The joy of reaching the 2006 World Cup final, against all the odds, was short-lived for France. Les Bleus were embarrassed at Euro 2008, then stuck with Raymond Domenech and needed the playoffs to qualify for this summer's showpiece. A big assist, the Irish will remind, went to a Swedish referee. Morale further dipped when Spain, the tournament favorite, crushed France in a friendly at the Stade de France last month.
