THE PULSE (5:52 PM)
We'll be live on ESPNEWS from 1-4 ET on Dec. 24, SportsNation. So take a break from those holiday plans and talk sports with us on Saturday. With a full slate of NFL games and Sunday's big NBA showdowns, not to mention bowl games, hot stove baseball and more, we'll have plenty to talk about.
THE PULSE (5:52 PM)
If you've got a comment on any of those topics, or a question for a guest, go ahead and fire it off right now! We'll save 'em for the show.
THE PULSE (11:14 AM)
Anyone have questions for Gary Payton?
Tony (Philly)
Gary with Pat Riley now coaching do you feel you are the team to beat in the East?
THE PULSE (11:22 AM)
That's the kind of thing we're looking for. Nice work, Tony. The Glove may just field that very Q when we hit the air in 90 minutes!
THE PULSE (11:23 AM)
And if anyone has a take on the story that Manny Ramirez encouraged Johnny Damon to bolt Boston for New York, we'd love to hear it!
Dave Holmes (12:50 PM)
Dan, dont you remember Manny when he was an Indian? There's no explaining his actions sometimes...
THE PULSE (12:56 PM)
Hey, we're about five minutes from the show, everyone ready to settle in with your eggnog and talk sports with use for a few hours?
THE PULSE (12:57 PM)
We've got a full slate of NFL games today, and Qadry Ismail is going to start the show talking football. What do you folks think of today's games?
THE PULSE (12:57 PM)
Which teams are going to get a lump of coal in their playoff stockings? (get ready for three hours of holiday metaphors).
Frank (Shaw AFB, SC)
We here at the 28th OWS don't have any cable to watch football, but we are watching game 5 of the "93 NBA Finals on DVD. Good times.
THE PULSE (1:00 PM)
28th OWS? Fill us in on the lingo, Frank.
Steve Bunin (1:03 PM)
Hey Pulsites! Welcome to the show, good to have you and good to be back. Gary Payton coming up LIVE -- send me your emails. Let's talk some NFL - who's Seattle's biggest speed bump on the way to the Super Bowl?
Adam (Pittsburgh)
Mr. Glove when are you going to give basketball up? Isn't this just like when you went to LA? You don't need the ring your a great in the game.
Dean Houston (Astoria, NY)
Hey Gary, you're the GM of a certain NY basketball team, we'll call them the "Kicks", and your team is light years over the salary cap and there is little to no talent with which to make impact moves - what would you do if you were put in charge to fix that mess?
Sea, WA
Yo Glove,The Sonics need some saavy, so get a ring in Miami with the daddy and come back to Seatown for career wind-down. Question: How ya like playing with Shaq?
Austin Pase
If you got to play for any team in the NBA you got to pick who would you play for?
B.H HERNANDEZ PROVIDENCE RI
WHY DID NOT YOU WANT TO GO BACK TO L.A.?. DID YOU GET ALONE WITH K.B.
Frank (Shaw AFB, SC)
Operational Weather Squadron. We forcast for the southeast US and the Middle East
Blu, Tampa
Gary, with all the doubt about if you are able to still shutdown players defensively, do you feel that you are effective enough to provide that same defensive edge to shut players down in the big games that Miami will face as you all quest for that Championship?
Steve Bunin (1:04 PM)
Man, you all are hard-hitting. We'll get in some of those Q's to the glove ... what else you want to know?
Blu, Tampa
From everyone in the Tampa Bay area, we send our deepest condolences to the Dungy Family. They have meant so much to the Bay area. Our Prayers are with them.
Jake (Victorville,Ca)
Seattle's biggest challenge will having to run Alexander on the Bears defense
Michael R, Owings Mills, MD
Colts are going to lose becuase they are not in the correct mindset to play football; since, they are sad for Dungy's loss; since he is in Tampa. It is hard for the players to change mindsets from Dungy to interim coach to Dungy in 3 weeks and going into the playoffs. This might be the Colts' road-block to the Super Bowl this year.
THE PULSE (1:08 PM)
All right. Steve and Dave will be stopping in to chat throughout the show. Talk about multi-tasking ...
Nate (California, Palo Alto)
Hey guys,Johnny Damon was the missing part of the puzzle for the Yanks. He can hit, get on base, and most importantly, play DEFENSE!!
THE PULSE (1:09 PM)
That's what we're talking about next, Nate. Seems like this is the biggest news of the offseason so far. Is Damon that good?
THE PULSE (1:09 PM)
Or is it just NYC-Boston hype?
Erik (San Dimas, CA)
Another edition of The Pulse is finally here
Erik (San Dimas, CA)
It doesn't matter that the Yankees got Johnny Damon because HELLO they have no pitching
THE PULSE (1:11 PM)
They have bolstered the bullpen, but the rotation is the same, you're right.
JoshuaM (Portsmouth Ohio)
How far do you predict the Bengals go, if they get the first round bye in the playoffs?
Anthony (Chicago)
Come on man...this is the biggest move this year. Would have never happened if Theo was there.
Joshua (Cambridge, Oh)
I think it's NYC-Boston hype. He was the best available free agent. He's a camera hog, and a NY babyface soon. Torii Hunter would be way better for them, but they want someone who can sparkle in the light
THE PULSE (1:12 PM)
Wow, that sounds almost harsh enough to be from Cambridge, Mass, Joshua!
Jake (Victorville,Ca)
Hey Yankee fans, it looks like you got another true yankee will your salary like Damon..Sheff..A-rod..R.J..Farnsworth..anyone heard of a farmclub?
Steve Bunin (1:12 PM)
Joshua -- tough to say. Young teams sometimes struggle in the playoffs. Let's say they play the Steelers. Yes, they got 'em in the reg.season, but it's a different mindset in the playoffs. They haven't been there before, and I wouldn't be surprised if they bow out in the 1st round, even WITH all the weapons they have.
Steve Bunin (1:13 PM)
Henry - GREAT Question - I'll ask GP.
Jesse Madden
When you were in Seattle; I saw you in Tower Records a couple of times, buyingcds', do you still go out to buy your cds'?
