MANILA, Philippines -- Manny Pacquiao has taken the seat as a newly elected Philippine congressman and quoted American poet Robert Frost -- and famed ring announcer Michael Buffer -- in his first House speech.
Pacquiao, who will fight former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito in November after winning the May national elections, promised to work to uplift his southern home province from poverty that he had overcome. He says he knows what it feels to be without a home and "I know what it's like to go hungry."
After quoting a line from Frost's poem, Pacquiao caused laughter among fellow lawmakers by imitating Buffer's famous line of "Let's get ready to rumble!"
The 31-year-old Pacquiao passed a high school equivalency test in 2007 and recently enrolled in legislative courses.
