Former Wimbledon champ Martinez quits match

LINZ, Austria -- Former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez
quit her second-round match against sixth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova
of Slovakia at the Generali Ladies Open on Thursday because of an
arm injury.

"It hurt too much," said Martinez, who lost 2-6, 6-0, 3-1.
"There was no way I could play on."

In other second-round matches, third-seeded Nadia Petrova of
Russia defeated Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden 6-3, 6-3, and Ai Sugiyama
of Japan beat Gisela Dulko of Argentina 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Martinez, a 33-year-old Spaniard and 1994 Wimbledon winner, won
the first set with a good serve-and-volley game. Hantuchova then
began attacking Martinez's serves and evened the match. In the
third set, a weakened Martinez stopped after dropping serve.

"It is pretty unlucky she could not continue," Hantuchova
said. "Winning like this is no fun."