Steve Bunin (1:14 PM)
jesse - was that the Tower records near the Space Needle? Seattle rocks. I'm biased, but anyone who's been there agrees.
THE PULSE (1:16 PM)
Hey, we're talking college football's biggest plays next. What plays do you all remember?
THE PULSE (1:18 PM)
I know we've got some college football diehards out there ...
Vinod (Blackfoot,Id)
I will always remember Leinart to Jarrett 4th and 9 at Notre Dame.
THE PULSE (1:19 PM)
That was a big one, for sure, Vinod. What else you folks have?
Joshua (Cambridge, Oh)
How about Tyrone Prothro's catching the football on someone's helmet. I'm a diehard buckeye fan, but come on, thats rediculous
Dennis S., Boise
How about Boise State's Jared Zabransky and his 6 turnovers in one half against Georgia. Those were huge!
THE PULSE (1:22 PM)
Sounds like a painful memory, Dennis.
Ricky ((Villanova))
Devin Hester's punt return that got called back
THE PULSE (1:22 PM)
Oh yeah, the best play that didn't count since Rocket Ismail in the Orange Bowl!
Steve Bunin (1:23 PM)
that's in there joshua - good call
Marc (Pitt)
Yeah, that Prothro catch against southern miss has to be one of the best plays in college football history
Dave Holmes (1:23 PM)
I've tried to relive Devin Hester on my Xbox unsuccessfully. That was the play of the year that never "officially" happened.
Erik (San Dimas, CA)
This should be a very exciting bowl season
THE PULSE (1:24 PM)
If we get more plays like these, you're right.
Joshua (Cambridge, Oh)
another painful memory? Ryan Hambys.. TRIPLE catch of the football in the endzone against texas, eventually getting it dislodged. He had 3 tries to put away texas, and missed it.
THE PULSE (1:26 PM)
The Pulse as therapy. Hey, we're there for you.
Vinod (Blackfoot, ID)
I am definitely looking forward to JoePa and Bobby Bowden in the Orange Bowl.
Ricky ((Villanova))
How about the catch by the OK State guy?
Craig (Philadelphia,PA)
First of all i think USC is overrated ans i am putting money on the Temple Owls next year making it to their first national championship bowl game. I DEFINATELY!!! think Temple is wayyyyyy more talented than USC,GO TEMPLE OWLS!!! WHOO! WHOO!
THE PULSE (1:27 PM)
Easy Craig, all eggnog drinks should contain more eggnog than alcohol. It's still early in the day.
Joshua (Cambridge, Oh)
If Vince Young stays in.. Ohio State vs Texas in Austin, could be 1 and 2 playing in the second game of the season.
Jake (Victorville,Ca)
I cant wait for the Kraft bowl or whatever made up names they have now
THE PULSE (1:30 PM)
Joshua, getting on air. Nice work.
Frank (Shaw AFB, SC)
Its never too early for cocktails
THE PULSE (1:32 PM)
Fair enough. Hey, we're going to take you through the early NFL games next. We'll also be talking college hoops pretty soon with Andy Katz.
THE PULSE (1:32 PM)
Any college hoops fans out there this afternoon?
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
Nope
THE PULSE (1:33 PM)
Not an Alando Tucker fan, Mike?
Jake (Victorville,Ca)
North Carolina-Great young team that will get experiance playing Duke.
Joshua (Cambridge, Oh)
Just because i'm an ohio state homer. How about the OSU hiring of Thad Matta? How good did that turn out?
THE PULSE (1:35 PM)
Homers are totally allowed here, Joshua. Encouraged, even.
Jeremy (Lowell,IN)
Go I-L-L-I-N-I
Ricky ((Villanova))
Uconn vs Nova' Big games this year
Dennis (Boise,ID)
Can anyone name a current Tar Heels player?
Marc (Pitt)
Yeah, Lets Go Pitt Undefeated 9-0
Matt (Alden,NY)
Alando Tucker is overrated
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
I'm more of a Taco Wallace guy (WR, Packers)
Vinod (Blackfoot, ID)
Was Texas just extemely overrated or were Duke and Tennessee just that good?
THE PULSE (1:38 PM)
Tennessee didn't look that good against Oklahoma State this week.
Frank (Shaw AFB, SC)
Hopefully Pitt will remain undefeated when they come into Columbia next week. (I'll be there)
THE PULSE (1:38 PM)
Obviously, we're not talking the Ivy League Columbia ...
Matt (Alden,NY)
All this talk about college basketball where is jj rennick
THE PULSE (1:39 PM)
Slow down, Matt. He's one of the poll choices. Go vote!
Kent (MS)
Louisville will be a high seeded team to lose in the first or second round this year in the NCAA tournament
THE PULSE (1:40 PM)
No love for Taquan Dean from Kent.
Craig (Philly)
jj reddick will be player of the year
kurt (lincoln, tx)
sorry matt, it is Reddick
Jeremy (Lowell,IN)
Who's on next?
THE PULSE (1:41 PM)
Andy Katz is settling into his chair to field your questions.
Jake (Victorville,Ca)
I agree Louisville=NO DEFENSE!!
Dennis (Boise,ID)
Are we going to talk about women's hoops - that is more my fortay.
THE PULSE (1:42 PM)
Don't even front, Dennis. The Pulse will talk women's hoops all day. Idaho's Emily Faurholt? Nation's most underrated player!
THE PULSE (1:43 PM)
Meanwhile, Andy Katz is running down the biggest stories of the nonconference season ...
Craig (Philly)
Andy, whats up brotha? Are the Zags a strong final four contender this year and will temple ever be the same?
THE PULSE (1:43 PM)
Morrison's big game in Maui was Andy's No. 2 moment, Craig.
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
Hey Andy,Whos the best player in College? Personally, I think Adam Morrison, but others may say J.J. Reddick. Who's your pick?
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
How's the Duke game winner from half-court only #4?
Kent (MS)
Morrison's shot was pure luck.
kurt (lincoln, tx)
Andy, what is up with Morrison's mustache?
