All-Time Super Bowl Team - SS


On Jan. 26, 2006, at 9 p.m. ET, ESPN will unveil The Ultimate Super Bowl 40-Man Roster in advance of Super Bowl XL. A distinguished panel of voters, all of whom have covered all 39 Super Bowls, will cast their ballots to determine the first 39 spots. What about the 40th? Well, that's where you come in.

The panel will select 18 players on offense (including starters and backups), 18 on defense (including starters and backups), a kicker, a punter and a kick returner for a total of 39 roster spots. The 40th spot will go to the player with the highest vote total from SportsNation that was not already picked by the panel.

Strong safeties are up in Week 7. Each of the 11 players on the list played in multiple Super Bowls and all but one earned at least two rings during his career. The Cowboys and Steelers claim six of the 10 spots, including recent Dallas standout Darren Woodson (above) and three of his predecessors .

Cast your vote for your all-time Super Bowl strong safeties (pick your top five):

  • Dick Anderson (Dolphins) - Started in three straight Super Bowls with Miami (VI-VIII), winning the last two. In SB VII, Anderson helped lead a unit that held Washington to no offensive points and forced three turnovers in a 14-7 victory. It was more of the same in SB VIII, as Miami forced two turnovers in a 24-7 win.
     
  • Tyrone Braxton (Broncos) - Won consecutive Super Bowls with Denver. In SB XXXII, Braxton intercepted one pass as part of a defense that forced three Green Bay turnovers and thwarted the Packers on their final drive as Denver pulled a 31-24 upset. He then helped force four Atlanta turnovers in a 34-19 victory in SB XXXIII.
     
  • Tom Brown (Packers) - Won two straight Super Bowls with Green Bay. Brown was a member of a Packers defense that limited the Chiefs to 10 points in Super Bowl I, and shut them out in the second half. He then helped the Packers force three Oakland turnovers and allow just 14 points in Super Bowl II.
     
  • Thomas Everett (Cowboys) - Won back-to-back Super Bowls with the Cowboys. Everett picked off two passes to lead a charge that forced nine turnovers and scored two defensive TDs in a 52-17 rout of the Bills in SB XXVII, then helped forced three more Buffalo turnovers and produced another score as Dallas shut out the Bills in the second half of a 30-13 victory in SB XXVIII.
     
  • Cornell Green (Cowboys) - Played in two straight Super Bowls, winning one. Green was part of an effort that forced seven Baltimore turnovers in a 16-13 loss to the Colts in SB V. Dallas then shut down the Dolphins in Super Bowl VI, a 24-3 Cowboys win in which Miami became the only team in SB history not to score a touchdown.
     
  • Rodney Harrison (Patriots) - A two time Super Bowl champion with New England, Harrison helped hold Carolina in check early in a thrilling 32-29 win in SB XXXVIII. Just last season he was the defensive catalyst with two interceptions and a sack in the Patriots' 24-21 triumph over Philadelphia in SB XXXIX.
     
  • Donnie Shell (Steelers) - Won four Super Bowls with Pittsburgh, including two as a starter. Shell was a reserve on the Steelers defenses that forced eight combined turnovers and just 17 total points in wins over the Vikings in SB IX and the Cowboys in SB X, then started in wins over the Cowboys in SB XIII and the Rams in SB XIV.
     
  • Mike Wagner (Steelers) - Started and won all three Super Bowl appearances with the Steelers (IX, X, XIII). Wagner had an interception as Pittsburgh held the Vikings to 119 yards and no offensive points in a 16-6 win in SB IX, picked off another pass in a 21-17 victory over Dallas in SB X and was part of a 35-31 win against the Cowboys in SB XIII.
     
  • Charlie Waters (Cowboys) - Played in five Super Bowls with Dallas (V, VI, X, XII, XIII), winning two. Waters started at free safety in a 16-13 loss to the Colts in SB V and was a backup in a dominating 24-3 victory over the Dolphins in SB VI. He started at strong safety in his last three appearances, a 21-17 loss to the Steelers in SB X, a 27-10 victory over Denver in SB XII - a game in which Dallas forced eight turnovers - and a 35-31 loss to the Steelers in SB XIII.
     
  • Carlton Williamson (49ers) - Won two Super Bowls in two tries with San Francisco. Williamson helped force four turnovers and was part of arguably the best goal line stand in Super Bowl history in a 26-21 win over the Bengals in SB XVI, then helped hold Dan Marino and the Dolphins in check in a 38-16 victory in SB XIX.
     
  • Darren Woodson (Cowboys) - Earned three Super Bowl rings in four years with the Cowboys. Woodson was a backup in the Cowboys' nine-turnover effort in a 52-17 win over the Bills in SB XXVII, then started the following year as Dallas shut out Buffalo in the second half of a 30-13 victory. He then started and helped force three Steelers turnovers in a 27-17 triumph in SB XXX.
