Megan Rapinoe's game-winning assist vs. Italy in the second leg of their World Cup qualifying playoff helped earn the United States a spot in the 2011 Women's World Cup. She returned to the U.S. women's national team lineup in 2008 after missing all of 2006 and 2007 because of two ACL injuries. She scored her first two career goals on Oct. 1, 2006, but suffered an ACL injury four days later with her college team, the Portland Pilots.

Rapinoe was the second overall pick in the inaugural Women's Professional Soccer draft in 2009 and played two seasons with the Chicago Red Stars, scoring three goals. When the Red Stars ceased operations, she joined the Philadelphia Independence for the 2011 season. Despite playing just 60 games in college because of injuries, she scored 30 goals and 28 assists for Portland.

At the 2011 World Cup, Rapinoe performed well as both a substitute and starter for the U.S. team, scoring once in group play before providing the last-minute assist on Abby Wambach's goal that sent the quarterfinal with Brazil to penalties.
