Magnolia, Ohio
Do u think the way that Stuart Appleby is golfing he might have a shot in winning the mercedes championship again?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:02 PM)
Absolutely. Appleby entered the day with a two-stroke lead over Michael Campbell and he still holds that right now. Appleby made par on the first four holes, then eagled the par-5 5th hole to move to 8-under for the tournament. If he can keep it up, he'll be a threepeat champion.
Jeremy (Lowell,IN)
Jason, Who's in the running for it?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:03 PM)
It's a star-studded leaderboard. After Appleby and Campbell, Vijay Singh (-3 for the day) is two shots further back, followed by Jim Furyk, Vaughn Taylor, Lucas Glover and Sergio Garcia. The cream always seems to rise to the top when scores are closer to par and that is what's happening this week.
Cathy (Woodstock, On)
Do you see David Toms remaining in the elite of the top 5 this year or drop back in the money earnings and to the top 20's in ranking like in 2004?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:05 PM)
Cathy, can I pick somewhere in between? I really don't see Toms hanging with the Tour's elite on the money list (he was buoyed in '05 by that Match Play win), but he's too good to drop down into the 20s. How about somewhere around 8th on the money list? That sounds about right for him.
Jeremy from Woodbridge, VA
What do you think of Jason Gore's less than stellar performance this week? Is he a one hit wonder?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:09 PM)
Jason's really struggling this week, but he'll be back. He's the type of golfer who will always be all or nothing -- he can miss eight cuts in a row then win back-to-back. I don't think he'll ever be a consistent top-10 golfer every week. But he'll win again, that's for sure.
Andrew Katz
Glover will win a major this year.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:09 PM)
That's a pretty bold statement. Glover's got some game and he hits it a long way, but I don't think he's anywhere near ready to step up with the big boys in a major.
Matt (Laguna Niguel, CA)
Jason I spoke with you on Friday about the big players not showing up. You stated that they are private contractors and dont need to show up, BUT i wonder how long companies like mercedes will put up the HUGE purses for these tournaments if they are not guarrentted that Tiger and Phil will show up? I am not saying that Tiger and Phil will lose thier endorsements I think that the individual tournaments will lose thier endorsements.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:11 PM)
I don't think the PGA Tour is going to be hurting for sponsors anytime soon, if that's what you're worried about. Most sponsors are locked into lengthy contracts; those who aren't are free to back out, but there are plenty of others waiting in the wings to step in if they do -- whether Tiger and Phil play their event or not.
Jeremy (Lowell,IN)
Vijay is making a comeback. you agree?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:13 PM)
Jeremy, I hope you mean just in this event and not some sort of career comeback. He's playing very well right now and could have one of his patented back-door top-five finishes. It always seems like there are weeks when no one talks about Vijay, then he puts up a decent number on Saturday and an even better one on Sunday and all of a sudden, he's cashing another huge check. Great players know when to turn it on and that's what Singh does.
John (Ore)
Despite his struggles this week, what do you think of Sean O'Hair's game and what's different about him coming off his rookie year?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:15 PM)
O'Hair is a terrific young talent, as he proved last year. I think having a year of experience under his belt -- knowing how to pick and choose his schedule, knowing the courses, knowing more of his peers on Tour -- can only help. He'll continue improving this year and be a top-10 or top-20 golfer by the middle of '07.
MIKE KORENKO
After Jasons Gore 80 on Friday is there anyway he can still win the Mercedes Championship?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:17 PM)
Mike!!! Wake up and check out the scoreboard, dude. Gore shot 80-80-81 the first few days (as one humorous fan wrote yesterday in The Show, it looked like the Phoenix weather report). He would have had to shoot about a 45 to get himself back in the thick of things...instead, he's +4 through 16 holes.
Mike Meriden, CT
What ind of a season do you expect from David Duval?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:18 PM)
I don't expect much. An 82 here. A 68 there. He'll be inconsistent, making some cuts and missing some cuts. My best guess is that he'll be fighting to make the top-125 near season's end.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:19 PM)
Vijay Singh EN FUEGO, folks! The Big Fijian just birdied the 8th hole to move to -5. He's three back of Appleby and one behind Campbell.
Jeremy (lowell,IN)
Who's our first guest today?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:20 PM)
I've been assured that Brad Faxon will join us after his round. He's currently on the 16th hole and I know he needs to ice down his knee (he had offseason surgery) when he finishes, but he will be by later. I'll give plenty of advanced notice, so everyone can get their questions in for Brad.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:22 PM)
Uh-oh. Appleby coming back to the pack! He just bogeyed the 7th hole!
