NEARLY 22 YEARS AGO, Aron Johannsson's parents wanted to study abroad, and the couple from Iceland had their hearts set on the USA. As in the University of South Alabama. "My sister went there, and we had friends from Iceland on the school's soccer team," says Johannsson's mother, Helga, two decades after returning to Reykjavik. "That's why we chose USA."

Now U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann wants their son to do the same.

Johannsson, who was born in Mobile, Ala., but moved to Iceland at age 3, has emerged as a top prospect while playing in the Danish Superliga for AGF Aarhus. The 22-year-old striker's most striking highlight: an August hat trick scored in 3 minutes and 50 seconds, the fastest in Superliga history.
