Todd Martin (11:22 AM)
Hello everyone! I look forward to chatting with you again this year! I'll be logging on for my first chat on Monday, June 25 at 4 p.m. EDT. I look forward to your questions!
Wimbledon Moderator (9:00 AM)
We will also have our team of writers, Greg Garber and Bonnie DeSimone, chatting each day at 1 p.m ET! Send your questions for them as well!
Dougie Fresh: DC
Big Andy Roddick fan. How did he look today? Is he still working with Connors? He is the one guy that could probably give Federer a run for his money on grass. Peace.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:04 PM)
Hi DF: Andy was just in his press conference, talking about how he and Justin Gimelstob had some pre-match bets going... primarily about who would have the most and best dives on grass.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:06 PM)
Roddick won in three sets. No word yet on who won the diving competition, but Andy looks loose and happy. This marks the year anniversary of his collaboration with Connors -- they began working together after Wimbledon in 2006. Jimmy was here today. And yes, Roddick is surely one of the guys that can give Federer a game on grass.
Price (New Orleans)
which American men (outside Roddick and Blake) can make a run into the Round of 16?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:07 PM)
Price -- Greg and I aren't too optimistic about that one...
Bonnie DeSimone (1:08 PM)
Blake will have his hands full with Igor Anrdeev of Russia in the first round. That's scheduled for today but could get washed out.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:09 PM)
Andreev's forehand is an awesome weapon, especially on clay. He won't be able to run around it as much on grass, but it's still a tough draw for Blake, his second straight in a Slam (he lost to toweing Ivo Karlovic in the first round at the French).
Marion (Boston)
Did Hingis come back from down a set in her opener today? I missed it. If so, how far can she go?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:10 PM)
Hey Marion... I'm writing that match today. Hingis saved two match points, then bulldozed the kid in the third.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:11 PM)
Hingis just told us she feels at about 70 percent of full strength because of back and hip injuries that have kept her from playing for the last month. We'll see how she recovers. It's the 10th anniversary of her win here and one of the things I'll be looking at in my piece is whether she can contend for a Slam title at some point again.
Brooks (Cambridge)
When I saw that Roddick won at Queens last week for the 4th time, I asked myself, Why doesn't Roger play there and dominate? But now I can ask you that same question.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:14 PM)
Roger has always preferred Halle, in Germany. It's been a good-luck tournament for him... has won it the last four years in lockstep with Wimbledon wins...
Bonnie DeSimone (1:15 PM)
He played neither this year, as you know. We'll see if his luck changes, but he may have needed the rest more than he needed matches on what is obviously his best surface.
von (nc)
who do u think will take womens title?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:17 PM)
Unfortunately, the final will probably be played in the quarters when Serena Williams meets Justine Henin. We can only hope it's a better match than it was in Paris.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:17 PM)
Mauresmo has been playing well and you can never count Venus or Sharapova out.
Brandon (MA)
What if Roger ends up winning 16 Majors, but never the French Open? Would that dichotomy almost be worse for him, as it would highlight that one weakness (and I use that word very lightly)?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:19 PM)
Brandon, it might be viewed as more of a black mark if it hadn't happened to a few other great players, Sampras most recently. I could shoot the question back to you -- which would you rather have in your trophy case, one each of four Slams or the variety pack of 16 in three Slams?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:20 PM)
In the same way that Nadal could say Federer has prevented him from having a nice run at No. 1, Federer may have to live with the fact that he played during the reign of an extraordinary clay court master.
Brooks (Cambridge)
Since Roddick can't seem to figure out Roger's game on grass, why doesn't he opt to play at Halle as well, therefore giving him a good look at Roger's game before Wimbledon starts? I always assumed Roger didn't play Queens so that the other big players didn't get any reads on his game.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:22 PM)
That would be a good question for Andy, and I wish I had asked it in the press conference just concluded. I don't think players of Federer's caliber are worried about showing too many cards at a Slam tune-up... but it may be more useful for Andy (or Roger) to get a W in a tune-up than to play the other Big Dude.
BJ Carmel, NY
Roddick giving Federer a run on grass???? Wouldnt he have to beat him first before that can be considered?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:23 PM)
BJ, that's a legit question. By "run" I meant "competitive match."
Robert (NM)
What about Serena Williams? Her confidence soars on grass, and I think she has the potential to win here yet again. Henin played very well at Eastbourne too though.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:23 PM)
They're my two favorites, as I just said, but we'll have to watch that one a lot earlier in the draw than we'd like.
Eric (NYC)
Speaking of women's finals...the Henin/Mauresmo final at Eastbourne was pretty entertaining. all 3 sets were pretty tight. You dont think Mauresmo will repeat?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:24 PM)
That was a good match, Eric, and a good indication of both women's form. Mauresmo looks fully recovered now and made the transition from clay to grass nicely.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:25 PM)
I wouldn't be surprised to see a repeat of last year's final participants, but Henin is playing such an A+ game right now and seems so tough mentally... hard to bet against her.
Hank the Tank (DC)
Where would you place the odds of Pete Sampras taking one more crack at Wimbledon? You know the thought has crossed his mind now that he's playing again.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:27 PM)
Lots of rumors about that right now, Hank. He may be considering it but I would bet against it. I think Pete knows he quit with an absolutely perfect ending. But athletes can always surprise you (see Jordan, Michael).
Ryan (Boston)
How much of a dent do you think Ivo Karlovic can make in this tournament? If he ever has a great result at a grand slam, this one will be it, but he has a tough customer in the 3rd round (Djokovic). He's been hot lately, do you think he can break through to the second week?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:29 PM)
Guys hate it when they see Karlovic in their path. His serve comes out of a helicopter and he moves surprisingly well for a guy his size. Obviously the surface plays to his strengths, but I would give the edge to Djokovic in that match -- he's a more complete player.
Michael (Brooklyn, NY)
Am interested in your thoughts on the announcement of equal prize money for both men and women this year. Were you surprised?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:30 PM)
Not surprised about the annoucement but somewhat surprised it took so long. There's no question the women bring in as much or more commercially to the sport, and they should share equally in the bounty.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:31 PM)
Folks -- Can't tell you how much I/we appreciate all this traffic! I'm about to leave you in the consummately competent hands of my writing partner, Greg Garber. We'll be playing here all fortnight... talk to you again soon.
Bjorn Borg (Sweden)
C'mon, Andy!!!!!
Greg Garber (1:32 PM)
Sam (Arlington, Va)
What do you think of Donald Young playing in the Juniors this year? Would he be better served trying to up his rankings in futures/challengers in anticipation for US Open
Greg Garber (1:34 PM)
Sam: There were many (this reporter incuded) who thought he should have been playing juniors out of the box. He has all the shots, but he's physically small and needs a lot more muscle. Now, because of a tough couple of years, he needs to rebuild his confidence.
BJ Carmel, NY
When you consider that the best two players of the last 30 years (Sampras, Federer) have never won a Grand Slam on clay, is that a sign that the game has become much more offensive?
Greg Garber (1:36 PM)
BJ: Good point. Yes, it's more offensive but don't forget that Sampras rached the semifinals at Roland Garros (1996) and Federer made the last two finals. That shows you how complete they were and are.
Wenger (NYC)
Once again, American men off to a bad start...Querry is gone, Ginepri is losing to F Gonzo, provided it was a tough draw. Court surface was used as an excuse for Roland Garros, what is their excuse this time on grass?
Greg Garber (1:38 PM)
How about they're struggling? Roddick's win over Gimelstob -- one way or another, a US man was destined to win -- was the first Grand Slam singles victory for US men in nearly five months. It could be the last one, too. Blake against Andreev, in some minds, is a close match. It was a tough draw for US men; after Roddick and Blake, who were the only seeded players, seven American drew seeded players. Fish (No. 2 Nadal) and Ginepri (No. 5 Gonzalez) got the worst of it.
jeremy (stowe, vt)
Bonnie...I am not challenging your statement about women bringing in the same or more financially, but am curious as to where I can find factual evidence to support the claim, so I can finally prove to my friends that it is true?
Greg Garber (1:42 PM)
Jeremy: It blows hot and cold. The TV folks say that some years women do better in the ratings and some years it's the men. I DO know that at Wimbledon, historically, they charge more for the men's final than the women's final in terms of tickets. That used to be the All-England Club's rationale for unequal pay.
stevie b (ny, ny)
do you think sampras can take federer out in any of their scheduled exhibitions?
Greg Garber (1:44 PM)
Stevie B: Sure, why not? He recently hit balls with Bjorn Borg and didn;t try very hard. He also hit with sampras for two days before the Indian Wells tournament back in the winter and I get the idea that they are becoming friends. Can't you see him throwing Pete a bone? Besides, Sampras could still beat a ot of the players on today's ATP. On a given day, he could probably play with anyone outside the top three.
Mo (Washington, DC)
Why are there so many seeds? Should we care about anyone after say, 16 unless they make it far? Since we think we know who's gonna make the later stages, why not at least mix it up earlier in the tourney(s)?
Greg Garber (1:49 PM)
Mo: Good question. The All-England Club started this new-generation seeding a few years back. Because they don;t go strictly by rankings, there were complaints that a few players outside the top 16 were losing their seeds. Now, all the Grand Slams go 32 deep -- and it's good business. There are fewer dangerous floaters. Take Venus Williams for example. She's seeded No. 23 here, and won't see Maria Sharapova until the quarters. Previously, she could have had a big-time match in any of the early rounds. Under this system, Grand Slams are more predictable with fewer upsets -- a turn of events not everyone apppreciates.
Paul (Philadelphia)
Greg, is it too early to consider the possibility that Nadal could end up as one of the 5 or 10 best players ever? The way I see it, he could end up with around 7 or 8 French Opens and probably 4 or 5 wins at the other three slams (especially after Federer retires)... what do you think?
Greg Garber (1:51 PM)
Paul: An intriguing thought -- just the reason we chat. Projecting ahead to the day Federer steps away -- the key to this proposition -- nadal should be a threat at the other three Slams, certainly Australia and the US Open. If Federer plays until he's 30 and destroys Pete Sampras' record of 14 Grand Slam titles, Nadal might get a few majors beyond the French.
Amit (Chicago)
What is the tastiest treat when attending Wimbledon? Is it the strawberries and cream?
Greg Garber (1:52 PM)
Amit: That is the ciched answer, of course. I can hear Dick Enberg in my mind at Breakfast at Wimbledon ... My favorite is the scones with clotted cream. After the matches are over, Stella Artois is the tastiest beverage of choice.
Andre, Trinidad....