Barbra, PA
Please tell me Chris Dimarco will win atleast once on tour this year?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:24 PM)
Barbra, I'd be shocked if DiMarco didn't get at least one win. The guy's way too good -- and such a gritty competitor -- not to get another trophy. He hasn't won since '02 (although I give him partial credit for the Presidents Cup win), but the man is long overdue. As Jack Nicklaus said at RTJ, watch out for DiMarco, because when he finally gets another win, they may come in bunches.
Dave atlanta ga
What kind of season do you see Bart Bryant having? Is there any chance he can work his way onto the ryder cup team?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:31 PM)
Dave, I really thought he was a one-hit wonder when he won in Texas two years ago. Then I gave him some credit when he won at Memorial. But with the Tour Championship victory, he really established himself as a top player. He just had knee surgery, but I spoke with him the other day and he said he's feeling OK, even on this hilly course. I think he's got some good competition to make the team, but he's got a decent chance.
Kurt (Philadelphia, PA)
Jason - Jim Furyk is currently 4 down with 10 holes to play, do you think he has a chance?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:32 PM)
If he was four down and in second place, I'd say he's still in it. But being four down and with three great players ahead of him, it's going to be very tough. Not only does he need Appleby to falter, but he has to pass Campbell and Singh, too. But the good thing for Furyk is that he has a home right off the 18th green. So as soon as he finishes, he can just walk home, I assume.
Jason (Taiwan)
I seems just like basketball the world is catching up with the Americans in golf.. What are the chances of the PGA of America to have international tourn.in other countries? and because the Pga has to play in X number of tourn. why couldn't they say a player must play in 2 or 3 inter. PGA tourn.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:35 PM)
Well, first of all Jason, I assume you mean the PGA Tour and not the PGA of America, which runs the Ryder Cup and PGA Championship. I don't think the Tour would ever go overseas, although the Nationwide Tour starts their season in Australia and Panama. The best possibility, I think, is to keep having WGC events in Europe and (maybe soon) Asia, which looks like both will continue happening.
andy (kansas city)
Jason - This tourney just doesnt have the excitement factor with the absence of Tiger, Phil and Ernie. It goes to show those 3 golfers mean so much for the game. You agree?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:38 PM)
Of course. Those players really energize any tournament they play in (but we can't criticize Els; he wasn't eligible to play in this event), but there are still plenty of great players around, as we're seeing this week. The Tour is bigger than just Tiger and Phil.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:44 PM)
This is going to be a FANTASTIC tournament down the stretch today. Appleby is looking for the threepeat, Cambo is better than most fans realize and Singh is, well, he's Vijay Singh. 'Nuff said. Anyone have a prediction for the back nine?
Jason (Taiwan)
Here in Taiwan we love the movie "TinCup". Do you know of any tour player who has "all the shots" but sometimes the mental game holds them back?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:47 PM)
How about Pat Perez? Hits the ball a long way and has the talent, but makes Steve Pate look like Retief Goosen on the course. He's been known to scream, yell, cuss and even flip off his own golf ball when it doesn't go into the hole.
dave atlanta ga
Are ryder cup points awarded this week eventhough it is a small field? (still just the top 10 receive points?)
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:48 PM)
Yes, they are since it's an official event. That's good news for guys like Taylor, Leonard and Bryant.
Dylan (MA)
i kno its early but who do you have at the british open?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:49 PM)
You're right, it's really early. But I've been pressed for a pick all week, so I've been going with a somewhat unknown player at a somewhat unknown course in Royal Liverpool. My pick is David Howell, who has climbed to #13 in the world, but could walk through these galleries at Kapalua today and go totally unnoticed. He reminds me a lot of Retief Goosen.
Steven (MA)
How many majors do you see tiger winning this year?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:51 PM)
One or two. Such a tough question, though. I don't think he'll get shut out, as he did in '03 and '04. But he won't win three -- there are too many good players out there for him to accomplish that.
John (Virginia)
Who do you think are the most overrated and underrated players in golf today?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:53 PM)
Well, for underrated, I just wrote about David Howell -- he might be my pick there, although Goosen is still better than most people realize. Hmmm...overrated...I'll go with Davis Love III, who hasn't won in a few years, but is still consistently mentioned as one of the top golfers on Tour.
sean (california)
Who do you think win be the most successful player this year out of the fab four?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:54 PM)
First of all, Sean, they're the Fab Five -- Goosen is even ranked ahead of Els right now. I'll say Woods, he's the best player, so it stands to reason he'll have the best season.
