Wayne Rooney held on bench
MANCHESTER, England -- Wayne Rooney was dropped from Manchester United's starting lineup for the Premier League match against West Bromwich Albion.
The striker was left on the bench Saturday, days after contradicting manager Alex Ferguson by denying that he had missed games because he has been struggling with an ankle injury.
Rooney played 90 minutes for England in the 0-0 draw against Montenegro on Tuesday.
But Javier Hernandez started up front alongside Dimitar Berbatov, despite only arriving back from Mexico late on Thursday.
Ferguson played down any feud with Rooney on Friday, saying, "It's water off a duck's back really, and it doesn't mean anything."