THE PULSE (1:45 PM)
That's the answer we all want to know. But even Andy may not know the answer to that one.
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
What does Wisconsin have to do for some love?
Matt (Alden,NY)
Emily Faurolt is not underrated she just has a quailty team around her
Joshua (Cambridge, Oh)
Does Greg Oden look to be the big signing of the year, college wise, and if so where would it put Ohio State in years to come?
THE PULSE (1:45 PM)
Come on, Matt. She's carrying Leilani Mitchell!
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Long live the alma mater of Lionel Simmons!! (and former Saint Joseph's coach Jim Boyle)...
Dennis (Boise,ID)
Guys - who are your Top 5 players in NCAA hoops this year?
THE PULSE (1:46 PM)
Yep, Andy thinks LaSalle is looking solid as a sleeper.
Ricky (Villanova)
Andy is Randy Foye a player of the year cannidate
Steve Bunin (1:46 PM)
Dennis - do I get a say? Gotta start w/Morrison, then Redick. I like Eric Williams at W.Forest, Jordan Farmar is playing his butt off for UCLA ...
Steve Bunin (1:47 PM)
Now we need a small forward.
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
1. Morrison2. Reddick
Erik (San Dimas, CA)
Adam Morrison need to shave that ridiculous mustache of his
THE PULSE (1:47 PM)
In his chat earlier this week, he gave Foye some consideration, but it's tough with Allan Ray on the same squad.
Steve Bunin (1:47 PM)
Erik - no doubt. That's an 8th-grade classic. Gotta shave if it don't come in better than that. Who's our small forward?
THE PULSE (1:48 PM)
What do you all think? Adam Morrison or J.J. Redick?
Jeremy (Lowell,IN)
When will Mr. Vasher be on?
Vinod (Blackfoot, ID)
The biggest surprise this college basketball year was JJ Redick missing 2 free throws in a row!
Matt (Alden,NY)
i think that jj reddick is the best elite playerin college hoops since carmelo anthony
Vinod (Blackfoot, ID)
Morrison reminds me a lot of Dirk.
Steve Bunin (1:48 PM)
Jeremy - he'll join us around 2:40pm ET/11:40am PT.
Craig ( Philly)
Adam Scorches teams, you think his coach cares abotu a stache?
kurt (lincoln, tx)
You are right about Allan Ray, that kid can ball.
Jake (Victorville,Ca)
Top 5 in NCAA1.Morrison2.Reddick3.Gay4.Gibson5.Dean
Sonny (South Bend)
Marco Kilingsworth is POY!
Steve Bunin (1:49 PM)
Ray is a good call. Kilingsworth is a great PF, but unless you slide Morrison to small forward, he doesn't make my roster yet... Keep the ideas coming.
Dieter (Gig Harbor, WA)
Adam Morrison is the best player in college hoops, he can just throw the ball towards the hoop and it goes in during close games.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Morrison reminds me a lot of a kid going through puberty...
Ricky (Villanova)
Reports say Ray and Foye, in practice got so intense they can't guard each other anymore
Kent (MS)
Nick Caner-Medley maybe?
kurt (lincoln, tx)
Andy, would you still consider Daniel Gibson one of your top point guards after how he has performed so far this year.
Craig ( Philly)
Adam Scorches teams, you think his coach cares about a stache?
Sonny (South Bend)
Morrison reminds me of the kid who hangs out at 7-11 and asks me to buy him some Boone's Farm ...
JOHN MEETERS (LAS VEGAS)
JJ REDICK IS THE NCAA PLAYER OF THE YEAR. HE WILL NOT GO #1. MORRISON WILL.
kurt (lincoln, tx)
I know Lamarcus Aldridge doesn't compare to some of the other players, but are you impressed with him so far.
THE PULSE (1:51 PM)
He's talking about LaMarcus right now!
matthew (boston)
morrison is the best player in collage basketball period
Craig (Philly)
JJ reddick is number one by senority, because stat wsie this season morrison is right up there!
Erik (San Dimas, CA)
Watch out college basketball here comes Mike Davis and the Indiana Hoosiers
THE PULSE (1:53 PM)
All right, good college hoops chatter. Next we're going to check out some of Chris Berman's plays of the year ...
THE PULSE (1:53 PM)
So which plays do you remember? Any sport, doesn't matter. What stands out to you from 2005?
kurt (lincoln, tx)
Nathan Vasher's return
THE PULSE (1:54 PM)
That's a good one, Kurt.
Marc (Pitt)
Brandon lloyds one hand grab against the Giants
Erik (San Dimas, CA)
Sean Dockey's prayed being answered on that half court shot
Matt (Alden,NY)
I think that the lienart 4th and 9 is overrated because a good quarterback should be able to make those plays
THE PULSE (1:57 PM)
Good, or great? To call the audible?
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Eagles block Chargers field goal and return it for a TD to win at the Linc?
Craig (Philly)
Lance Armstrong 7th Tour de france, it doesnt get bigger than that!
Sonny (South Bend)
Leinert's pass on 4th down and TD run to send Charlie Weis back to the Old Country Buffet to drown his sorrows in roast beast and gravy ...
Kent (MS)
Nenad Kristic's full court heave at the buzzer
Frank (Shaw AFB, SC)
Patrick Sparks 3 against MSU
THE PULSE (1:58 PM)
Great one, every part of the rim?
Erik (San Dimas, CA)
How bout the Heisman Trophy Winner Reggie Bush helping the former Heisman winner Matt Leinart into the endzone for the game winning touchdown against Notre Dame
Alex (Portland)
Top fve moments of 2005: Roger Federer takes 3rd striaght Wimbledon, Pats win 3rd SB in 4 years, Leinart rushes it in against ND, Shaun Alexander goes for 4TDS in a game for the seond time in one season, LaDanian's OT touchdown run
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
Matt, you are so wrong. A GREAT quarterback makes those plays. not a GOOD one. Those are the plays that define a player
Dieter (Gig Harbor, WA)
I would have to say Jay Felley missing 3 field goals in the 4th quarter and OT and allowing the Seahawks to win on a game winning field goal by Josh Brown.