Kurt (Philadelphia, PA)
Why is Sergio Garcia continually brought up and adored by the media? He tends to be listed as best player never to win a major, but I think that is Dimarco. Dimarco is clearly more consistent and Garcia (like Perez) I think lacks the mental toughness to win a major. Your thoughts?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:56 PM)
Great point, Kurt. I think Sergio gets a lot of attention because he was a prodigy, running around Medinah when he was 19 or so. I agree with you -- DiMarco's game a lot more major ready than that of Garcia. So is Tim Clark, David Howell and Adam Scott. Which brings us to this question...
sean (los angeles)
is sergio garcia ever going to win a major
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:58 PM)
Ever? Yes. Absolutely. But you've got to remember, he's only 25 years old. This guy's got 20 more years of good golf in him, which means 80 majors. I can't see him going 0-for-80. That said, I do think it will take a few more years until he gets one -- his putting isn't nearly good enough.
Sam (Utah)
Do you think that Michelle Wie will ever make the cut in a men's tournament?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (7:59 PM)
Yeah, she may just do it next Friday. I'm going to reserve judgment until I get to Waialae CC in a few days, but I think she's ready to take the next step. We may get four days of Wie next week at the Sony.
Dylan (MA)
Who do you see winning a major this year, Jason Gore or Sergio Garcia?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (8:00 PM)
Neither one. I don't even think Gore has qualified for any of the four majors yet, so I guess that means Garcia has a better chance, but I don't see it happening.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (8:01 PM)
Vijay Singh will not stop making birdies right now! He's now tied with Cambo at -6, just one shot behind Appleby!
Kurt (Philadelphia, PA)
Do you think the Woods/Furyk combination is a major breakthrough for USA in Ryder/Presidents Cup play? Their teamwork was remarkable and their games suit eachother well in match play.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (8:05 PM)
Absolutely. Tom Lehman would be crazy not to pair Woods/Furyk and DiMarco/Mickelson for four matches each at the K Club this year. That's half the battle right there and Lehman won't have to deal with the problems that Hal Sutton had in pairing his players. If Leonard and Verplank make the team again (and Verplank ccould be a solid captain's pick if he doesn't make the top-10 on points), that could be another team. Everything is falling into place very nicely.
TheMan865 (Orlando)
Stuart Appleby has got this one in the bag.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (8:07 PM)
Wow. Bold prediction. I like it. Don't necessarily agree with it, but I like the strong sense of opinion.
Tim (Atlanta)
Make you predictions for who will win each of the four majors.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (8:08 PM)
Tim, I've been asked this question a lot this week. I reserve the right to change my mind as the season moves along, but for right now I'm going with Retief Goosen at the Masters, Tiger Woods at the Open, David Howell at the British and Tim Clark at the PGA.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (8:09 PM)
C'mon, SportsNation folks...I'd love to hear your picks...I very well could be 0-for-4 right now...
Patrick (Fort Collins)
Tiger, Tiger, Tiger and..ummm.. oh Tiger
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (8:10 PM)
Well, we have one of four in common...anyone else?
Frederick (DC)
How will Fred Funk do on the Senior Tour?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (8:11 PM)
Speaking of major winners, Funk turns 50 right before the U.S. Senior Open at Prairie Dunes. I could definitely see him winning that event.
John (Virginia)
Chris Dimarco- Masters David Duval- British Open Tiger Woods- U.S. Open Tiger Woods- PGA Championship
Donnie (Texas)
Couples for the Pga
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (8:12 PM)
That would really be something!
Jesse Columbus Oh
The winners of the four majors will beMasters: John DalyOpen: Bo Van PeltBritish: Zach JohnsonPGA: Olin BrowneNo Tiger, Phil, or Vijay
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (8:13 PM)
Jeez, and I thought I was going out on a limb with some of my picks...Jesse, it would be a crazy season if that happens...way to some gutsy picks!
Victor (Chicago)
Hey Jason, Im a big David Duval fan and Im glad that he showed a little bit of his old self in his last match he played last year. Now do you think this will bring back the firey competetor he was before he struggled? Also how many events will he be in and when will his first event be? Thanks so much.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (8:15 PM)
Getting a lot of Duval questions over the last few days. I've said it before and I'll say it again...I think he'll have flashes of his old self, but he'll also struggle at times. When it's all said and done, Duval will be right around the top-125 when the season ends.
Charlie (Buffalo, NY)
Who is going to come out on top at Kapalua?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (8:16 PM)
Charlie, stay tuned...we've got a three-way tie for the lead right now! Great stuff...Appleby, Cambo and Singh all at 6-under...going to be a great finish!
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (8:17 PM)
Folks, Brad Faxon will be in here in just a minute, so get those questions going for Brad!!!
