Hernandez upsets Hanescu

BUCHAREST, Romania -- Oscar Hernandez upset top-seeded Victor Hanescu of Romania 7-6 (5), 6-4 Tuesday in the first round of the BCR Open Romania.

The unseeded Spaniard broke three times and dropped serve twice at BNR Arenas as Hanescu lost in the opening round for the second straight year.

Another unseeded Spaniard, Santiago Ventura, defeated fourth-seeded Igor Andreev of Russia 6-4, 6-1. Second-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain also advanced, defeating Simone Bolelli of Italy 6-4, 6-3.

Sixth-seeded Daniel Koellerer of Austria, who was making his debut in the main draw at the BCR Open, edged Italian veteran Filippo Volandri 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, and 18-year-old Marius Copil of Romania defeated Victor Crivoi of Romania 6-3, 6-2.

Also, third-seeded Juan Monaco of Argentina defeated Julio Silva of Brazil 6-2, 6-4, and fifth-seeded Alberto Montanes of Spain beat Potito Starace of Italy 6-4, 6-2.