Nathan (Delano, MN)
the high school shots should of been higher
Dave Holmes (2:00 PM)
Alex, Shaun Alexander on that list!? I'm guessing you're from Portland Oregon, not Maine...
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
The full court quarterback pass at the buzzer in the high school game
Erik (San Dimas, CA)
I completely forgot about Afleet Alex
THE PULSE (2:01 PM)
Nice work, Boomer will be back later with the top five of the year.
Kyle (Cumberland, RI)
Are we talking baseball anytime soon?
Matt (Alden,NY)
i think that rameriez wanted damon to leave because he wanted all the fame in boston
THE PULSE (2:03 PM)
Yep, we'll be touching on the Damon signing again in a few ...
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Is Manny just being Manny when he tells teammates to leave Boston?
Kent (MS)
oh yeah the curse of the caveman.....
Jake (Victorville,Ca)
Leave it to someone in NY to say that
Dave (Boston)
For the remainder of this season, please refer to the Boston Red Sox as the Boston Marlins
THE PULSE (2:05 PM)
Wow, now that's harsh.
Vinod (Blackfoot, ID)
Is Manny gonna drive out Schill and Ortiz also?
Erik (San Dimas, CA)
I don't know if Manny should be taken seriously
THE PULSE (2:05 PM)
Unless he's at the plate with runners on ...
Craig ( Philly)
Will do, Bostonn Marlins never stood a chance t his season, but without Damon it wil beharder for the Boston Marlins
Kyle (Cumberland, RI)
Cocoa Crisp is coming to Boston, thats why Cleveland is trading for Langerhans
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
I've heard a few Red Sox fans say probably the most vile things about Johnny Damon that I've ever heard about any professional baseball player (including Derek Jeter)...
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
Manny was just being Manny. Bill Simmons had a great outlook on this whole situation. He said if you had a good friend at a law firm, and another law firm came along and asked him to come to their firm for 14 million more dollars, you would have told your friend to go, wouldn't you?
Eric (Maryland)
The Yankees didn't need Damon. they need a pitcher.
Jake (Victorville,Ca)
These people saying this are obvisily not REDSOX fans because they would be blaming Damon like I am
Steve Bunin (2:08 PM)
Pulsites -- great news, Nathan Vasher, Pro Bowl CB from the Bears, is joining us a little early - he's coming up next. Send in your Bears emails and/or questions for the former Longhorn.
Eric (Maryland)
Lately, everything Steinbrenner touches has turned into fools gold.
eric (oklahoma)
vince young will rule the rose bowl and the nfl.
Dave Holmes (2:09 PM)
Yanks ranked 22nd in the league in ERA behind the TIGERS!! Work on that curveball Johnny D.
Craig ( Philly)
And when will Deion RETIRE!!! and just become a espn anylst, hes horrible now
Kent (MS)
the bears nedd to trade up in the draft and get vince young
THE PULSE (2:11 PM)
We're talking Bears next, Kent. Nathan Vasher will be talking to Steve.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
When Vasher walks to the studio will he be getting a few illegal blocks in the back along the way?
THE PULSE (2:11 PM)
Ha, nice one, Wingo.
kurt (lincoln, tx)
Nate, Congratulations on the pro bowl selection.
Vinod (Blackfoot, ID)
The Bears should break up some of the defense and get Leinart or Bush. That offense isn't Superbowl material by a long shot.
THE PULSE (2:12 PM)
Now that's a bold suggestion.
Frank (Shaw AFB, SC)
If you all think VInce YOung is coming out this year, AND be ready for the NFL, you are going to be dissipointed.
Jake (Victorville,Ca)
Offense doesnt win
THE PULSE (2:13 PM)
Which would you rather have: Chicago's defense or Cincinnati's offense?
Kyle (Cumberland, RI)
Hey Nathan, What did it feel like when you were returning that field goal 108 yards and what was going through your head?
THE PULSE (2:13 PM)
He's talking about that return right now.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Defense wins Championships, plain and simple...
Vinod (Blackfoot, ID)
The D. No Question.
Jake (Victorville,Ca)
CHI-TOWN'S DEFENSE
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
Hey Nathan,I gotta admit, I'm a Packer Backer. But this year, you guys have convinced me to come over to the dark side. I'm rooting for da bears sunday. What do you think is the biggest difference between this year and last year that turned you from a bottom of the barrel team last year to a contender for the Super Bowl this year?
Jorge (Chicago,IL)
Nathan, Do you consider the Bears Super Bowl contenders?
Jorge (Chicago,IL)
Chicago defense
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
If you score points you may win. If your opponent doesn't score points, you will win.
Frank (Shaw AFB, SC)
Cincy's O. Defencees can be schemed for regardless of personell (see: Patriots)
Joshua (Portsmouth,Oh)
Cincinnati's Offense, by FAR. The 2 Johnsons, Tj, Carson could be an amazing player for years.
Sonny (South Bend)
Leinart will be a major bust. Mark my word. When I say major bust I mean Kyle Orton type numbers. Man that kid is awful.
THE PULSE (2:14 PM)
I was starting to think Cincy's offense wouldn't get any votes.
Josh (Philly)
Chicago's defense-because if u put even a bad offense on the field, u still have a chance to win
kurt (lincoln, tx)
The Bears do not need any more good running backs.
Vinod (Blackfoot, ID)
Cincy couldn't put up 17 on the Da Bears.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Five words about offense being more important: Trent Dilfer, Super Bowl Champion
Frank (Shaw AFB, SC)
One word for you Wingo: parity. The Chargers have to be a top 10 team on O and D, and they ain't going anywhere this year.
Erik (San Dimas, CA)
That's hard because I would like to have both but I would have to say the Cincy offense because I am the biggest Chad Johnson fan
Josh: (Bettendorf, IA):
Everyone I know has been saying that Rex Grossman is going to be a savior for the Bears offense. I don't know about that, but I know he'll easily be able to out-perform what Kyle Orton has done. Do you think playing Grossman will make the Bears good enough to make it to the Super Bowl?