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (8:18 PM)
For those who don't know, Brad is from Rhode Island, he won in Hartford last year and he just had knee surgery. Ask Brad about this tournament, his upcoming season or his beloved Patriots and Red Sox...
Brad Faxon (8:21 PM)
hello it is nice to be inside where the wind is not blowing 25 mph
Donnie (Texas)
HI to fax and I nedd a tip. I am a 4 handicap player at 53 yrs of age and I am getting the yeps on putts around 3 to 5 feet. Help me please.
Brad Faxon (8:25 PM)
donnie, the yips are common on shorter putts when you are afraid of missing. It is a mindset that you can change with better thoughts. I believe that no grip, putter or type of stroke can permanently change the yips. You have to change the way you think. I try to never worry whether or not the putt is going to go in. That sounds opposite but the less you try the more they go in
John (OR)
how's the knee holding up so far, and what's the prognosis for the near future?
Brad Faxon (8:27 PM)
john, my knee is pretty good considering I am 4 months out of ACL recosntruction. This is the hardest course to walk on TOUR so I was glad to make it thru 72 without too much trouble
b0bo (syracuse ny)
the high scores being submitted this week, will they hurt in future attempts to attract the top players to the tournament?
Brad Faxon (8:29 PM)
My feeling is most everyone that wins a tournament wants to be here. The wind can really frustrate you here especially on the greens. It is too bad both Tiger and Phil skipped this week. Mercedes is a great sponsor and we want them here.
Arbatrary (Detroit)
Fax, who in your mind is the best golfer under 25? Which Golfer do you see having a break out year?
Brad Faxon (8:30 PM)
Sean O'Hair for the men and Paula Creamer for the women
Paul (Chattanooga, TN)
Brad, the new greens at Kapalua look like they are in immaculate condition. Are they putting as fast as it appears? Or is some of that speed a by-product of the high winds? Secondly, as one of the most traditionally consistent putters on tour, how do you adjust your putting in such strong winds? Thanks.
Brad Faxon (8:33 PM)
Paul, the new greens are perfect. The combo of the wind and the new greens has made putting very tough especially shorter putts. The wind is way more tough than the speed of the new greens. I actually vary my routine sometimes to hit the putt when it isn't gusting!
Stu (Pittsburgh)
If the Steelers beat the Colts and the Pats beat the Broncos, will the Pats beat the Steelers?
Brad Faxon (8:34 PM)
Stu, yes that would be true! In Foxboro I may add
Brendan (Chicago)
Are there any good-looking young players coming up right now? Anybody whose name we might not know?
Brad Faxon (8:36 PM)
Two of the most impressive guys last year were Jason Bohn and Gore. O'Hair for 22 was awesome, but there are so many good guys now I really am not sure. The guy that won Q school, John Holmes, hits it a massive distance so watch out for him
Brad Faxon (8:37 PM)
Thanks everyone for the questions I have to go catch a flight to Oahu to get ready for the Sony Open. Talk to you later
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (8:38 PM)
Thanks to Brad Faxon for joining us here in The Show! Keep those golf questions coming, we'll have more players joining us soon.
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (8:39 PM)
By the way, Vijay Singh on fire right now...6-under for the day. Doing a reverse of what he did last year, when he lost a four-shot lead on the final day.
Ted ( Hawaii)
Do you think Ted Purdy has a chance to win 1 or 2 majors this year? I think he is very under rated.
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (8:40 PM)
1 or 2? Let's stick with trying for one, for now. I like Purdy, he's a good player and has plenty of worldwide experience, but he's only played in five career majors, so he may not be quite ready to win one yet.
jill (islip, ny)
did campbell just lose it all with that bunker shot?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (8:42 PM)
Jill, that shot definitely hurt Cambo. He's been in the hunt for three days and he's a guy who doesn't make a lot of mistakes. With Singh and Appleby playing so well, Campbell may be close to out of this thing.
John (OR)
Who's coming in next?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (8:43 PM)
When I know, you'll know. We're getting players as they come off the course, so it's a bit tough. But I promise we'll have more players in here soon, just stick with us.
dick (phoenix)
Jason, what is your opinion on Tiger Woods' comments about the additions made to Augusta National. He said the additions narrow the tournament contenders down to about 4-5 people. I was wondering if you have personally seen these additions and if these changes would have that big of an impact on the tournament.
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (8:45 PM)
I haven't been down there since the changes, but I've seen plenty of photos and heard plenty from the players who have been there recently. The list of players who can win is more than 4-5, but might not total more than, say, 15. That means we won't see a surprise champion at The Masters. They're setting the course up so long and hard that a top player is almost assured of winning.
