Juninho likely to miss start of season

[Reuters]

MIDDLESBROUGH, England -- Middlesbrough's Brazilian forward Juninho will miss the start of the English Premier League season after damaging his left knee in Saturday's friendly against Italian side Modena.

The 29-year-old, who rejoined Boro for the third time when he signed from Atletico Madrid for 3.2 million pounds ($4.89 million) after helping Brazil win this year's World Cup, is suffering with a cruciate ligament injury.

"It's too early to say how long he will be out for, but it's obviously a serious injury," Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren told the club's Web site.

"Juninho will see a specialist in the near future, after which we'll have a clearer idea about the extent of the injury. It's a huge blow not only for the club but for the little man himself.

"All we can do now is wish Juninho a speedy recovery."

Boro open their Premier League campaign at Southampton on Saturday.
