Matt Waxman wins WSOPC A.C. main event
Matt Waxman eclipsed the $1 million mark in career earnings (including live and online play) with his victory in the 352-player field at the WSOP Circuit Atlantic City main event. The $1,650 buy-in boasted the second-largest WSOPC main event field of the season and many top players who made the trip hoping to earn the next automatic entry into the WSOP's national championship, which will take place in May 2011.
Eric Harkins/IMPDIWith the victory, Matt Waxman earned automatic entry into the WSOP's national championship to be held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in 2011.Waxman, a 25-year-old professional poker player from Parkland, Fla., plays online under the alias "BigStackBBQ" and has nine WSOP cashes -- with five coming in 2010. This was his second-largest score in his live career; he finished sixth in the $5,000 six-handed no-limit hold 'em event in 2009, which sent $138,393 his way. However, online is where Waxman made his mark, winning the prestigious Full Tilt Online Poker Series XIII main event for $453,663. In that $500 buy-in event, Waxman outlasted a huge field of 5,306 for the win. Even though the money for this WSOPC win isn't anywhere near the online score, Waxman was thrilled to finally break through in live action.
"I've been winning a lot of major online tournaments but only coming close in the live ones, so it really feels great to lock one up," said Waxman to the WSOP. "There are so many great players out there nowadays that it gets harder each year to stand out from the pack."
Waxman faced Jesus Cabrera heads-up for the title and the battle included some tough beats for both players. Cabrera's turn to get lucky came with a river nine with A-9 versus the A-K of Waxman. After battling back to regain the chip lead, Waxman got lucky with 3-3 versus Cabrera's 6-6 to wrap up the tournament. The 46-year-old Cabrera earned $72,824 for the second-place finish.
Notable finishers include Matt Glantz (16th), Josh Brikis (20th) and Chris Tryba (35th).
Here's a look at the final table results:
1. Matt Waxman ($117,797)

Small blinds: A field of 563 players headed to the European Poker Tour stop in Prague. Fewer than 100 players remain with only 80 players making the money. First place pays 640,000 euros. Issac Haxton will face "Isildur1" in the first "Isildur1 SuperStar Showdown". On Sunday at 6 p.m. ET, Haxton and Isildur1 will face off in a heads-up cash game for 2,500 hands of $50/$100 no-limit hold 'em. Both players will have a bankroll of $150,000 and the winner is whoever has the most at the end of the session. The players are not only playing for the cash on the table but an additional $30,000. Tom Dwan edged out a small win over Dan Cates in the "Durrrr challenge" to bring his deficit to only $555,000. The two have played 12,976 out of the 50,000 hands. The next season of High Stakes Poker will not include Full Tilt Poker sponsored players. No Dwan. No Ivey. No Patrik. No viewers? I'm not sure of the reasoning, but it's no surprise that many fans are angered by their absence. Don't forget to vote for your favorites in Bluff's Readers Choice awards. Las Vegas' newest hotel, The Cosmopolitan, is opening without a poker room.