Ray (Melbourne, Australia)
Which rookie/s are you tipping to have a good year?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (8:47 PM)
Ryan Moore is a virtual lock to be a top player -- and soon. Bill Haas will also have success. But the guy I really like is Camilo Villegas, a 22-year-old from Colombia who played at U. of Florida. Watch out for him this year.
Dylan (Missouri)
What ever happened to Ty Tryon?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (8:48 PM)
Ty didn't make it through Q School once again. I believe he'll be plying his craft on the Hooters Tour and Canadian Tour once again.
Shawn (Albany)
How impressive is Vijay's round today?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (8:50 PM)
Shawn, this may go down as one of the best rounds he has ever played. To show you how well he is playing, there were 84 rounds played entering today (28 players, 3 rounds so far for each) and Olin Browne's opening-round 69 was the best score. If Vijay finishes par-par, he'll shoot 66 to win. What a player.
Jeff (Rochester NY)
HEy whats up dude whats harder to play in, rain or wind
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (8:51 PM)
Any Tour pro will tell you he'd rather it wet than windy. Rain actually makes the greens soft, so you can hold them on approach shots, making it easier. Wind can play all kinds of tricks.
harry (chicago)
Jason, Will Michelle Wie make the cut at the Sony next week, and who is your pick to win the West Coast Swing?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (8:53 PM)
For now, I'm saying yes, she will win...but I want to wait until I get to the Sony to make my opinion. As far as the West Coast swing, well, if Vijay holds on, he's got a great jump on it...he always plays well at the Sony, too. But there are some California guys who play well on the West Coast. Maybe someone like Arron Oberholser can get a few top-5 finishes and win the swing.
Chris (Waterbury, CT)
Jason do you know if the Players Championship will be moving to May and what is your opinion on it being a legitimate fifth major.
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (8:55 PM)
The rumor has been around for a long time and I think we'll finally see it come true when we have a new schedule next year. As far as it being a fifth major, it's not. It's a second-tier event, just below the four majors and above everything else. Not sure why everyone wants to make it a fifth major. The seniors have five majors and it seems like the importance of winning one is watered down.
logan (lincoln)
I don't know if you follow much college golf, but if you do, which current college player do you think will be the next "star" on the PGA Tour?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (8:57 PM)
I follow it a bit. According to my friend Ryan Herrington at Golf World (who's a college golf guru), Matt Every from U. of Florida is going to be a star. I also like Brian Harman, the lefty from UGA who looks like a Mickelson clone.
Mike (PA)
Do you think this is the year Jim Furyk adds a second major?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (8:58 PM)
I wouldn't bet against him. I think Furyk's going to have a monster season. He's such a good player. I would think his best chances this year are the U.S. Open or PGA.
Dylan (Wilmington,Ma )
Can you see Jim Furyk coming into the picture to win down the stretch?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (8:59 PM)
Today? Nah...he'd have to go birdie-birdie-eagle on some tough holes just to have a shot. This is Vijay's event to win...and Appleby will be there to clean up the mess if he falters.
Stephanie (Newington, CT)
Jason what major do you tend to look forward to most?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:02 PM)
Stephanie, there's nothing like Augusta in April. Covering that event is just an incredible experience. It's also the first major of the year, so there's so much anticipation towards the event. It's definitely my favorite to cover, although if I were a player and could win only one, I'd pick the U.S. Open -- I like the romantic notion that any person in the country can win the event if they play well enough.
John (OR)
What about in the junior ranks? Is there a star-in-the-making who's in that 16-17 year old range?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:03 PM)
Watch out for a kid from China named Hu Mu. He's already been on the cover of Golf Digest and is being touted as the next Tiger.
Dylan (Missouri)
How long till we see Adam Scott really breaking through and really being one of top tier players week in and week out?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:04 PM)
I think that happened about 2 years ago. OK, so maybe he's in the second tier, one notch below the Fab Five, but he could reach that elite status in the next year or two.
Mark (Marshall, MI)
Jason, I want your job. Where should I apply?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:05 PM)
If I decide to never leave Maui (decent chance at this point), the job is all yours, Mark.
Dylan (Wilmington,Ma )
Do you see any no names like Ben curtis was winning a major?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:07 PM)
So you're asking me to predict the unpredictable? That sounds, uh, kinda tough. I see a few top-level players winning majors this year that are unknown to the casual fan, but not necessarily no-names to diehard fans.
Donnie (Texas)
Vijay wins again?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:08 PM)
Sure looks like it, Donnie. Although incredibly enough, this will be his first win at Kapalua -- seems like he's in the hunt every year.
