Andy Roddick easily won the opening matches in his 13th consecutive U.S. Open. Roddick won the U.S. Open juniors championship in 2000 and is one of only two men to win both the boys' and men's singles titles in New York.

Roddick had a disappointing year at the major tournaments in 2012. He retired with a right hamstring injury in the second round at the Australian Open, fell in the first round at Roland Garros and reached the third round at Wimbledon, where he previously reached the finals three times.
