyer, who was fined by Leeds for being under the influence of alcohol on the night of the incident, was stung by his punishment and initially refused to accept the fine.
He then rejected the offer of a new five-year contract.