Dylan (Missouri)
Who are the nicest guys you have met on tour?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:09 PM)
Some of the veteran players are very nice and very accomodating with the media. Joey Sindelar, Bart Bryant, Billy Andrade...the list goes on and on.
scott penrose (roseville ca)
what was your most memorable moment in golf?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:10 PM)
Well, how about my personal favorite moment of the past year? Personally, my favorite moment came about 3 hours after Chris DiMarco made the final putt of the Presidents Cup. Sitting in the press center, writing a recap of the event, I was keeping an eye on the Patriots/Steelers game, which was on the TV next to me. As the team (plus captain Jack Nicklaus and assistant Jeff Sluman) started walking towards the interview room for their group interview, the first two men stopped right in front of me -- Nicklaus and Tiger. They just couldn't get past a tight game with less than a minute left. Within seconds, the rest of the team followed suit. So now we had the entire U.S. squad cheering together during a football game after their big win. It really showed a lot of camaraderie. Sorry, that was a long answer, but it was my favorite moment of '05.
Donnie (Texas)
How do you like Ryan Palmers game for this year?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:12 PM)
I think he's a good player. He was 60th on the money list last year, which is about where I see him staying. Not a great player, but not someone who will be worrying about keeping his card from year to year.
Andrew (Peoria, IL)
Will Jason Gore be able to bounce back from this tournament and have a good season or just become another person who failed to live up to the hyper?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:14 PM)
He'll definitely bounce back. Gore is an all-or-nothing player, meaning he won't consistently churn out top-10 finishes every week, but he could miss 8 cuts in a row, then win 2 straight events. Nothing wrong with that.
Grant (Detroit)
Hey Jason, you redicted Vijay hitting the wall and sliding in 2006. Tell your boss I want to interview for your job.
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:15 PM)
That's true, Grant. The job could be yours soon. Although I also retracted that prediction in our new golf blog after seeing Singh play just one round in '06.
Ray (Melbourne, Australia)
What are the odds or % of a rookie finishing Top 125?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:16 PM)
The odds are very, very good. In fact, I think we could see about 8-10 rookies make an impact this year. Guys like Ryan Moore, Bill Haas, Camilo Villegas and Troy Matteson are all very good players.
Mark (Waltham, MA)
Jason do you think Tiger will surpass Nicklaus in professional major wins and if so predict what year it will happen?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:17 PM)
I think it's only a matter of time. I'll give him an average of one per year for the next nine years, meaning he'll break Nicklaus' record at, oh, say the 2014 Masters.
Brian (Vacaville, CA)
What do you think guys like D Howell and Richard Johnson will do on the PGA tour this year?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:19 PM)
Brian, if you've been reading these chats over the last few days, you know what a big David Howell fan I am. I think he'll fare very well. Richard Johnson has been on Tour for a few years and hasn't done a whole lot, but fellow Swede Carl Pettersson was here chatting a few days ago and said Johnson is a very good player.
ryan (acton)
What has happened to Ben Curtis since the British Open win?
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:20 PM)
He actually played very well a few times last year, like at the Western Open and in Hartford. He's still pretty young -- and he's got a Tour card locked up for a few more years. I think he'll turn out to be a decent player.
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:21 PM)
Vijay Singh is off the course at 8-under after shooting a final-round 66! What a round by Singh.
Dylan (Wilmington MA)
it appears vijay will win , do u think this is one of his best rounds ever
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:22 PM)
I'd have to look at his final rounds when he won his first PGA at Sahalee and his Masters in 2000, but this has to be up there.
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:23 PM)
Ladies and gentlemen, Vaughn Taylor the two-time defending champion at the Reno-Tahoe Open, will join us very soon.
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:23 PM)
Start asking questions now for Vaughn Taylor, who improved every day this week, shooting 74-73-72-71. He's in a share of fourth place right now.
Jason Sobel, ESPN golf editor (9:26 PM)
Vaughn lives in Augusta, Ga. (they play a little golf there, you know) and enjoys fishing. Fire away those questions...he'll be here in a minute!
Vaughn Taylor (9:33 PM)
Hi, thanks for having me here.
Scott (Michigan)
Vaughn,How do you feel your chances are of winning a major this year?
Vaughn Taylor (9:35 PM)
I've only played in two majors in my life, so I probably need a little more experience, but you never know.
alex (boston)
hey vaughn nice shooting. what is your advice for a junior golfer who has asperations of being a professional golfer?
Vaughn Taylor (9:35 PM)
First of all, work hard and just practice the right things and believe in yourself.
Dylan (Missouri)
vaughn what new clubs on the market have caught your eye?