I think the Winner of the Womens game is gonna come from the top half (SW) I am not betting against Venus winning...
Greg Garber (1:54 PM)
Andre: Richard Williams is picking ... Venus. Check out our story on ESPN.com a little later.
Eric (NYC)
Serena and Venus are playing doubles at Wimbledon. Whats your outlook on that? why do they do it? Wouldn't it affect their singles? Stamina, scheduling, etc.
Greg Garber (1:56 PM)
Eric: Serena -- byt the way, she's back on Court No. 2 warming up after several rain delays -- talked about this on Saturday. She said the sisters always used to enjoy doubles together but their health prevented them from continuing. They've won six Grand Slams together and an Olympic gold. This is a signal that they're healthy and enjoying their tennis again.
Todd (Gardner)
Greg, Who do you feel could make an upset run in the Women's field? And will we ever see a Britt win this thing?
Greg Garber (1:58 PM)
Todd: I don;t think there will be an upset on the women's side. The faves, in roder, are Serena Williams, Henin, Venus Williams, Mauresmo and Sharapova. That's it. I'm not sure if the UK will ever have another champion here. Tough sledding recently. Although, Henman just won the first set from Moya...
Amit (Chicago)
Has Nadal's game on grass improved enough to seriously challenge Federer's bid to win five straight? The Wimbledon final last year wasn't exactly tight...
Greg Garber (1:59 PM)
Amit: he's clearly a better, stronger player than he was a year ago. I'd say yes.
Mish Warrier (New Orleans, LA)
When would Venus and Serena meet if they kept winning? I love watching them clash...plus, I find the Williams sister very attractive!
Greg Garber (2:00 PM)
Mish: The final, since they're on opposite sides of the draw.
Steve (Indy)
What do you say to somebody who says the golden age of tennis is in the past? What can an American look forward to watching at Wimbelton?
Greg Garber (2:02 PM)
Steve: I'd say that somebody was right. half the players in the top 100 used to be Americans. No more. Look forward to good tennis. Sharapova, Vaidisova and Jankovic all learned the game in Florida. Enjoy the sport. Tht's it for me. Thanks for sending along questions. Bonnie and i will be back at 1 PM EST on Tuesday and stick around for Todd Martin who comes your way a ittle later...
Crash (Hotlanta)
Is A-Rod going to get his head in the game or are will still in a Federer dominated time period for years to come?
Todd Martin (4:02 PM)
Crash: I think Andy's head is in the game. He is quite a talent and competes harder than just about everyone other than Nadal. Fact of the matter, Federer is the best and will be for at least a little while longer.
Cire (Los Angeles)
Todd, you seem like the right person to ask: if Pete came back on tour, could he take a set off Federer?
Todd Martin (4:03 PM)
Cire: The way Pete serves, taking sets is a matter of just winning a few points on return at the right time. Winning a set is not the issue though.
Amit (Chicago)
Has Nadal's game on grass improved enough to seriously challenge Federer's bid to win five straight? The Wimbledon final last year wasn't exactly tight...
Paul (Pontiac, Illinois)
I know it's early, yet, but if Federer wins Wimbledon and continues to dominate on grass, do you think he can have a streak rivaling, possibly surpassing Nadal's? Also, how many legends in the discussion of being the "all time greatest" actually consider Federer being potentially the best?
Todd Martin (4:06 PM)
Paul: I assume you mean Nadal's streak on clay. Yes, it is possible, but it has to carry over several more years than Nadal's streak over the last couple years.
Todd Martin (4:08 PM)
Paul: The three I involve in a discussion of greatest ever are Laver, Sampras, and Federer. I am, however, not a huge fan of that discussion. They are and were the VERY best of their generations.
Cire (Los Angeles)
If Federer is the top seed, why would he play third-seeded Roddick in the semifinals? In an ideal scenario where the top 4 seeds advance, wouldn't the semis set up as 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3?
Todd Martin (4:11 PM)
Cire: The seeds are placed in groups; 3 and 4 are on separate halves, 5-8 in each quarter, 9-16, and then 17-32.
Mo (Washington, DC)
I am an avid squash player and avid tennis fan. Do you think someone like Federer, Nadal or even say, Mario Ancic (assuming none of them already play squash) pick up a squash racquet, practice for a few months and dominate professionally, given their fitness, mental toughness and athleticism?
Todd Martin (4:13 PM)
No. The most important attribute of all athletes, especially racket sport athletes, is their respective skill. Fed and Nadal would get good fast, but probably not at a professional level.
Beatrice, TX
Todd is there a reason why we don't see more top name men's coaches with women? most are coached by parents. For instance, Darren Cahill coaching one of the Williams' sisters. Also, is age the reason some coaches would not want to take on the task of turning Nalbandian around? He should have a GS and needs a great coach
Todd Martin (4:18 PM)
Beatrice: Champions come from within. Whether their parent coaches them or the highest paid coach in the game, the player is in control of their own destiny. Nalbandian is a great talent, but the answer will best come from himself, not a coach.
Shan (Chicago)
How do you rate Mardy's chances with match against Nadal tomorrow?
Todd Martin (4:19 PM)
Shan: I like Mardy's chances. He has a huge challenge in front of him, but if he competes the way he can, he has a game that can challenge Nadal substantially.
Leslie (San Jose, CA)
Tennis has two great champions in Justine Henin and Roger Federer. Do you think this hurts tennis when they win all the time. I think the rivalries are great for tennis, but maybe this is a slump time for rivalries... Where are they?
Todd Martin (4:21 PM)
Leslie: Federer and Nadal is a great rivalry. Henin has hardly been dominant over the years. She has been the most consistent, but there are always several candidates to take her out.
Amit (Chicago)
Who is your favorite to win Wimbledon on the Men's side?
Todd Martin (4:25 PM)
Amit: I would be dense not to say Federer. I got to watch him up close this week in practice and he is truly outstanding.
Eric (NYC)
Todd, great work on the Outbacks tour, you seem to be the man to beat on the tour. Now that Pete is joining, do you feel threatened about your dominance?
Todd Martin (4:26 PM)
Pete has beaten me twice this year and I struggle to handle anything he throws at me. He is still the best amongst his peers.
Andy (NC)
Todd--What's the deal with James Blake's match today? I know it's a real rough matchup for Round 1, but when's it starting? What're your predictions?
Todd Martin (4:35 PM)
Andy: It is a tough match for James. They must not have had time to make a fair start of the match today. I would assume they will play on a different court tomorrow early in the day.
Joe (Alhambra, CA)
hi, todd! after this year french open, it looks like federer has run out of ideas on beating nadal on clay. it seems that if federer really wins the french open during his prime, he has to go through nadal one way or the other. but, in my opinion, i think nadal will be stumbling through the draw next year at the french, as a handful of the other players will try to figure out on how to beat him, this is especially true for djokovic.......i think french will be the one missing link on federer resume. do you agree?
Todd Martin (4:38 PM)
Joe: There is never an end to the way you can approach matchups. I lost 17 of my first 19 matches against Sampras (impressive, I know), but won 2 out of my last 3. The biggest thing I learned was to believe just a bit more in myself and let it happen...one way or another.
Bill (San Antonio)
Will it require nothing short of an injury to Nadal or Federer for Andy Roddick to have a legitimate shot at winning Wimbledon?
Todd Martin (4:39 PM)
Bill: Hardly. I would rate Nadal as the third favorite for the title. Federer is head and shoulders ahead of the rest and Roddick is great on grass.
Steve (Newton)
I saw you and Sampras' Final on the Outback tour a few months ago. Great match. If Pete really dedicated himself, how far do you think he could advance (if at all) at Wimbledon '08?
Todd Martin (4:41 PM)
Steve: He can beat several players on grass now. Not sure how he would respond to repetitive matches or against different styles.
Eric (NYC)
Todd, you play with Johnny Mac quite a bit on the tour, back then and now. Is any of his rant on linecalls legit? Some of them are not even close, yet he would throw a tantrum regardless...was that just to throw the opponent off?
Todd Martin (4:42 PM)
Eric: To John's credit, he sees balls very well. He is not doing it to throw anyone off (in my opinion), but he is extremely biased. He wants all of his shots to be in and his opponent's out.
Cody (Lewisville, Tx)
Todd, how much could fatigue come into affect with the small amount of rest Nadal has had since the Masters Series at Hamberg? Do you see that hindering his performance, maybe even leading to an early exit this year?
Todd Martin (4:44 PM)
He is still young and goes full speed all the time. He had enough time to still play great at French. I would expect him to be ready here.
Mark (KC)
Tell me the truth: if you were born 10 years later, don't you think you would've been the best American male of this (weak) generation.
Todd Martin (4:46 PM)
Mark: Unfortunately, no. I would probably play a bigger role in the US game, but Andy would still be better and James and I would probably be somewhat level. One thing not to take for granted is the amount of motivation and inspiration the likes of Courier, Sampras, Agassi, and Chang provided me as their peer.
Carl (Lansing, MI)
Todd, will you make it back to your home state and be in Kalamazoo for the Junior Tennis Championships?
Todd Martin (4:47 PM)
Carl: Not this year. I played an exhibition with Aaron Krickstein last year. It was a blast to be back at the 'Zoo.
Sheila (Raleigh NC)
What do you think of Roddick's chances to go to the semis or finals?
Todd Martin (4:48 PM)
Sheila: I like Andy to beat everyone in the top half except for Federer. That being said, he still has a fair shot against him.
Shan(Chicago)
If you were federer's coach what will you tell him on how to beat Nadal at roland garros?
Todd Martin (4:49 PM)
Shan: Probably what every other coach would, he has to play very aggressive, making his way to net often and accepting making errors.
Bill (San Antonio)
who is your pick for the biggest surprise (men's and women's) to advance far in the tournament?
Todd Martin (4:51 PM)
Bill: Hard to say Nalbandian is a surprise, but he is a great player and things are pretty quiet around him these days. Women's side, I love the way Shahar Peer plays. She probably isn't super comfortable on grass, but she fights harder than any other woman...a great attribute.
Helene, Olympia WA
Todd, I'm interested in who you feel is the best American upcoming talent?
Todd Martin (4:53 PM)
Helene: There are some pretty talented young players in the juniors from what I hear. Despite his result today, I believe Sam Querrey is going to be a very good player.
Carl (Lansing, MI)
I always liked you growing up, but then you went to Northwestern, so I switched to Mal'avi Washington because he went to UofM. I just thought you should know.
Todd Martin (4:55 PM)
Carl: Let me get this straight, you live in Lansing, but would rather root for someone from U of M??? That is twisted. Mal, at least, is well worth the support though.
