Chat with Jerome Harrison
![]() |
Harriso, who led the nation with 1,900 rushing yards, was recently announced as a finalist for the 2005 Doak Walker Award honoring the nation's top running back. He joins fellow finalists Reggie Bush of USC and DeAngelo Williams of Memphis. The recipient of the award will be announced on The Home Depot 2005 College Football Awards Show (live on ESPN, Thursday, Dec. 8, from 7-9 p.m. ET!)
Harrison set a Pac-10 conference record by rushing for 100 yards or more in 14 consecutive games. Despite his numbers, the Cougars finished 4-7 this season, beating Washington in the Apple Cup for its only conference win.
Send your questions now and join Harrison in The Show on Thursday at noon ET!
Jerome Harrison (11:59 AM)
How you doing? I appreciate all the support, thanks for everything this year. Let's chat.
Kristen (Washington DC)
Jerome--Great job this year!!! Do you think the Pac-10 as a whole are over looked nationally?
Jerome Harrison (12:01 PM)
Well, Kristen, yes and no. We've got the best team in college football in SC. And breakout teams like UCLA and Oregon get a lot of attention, plus, since so many great athletes come out of this conference we are noticed. So, I think we are underlooked, but we do get a good share of attention.
hayden (utah N of SLC)
is WSU in Seattle?
Jerome Harrison (12:02 PM)
It's about four hours away from Seattle. We're down on the southeast part of Washington.
Roger : Nashville, TN
You have all the qualities that a great back has: speed, strength, quickness, durabilty and determination. I wish your team was bowling this winter, just so I could keep watching you tear up defences.
Jerome Harrison (12:02 PM)
Thanks Roger, I really apprecaite all the support. I wish we were going bowling, too!
Corey (Selah, WA)
Congratulations Ghost, it was an honor to watch you every game this year. You are amazing and will do well at the next level. From one Coug to another.
Paul (Detroit)
how did you get that nickname?
Jerome Harrison (12:04 PM)
The DB coach gave it to me, I had an impressive run in spring ball and Coach Green started calling me that the next day. It just kind of stuck with me.
Marlowe, Alaska
You had one of the most successful games against USC that a tailback has had in recent memory, what will it take to beat the Trojans?
Jerome Harrison (12:06 PM)
An NFL team. (laughing) Those guys are just so good on offense, and they have a great coach in Pete Carroll. I don't know, it will be very hard to beat Troy.
Dan (Chicago)
Jerome, who should win the heisman, Reggie or Vince?
Jerome Harrison (12:06 PM)
Oooh. You know me, I've got to go with the Pac-10 player, baby!
JAXON (TX)
Jerome do you like the current bowl game strucure in college football or do you believe a playoff would be a better system
Jerome Harrison (12:08 PM)
I believe playoffs would be a better system, but college football is so physical and I think a playoffs opens the door to a lot of injuries, it would be good, but it would take its toll on athletes bodies. A lot of guys have to get ready to go on to the Senior Bowl or the East-West Bowl, that's a lot of games and a lot of chances to get hurt.
Edo (Seattle)
Jerome, congrats on your amazing season, and too bad about the Heisman ceremony. How will the Cougs be at running back next year? What kind of style compared to you will the starter have next year? Thanks for the win against the Huskies this year! GO COUGS!
Jerome Harrison (12:10 PM)
Thanks for all the support, Edo. The Cougs will be good next year, they have a lot of guys coming back. McCall, Woolrich and Tardy will all be around at RB next year. I don't think any of them play like me, but they are all successful with their own running styles.
Brian (Indy)
Should Oregon have gotten to Tempe, or do you thinik ND deserved the bid? I know your pac 10, but look at this from unbiased opinion. Great year man.
Jerome Harrison (12:11 PM)
I think Oregon should have went -- they only lost to the two-time defending national champs. What else could they do?
Will (seattle)
Great season Ghost, we enjoyed watching you slice up defences each week. What are your plans in terms of preparing for the draft?
Jerome Harrison (12:12 PM)
I'm already working out, lifting weights. I have to sit down with both of my parents and try and make the decision whether to leave school and then come back to finish up the following year or stay in school and work out on campus.
Richard (Music City)
Are you going to attend the combine? What do you anticipate your 40 time as?
Jerome Harrison (12:13 PM)
Yeah, I will probably go to the combine, and I have no clue what I will run the 40 in ... hopefully a real good one though.
Cayne (Federal Way, WA)
Jerome... are you nervous to face the combine... it seems to be a stressful situation, and can really affect your draft grade. Any specific preparations?
Jerome Harrison (12:14 PM)
Nah, I don't let too many things get to me. I've been in hostile environments before and I think I stay pretty calm and collected. I just have to go out there and do what I can and don't let it get to me.
hayden (utah N of SLC)
Congradulations on making the All-Pac-10 team! Do you think anyone was left off the list?
Jerome Harrison (12:14 PM)
Yeah, I think Jason Hill was left off the first team.
Dan (Chicago)
Jerome, great season, if there is any team you wished to be drafted by, who would it be?
Jerome Harrison (12:16 PM)
I rooted for the Dertoit Lions growing up ... Barry Sanders is the greatest RB ever to play the game. When he left, I left. If I could be drafted by anybody, I'd say the Atlanta Falcons because W.Dunn and I have similar playing style.
