Tobin Heath

Tobin Heath is a midfielder for the U.S. women's national team and plays for Sky Blue FC of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS). A key member of three NCAA championship teams while at North Carolina, she was the number one selection in the WPS draft and won a gold medal with the U.S. team at the 2008 Olympics.

Born on May 29, 1988 in Basking Ridge, N.J., Tobin Heath was a three-time Parade All-American in soccer at Ridge High School. The talented midfielder was the New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year for her junior season, when she committed early to attend the University of North Carolina.

Heath made an immediate impact in college soccer, helping to lead the Tar Heels to an NCAA Championship in her freshman season. She recorded four goals and nine assists from the left of midfield and was a consensus freshman All-American. The energetic playmaker was a regular in the UNC lineup throughout her four years -- earning three NSCAA First Team All-America selections -- as the Heels captured two more national titles (in her junior and senior seasons). Heath finished her UNC career with 19 goals and 32 assists and was the first runner-up for the 2009 M.A.C. Hermann Trophy, given annually to college soccer's top player.

The 5-foot, 6-inch midfielder was a reserve for the U.S. team at the 2008 Olympics. Heath appeared in three games for the American side that defeated Brazil in the title game to win the gold medal. One of the more technically-skilled members of the national team, Heath was named as U.S. Soccer's Young Female Athlete of the Year for 2009.

As the number one overall pick in 2010 WPS Draft, Heath was selected by the expansion Atlanta Beat. An ankle injury kept her off the field for most of her rookie campaign, but she did appear in three games. Following the season, she was involved in a trade that sent her to Sky Blue FC (in her home state of New Jersey), where she was reunited with college teammate Casey Nogueira for the 2011 WPS season.

Heath made her first World Cup appearances as a substitute for the U.S team in its run to the final of the 2011 tournament. In the final against Japan, Heath came on late and had an attempt at a game-winning goal blocked, before missing one of the Americans attempts in the penalty shootout as Japan claimed its first World Cup title.