Vaughn Taylor (9:37 PM)
The new TaylorMade R7 435cc -- it just came to us, so it should be out in not too long.
Josh (Southington, CT)
Vaughn what were the winds gusts getting up to today on the course and would you say the 66 VJ shot today is like a 62 with no wind?
Vaughn Taylor (9:38 PM)
It was gusting up to 30 today and Vijay's 66 was very impressive.
Andrew (Peoria, IL)
What do you think has been the best performance of your professional career?
Vaughn Taylor (9:39 PM)
Reno last year. I played much better the second time I won. The first three days was probably the best golf I played.
Ryan (New York)
Vaughn, if you could pick one person as a partner to play with who would it be and why?
Vaughn Taylor (9:40 PM)
Tiger, because he's the best player in the world and you can see what you've got up against him.
Keoki (Portland)
Vaughn, what's your playing schedule for the next 5-6 weeks?
Vaughn Taylor (9:41 PM)
I'm playing the next four tournaments, skipping the ATandT.
Vaughn Taylor (9:43 PM)
Goodbye, thanks for the questions. See you next time!
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (9:44 PM)
Thanks to Vaughn Taylor for joining us in The Show! Let's keep the golf chat going for 15 more minutes...
John (Oklahoma)
Who Is Going To Win The Mercedes Championship,Jason?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (9:45 PM)
Well, I'm going to go out on a limb and say either Appleby or Singh. Here comes the biggest shot of the tournament...
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (9:47 PM)
Not bad...Appleby's going to have to get up-and-down from there to send it to a playoff. Can he do it? What do you all think?
Dylan (Wilmington MA)
i think he'll do it and then win in the playoff
Rich Goldwater (Lake Havasu, Az)
Chips to within 8 feet and lips the put to give Vijay the win
Bob (Nebraska)
You cant doubt a professionals short game, they are all golden. Playoff time.
John (OR)
Yes, mark it down. PLayoff on the horizon. Appleby is going to win this thing.
Scott (Michigan)
This should be exciting....looks like Vijay will pull this one off
alex (boston)
i dont know, looks like a tough shot with the ridge there. the putt will be tough with the wind and everything. i hope he does though.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (9:50 PM)
As he was leaving, Vaughn Taylor said it's a tough chip from there...very long, as you can see on TV.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (9:50 PM)
Here it comes...
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (9:51 PM)
What a fantastic shot by Appleby!!!
mark (oklahoma)
Appleby just gave himself a chance-he is a class act
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (9:51 PM)
That shot took guts. For those of you who said playoff, looks like you may be right.
alex (boston)
how clutch is that.
Rich Goldwater (Lake Havasu, Az)
Ok.....He chips to within 4 feet and we go to a playoff
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (9:52 PM)
Hey, look! Michael Campbell is still playing. Terrible back nine for Cambo, who was my pick to win entering the week.
Donnie (Texas)
At work no t.v. how long of a putt?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (9:53 PM)
He just made a 4-footer -- we're going to a playoff, folks!
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (9:54 PM)
That might mean extra holes for The Show as well. As long as you guys keep pitching in, I'll keep the chat going until the event is over...
Ryan (New York)
Mr Sobel, what is the one thing that makes the difference between an average course vs a great course the greens, fairways, location?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (9:56 PM)
I think a great course can mean different things to different people. I'm a big scenery guy, so I love Pebble Beach. And by the same token, Baltusrol didn't do much for me. Some people love older, traditional courses, some love newer slicker courses -- all depends on a person's opinion.
John (OR)
Told you. Appleby is going to right the ship and win his third one.
mark (oklahoma)
I don't like his chances against VJ although I hope he wins-no man his age should have to bury a wife..
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (9:57 PM)
That was a sad and touching piece that Tom Rinaldi showed just earlier in the telecast.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (9:58 PM)
OK, let's get those picks in everyone! Vijay or Appleby? Who's going to win? I'll keep a tally of your votes...and I'll give mine, too...
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (9:58 PM)
Singh wins on the second playoff hole...just a hunch. OK, 1-0 Singh so far...
stephen (laguna beach, CA)
vijay
Dave W (Sacramento, Ca)

Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:02 PM)
10-6...anyone else?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:03 PM)
Votes have been tallied...SportsNation thinks Vijay will win, 10 votes to 6.
ash (easter island)
is there an advantage going 1st on the tee?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:03 PM)
Most players would rather go first and put the pressure on their opponent...although I'm not so sure either of these players ever feel much pressure.
Brandon Pogue (Chicago, IL)
great drive apple
Ryan (New York)
Appleby will win on the first hole, Vijay will be to the left in the rough after the tee shot!