Noah (Fresno)
What was your best and worst games at wazu?
Jerome Harrison (12:17 PM)
My worst game ever was against USC my first year out of junior college. My best game was probably against UCLA, this year.
Finn (Washington)
Jerome, who do you go for, for direction and how to go about the most rigorous offseason of your career?
Jerome Harrison (12:19 PM)
I talk to my father, of course. And I talk to guys who have gone to Washington State and are now in teh NFL. And, I was blessed to be on a plane with Marshall Faulk for 2 and a half hours Monday morning, so that converstation helped!
CPT Gerald Mantanona US Army, Taji, Iraq WSU 98'
Jerome, Congratulations on a great performance this season. As a Cougar Alumni (now in the Army here in Iraq), I always follow the Cougs. If Jason Hill is projected to get drafted outside the 2nd round, please convince him to stay. Although he is very talented, He could use that extra year to refine his skills and help win games for the WSU! Case in point, look at what happened to Devard Darling, the last Coug to leave early. What are your thoughts on this? Also, I wish the best for you in the NFL, and I hope that the Raiders draft you, to get that thunder & lightning combo in the backfield with Lamont Jordan! God Bless! Captain Gerald Mantanona US Army Taji, Iraq WSU 98'
Jerome Harrison (12:22 PM)
Thank you Gerald -- you're a bigger star than I am. I appreciate what you are doing for this country. Thanks for supporting the Cougs, too. I think Jason Hill should stay, too, and I think he will. He's close to getting his degree and that means a lot to him and his mother and his family. I don't think you can compare him to Devard Darling, I think they are different guys, I think that if Jason did leave, he would be successful in the NFL, but I think that he will stay another year. ... Thanks again, Gerald.
Danny (Bellingham)
Other than football, is Pullman really that great of a town?
Jerome Harrison (12:23 PM)
That's a Pullman secret, Danny. (laughing) You gotta be there to understand. There are a lot of great things that go on besides football.
Mark (Pullman)
Jerome, with it being about 1 degree outside right now, are you a guy who likes to play in a cold city in the snow or would you rather play someplace warm?
Jerome Harrison (12:24 PM)
It really doesn't matter. I'm from Michigan, so I grew up playing in the cold. Just as long as I can continue playing football -- that's all that matters.
Jonah (Aptos)
Jerome, you guys had four games this year where you lost by 4 points or less, what was the difference in those games? Did losing like that each week hurt the morale of the team?
Jerome Harrison (12:26 PM)
Yeah, those losses hurt. I don't know how we lost them, it just seemed like the team was snakebit. We had a lot of top ranked teams beat and we just let it slip away in the fourth quarter. Sure, those losses hurt, but we had some great senior leadership on the field and in the lockerroom and they didn't let anybody put their head down.
Brandon (Columbus, OH)
I am just glad you went to Wash. St and not them Wolverines, but you didn't want to did you?
Jerome Harrison (12:27 PM)
Oh yeah, you always grow up saying you are going to go to Michigan -- Running Back High! But I had to get away from home and become my own man.
Craig (Kalamazoo, MI)
JC- what was it like coming out of Kalamazoo Central High School? Was it an easy transition from Kzoo to California and the West Coast? Best of luck, GO GIANTS!
Jerome Harrison (12:29 PM)
Yeah, it was pretty easy ... but, it was rough because junior college doesn't give any scholarships. But, I had great support from my family and when I got to sweet old Pullman, everything else was history!
Amir: Kalamazoo, Michigan
JC- Fellow KC Giant here, I just wanted to let you know I really enjoyed tracking you through your college career.
Kevin , Kalamazoo MI
JC, Congrats on your success at WSU and becoming a Sports Illustrated first team All-American. As a Kalamazoo Central graduate I am proud of both you and Greg for working your tails off throughout your college careers. Hope to see you next year in the NFL. Go Giants!
Jerome Harrison (12:31 PM)
Thanks for all the support! Nothing but love back in Kalamazoo!
Sean (Philadelphia)
What's your take on a player like Terrell Owens?
Jerome Harrison (12:33 PM)
TO is an outstanding athlete, first things first, the guy can play football. As for the extra activity, I don't agree with some things he says and does, but there are some things I understand. I mean, he is the best WR in the country, just like the best doctor in the country, or something, he should be treated and paid like the best, not like the tenth. So, I understand where he is coming from on some issues, but I think there was a better way to go about it.
Jerome Harrison (12:35 PM)
Alright folks, I guess David Stern is up next, I've got no business with him so it's time for me to sign off I'm over here watching the best of Michael Jackson -- that boy was bad! I got to get back to the top five.
Jerome Harrison (12:35 PM)
Thanks so much for all the love and support. I really, really appreciate it, I love you guys.
The ShowGirl (12:35 PM)
Thanks Jerome!
Mat (Scottsdale, AZ)
Uhh...is the Commissioner of the NBA really getting second billing to Jerome Harrison?
The ShowGirl (12:36 PM)
No way, Mat, I was just letting our boy get back to MJ on VH1. We know our priorities! Take care everybody, thanks for logging on with Jerome today.
