Dinu gets the boot

[Reuters]

BUCHAREST -- Romania champions Dinamo Bucharest have sacked coach Cornel Dinu less than a month after he took over and two days after his side were knocked out of the Champions League qualifying rounds.

"The Dinamo Bucharest board decided to fire Cornel Dinu as coach because of the team's poor performance," the club said in a statement on Friday.

Dinamo lost 1-0 at home to Club Bruges on Wednesday for an aggregate 4-1 defeat in the second qualifying round of the Champions League.

Dinu, previously the club's general manager, took over in July from Florin Marin, who resigned "for personal reasons" after just 29 days in the job.

The club said deputy coach Cornel Talnar would step in as caretaker until a new coach is appointed next week.

Former Romanian international Gheorghe Hagi, who spent six months in charge of the national team until November last year, has been linked with Dinamo in local media reports.

Dinamo face Romanian Cup holders Rapid Bucharest in a Romanian Super Cup match to open the new season on Saturday.