Jay (NE)
Todd, talk about Eric Butorac also known as Booty and playing with Andy Murray's brother Jaymie in doubles. This guy played D3 tennis and has now won 3 ATP tour doubles titles. Pretty impressive for a small timer.
Todd Martin (4:58 PM)
Jay: Good point. Three tourneys this YEAR. He is proof that your destiny as a tennis player does not need to be decided at the age of 18. He (and Jamie Murray) have both been unheralded, but are making a true impact by being professional and competing mentally and physically at their best.
Gopal
There seems to be a heavy biastowards british players both inthe scheduling of matches andgranting of wild cards. Why can'tthey be little bit more objective
Todd Martin (4:59 PM)
Gopal: There would be nothing better for the Wimbledon than one of their own to do well. There is no need, nor expectation, for objectivity.
Eric (NYC)
Todd: Is Donald Young officially on the ATP tour? he sometimes plays ATP, but sometimes Juniors. Is there an official cut off line?
Todd Martin (5:00 PM)
Eric: Donald is a professional. He doesn't always play tournaments that are on the ATP, but he is every bit a professional.
John Sparks West Palm Beach, Florida
Hey Todd...how's the golf game???
Todd Martin (5:01 PM)
Sparksy: Pretty suspect. Hope yours is better.
Todd Martin (5:02 PM)
Okay gang. Mardy Fish plays Rafael Nadal tomorrow afternoon. Assuming the weather is okay for that match, I will be with you at 4 EDT. Be well and thanks for the q's. Todd

Steve (CA)
Henman and Moya served up an epic match. How long do these two still have left to play?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:05 PM)
Hi Steve. Henman -- who's 32 -- won't discuss retirement. He certainly looks as if he still relishes playing and the incredible reception he gets here. Henman Hill looked like Woodstock today. Moya, who's 30, hasn't been here four of the last five years due to injury, but he said in his press conference today that he'll be back as long as his fitness holds up.
Gary Hancock (New York, NY)
Williams Sisters in the Graveyard: Have any other past champions with multiple titles been assigned to the Graveyard Court #2 for two or three rounds in the same year? I mean, come on! 5 matches last year between them and now the first match for each this year?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:07 PM)
Gary, I wasn't here last year and have to admit you're more up on the court assignments for last year... not to be flip, but people have been trying to bury the Williams sisters in many ways for a long time and they just don't go away that easily, superstition or not.
Tim (Detroit)
That Henman Moya match had to be one of the best 1st rounders in the Open Era. Your thoughts?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:10 PM)
Can't agree with you more. The atmosphere here was more than electric -- it was nuclear. Two big names playing five sets over two days with the homeboy winning... you don't get better storylines than that. I'll throw this back to you guys -- is this an argument for or against the fifth-set tiebreak in Slams?
nate stl
How long do you think Venus and Serena will continue to play their way into tournaments?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:12 PM)
I assume you're referring to the slow-starter phenomemon here, and it's a legit question. At least part of the answer would be: as long as they opt to play few or no warm-up events.
trevon, maryland
Do u think Venus Williams will repeat 2005 where she suprised everyone where beating both Sheripova and Devenport, and captured the title?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:14 PM)
Stay tuned, Trevon. Venus started slow in her match today but seems t have kicked into gear. I predicted she would have a good tournament precisely because she seems to love defying expectations here... but she obviously needs to get past the first round.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:16 PM)
To all in line for questions: Todd isn't on the chat yet because he had to attend to his coaching duties with Mardy Fish, who just lost to Rafael Nadal. He'll be on later this afternoon.
Chris (KY)
I know it's hard to predict, but what match do you think will be a better contest (if it happens): Serena/Henin or Venus/Sharapova?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:20 PM)
Both of those matches have great potential, but the fact that they would be played in the quarters (Serena-Justine) or the round of 16 (Venus-Maria) takes a little of the starch out of them in my opinion. Then again, Serena should be VERY motivated to redeem her flat French Open match against Henin... and Venus-Maria pits two of the greatest players on this surface. Root for all of them to forget it's not the final.
Rachel (Dallas, TX)
Have we seen James Blake peak? After Roger Federer failed to complete the "Roger Slam" critics/commentators started in on his age, are these comments a result of the dissapointment and/or frustation of his loss or is age an actual factor at 25? Also, we keep hearing about the young up comers, Djokovic, Murray, Nadal etc...and how than can challange top players by only getting better...are they getting better or have the games of our top players i.e. Roddick, Blake, Hewit, Nalbandian become stagnate?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:24 PM)
You bring up some interesting questions, Rachel. I'm writing about Blake's match today -- he really needed an assertive performance in the first round here after falling out of the bracket in Miami and the French, and he got one. Blake will be the first to tell you that he plays a high-risk game that tends to be ON or OFF and thus makes for streaks both good and bad. He figured out how to play his way into the top 10 -- now he's figuring out how to stay there.
If US can win on Clay... (San Jose, CA)
Does Federer really need a coach for the remainder of his career?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:27 PM)
I'd love to hear other people's takes on this. Tennis is a game for problem-solvers. Some players feel more comfortable trying to work through problems themselves -- others are very dependent on feedback. Federer has run his career differently than a lot of top players and this is no exception. My friend and colleague Peter Bodo recently wrote that Federer really hasn't had a coach for a while given his apparently distant relationship with Tony Roche in recent months. My guess is that he won't take on a coach just to have someone sitting in his box. He'll take someone on only IF he thinks it'll be productive and help him solve whatever problems (certainly fewer than the rest of the field) he needs to address at the moment.

Do you think Henman can make another run? Was that Henman-Moya match one of the best in some time?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:32 PM)
Hey Mike -- we're neighbors in the Philly area. Henman-Moya was not only a memorable match in and of itself, it means we've already had a more memorable match here on the second day than we did during the entire French Open. Henman had to deal with Spain's Feliciano Lopez next. He's a lefty with a wicked hard serve and made the quarters here in '05, so it's no cakewalk.
Tim Komsa Tranquility, New Jersey
When I first saw the two halves of the men's draw this year, I felt one side was much more stacked with great Grass court players(I am of course talking about the top half:Federer, Roddick, Murray(if he decided to play), Mahut, Blake and Safin). Now, I tend to root against Nadal and love seeing him lose to guys with big serves(which seems to be the only type he losses to, less Federer, of course). So my question to you is, Who do you think stands the best chance of taking out Nadal before the finals? Is Djokovic's serve big enough(I haven't really seen him play much)? Ivo?(who would of course have to make his way through Djokovic first, not an easy task) Maybe even Youzhny early on? Or do you just think he can breeze past this subpar half?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:41 PM)
If Nadal-Djokovic materializes, it'll be one of the more fascinating matchups this season, in the highest-pressure test tube there is. It would be a test of Nadal's comfort level on grass - i.e., was last year a fluke or does he retain confidence and touch? -- versus the new, much higher expectations Djokovic has of himself, not to mention what the tennis world expects of him now. Djokovic has such a balanced game and some of Nadal's magic is neutralized on this surface. Both are coming into this tournament having played A LOT of matches this season. I'd love to see it happen and yes, I do think Djokovic has the best shot at him. That being said, Karlovic is a big, big obstacle in every way. He's just lost a second-set tiebreak to Fabrice Santoro after winning the first set.
Lloyd (Meadville, PA)
Moya-Henman was a dramatic, well-played 1st round match. I was interested in how they worked around being "tight" at the end, my biggest problem. Do you think Moya's last double was more physical (high risk) or mental (choke)?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:46 PM)
Lloyd, I'm going to get you Moya's quote straight from his press conference -- hold on.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:46 PM)
"Second serve here, you take more risk than when I play on clay. On clay you just kick it and high bounce, you know, no risk at all. Here you try to push it a little bit harder. He was putting a lot of pressure on my second serve. I tried to go for it. Sometimes that happen."
AROD (NY)
Please stop calling Roddick "A-Rod," That's my name... that is all.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:47 PM)
Arod, please don't sue. I call him "Andy."
Tony (Chicago, Il)
Marin Cilic is the youngest player in the top 100, what are his chances in getting into the second week?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:56 PM)
Cilic (a wild card here) is holding his own right now against Gilles Simon . He's made a very smooth transition from the juniors (he was a world No. 1) over the last season and a half or so. If his performance at Queens is any indication, he should not be underestimated. He beat Henman, Falla of Colombia and Tsonga of France there.
Maurico (NY,NY)
Any chance Safin takes out Roger in the 3rd round? Safin (if he gets there) always plays Roger tough.
Bonnie DeSimone (2:03 PM)
One person who would like to see that result would be James Blake, who has Federer in the way of trying to advance past a Slam quarter for the first time. Safin has beaten Federer once since 2002 (semis of 05 Aussie) but they haven't played since 05 Halle, which interestingly is their only career meeting on grass. You'd have to give Federer more than an edge in this one but Safin will lift his game for the occasion.
Bonnie DeSimone (2:04 PM)
Folks -- I hate to leave you but time's up. All those who didn't get their questions answered -- our apologies -- we were very popular today. See you all Wednesday.
Wimbledon Moderator (2:34 PM)
John, Virginia
If Pete Sampras decided to try one more Wimbledon, aside from Federer, who has the tools to beat him? Sampras' serve would cancel out Roddick's serve and I feel like Nadal would not be able to handle Sampras' grass abilities.
Todd Martin (4:04 PM)
John: He would struggle with lots of guys. However, with the weapon he has in his serve (which is still as big as ever) he would be a tough competitor for most of the very best players.
John, Virginia
What does Justine Henin have to do to win Wimbledon? Her first time she was against Venus Williams in her prime, but I feel she could have won last year against Mauresmo. What part of her game is the most crucial that she needs to make sure she keeps focusing on?
Todd Martin (4:07 PM)
John: Henin is a great player and grass is not as distinct of a surface as it once was. She is very comfortable at net and I think that is a great weapon for her on the grass. If she served a bit bigger she might be able to withstand the bigger hitters on this surface.
Ryan (Anchorage, AK)
It says here that Fish upends Nadal in 5. You heard it here first!
Todd Martin (4:07 PM)
Ryan: Nadal won 6-3, 7-6, 6-3
Martin (Pal Park, NJ)
Has the surface and balls at Wimbledon changed so much that serve and volley play is dead? Also, how would a prime Pete Sampras do against Federer today? I think Sampras would overwhelm him with his pure offensive power and attacking game, despite the mighty Fed's all around game.