THE PULSE (2:18 PM)
Nice work, Josh. You were on air.
Darnell (Evanston, IL)
Imagine how good the Bears would be if they hadn't wasted a first-round pick on Cedric Benson when they had Thomas Jones? This defense with Shawne Merriman? Ouch.
THE PULSE (2:18 PM)
So were you, Darnell.
Sonny (South Bend)
You must like those Fathead commericals ESPNEWS runs back-to-back-to-back-to-back Erik
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Frank, would you say the Colts "O" was AWESOME last year? Probably one of the best ever? So, Peyton Manning got a ring with that great "O", right? That's right, he didn't...
THE PULSE (2:20 PM)
Frank and Wingo have their own side debate going here ...
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
They wouldn't have taken Merriman. They would've taken KC's LB Johnson. Hindsight is great isn't it?
Sonny (South Bend)
The two worst QBs I've EVER seen (not counting Joey Harrington) have been Jonathan Quinn and Kyle Orton. Just think if the Bears even had an average QB
Eric (Grosse Pointe, MI)
What about the NBA games tomorrow?
THE PULSE (2:21 PM)
Don't worry, we'll be getting the preview of tomorrow's big games in a bit. And we're still planning on Gary Payton stopping by to take your questions before 4 ET.
THE PULSE (2:21 PM)
But right after the NFL updates, we're going back to Chris Berman's top plays of the year.
THE PULSE (2:22 PM)
So if you've had time to think about the plays you remember from 2005, now's the time to get them on air!
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Ah, one of my fav ESPN commercials..."I didn't take your chair..." Not as good as the "Bristol Exchange Program", but close...
THE PULSE (2:22 PM)
Does that count as your top play for 2005, Wingo?
Kent (MS)
i like the Danica PaTRICK one
THE PULSE (2:23 PM)
Taking the lead at the Indy 500?
kurt (lincoln, tx)
Limas Sweed's catch in the endzone...without it the Horns would not be in the Rose Bowl.
Eric (Grosse Pointe, MI)
I think one of the top plays for 2005 happened last night, at the Wings vs. Blackhawks game. Two goals in the final 30 seconds and a buzzer beater to win it in OT?? Amazing.
Craig (Philly)
Lance Armstrong's 7 win in the tour de france, simply amazing:)
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
TWO ILLEGAL PLAYS IN THE TOP FIVE!?! A "push" to win in South Bend, and the Vasher return (who says crime doesn't pay?)
Frank (Shaw AFB, SC)
I can't exactly back myself up here. I got work AND I'm trying to look up numbers at the same time.
THE PULSE (2:28 PM)
Wow, anyone watching the Giants game while Pulse-ing?
THE PULSE (2:28 PM)
We may have to add a play to the list for plays of the year ...
THE PULSE (2:29 PM)
And Chad Johnson just scored, and has a sack of toys stashed in the corner of the endzone!
THE PULSE (2:29 PM)
Wow, Chad is going to get fined for this one, but it's brilliant!
Marc (Pitt)
Hey Chad Johnson scored anybody know what he did for the TD celebration
THE PULSE (2:30 PM)
Handed out toys to kids in the stands. No kidding.
Joshua (Portsmouth,Oh)
See, THAT is why chad johnson is one of my favorite football players.
Sonny (South Bend)
Are they going to show it on the NY Giants game?
Frank (Shaw AFB, SC)
Now how is the league gonna look when they fine him? NOt good.
Donovon (Boca Raton)
Chad Johnson would be great doing stand up with Jamie Fox
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
I like the proposal Chad did to the cheerleader...I think some residents of the "red states" actually kicked in their t.v.'s when they saw that one...
george (blacksburg)
thats my play fo the year!
kurt (lincoln, tx)
He took it to another level with that celebration. Man!
Vinod (Blackfoot, ID)
CJ is just so creative...he's impossible to dislike.
Eric (Grosse Pointe, MI)
I dont understand why the League fines and frowns on players celebrating. I understand it can get out of hands sometimes (50 yd line celebration in Dallas) but I think that they sell the game, they add flair to it. Sort of like how a lot of people watch NASCAR for the crashes.
Erik (San Dimas, CA)
I knew Chad didn't have a live deerin his garage
Kent (MS)
or hide a mike somewhere and sing jingle bells....
Vinod (Blackfoot, ID)
Is Chad Johnson hurt?
THE PULSE (2:34 PM)
He left the field, but there are only 10 second left in the half, so it might be minor (or even something like the men's room).
Joshua (Portsmouth,Oh)
Cj is worth the price of admission. He is an entertainer, and realizes people pay MONEY to see him
Erik (San Dimas, CA)
Chad just went to the locker room for an apparent "injury". That could mean he's getting the deer, but we'll see.
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
ok somebody explain to me exactly what happened with the end-zone celebration and Chad. He handed out toys? Where did he get them?
THE PULSE (2:38 PM)
He had a red Santa-like bag stashed in the corner of the endzone and grabbed it after scoring.
Ronny (NY)
Thank God, football needs a guy like Chad Johnson.
Kent (MS)
let him have his Christmas fun......
Vinod (Blackfoot, ID)
Was the bag hidden under anything?
Matt (Alden,NY)
who think sthat he will come out at half time with a deer?
Santa Claus (North Pole)
HO! HO! HO! MERRY CHRISTMAS HOW'S EVERYONE TODAY? CHAD WANTED A NEW CELEBRATION AND THATS WHAT I GOT HIM. ANYONE ELSE WHAT SOMETHING?
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
I'd like to encourage Manny Ramirez to please shut up for once...
Dieter (Gig Harbor, WA)
Is Edgerrin James playing against the Seahawks today?
Steve Bunin (2:41 PM)
Yup - Edge is in, Dieter --- thanks for the email. Keep 'em coming! Happy Holidays, Pulsites.
