AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- Australian qualifier Greg Jones beat sixth-seeded Austrian Jurgen Melzer 7-6 (7), 6-2 on Tuesday in the first round of the Heineken Open.

The 23-year-old Jones, whose ranking fell from 187th to 373rd in 2012, got his first ATP Tour victory against the 29th-ranked Melzer.