Todd Martin (4:12 PM)
Martin: The surface maybe has changed a bit, the balls have gotten a bit heavier, but the strings are the biggest change on grass. Topspin is much more common now with polyester strings. Topspin doesn't penetrate as much but it also makes for much greater margins of error (easier to hit passing shots).
Phillip (Brownsburg, IN)
Todd, loved watching you play. Do you ever see an American tennis player adored like Agassi or Sampras again. I would say right now is an awful time for American tennis, which is very sad.
Todd Martin (4:13 PM)
Phillip: We are only a few years removed from Agassi and Sampras (don't forget Courier and Chang). Times in the States are tough, but Andy and James both do a great job of carrying the torch.
Crazy Tennis
Seeing Venus Williams' match today, I thought, she needs to stop returning balls right back at her opponent. Do you agree with me or is there any sense in Venus' game plan?
Todd Martin (4:15 PM)
Crazy: I am a HUGE believer in using the middle of the court. I did not see Venus' match today, but balls down the middle are a great play, especially for someone who hits as forcefully as Venus.
MM (Boston)
only saw scores of blake's match today--how did he look, and how do you think he'll do rest of the draw (until roger of course)
Todd Martin (4:16 PM)
James looked great today. He had a bit of a hiccup at 4-1 serving in the 3rd set, but other than that he controlled play against a very good player in Andreev.
Tommy (Statesboro, Georgia)
While Roddick and Blake have advanced and the talk of American men's tennis is silenced for the time being, our state of tennis is really not great. Losses by Spadea, Fish, Fleishman, Kendrick, Querry, Delic and others have really cemented the fact that the United States Men's Tennis scene is a two-horse show. Who is going to rise up and become that third horse we are looking for?
Todd Martin (4:17 PM)
Tommy: First of all, Delic won today. But, in many ways, I do agree with you. In our country we can definitely set our sights higher than two in the top 10 and 3 or 4 in the top 50.
Sean Mac (Austin, TX)
Todd, I hear rumors that you love your music. You like Hoodoo Gurus and Mat Kearney, but not Pearl Jam. Any truth to this?
Todd Martin (4:19 PM)
Sean: Don't forget LIVE or Big Head Todd and the Monsters. Hope all is well down there buddy. See you soon.
michelle, new york
how far can rafa go this year? he looked impressive against Fish...
Todd Martin (4:20 PM)
Michelle: He can do very well. He was awfully strong today. That being said, there are those who can cause him troubles on the grass.
Bonang
What do you make of Youzhny's chances? I have him taking out Nadal in the round of 16.
Todd Martin (4:21 PM)
Bonang: Youzhny is one of those guys who matches up well with Rafael. Your pick is a gutsy one, but not a bad one.
Tarun (NYC)
who do you think is more dominant? Nadal on clay or Roger on Grass?
Todd Martin (4:24 PM)
Tarum: Which do I like more? Hot Dogs or Cheeseburgers?? Personally, it is a minute distinction, but Nadal on clay is probably a bit more dominant. It is the native surface of most of the top 100 players.
Jennifer from Cornwall, New York
Does Henman have a chance?
Todd Martin (4:25 PM)
Jennifer: Not sure if Henman matches up to well against Federer, but he will be tough for anyone who comes across him. I think there might be some magic in the air for him.
Cormac Ryan (Dallas, TX)
Everybody's talking about Federer and Roddick in one semi, which is hard to dispute. If Nadal loses before then, who might we see in the other men's semifinals?
Todd Martin (4:27 PM)
Cormac: I still like the way Lleyton Hewitt plays on the grass. But, without Nadal, there is lots that can happen on the bottom half.
Tracy (Atlanta)
What is the one thing you think Roddick needs to do in order to beat Federer? It is frustrating to see him have an awesome tournament only to lose badly to Federer in the final. It is like he forgets how to play when facing Federer.
Todd Martin (4:29 PM)
Tracy: The matchup for Andy is not great, but despite the bad loss in Melbourne this year I think that Andy is figuring out some things. I would be very interested in seeing him play Roger in 10 days.
anthony (allentown)
todd whatever happened to Tim Mayotte? Is he still involved in tennis? thanks
Todd Martin (4:30 PM)
Anthony: Tim is teaching tennis. He went to seminary and into ministry for some time.
Phillip (Brownsburg, IN)
Todd: Just a follow up from the last question: do you really feel that Roddick is that likeable? I do love James Blake, but I would like to see a player with Baghdatis' personality. He has a beautiful approach to the game.
Todd Martin (4:33 PM)
Phillip: I don't look at the guys as whether they are commercially or publicly likeable. I believe Andy has a huge following and if he continues to play better tennis his fan base will grow.
Todd Martin (4:34 PM)
Phillip: I also like Baghdatis' charisma, but I prefer our players to be great tennis players first.
Sain (SF)
Does the woman's game miss somebody like Kim Clijsters?
Todd Martin (4:36 PM)
Sain: Absolutely!! Kim was a great player and she IS a very good person. I always was a huge fan. She brought a lot to the tennis court - fight, athleticism, grace, and a smile.
Chris, NJ
Among your surprise picks, karlovic, stepanek and fish are already out. how deep can safin and nalbandian go?
Todd Martin (4:38 PM)
I was surprised Stepanek lost. Mardy had a rough draw. And, Santoro is a very crafty opponent (no surprise with Karlovic today). Safin might shock some people in the third round. He matches up well with Fed. And Nalbandian is a great player who can hang with anyone.
omid (zurich)
Todd, I am a big fan of Federer's and it seems as though in the last 6-9 months he is playing a bit more passive, as though he was playing not to lose rather than to win. Do you agree, and if so do you think all the pressure is getting to him?
Todd Martin (4:41 PM)
Omid: I don't agree with you. I wish Roger would play more aggressively. He has never played as aggressively (in coming to the net) as I think he should, but it is hard to argue with his results. WOW!!!!!!!!!!
Jack (Boston)
James Blake looked very impressive in his first match winning in straight sets. How far do you think he can go?
Todd Martin (4:43 PM)
Jack: James proved last year he is a capable grass courter by making the final of Queens Club. I think 4th round is a legitimate result for him.
Mike (St. Louis)
Why has nobody mentioned Davydenko yet? I feel like he has the game and, maybe more importantly, the swagger it takes to beat a force like Roger.
Todd Martin (4:44 PM)
Mike: Davydenko is a great player, but grass is not a surface many expect him to do well on. That is not to say that he won't. Just don't hold your breath for him.
Nathan (Savannah,GA)
TM,Do you think it is possible federer wins 8 straight wimbledons? Also,I applaud your interest to keep playing on the seniors tour. If, by any chance you need a new hip, or knee, just think of Ted... and head up I-95
Todd Martin (4:46 PM)
Nathan: Ted??? 8 straight is a stretch. Let's get to 5 first.
Bob (paris)
Todd, Federer mentioned after the French final that Nadal is the 'only' guy he needs to gameplan for. Do you think that might be a reason why his level of play seems to drop against Nadal, meaning he thinks too much against Nadal instead of letting his instincts take over. Another question, does it frustrate you as much as me to see guys at wimbledon sit back on short balls instead of coming to the net? thanks Todd.
Todd Martin (4:48 PM)
Bob: Federer doesn't overthink in my opinion. It is more a commentary on how talented and in control of his game he is. The staying back frustrates me when it is a bad decision, but often times it is too easy to hit passing shots to come in as frequently as in decades past.
Mike (St. Louis)
I meant Djokovic, not Davydenko
Todd Martin (4:50 PM)
Mike: Djokovic is outstanding and he loves the fight. He might be a bit inexperienced on the grass to be a huge threat.
Dan (Basel)
Todd, after watching Ljubicic move into the top ten over a year ago i thought he had the big game to beat the likes of Fed and Nadal on occasion but he is losing quite often these days, what's up with him?
Todd Martin (4:51 PM)
Dan: Ljubicic doesn't play as big as he might (except for the serve). One thing has changed and that is his equipment. He stopped using a racket that he was very successful with.
Daniel McAbee (Kings Mountain, North Carolina)
Do you think Andy Roddick will go far this year?
Todd Martin (4:52 PM)
Daniel: I do think Roddick will progress well into the tourney. He has the game and he is playing well in the crunch on grass.
Zachary Benziger (New Jersey)
Todd, are you a fan of Hawk-Eye? Personaly, I think it ruins the game and I wonder if it is 100% accurate. Your thoughts?
Todd Martin (4:54 PM)
Zachary: I love the concept. I, too, am not sure how accurate it is, but it is good enough to use, that is for sure. What I cannot stand is how many challenges the players are allowed. There is no fear for them to use a challenge.
Cire (Los Angeles)
Hi Todd, do you think the days where baseliners could win Wimbledon playing off the ground (ie, Hewitt, Agassi) were just a blip on the radar, or is this the evolution of the new grass game, where Federer's dominance is just a protrated trajectory of that blip?
Todd Martin (4:59 PM)
Cire: Federer plays a ton from the baseline. There will be more players in the future that are more complete (come to the net with capability), and some that might even make coming to the net a priority.
Todd Martin (5:00 PM)
Alright guys. Have a good one. Tomorrow afternoon same time, same url, 4EDT.
Wimbledon Moderator (5:24 PM)

Greg Garber (1:00 PM)
Greeting, folks. Greg Garber loggin on as the rain falls (again) at Wimbledon. At 6 PM local time, the forecast suggests thatwe may be done for the day. Fire away...
Matt (NYC)
Do you really think it is possible for Pete Sampras to come back? I herd some talk about that and I couldn?t believe it.
Greg Garber (1:01 PM)
Matt: After taking a long time to consider his retirement, I think Sampras is done with the ATP. The Senior Tour is a way to keep in touch with the game -- and not secondarily -- to win some matches again.
VICTOR LA.
justine henne SHOULD Win wimbledon.what do you guys think?
Greg Garber (1:04 PM)
Victor: You're right she SHOULD win it, but in six previous tournaments here she has been unable to do it. Last year, she had the famously fragile Amelie Mauresmo down a set in the final -- and lost. Here, someone always steps up. Henin is the top seed, but you can't help but think that Serena or Venus -- or Mauresmo -- will find a way to stop her from winning the only Slam that has eluded her.
Scott (Portland, Oregon)
I've gotta say that Tennis right now is at an all-time low!! It is just so unbelievably predictable!! As an avid Roddick fan, I suppose I'll enjoy his trip to the semi's....only to get ripped against Fed. Let's face it, unfortunately it will take a miracle for Andy to beat Roger (sorry A-Rod!) When will this lopsided dominance end?