Erik (San Dimas, CA)
Chad Johnson is somewhat a carbon copy of Terrell Owens but doesn't draw attention to himself off the field and doesn't rip his teammates
THE PULSE (2:42 PM)
So more of a mirror image?
Matt (Alden,NY)
it would not look good if the nfl fines him because what wrong did he do he probally made a lot of kids day doing that
Donovon (Boca Raton)
Ya but CJ has ethics and knows how to shut his mouth
Sonny (South Bend)
Can we just call Chad Johnson 'Fathead' ... my wife doesn't understand that commercial. She thinks it's a parody because of the name and the fact CJ comes out with those gold teeth and calls himself a Fathead. I tell her it's a real product but she thinks it is just an ESPN joke commerical
Matt (Alden,NY)
i say lets the players do celebrations if it doesnt harm anyone because everyone loves the crazy celebrations
THE PULSE (2:45 PM)
All right, other than Chad Johnson, what do you guys remember as the biggest stories of 2005?
THE PULSE (2:45 PM)
A slight variation on our prior best plays conversation ...
Dieter (Gig Harbor, WA)
T.O.
THE PULSE (2:46 PM)
Yeah, that seemed to dominate much of the year. Too much.
Frank (Shaw AFB, SC)
Biggest stories of the year? Steriods, TO, Yanks-Sox, Roids, TO, TO, roids. did I get them all?
Nathan (Delano, MN)
Palmerio on steriods!!!
Drew (Long Island)
The new beginning of hockey
THE PULSE (2:47 PM)
Good one, easy to overlook.
Joshua (Portsmouth,Oh)
The irony of the Eagles losing Donovan McNabb, and T.O., and the fact those two tore that team apart, and neither now play for them.
Dieter (Gig Harbor, WA)
The T.O. story was pretty big and also the most annoying.
Vinod (Blackfoot, ID)
USC.... the best team currently in sports.
Vinod (Blackfoot, ID)
OZZIE OZZIE OZZIE!
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Drew's "anti-media" rant in Moorestown was HILARIOUS (guess they don't teach P.R. classes at U of M)...
Donovon (Boca Raton)
Hands down biggest story of the year has to be my wife actually letting me out of the house to watch a Heat game!
Dave Holmes (2:49 PM)
T.O and Steroids the top 2 stories? What a year...
Steve Bunin (2:49 PM)
alright Pulsites - future Hall of Famer Gary Payton is coming onboard next. LIVE!! Got any more q's for the Glove?
THE PULSE (2:50 PM)
Hey, Gary Payton is live next from Miami!
Eric (Grosse Pointe, MI)
I'm just ready to talk some NBA
Sonny (South Bend)
Sorry boys I have to get ready for church. My wife won't give me any presents unless I go ... plus I want to start drinking soon. Merry Christmas gusy. Had a great time here today. ...
Drew (Long Island)
Did the Randy Johnson trade occur in '05, if so, that can't be forgotten (even though I am a diehard, nonfrontrunning, Red Sox fan)
THE PULSE (2:51 PM)
Fair enough, Sonny, Have a safe holiday.
Nathan (Delano, MN)
Who cares about hockey!
Matt (Alden,NY)
roids!!! roids were the biggest talk
JJ (Austin)
Next question
Frank (Shaw AFB, SC)
Hey GP, is a book in the works so we can FINALLY find out some of the classic jaw-jackin that was said during your time in the league?
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Gary Payton, how does it feel playing against guys who weren't born when you were a rookie?
THE PULSE (2:51 PM)
That would be a must-read.
Drew (Long Island)
What were his feelings about Boston in his one year stay- was it fun for him to be in such a sport-loving environment, or was it frustrating as many players have suggested as they cannot even go out to eat without being mobbed by fans
Jaycee (Atlanta..)
GP, lemme get a pair of those Jordans from you. I'm a sneaker FANATIC!!!
Dave Holmes (2:54 PM)
Jaycee, if you accept free shoes from Gary Payton, you'll become academically ineligible from all amateur sports. Are you ready for such a punishment?
Calvin (Northampton, MA)
You've represented the U.S. in international play, so what do you think is the one thing fans don't understand about why our teams have struggled recently?
THE PULSE (2:56 PM)
Good Q, Calvin. GP is answering now.
THE PULSE (2:57 PM)
Dang, sorry we couldn't get a couple more emails from Payton. A rough Pat Riley practice ran a little long today.
Dieter (Gig Harbor, WA)
What happened with the interview?
THE PULSE (2:58 PM)
We had hoped to get G.P. in earlier, but Miami's practice ran long and we lost our feed.
THE PULSE (2:59 PM)
As Nascar drivers would say, just one of them racin' deals.
Erik (San Dimas, CA)
Maybe Gary was late for practice and Pat knew he was on the PULSE
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
no big...whose next?
THE PULSE (2:59 PM)
We've got your thoughts on Chad Johnson and then Qadry Ismail talking NFL.
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
Chad Johnson is the anti-TO. Sure, they both are great WRs that celebrate in big ways. But Chad is very likeable, and he makes you laugh, while TO is almost nasty sometimes and makes you not like him.
kurt (lincoln, tx)
C'mon...can the pulse bring up Ricky's name. He's having a pretty good game today...show him some love. Quadry, what is your take on the Ricky situation?
THE PULSE (3:04 PM)
We'll try, Kurt.
Sonny (South Bend)
Ricky who?
Zac Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA)
Ricky Williams? He can't play for anything.
Dave Holmes (3:07 PM)
Chad Johnson is beloved because he doesn't call out his own teammates like Terrell Owens. There's a big difference between arrogance and entertainment.
Frank (Shaw AFB, SC)
Is it me, or is this the first time in history where is top two seeds in a conference aren't even the odds on favorite to go to the Super Bowl?
THE PULSE (3:09 PM)
All right, one last run through the Johnny Damon story.
THE PULSE (3:09 PM)
What do you all think of Manny telling Damon to go to the Yankees?
Ron (Long Island NY)
I can't believe this!!! Manny is thinking about himself more than the Boston Red Sox. He just needs to stay out of that. I am a Met fan and I do not want him to go to the Mets at all!!!