Ryan (New York)
Mr Sobel how many stroke lead would you need to beat Tiger in one round at your favorite course pebble beach?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:05 PM)
If it's set up for U.S. Open conditions, he might have to give me 18 a side. Seriously. I played the course two days after the final round in 2000 -- not easy.
ellie (tampa)
hi.. sorry for the bother.. just a quick question...
ellie (tampa)
where is kapalua?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:06 PM)
Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii. One of the most beautiful places in the world.
Brandon P (Chicago, IL)
Lucky bounce VJ
Keith (Cleveland)
Why does Vijay change putting styles almost 2-3 times every year? If he stayed with one (ala Nicklaus, Woods) wouldnt he be better off?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:07 PM)
I still wouldn't be surprised to see him go back to the belly putter. He used that for the majority of his 9-win season in '04.
Greg (STL)
I like Apples as much as the next guy, but he needs to aware of the course mics. I haven't heard that many 4 letter words on a golf broadcast since Tiger at Pebble!
John (OR)
What's the grain like on the greens? Do they run toward the Maui Mountains or toward the ocean? I've heard several different theories on that. What's the truth over there.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:08 PM)
I believe most of the grains run towards the ocean, meaning they'll be hitting (and putting) the ball downgrain. That's why you saw Appleby's chip fly so quickly to the hole.
Ryan (New York)
who is better at the short game Singh or Appleby?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:09 PM)
Not many players are better than Singh. I'll take him, but it's close.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:09 PM)
Wow! There's that downgrain on the green, see how fast Appleby's ball rolled! That's one heck of a hard bunker shot coming back.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:10 PM)
Not a great shot by Vijay, but I'd have to say he has the advantage right now.
Rich (Ladera Ranch, CA)
Down w/ Vijay!!!!!!
adam (columbia, Missouri)
appleby will do it again
stephen (laguna beach, CA)
jason, covering the tour for so long, what is the biggest difference, in your opinion, is the difference between an amateur and the players on TOUR.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:11 PM)
Good timing for this question. The top professionals can get up and down from anywhere, especially in crucial situations. Let's see if both of these guys can get up and down here...
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:12 PM)
For the record, Singh has 37 yards to the hole. Appleby has 32 feet to the hole.
John (OR)
Vijay going to putt that thing?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:12 PM)
Good question...we'll see...
Nap (Charlotte)
Easier shot out of the sand then a 75 foot put?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:12 PM)
I think Vijay's is easier...but what do I know?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:14 PM)
Decent putt by Vijay...he'll have about 6-8 feet for birdie.
Cole (MA)
Great shot by Vijay
Michael (San Francisco)
How long can they go before they have to come back tomorrow?
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:15 PM)
We have at least 45 minutes of light left...so we could go maybe 3 more playoff holes.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:15 PM)
See what I know...obviously not as tough a bunker shot as I thought! Wow, what a great shot by Appleby!
Nap (Charlotte)
Stu is the sand-master!
Tim (New York)
thought he had that there
ash (easter island)
wow
John (OR)
That's a bunker shot with some attitude. Nice effort
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:16 PM)
Shades of the '05 Honda Classic, anyone???
George (MD)
No way V.J. makes this
Lloyd (Woodbury, NY)
nope, must of missed that one
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:17 PM)
Last year at the Honda, Singh missed a three-footer in a playoff, giving Padraig Harrington the win.
Michael (San Francisco)
Good night Vijay!!
Ryan (New York)
Congrats to Stuart well deserved win.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:18 PM)
Stuart Appleby is your threepeat champion!!!
Ralph (Englewood,CO)
wow!
Lloyd (Woodbury, NY)
choke
Alex (Los Angeles)
Dang.
Darrell (Australia)
Aussie Aussie Aussie!!!
John (OR)
Stone cold last two shots by Appleby. As the announcer just said....let's hope he can have a good YEAR, now.
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:19 PM)
Absolutely. He didn't follow up last year's win here with much for the rest of the season.
Michael (San Francisco)
Bet he wishes they put the US open in Maui!!!! Don't think they could make the course tough enough for that.
Ryan (New York)
Aussie Aussie Aussie OY OY OY
Lloyd (Woodbury, NY)
what a let down for vijay after such a great round
Donnie (Texas)
threepeat
Lloyd (Woodbury, NY)
if i was him id take my mill and stay in hawaii for awhile
Tommy (WI)
What a shot!! Reminds me of JD at the 2004 Buick!!!
Jason Sobel, ESPN.com golf editor (10:20 PM)
Good call!
Ryan (New York)
NFL Prime Time is next!