Greg Garber (1:06 PM)
Scott: After watching Federer play Del Potro today, I'm not sure it will EVER happen for Andy Roddick. Federer has ridiculous skills (see story coming later) and every time he gets in a tight spot he raises his game. Roddick's serve looks good, but Del Potro hits the ball well and after a few games Federer dialed in and started nailing it.
Andrew, Louisiana
Why isn't anyone giving Marat Safin a chance? He reminds me of crazy Goran Ivanisevic. If 'Good' Marat shows up in that potential matchup with Federer, I see all the possibility for an upset. He is 6'4, moderately mobile, and has a pretty decent record over the years.
Greg Garber (1:10 PM)
Andrew: He IS the true wildcard here. He's won of only eight guys in the field to have won a Grand Slam (two, actually) but I think those days are over. His knee gives him a ot of trouble and his head is, well, he has a tendency to melt down in big matches. He lost to Roddick in the third round at Austraia and Tipsarevic in th second round of the French. The Pakistani qualifier, Qureshi, could give him a go if the rain stops.
Justin (Silver Spring, MD)
Do you think today's top 10 tennis players are as good as the top ten in the 1990's? In terms of comparing Pete Sampras and Roger Federer, it seems that Sampras may have had much tougher opposition during the course of his career, with players such as Edberg, Becker, Agassi etc etc.
Greg Garber (1:13 PM)
Good question, Justin. You're always going to get that nostalgic "things were better back in the day" from the older folks. Roddick was just talking about it in his press conference. While those players you mentoned were terrific players, but who is to say that Nadal won;t win more Slams than any of them?
Flippy (Greenville, NC)
What would Tim Henman have to do to win Wimbledon this year?
Greg Garber (1:13 PM)
Flippy: Liquidate the rest of the men's field.
Shan (Chicago)
Do you know why courts at wimbledon are slow compared to one's 10 years back.
Greg Garber (1:15 PM)
Shan: There has never been a definitive investigative report, but after the matches -- on the men's side, in particular -- became serve-fests in the late 1990s, the players will tell you that the All England Club slowed the game down. By watering the courts more and leaving the grass a tad higher and slightly increasing the size of the balls, folks say, the ball moves more slowly and allows longer and more pleasing rallies.
Fred: Los Angeles, CA
Who is/was more fun to hang out with...Sampras or Agassi? Any stories to tell?
Greg Garber (1:20 PM)
Agassi. Here's a funny story. This happened years ago in Washington DC when Brad Gilbert was his coach. I was working for the Hartford Courant and doing a survey of ATP players on a variety of things: best backhand, worst serve, etc. One of the questions was which woman's player do you admire. He instantly said Steffi Graf and -- amid a few beers -- made some, uh, complimentary remarks. The funny thing? He was married to Brooke Shields at the time.
Evan (Chicago, IL)
Any chance of American Delic doing anything against Djokovic?
Greg Garber (1:23 PM)
Evan: There's ALWAYS hope. In this case, though, I think Delic has little chance against the player who should finish the season as the No. 3-ranked player...
Shan(Chicago)
Also do you think Nadal is better on grass now than last year based on what you have seen so far.
Greg Garber (1:25 PM)
Shan: See yesterday's story. Nadal is MUCH better on grass than he was. At 21, he's going to get better, too.
Michael (Marietta, GA)
Any Chance of a sweep in Doubles for the Americans. And could we get another Williams Sisters double (winning doubles and one winning singles). Thanks
Greg Garber (1:27 PM)
Michael: The Bryans are favorites on the men's side and Venus and Serena have won six Grand Slam doubles titles -- plus an Olympic gold medal -- but my sense is that they'll be a little rusty. And, if they keep going in singles, they might have to withdraw (as Jonas Bjorkman did in mixed at the French) to save their strength.
Craig (Pasadena, CA)
Why do they always play the major tournaments during the rainy season? What is the chance of seeing any more tennis today?
Greg Garber (1:29 PM)
Craig: The early-line forecast was for showers around 4 pm local time -- and rain th rest of the day. Although there are some encouraging brights spots ut there, I'm guessing that's what we're looking at. really, it's all part of the All England Club plan to give Tim Henman (currently tied with Feliciano Lopez at 1-all) another day of rest after his marathon match with Moya.
MAURICE THOMAS (ST.LOUIS,MO)
DO YOU THINK VENUS WILLIAMS WILL WIN ANOTHER TITLE AT WIMBLEDON
Greg Garber (1:31 PM)
Maurice: Truly, I think she has it in her. She blew in here in 2005 and shocked some eople by winning. You can never count her out.
Greg Garber (1:32 PM)
Folks: Thanks for sending your questions along. Bonnie is up next...
Bonnie DeSimone (1:33 PM)
Top of the afternoon to you all. The sun has just broken through the cloud cover here and we're hoping for more action.
Ryan, TN
Im so happy Hingis moved on and looked great today. Shes my favorite player. What did you think? Is this the comeback Wimbledon for her and if not how many more years do you feel will she be a contender?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:39 PM)
I think she is a long shot here largely because of her hip/back problems. Hingis' comeback in general has been characterized by very consistent play until she goes up against top-10 players... even though she has been among them since the middle of last year.
Jason (Montreal, Canada)
What do you think are Jelena Jankovic's chances here? She's advancing easily right now, how will she fare against tougher opponents? Is there still a question mark regarding her mental game?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:43 PM)
Jankovic appears to be a completely different player psyche-wise than she was when she picked up that rap.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:44 PM)
She made the 4th round here last year and with her favorable draw I see her as at least a quarterfinalist. Then she gets either Serena or Justine, presumably, and things will get interesting.
Andrew Birmingham Alabama
Why are most of the women hitting hard slices as second serves rather than a true kick serve?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:46 PM)
Andrew, Greg and I agree that it's an effective weapon that's made more feasibe because of today's string technology... but not gender-specific, some of the guys are doing it too.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:47 PM)
Sorry, that should be FEASIBLE
Dougie Fresh (DC)
Do you see Roddick's tutoring from Jimmy C. as the needed mental toughness and focus that he will consistently need to beat Federer in a major? How did Andy look today?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:52 PM)
DF: I think Andy has responded to Connors' belief in his game as well as technical tutoring. It's powerfully motivating to have a champion of that caliber take enough of an interest in you to come back to an active role in the sport. Having said all that, I think Andy has plenty of mental toughness. You only have to look at last season and his path back to the U.S. Open final to confirm that. Diversifying his game has been the issue.
Sam (Arlington, Va)
Gasquet took care of Mahut pretty easily today. What do you guys think of him making the semis?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:54 PM)
Good question, Sam. We were a little surprised at the ease of that win, as Mahut had looked so dangerous in getting to the Queens Club final against Roddick.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:57 PM)
However... Mahut had to qualify here, so he's played a lot more back to back matches than he has most of the season. And Gasquet did blitz him in straight sets in the first round of the French. He should get Roddick in the quarters and I don't see Gasquet winning that one.
patrick
For Tu to pull off a major shocker against Ivanovic tomorrow, what does she needs to do besides pray for an off game from Ana?
Bonnie DeSimone (2:01 PM)
It would be the win of Meilen's career, that's for sure.
Bonnie DeSimone (2:02 PM)
She was stung by not being named to the U.S. Fed Cup team today, but captain Zina Garrison elected to keep the team that won the last round together, and it is a pretty good one. The Williams sisters, world No. 1 doubles player Lisa Raymond and Vania King.
Bonnie DeSimone (2:03 PM)
Our time's up, folks. Thanks again for playing hookey... I mean, thanks again for spending some of your day with us. Tune in again tomorrow, same time, same URL.
Wimbledon Moderator (2:13 PM)
Thanks Bonnie and Greg! Everyone stop back at 4 p.m. ET when Todd Martin will stop by to chat!
Todd Martin (4:00 PM)
Well. Wimbledon continues to be Wimbledon. Lots of rain and not much tennis today.
Eugene (Oklahoma)
Hi Todd. You mentioned above that strings have made a big difference in today's game. I know Agassi use to use a Aramid (use to be called Kevlar) strings. Are any players at Wimbledon using Aramid type strings that you know of?
Todd Martin (4:01 PM)
Eugene: Nobody that I know of still uses Pro-blend or Kevlar hibrid. The strings that Agassi finished his career with and that most players use now is polyester based.
Sam (Arlington, Va)
Tood - give us some young players who you think can do damage in the coming years. Players other than Djoko, Murray, and Gasquet....
Todd Martin (4:02 PM)
Sam: Del Potro, the guy Federer is playing right now is going to be a very good player. I also think that Sam Querrey has a promising future.
Steve (Tahiti) french polynesia
Hi Todd, when are you coming in tahiti for an exhibition?
Todd Martin (4:03 PM)
Soon, hopefully. Would love to visit.
Mo (Washington, DC)
Who do you think is the men's player with the greatest mental toughness? Do the best players use their last error as motivation or try to forget that error occured?
Todd Martin (4:05 PM)
Not surprisingly, Federer and Nadal are the two best. I think that a player should focus first on rectifying errors, but do their best to erase past errors from memory.
Matt in Atlanta, GA
Todd,How do you feel american men are shaping up as a future force on the tour over the last few years. I think Pete and Andre having retired really closed a huge chapter and I don't find the same inspired play in roddick. Will the US be as strong as we were in the 90's? Last Davis cup win was with you, Courier and Pete in 95 I believe. Lets go USA
Todd Martin (4:08 PM)
Matt: I think the Americans are going to get stronger. You just can't expect a repeat of the '90s. Sampras, Agassi, Courier, and Chang is probably never going to be matched.
Ray -Yankee in California
Todd was I seeing things or did james blakes Backhand look better than ive ever seen it.
Todd Martin (4:10 PM)
Ray: James' backhand has gotten much better over the last couple years. It has become a weapon at times.
Sveta, Cleveland
in all honesty ... w/o federer, roddick would have mulitple titles, do u think roddick will win any more grand slams
Todd Martin (4:13 PM)
Sveta: I believe you are right that he would have more than one Major title. I absolutely believe Andy is going to win more.
Frustrated Roddick Fan (USA)
What in the world has happened to Andy Roddick fearsome forehand?? It used to be one of the best in the business but lately he's gotten all wimpy with it and moonballs a lot. His groundstrokes look weak. What's up with that? I thought Jimmy was supposed to help Roddick, not make it worse? I want to see the power forehand back!
Todd Martin (4:15 PM)
Frustrated: Jimmy has helped Andy a lot. A big part of that was to get Andy to fire away with the forehand again. I have not seen him play too much the last couple matches, but expect him to let it go more as the week goes by.