Spencer: Easton,Mass
Johnny Damon is going to have the hardest time in center field for the Yankees sure he has some speed but he can't throw to save his life he's going to need 3 cut off men just to get to second base!
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
I love Torre and Cashman staring at Damon putting on the Yankees jersey; I'll bet five bucks they were both thinking "just put the jersey on buddy and don't say or do anything stupid, please"...
Joshua (Portsmouth,Oh)
To me it smells like manny wants more money..
Zac Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA)
It is "Manny being Manny".
Donovon (Boca Raton)
Ya I got something to say. Any player who signs with Yanks always talks about tradition. I say thats admition to the toon of multi million dollar deals. Nobody cares about tradition in NY they shoulda won the last 4 world series with there payroll
Zac Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA)
I didn't like that Damon lost his mustache.
Sonny (South Bend)
Johnny Damon will be what Edgar Renteria was for the Sox last year. A major disappointment
THE PULSE (3:14 PM)
That's an interesting comparison. Could be true.
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
It would be bad if Manny didn't tell Damon to go to the Yanks. They offered him 14 million more. If I was his teammate I wouldve said the same thing to him
THE PULSE (3:15 PM)
Great comment, where were you two minutes ago, Mike! That would have been good to get on air. Good stuff.
THE PULSE (3:17 PM)
All right, we're talking USC-Texas right after this USC vs. History segment. Rose Bowl thoughts?
Vinod (Blackfoot,ID)
Vince Young gives a valiant effort but they fall about 7-10 points short.
Zac Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA)
USC all the way Baby! It will be a high scorer maybe 34-31.
Donovon (Boca Raton)
This will be a Rose bowl for the ages. I see 3 potential NFL HOFers on the field. I cant wait to watch this one!
Josh (Philadelphia,Pennsylvania)
I think Reggie Bush and USC's offense will be too much to handle for Texas and for Vince Young to keep up with
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
In a 96-part series sponsored by ESPN, we compare the 1925 Chicago Cardinals vs. the 2005 Arizona Cardinals...
THE PULSE (3:20 PM)
All right, it's Christmas Eve so we'll let you get away with that bit of sass.
Frank (Shaw AFB, SC)
USC 35, Texas 17. And Vince says he's coming back for his senior year.
Ron (Long Island NY)
I think they should put the 2005 Texas team on the USC vs History Segment. I say that because Kirk and Mark have USC blowing out some of these teams and people have Texas beating USC in the Rose Bowl.
Sonny (South Bend)
Texas will win this game. Mark my words. USC's secondary is a complete joke. Nobody talks about this. Also, USC is NOT going for a three-peat. Do we only count BCS champs when it's convient for us? Did LSU not win it two years ago? Did I miss something? I think Sporting News gave Auburn the national title two years ago. So do we count this?
Joshua (Portsmouth,Oh)
Vince Young will Lead Texas to the win, Tying the recent miami record, and VY will go pro
John (Texas)
Who can contain Vince Young on that SC defense Texas has an answer for reggie, micheal huff aaron hariss and rod wright
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
Texas is going to be BLOWN-OUT by USC. Texas barely beat an Ohio State team waaaay back in the second week of the season, and that was their only challenge of the season. USC has played some huge games under intense scrutiny all year. Plus, USC has come from behind manyh times, territory Texas is not familiar with. In addition to all of that, Texas has one great offensive player with Vince Young. USC has Jarrett, Bush, White, and Lienart captaining the unit. No question, USC...by a LOT
Donovon (Boca Raton)
USC35 Texas 29 nail biter to the end and Vince Young gets picked off for a touch down in OT. He does decide to leave for the NFL because he carried the Texas team
Austin(Temple City,CA)
I think that Pete Carrol has USC prepared. He is going to have a gameplan to shut down Vince Young with four months to work with. USC's offense is too much for Texas. Their defense is good, but USC arguably has the best offense to ever play college football.
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
What about an answer for White? And Lienart? and Jarrett? And Smith? Texas has NO-CHANCE
Josh Almond (Stafford,Va)
We all know that USC is the greatest college football team of all time. With Reggie Bush in the back field its impossible to beat them.
THE PULSE (3:24 PM)
All right, we're coming down to the final 30 minutes of this edition of The Pulse. Anyone have thoughts on the NFL games going on?
THE PULSE (3:25 PM)
Dallas up on Carolina, Bengals and Bills trading touchdowns. Steelers and Browns ... well, the Browns showed up at least.
Zac Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA)
The Steelers will beat the Cleveland Browns and win next week against the lousy Lions.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Steve Smith got tossed? Yeah, that'll do tons to help Carolina win against Dallas...
Josh (Philadelphia,Pennsylvania)
Oo man show some more love for my boy Julius Jones
Zac Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA)
The Bengals have Carson Palmer and will win the game against the Bills.
Paul (Boston)
What did Chad Johnson do for his TD celebration?
Sonny (South Bend)
The Lions look horrid as usual. Thanks NFL Sunday Ticket.
Steve Bunin (3:28 PM)
Paul - he had stowed a red bag of goodies near the end zone, went into and played Santa, throwing gifts into the stands.
Ron (Long Island NY)
Steve Smith tossed????? He seems like a chill guy.
john (austin tx)
matt lienart is overrated he isn't even the best quarterback in his conference, its drew olson, drew don't have dwyne jarret reggie bush and lendale white to work with.
Frank (Shaw AFB, SC)
Question, if USC wins, and you are Reggie Bush, why not come back one more yearand try for a 4th title in a row? I would take immortality over money. I guess the only person who wouldn't want to hear that is Lendale White.
John (Lafayette,LA)
If Dallas can pull out with a win today...it will be huge...not only for playoff hopes..but for morale...with last week's humiliating loss...and them getting bashed...it would be great for the team...also could sway Parcells to think less of retirement...seeing as that his team has great potential
THE PULSE (3:30 PM)
Vick is hurt for the Falcons right now ...