B. A. Becker
A comment was made that it was strange that Jimmy Conner's serve return and backhand expertise v/s Andy Ruddick's serve and forehand was an odd match.Isn't it a wise move to hire a coach with complimentary skills?
Todd Martin (4:18 PM)
B.A.: Personally, Jose Higueras helped me as a player a ton. Jose played primarily counter-punching tennis and I attacked incessantly. He helped me understand what the other style player was feeling when I played them. Similarly, I think Jimmy is knowledgeable, period. Similar game styles or weaponry is way over rated.
omid (zurich)
Hey Todd, If Fed somehow doesn't win Wimbledon and/or struggles during the hardcourt season do you see him picking up a coach? If so who are possible candidates and who do you could help him improve if thats possible?
Todd Martin (4:20 PM)
Omid: There is no reason for Roger to rush into another coaching relationship. He is very capable of managing his own game and career. I do think that before long, regardless of results, he will hire another coach (maybe Darren Cahill).
Michael (Marietta, GA)
Can any US player not named Andy or Blake and Williams on the woman's side advance into the fourth round or higher. Last time I checked, there were only like 2 or 3 other Americans left. Thanks for the chat
Todd Martin (4:23 PM)
Michael: Amer Delic plays Djokovic tomorrow. He has a huge game and if he uses it well he has a good chance against Djokovic. I don't see anyone else on the women's side to make too big a dent.
John, Virginia
Other sports (i.e. Golf) have the women trying to play the PGA Men's Tour. With the exception of the best of 5 sets, do you think the women's top players, such as Henin, Serena, and Sharapova, etc. could be decent on the men's tour???
Todd Martin (4:25 PM)
John: Without exception, the best women would not be able to play on the ATP. They are great tennis players, but they would not be competitive.
Mike Philly, Pa
Based on your own experience, do you think it is wise for young American junior players to follow the collegiate route or go straight into the pros, granted they are good enough to play on the ATP.
Todd Martin (4:29 PM)
Mike: There are several more young players who have failed turning pro right out of high school than have made an impact on the world game. WAY TOO MANY kids are turning pro too early. Some should, but most everyone should look to college to climb the rungs of the ladder one by one.
frustrated roddick fan (also a fish fan)
Todd, thanks for answering my question about Andy's forehand. Back to your guy, Mardy Fish--even though he lost to Nadal I think Mardy looked stronger in this match than he has in a while. What's the one thing you think Mardy needs to work on most? Do you think Mardy will finally get his groove going during the US summer hardcourt season? I sure hope he can!
Todd Martin (4:31 PM)
Frustrated: Mardy played well yesterday, but his attitude let him down. Against the best, there is no room for wavering in mind, body, or spirit. Mardy's body was there yesterday, but his mind and heart came and went.
Joe (Alhambra, CA)
hi, todd! after watching federer played today on court 1 at wimbledon, i could see that he was a bit off of his A-game as he had already made more unforced errors during the span of two sets and a half today than he did in the previous round (13). i am thinking if marat safin plays him in round 3 and if he plays like he did today, he would probably be outplayed by safin and his streak at wimby will come to an end. i would like to see your thoughts on that. thanks!
Todd Martin (4:34 PM)
Joe: Unforced errors is a terrible stat. Many are what I believe to be FORCED errors. Roger is fine. However, I believe that Safin has a chance against him regardless of Roger's form.
John,Virginia
What is the secret to staying healthy and without injuries? How did Sampras dominate so well and Federer does not seem to get injured very much either? What is their secret?
Todd Martin (4:35 PM)
John: They are both extremely professional. Their decision making is sound. They don't overplay and they understand their bodies very well.
Andrew (Ann Arbour)
Good Evening Todd, I wanted to know why is it that some guys are so much tougher than others mentally. For instance, Nadal and Connors (in his day) always believed they are going to win no matter the situation. Where does that come from?
Todd Martin (4:37 PM)
Andrew: Some might say desire is the ticket. All these guys have desire, but the best mentally have a commitment to the process and embrace the competition, even when it doesn't go their way.
Todd Martin (4:37 PM)
chris (boston, ma)
If Henman is able to make a bit of run, which I hope he does, in what round do you think we will start to hear comparisons being made to that fine film "Wimbledon"?
Todd Martin (4:38 PM)
Chris: I hope never!! That movie was dodgy to say the least.
Kiran (Chicago)
Is there any talk about having a longer grasscourt season. what are your thoughts on it.
Todd Martin (4:41 PM)
Kiran: It is impractical. There might be one week to gain, but both the French Open and Wimbledon are too stubborn to move dates.
John, Virginia
Who is someone on Men and Women's side who is retired you would like to see make a comeback? Also, if Jennifer Capriati ever comes back will she be able to be as competitive as she once was???
Todd Martin (4:43 PM)
John: I wouldn't want tennis to turn into boxing. When someone hangs it up I would prefer that player's rackets stay hung. Jennifer will struggle if and when she comes back. Both due to the injury recovery and the competitive time lost.
MIguel Seabra, Lisbon, Portugal
Hey, Todd -- I was the press officer at the Estoril Open when you were a finalist there in 1999 -- and your neighbour in the street you are staying in here in Wimbledon.I'd like to know if you still stand by what you said then in POrtugal -- that clay is your favourite surface. And another question: if your life was on the line on a tennis match on any surface, who would you want to play it for you -- Rafa or Roger?
Todd Martin (4:45 PM)
Miguel: Hello neighbor. Clay will always be my favorite. It is also the greatest challenge for me, but as my wife gets sick of hearing, I love challenges. If forced to decide I would make a surface request first and decide the player playing for my life second. They are both amazing. Federer is obviously the best, especially against anyone other than Nadal.
Amaresh (Milpitas, CA)
Do you think that if Henman goes deep into the tournament, it's good for him as well as grass court tennis. He's among very few natural serve and volley players left on the tennis ciruit.
Todd Martin (4:46 PM)
Yes. It is always good to see those players with more variety or a unique game style succeed.
Rich, Columbus, OH
Hi Todd,For an a competiting rec player, what are the keys to becoming a good serve and volleyer? Also, what are the keys to beating one?
Todd Martin (4:49 PM)
Rich: Balance in moving to the net is very important. Plan the point before hand (ie serve to the forehand then volley to the backhand). Also, volley with the flow. If the ball takes you in one direction, volley in that direction as well.
Miguel Seabra, Lisbon, Portugal
Another question, Todd -- it's obvious Mardy has a problem with his forehand and Nadal was exploiting it; it's become a bit better, but which are the steps you are taking in order to get it better? Some technical tips, please!
Todd Martin (4:52 PM)
Miguel: My belief is that most of the issues there are management and confidence. Technically, he needs to do a better job of committing his wait through the shot. He falls off the ball backwards on many forehands.
Mel (Dayton, OH)
If you were Blake at Wimbledon, (considering his unique skill set), what would your strategy be to keep winning, especially since Federer looms in the quarters?
Todd Martin (4:53 PM)
Mel: Trust his athletic strengths. Keep the first serve percentage high and sneak to the net often.
omid (zurich)
Hey Todd, what is MaliVai Washington up to these days. He is a class act.
Todd Martin (4:55 PM)
Omid: He doesn't live more than 15 minutes from me in Florida. He is doing much work with his charity and he does some work in local Real Estate. Father of two and happy as a clam.
Tyler (Nebraska)
Who should be the first pick in the 2007 NBA draft
Todd Martin (4:55 PM)
Tyler: Now we are talking. I think Oden should go first. However, I love Durant's game.
Sain (Sf)
Who is the best volleyer in the women's game?
Todd Martin (4:58 PM)
Sain: Amelie Mauresmo is probably the best. Henin volleys well when necessary and both Venus and Serena come forward well, they aren't the best volleyers but they are very effective when imposing themselves.
Chad (St. Gallen)
Todd, who are your favorite current players to watch as a fan and who were your idols growning up?
Todd Martin (5:00 PM)
Chad: I really enjoy watching Fed and Nadal, but others are Santoro, Nalbandian, Youzhny, and Djokovic.
Todd Martin (5:01 PM)
Gotta run. Thanks for the chat again. Enjoy hearing your thoughts and questions. Hopefully, there will be more matches played tomorrow. Good night.
Wimbledon Moderator (5:08 PM)
That wraps up our chats for our Wednesday coverage at Wimbledon. Check back Thursday at 1 ET when Greg Garber and Bonnie DeSimone will be back. Todd Martin will join us next on Friday at 2 ET!
Jeff (Corpus Christi, Tx)
Do you think Roger would have won Wimbledon four straight times if he had played during Pete's prime years at Wimbledon? If you had to choose between Pete or Roger in their prime, who would it be? Thank you.
Greg Garber (1:06 PM)
Jeff: Clasic sportsbar question, and a good one. This is something people might be talking about 50 years from now. My sense is that Federer, technically, is a better player but that Sampras was perhaps even more of a competitor. I think they'd split at 2-all.
Lance, Oregon
How far do u think Venus will go at Wimbledon? And how many more majors do you think that she can win?
Greg Garber (1:08 PM)
Lance: This is the $64 million dollar question. Venus loves it here (see story soon to be posted). She's 45-7 at Wimbledon and is a three-time champion. No one thought she'd come back to win the title in 2005 and no one is counting her out this year. There is a peace about the Williams sisters that shuld make the rest of the field nervous. They played doubles today and seem quite happy and healthy. THAT is a dangerous combination.
Brandon (Junction City, Ohio)
Is Andy Roddick going to blow it like he does every other year?
Greg Garber (1:12 PM)
Brandon: That's a tad harsh, son. Losing three matches to Roger Federer isn't exactly blowing it. Only one of those matches was within his reach, the championship final in 2004.
rich watchung nj
early rounds in womans tennis is like watching the grass grow and yet the PC police give us nothing but serena and venus bring on the big boys
Greg Garber (1:14 PM)
Rich: This is a common complaint. And a correct one. The early women's matches ARE often boring. Katie O'Brien, the last British woman in the draw, got smoked by Michaella Krajicek 6-0, 6-1. Venus and Sharapova won easily and Mauresmo is already rolling. At the same time, Amer Delic actually gave Djokovic a scare.
Curt (Yuba City, CA)
Why is it that Justine Henin gets so little time on TV when she's No. 1 in the world? Instead, we get some match in its entirety as much as three times. I know most on TV are Americans, but three times during rain delays? And being American is not an excuse when we get to watch early rounds of Federer. The most we get is match points until the semis. Have any actual surveys been done to prove that no one would watch?
Greg Garber (1:19 PM)
Curt: You sound like a candidate for the programming department. One of the upsdies of the American fallout at the French Open was seeing lots of emerging players -- Serbians Ivanovic, Jankovic, Djokovic, for example. Henin has always been viewed as a little snarky, but like Mauresmo she plays a beautiful game. They'll put her on TV when she reaches the quarterfinals -- against Serena Williams!
Jonathan, Charleston WV
Why are Roddick and Fed once again looking to meet in the semis. Why can't Nadal and roddick mix it up? Much more interesting, yes? Why did Wimbledon do thisand can one hope the USTA will be smarter?
Greg Garber (1:23 PM)
Jonathan: It's all the luck of the draw. It's automatic that No. 1 Federer is in the top half of the draw and No. 2 Nadal is in the bottom. Roddick actually has a decent draw; Richard Gasquet might be there in the quarters. Federer has a terrible draw. Next up is Safin -- anythng could happen there -- Blake could await in the quarters. Roddick can't whine -- he's going to have to face Federer eventually if he is to be the champion...
Will (Arlington MA)
How bummed out are the English fans now that Henman has been eliminated?
Greg Garber (1:26 PM)
Will: Pretty bummed, but as Tim Henman said, they're used to it. James Blake, whose mom Betty was born in England, had a great line: "I guss I'm the closest thing to a Brit left in the tournament, so hopefully I'll have a few fans.
Greg Garber (1:29 PM)
Will: Does your boss know about this? Seriously, Davydenko is NOT a grass player. His game rocks on clay but at Wimbledon he was 1-5 coming into the tournament. Guccione is a much better player than his ranking suggests
chris georgia
in Serena completely healthy?
Greg Garber (1:32 PM)
No tennis player is completely healthy. They ALL have aches and pains, especially at a tournament that requires seven matches to win. Serena said she was slowed a bit by a tight hamstring in the first round but felt better after the second. The real answer, I think, is that she didn't pull out of doubles. If she thought the extra play would compromise her chances in singles, I'm sure she would have bailed. I'd say she's healthy enough.
Dan, Indianapolis, IN
Is there an underdog at Wimbeldon, that may surprise many people?
Greg Garber (1:35 PM)
Not to win. I think there are eight players who can win here, a very small universe. Certainly, some have the capacity to surprise. Janko Tipsarevic is one. How about 36-year-old Wayne Arthurs is 36 years old and he's in to the third round -- against Jonas Bjrokman (35).
Dan, Indy
Who was the most powerful looking player on the mens side today?
Greg Garber (1:38 PM)
Dan: You cn start with Nadal, who is 6-foot-2, 190 and change. Fernando Gonzalez 6-0, 180 could play some football, too. For my money, it's Jim Thomas, the Amercian doubles specialist. He's 6-4, 200 -- a power forward, for sure.
Alex Ballentine (OH)
Maria Sharapova is hott.
Greg Garber (1:38 PM)
Alex: As we say at ESPN, this just in...
CJ, Long Beach, CA
Is there a chance that Venus will show us her grass court form that has compelled us to watch in the past? Will she ever have that burning desire to win again? I just don't see it anymore!
Greg Garber (1:41 PM)
CJ: You're on the money. She has the talent and I think the desire, but critics say she dosn;t work hard enough when she's not playing. In her press conference today there were NO questions about her match. She taked at length about her fashion design firm. The hope is that as she gets closer to the end of her career, she'll put the hammer down and work as hard as possible to secure a few more Grand Slam titles.
TJ Philadelphia, PA
Greg, What ever happened to Brian Baker? He showed a lot of promise as a junior and young pro, then disappeared.
Greg Garber (1:44 PM)
TJ: A hip injury, if I'm not mistaken. All it takes is one debilitating injury. take Jo Willie Tsonga, who was a terrific French junior. Back and shoulder injuries took him out of action for several years, but -- voila! -- here he is in the third round.
steve ( from yellowstonie)
who are some prospects who coming up in wimbledon greg.
Greg Garber (1:50 PM)
Steve: I've got two for you. Juan-Martin Del Potro from Agentina lost to Roger Federer today, but he's a future top 10 player. How about Tamira Paszek from Austria on the women's side? She's only 16 and ranked No. 54 in the world.
Josh, WV
What can you tell me about Alicia Molik? Looks like she has a good game, but I don't know much about her
Greg Garber (1:51 PM)
Josh: She's a terrific grass player. Big serve, good groundstrokes. gets the grass/volley thing. gave Serena a hard time yesterday. An inner-ear disease set her back for a year and she's on her way back.
IPittman (SF, CA)
Swtiching to womens's doubles, do you think that the rest of field is shaking a little? Other than the Williams sisters, who are the other top 20 ranked women playing doubles?
Greg Garber (1:52 PM)
IPittman: Shaking is a bit strong. Certainly, they have the capacity to win. I was talking to the Bryan Brothers earlier today and they said it's a good thing for doubles that they're back. FYI, the Williams asked them to play mixed doubles, but they were already committed.
Mitch, Fort Lauderdale
Hi Greg,Has Nicole Vaidisova falled off the radar? It seems she has wilted away each time she has the chance to breakthrough.
Greg Garber (1:55 PM)
Mitch: I wouldn;t say she's fallen off the radar, just regressed a little. She's only 18 and she finished last year at No. 10. She reached the semifinals at the Australian Open and the quarters at the French. That's pretty strong.
jeremy (stowe, vt)
Jim Thomas, a power forward at 6-4, who are you Isiah Thomas?
Greg Garber (1:55 PM)
Dude, on a tennis court he could play center.
afj24 (DC Area)
What do think of James Blake chances to get to the finals this year?
Greg Garber (1:57 PM)
Tough draw. he's got Ferrero next but Federer looms in the quarterfinals. That would match his best Grand Slam effort -- he reached the QFs last year at the U.S. Open.
Jeff (Chicago, IL)
If Wimbledon is allowed to use past success/failure on grass in their seeding of players, how in the world did Davydenko get a 6 seed and Nalbandian a 23?
Greg Garber (1:59 PM)
Jeff: Ranking is the leading criterium when it comes to seeding. Past performance usually seems to affect the numbers only one to three slots.
zing low ching (china)
whoes better nadal or roddick
Greg Garber (2:00 PM)
zinger: To paraphrase John McEnroe, you cannot be serious. Nadal is four years younger and has two more Grand Slam titles. Case closed.
Kerri, Miami, FL
When will the Russian Fed Cup team be named?
Greg Garber (2:02 PM)
Kerry: You're all over it! Russia has until the first week in July to name their team and they'll take most of that time. Maria Sharapova hasn't decided yet and is questionable -- at best. No matter, Russia is loaded.Folks, it's been great chatting. Talk to you tomorrow.
Wimbledon Moderator (2:57 PM)
Todd Martin is unable to chat today but will be rejoining us Friday at 2 p.m. ET.
Todd Martin (4:03 PM)
Hi. Bit of a confusion here. I am ready to chat and interested in what you guys thought about the tennis today.
Sam Billings (Texarkansas, AR)
I've gotta say that Federer's dominance (and Nadal on clay) has probably hurt the game of men's Tennis more than it has helped. Men's Tennis is extremely predictable!!! Why watch when you already know who will win the Grand Slams?? You can almost take it a step further and accurately predict who will be in each Grand Slam final match. This dominance was fine for a short while but now the predictability makes for very BORING Tennis. The steadily falling television ratings year in and year out are evident. Unless you are a fan of Roger's, why watch? I can't believe I am saying this, but I'd rather watch the womens events. Oh, and go Roddick.....
Todd Martin (4:08 PM)
Sam: To an extent, I would agree that more parody is always better. However, there are always great matches leading up to finals, AND the matchup (rivalry some might say) of Fed and Nadal is awesome.
Todd Martin (4:14 PM)
Sorry guys for the mixup. I am going to sign off now. Chat with you Saturday.
Wimbledon Moderator (4:52 PM)
The next live chat will take place with Greg Garber and/or Bonnie DeSimone at 1 p.m. ET on Friday.
Greg Garber (1:01 PM)
joan
Come on Greg, admit it: everybody at ESPN is sniggering behind Federer's back with that ridiculous gay outfit he's wearing. Can that man's ego can any bigger and more obnoxious!????
Greg Garber (1:04 PM)
Joan: What, were you in the Green Room when the ESPN broadcasters were discuswsing Roger's man-bag? Here's what I think happened: Nike designed the cream-colored blazer last year with the three rackets on the pocket representing three titles at Wimbledon. Roger seemed reticent about it but, as the praise circulated, he seemed to like it more. This year's full Fred Perry ensemble IS a bit over the top. One of our lady analysts -- I can't reveal who -- joked that the next time we look, a chiuaua might poke his head out of that Louis Vitton-like bag!
Jacob (Mt. Pleasant, MI)
Tipserovic! First of all, sweet match, especially holding off a match point. Secondly, what kind of impact does this have on the draw?
Greg Garber (1:08 PM)
Jacob: Glad to see someone else appreciates the Stealth Serb. He was the only one who DIDN'T make the semifinals at Roland Garros. Now he's in the first round for the first time in a Grand Slam and -- get this -- after going 0-for-8 against players ranked in the top 10, beat No. 5 seed Fernando Gonzalez in five sets. After trialing 2-5 and facing a match point...
Greg Garber (1:09 PM)
Just a note: Laura Granville is serving for the first set at 5-4 against Martina Hingis.
AP (Boynton Beach,FL)
Greg what is the weather like there?
Greg Garber (1:10 PM)
AP: Not as nice as where you're at. We've had two rain delays already and I think I've busted out my sunglasses once in a week!
Nips (Algoma, WI)
Is Mark Philippoussis going to pick a Kitten or a Cougar?
Greg Garber (1:12 PM)
Nips: THAT is the question they're asking in the players' lounge. What's your call?
Mike(Atlanta)
Greg how many pounds have you put on from the strawberries and cream? Don't be shy either!
Greg Garber (1:13 PM)
Mike: I think you're obssessed with food. I have not had ONE bowl of strawberries and cream. But I have had about two dozen scones with jam and clotted cream. Including the French Open, I'm up a solid 10. Not good.
J Shaky
The dubs don't tend to get a lot of pub, but Mirny/Bjorkman going down is pretty huge, right?