Steve Bunin (3:30 PM)
Frank - that's a good point. I haven't heard anyone make it yet and to be honest - it'd be a good call. Doubt theat he'll do it, but it's an interesting point.
THE PULSE (3:30 PM)
Now's he back up, walking off under his own power.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
YEAH TJ!!!
Ron (Long Island NY)
Hey, what happen to the deer??
Zac Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA)
The ultimate touchdown celebration is Chad Johnson passing out footballs when Terrell Owens tackles him.
Zac Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA)
The deer tested positive for steroids.
Austin(Temple City,CA)
This is a good game going on in KC.Both these teams are desperate to keep their season's alive.
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
wow what a great set of games we have this afternoon! Every game is close...well...almost every one
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
Austin, I hate to break it to ya, but San Diego isnt reallly playing that well...
Vinod (Blackfoot,ID)
I would rather have Chris Simms than Mike Vick.
THE PULSE (3:35 PM)
Another bold statement from Idaho. Atlanta still up by three right now ...
Zac Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA)
I'll tell you, this Chicago-Green Bay game could determine Brett Favre's future.
Mike (Austin, TX)
Where the heck has this Julius Jones been the last few months? All of a sudden he's the second coming of Tony Dorsett!
THE PULSE (3:38 PM)
You're on air Mike!
Alvin (Akron, OH)
Oregon lost its starting QB right? Can the Lions trade them Joey Harrington for the bowl game? We'll throw in Matt Millen for free.
THE PULSE (3:38 PM)
And you too, Alvin!
Vinod (Blackfoot,ID)
It isn't that bold Mike Vick can't pass the football...and last time I checked that's what QB's are supposed to do.
THE PULSE (3:38 PM)
I thought they were supposed to win?
Jacob (Texas)
You do not want chris simms trust me.......been a huge longhorn fan all my life. He chokes in big situations...2001 big 12 champ for example and all of the OU games
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
Hey Idaho, Simms doesn't have a single win in a game he plays without a hundred yard rusher
Sonny (South Bend)
Do you get NFL games in Idaho, Vinod? Are you blind? Or did you mean Phil Simms?
John (Gueydan,LA)
Why didn't the Saints put Todd Bouman in before now...I mean obviously being benched that long doesn't help...but now he is looking like another case of Jake Delhomme...he is going to heat up...then in the offseason...they are going to release him where he will start and bring a team to the playoffs
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
I'll take the QB that gets his team 2 or 3 TDs without fail every game (Vick) rather than the QB who is yet to win a game without a 100 yard rusher (Simms)
Frank (Shaw AFB, SC)
You can't spell overrated with out Vick. Well, maybe you can, but you know where I'm going with this.
Vinod (Blackfoot,ID)
I am not saying Chris Simms is amazing but he is a quality reliable passer that won't risk his team's season by running wildly all the time.
Joshua (Portsmouth,Oh)
I'd much rather have a pocket passer than a scrambler. Carson vs Vick... hmmm. There is NO competition.
Josh (Philadelphia,Pennsylvania)
Have you guys ever noticed how many very good quarterbacks were a backup to Brett Favre, the Packers better look into Aron Rodgers real soon before its too late
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus...the Giants are going to choke today and next week too...
THE PULSE (3:47 PM)
All right, we're winding down to the final 15 minutes. Anyone have some holiday sports messages to get out of their system?
Jacob (Texas)
The cowboys still wont make the playoffs even with Julius Jones running over carolina and the Giants screwing up
THE PULSE (3:48 PM)
Looks like both the Redskins and Cowboys may score big wins, although the Panthers are driving on Dallas.
Ben (Oregon)
Go Seahawks anyway!!!!!!!!!!
Josh (Philadelphia,Pennsylvania)
No way I totally disagree if they win today an easy game against the Rams at home should lock up there playoff spot for the Cowboys
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
Josh, thats not really fair. I could say McNabb vs. Harrington and would that prove scramblers are better? nope
Mike (Rice Lake, WI)
The backup to Brett Favre thing is not what many would expect. Its not that he's a great teacher, its that Ron Wolf was a fantastic QB scout. Since he left there have been no great backups to Favre.
Dave Holmes (3:49 PM)
Julius Jones loves December. Last year he tore up, looks like he's back against a very talented front 7 at Carolina.
Steve Bunin (3:49 PM)
Mike - you serious? Brunell, hasslebeck? Aaron Brooks?> Hello? Those guys aren't too shabby. Well, Brooks is shabby, but the others aren't.
Frank (Shaw AFB, SC)
Things I want for Christmas: A closer for the Braves, a Stanley Cup for the Bruins, O-Tackles for the Cowboys, and a non-crazy Artest for the Pacers.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Happy Holidays T.O.! I truly hope you can feed your family on the 1 year contract you will get next year from the Texans...
Michael (Allentown, PA)
Brett favre will be back next year if he gets one late christmas gift... REGGIE BUSH!
Zac Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA)
Chad Johnson is coming to a town near you.
Jacob (Texas)
Texas will win the rose bowl by 20 or more points...Vince is going to throw for 300 and run for 150 against a terrible USC defense
Frank (Shaw AFB, SC)
The only way the Saints will improve is by NOT resigning Jim Haslett. How this man has keept a job for this long is beyond me.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
I want LeBron's chair for Christmas (and a Giants choke job too...)!!!
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
All I want for Christmas is an answering machine that says: you have reached Wingo's house...NEXT QUESTION!
Steve Bunin (3:51 PM)
Alright, we're signing off PULSITES -- thanks so much for watching all year long. happy holidays to all, and to all, good nizzight.
Dave Holmes (3:52 PM)
Apparently Bunin is Sizanta Clizaus. Have a good one everyone. Enjoy the holidays!
THE PULSE (3:52 PM)
Thanks for joining us, and yes, we'll be right here again next Saturday to get you ready for New Year's Eve!
Frank (Shaw AFB, SC)
WAIT, is there going to be a Pulse next week?
THE PULSE (3:53 PM)
As if we'd let you ring in 2006 without us.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Merry Christmas to all those at Bristol! Now go home to your families!!