Greg Garber (1:17 PM)
J Shaky: I'm working on a big story on doubles that we'll probably post on Sunday. With Venus and Serena playing together again, it's a good topic. Today, the WTA adapted the ATP format for the sport, which includes no-ad scoring and super tie-breaks instead of third sets. The changes knocked off 16 minutes from the average match and makes it more attractive to tournament directors and TV folks. After winning the first set 6-2, Bjorkman and Mirnyi lost three straight. No. 2 seeds -- gone.
J Shaky
What's up with Blake? Granted, Ferrero is a good player, and exactly the type of patient hitter that always gives Blake fits, but are the Americans really going to be down to just Andy AGAIN?
Greg Garber (1:22 PM)
J-Shakes: That is something everyone's talking about. He's never been past the third round here and it looks like that stat might stick. He's down two sets to one and on serve in the fourth against Ferrero. he was aying yesterday that he's learned how to marshall his confidence. Perhaps, but not here, not yet.
Jake (MI)
What's the match time at for Serena right now? I think it's shorter than the break I just took for lunch. Quite the blitzing.
Greg Garber (1:24 PM)
Jake: You are ON it! Serena decked Sequera in 43 minutes.
george(nyc)
what do you think of jelena jankovic winning it? her comeback is great for the sport.
Greg Garber (1:26 PM)
A terrific win. Her hair is pulled back so tight, I thought her head was going to explode in the third set. Safarova played her tough.
Mike(Atlanta)
Can Granville pull this off? I'd love to see her get through. Heaven knows she's paid her dues for a big win at Wimby.
Greg Garber (1:28 PM)
Mike:Of course she can. She's serving at 2-1 in the second. She looks incrediblyconfident on her groundstrokes. Hingis looks baffled.Incredibly, they've only played once previously.
Richard (Federer Fan Phenom Farter)
If Federer wins this tournament, you have to admit he is the ALL TIME BEST.
Greg Garber (1:29 PM)
Richard (i'LL LEAVE IT AT THAT): If Federer retired tomorrow, he's only have 10 Slams, four fewer than Pete. I think he needs to hit that number before we can officially say he's the best. Odds are, he'll win 16-18 Slam titles.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:32 PM)
Howdy folks. Bonnie DeSimone here, taking the reins from Greg... fire away.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:33 PM)
First, since we always appreciate love notes...
Alex Ballentine (OH)
Todd, Greg and Bonnie, on behalf of everyone participating in this chat, and tennis fans around the world, I just want to thank you. You guys do an excellent job relating to the fans and you always tend to put a smile on my face. You all are so kind and nice, not to mention humerous. Thank you for taking time out for your fans. You all have a special place in my heart. God bless you all. Sincerely, AB.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:34 PM)
Thank YOU, Alex. The first week of a Slam is always really hectic but we enjoy spending a few minutes with you.
adrian (toronto)
how's the atmosphere there after the bomb scare? are the players affected at all? and for the record, roger's ensemble is good. i'd buy what he's wearing.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:37 PM)
I'm sure Roger and Nike are happy to hear that, Adrian... I think the tournaments may have to institute an on-court luggage allowance myself. On to more serious subjects: we did notice our bags were serached more carefully at the security checks this morning.
Michael (Marietta, GA)
Back to the Granville question, what are her chances afer Hingis. Could the American woman be peaking for a chance to dominate. With the Williams sister playing well and with a third American stepping up her game, what are the chances the Americans start winning at least one slam a year?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:38 PM)
Several of you are asking about Laura Granville. I've been following her career since she was a high school kid in Chicago and I was working for the Chicago Tribune.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:39 PM)
Laura has had her struggles, but she LOVES the grass here. She's also working with a new coach part-time... Raj Chaudhuri... who has some real insight about what it takes to help a veteran player regain her confidence. I saw Laura'a match against Sybille Bammer and she looked super.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:41 PM)
But do remember Hingis is not playing at full strength.
Mike (St. Louis, MO)
Bonnie, are you willing to make an extremely bold statement and say Safin beats Federer today?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:42 PM)
No, I'm not.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:43 PM)
Mr. Blake just went down by the way... which negates the best headline in this morning's British papers... "Back me, my mom's a Brit, Blake pleads"
Bruce Lee ( doubs fan, Boston )
Bonnie, How tough is it really for these top players at Wimbledon to play doubles as well. It seems like if there is a surface to do it, it's Grass. Why not give the fans a little more to watch, since grass typically doesn't take as much of a toll on the body. Also maybe there is an argument to shorten matches at Grand Slams so that doubles can be played by more.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:45 PM)
Great question, Bruce. I know Greg is working on a dubs piece. You are right on about the surface -- quicker points, less time on court. The prestige of Wimbledon has something to do with it too. Over and over, you hear otherwise jaded-seeming players say how much they love and respect the tradition of this tournament.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:48 PM)
Granville is about to serve for the match. advancing to the 4th round here would equal her best performance here or in any Slam... she did it in 2002.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:51 PM)
By far her most impressive win in a long time.
Mike (St. Louis, MO)
Ok, good call on Safin. Falling behind a set to Fed is fatal and I don't see Roger getting broken. Let me rephrase my question. Are you willing to make a bold statement and say ANYBODY beats Federer here(this year or in the near future)?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:53 PM)
Mike, happy to follow up. Federer may have lost just a tad of his invincible aura this year with the losses to Canas and Volandri and what I would call an unconvincing French Open final vs. Nadal (1-for-17 on breakpoints). But he still wears an S under his shirt here. Is it possible he'll be beaten? Yes, and Safin would seem like one of the logical candidates.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:55 PM)
The way I just saw JC Fererro play Blake, he may be more of a threat in this quarter than I thought...Tipsarevic is an X factor.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:57 PM)
I'd love to hear other opinions on this... are Roddick and Nadal the only guys capable to beating Federer here? Or does anyone see Djokovic or others as a possibility?
Michael (Marietta, GA)
With 8 seeded players falling today, could we see an unseeded person making a run into the semis or maybe even the finals. Could you think of a couple of players that might be able to make that run. Thanks, Great chat as always. You do a great job.
Bonnie DeSimone (2:01 PM)
Not that I think he's necessarily ready to make a final, but Tipsarevic has earned the nickname "Stealth Serb" from me and Greg. He's a very appealing player. Goes all out and gives smart answers afterwards. Unlike the Big Three Serbs, he didn't leave the country to train and truly appreciates getting to where he's gotten. I'll look forward to his match against Ferrero.
Nathaniel (Naples, FL)
How do you like Richard Gasquet's chances? He's a diaper dandy as Dick Vitale might say.
Bonnie DeSimone (2:03 PM)
How can you argue with a Dickie V alliteration? Gasquet is absolutely capable of coming through that quarter, though his path would lead through Roddick, who's beaten him both times they've played (both on hard court). It's on my mind to ask some of the French folks why their players have done so well here this time when they're allegedly a clay-court nation...
Bonnie DeSimone (2:05 PM)
Folks, I hate to leave you but the events of the day have overtaken us... I need to listen to Hingis' press conference and pound out a few stories here. We're advancing the Battle of the Geriatrics tomorrow, by the way: Bjorkman (age 35) vs. Arthurs (36). My apologies to those whose questions didn't get answered. We'll see you again tomorrow.
Wimbledon Moderator (6:20 PM)
Come back Saturday when our gang at Wimbledon will be back to chat some more! First a report at 1 p.m. ET with Greg Garber and/or Bonnie DeSimone and then Todd Martin will be by at 4 p.m. ET! Join us Saturday!
Greg Garber (12:59 PM)
Soggy greetings from Wimbledon. Greg garber here to asnwer your questions. Bonnie will be along in a bit and Todd martin follows us at 2 PM EST
Bruce (doubs fan)
As long as we're on the topic, who are your picks to win both men's and women's doubles this year?
Greg Garber (1:03 PM)
Bruce: You are a rare bird. See my doubles story, which will be posted on Sunday -- a day off here. I'll go out on a huge limb and take the Bryans and Raymond-Stosur -- the top seeds. With Mirnyi and Bjorkman already gone, Bryans have a great shot.
GINO DETROIT, MI
WILLIAMS OR MORIGAMI?
Greg Garber (1:06 PM)
Gino: That is the hanging chad over here right now. Venus won the first set easily, 6-2, But, she's down 1-4 with Morigama serving in the second. Looks like rain will end things for the day, so advantage to Sharapova. She just snuck her match in before the rain and now has at least a full day off (maybe two), while Williams will have to come back on Monday to finish and pick up her game to do so. Sharapova would be waiting for a terrific fourth-round match...
Wimbledon Moderator (1:22 PM)
Hang on folks, we're having some technical difficulties this afternoon. We'll get Greg and Bonnie back up and running as soon as we can!
Wimbledon Moderator (2:02 PM)
Looks we won't be able to get Bonnie and Greg back today. But stay tuned, as we'll have Todd Martin on at 4 p.m. ET.
Uncle Jesse (San Francisco)
I have a serious issue. Say someone wins 7-6 1-6 7-5. They won a total of 15 games, and the loser won 17. Tennis needs to address this matter. How can you lose a match if you won more games? It's a disgrace.
Todd Martin (4:01 PM)
Uncle Jesse: This scoring scenario creates one of the beauties of our sport. This is a mentally strenuous game and being good when it counts is a premium.
John (Detroit)
I really didn't expect him to make a run, but I sure wish Tim Henman would have made it through the first week. It's unfortunate that he was never able to cash one of those runs in when he was in his prime, but I'm afraid his window is closing. Too bad.
Todd Martin (4:03 PM)
John: His window definitely is more closed than it once was, but Tim is still a very capable player. The issue now (as it is for most older players) is that he has to be on every day. Most every player can challenge him, but similarly by way of his experience and skills he can challenge most everyone else.
Birmingham, Alabama
As an African American, it saddens me to see James Blake play tennis. Hasn't anyone told him that this is a sport of competition not one of passive participation?
Todd Martin (4:05 PM)
Birmingham: I think that James has more heart inside that doesn't come out. James has had some fitness issues that is a result of nervous energy being burned at a high rate. In my opinion, he sometimes works too hard to suppress his outward energy.
Tennis Fan
Although their head to head doesn't look like it, I definitely think Roddick can take down Federer. The problem is that Federer is as deeply into his head as Nadal is in Federer's. That is much tougher to get over than any technical deficiencies. I hope Roddick will at least be able to push Federer in the semis like he did at the USO final last year.I would be surprised if Nadal made it to the finals of Wimbledon again. Djokovic is a bit of a wild card; he's got the talent but I don't think he truly believes he can beat Roger yet.
Todd Martin (4:07 PM)
Tennis Fan: I agree with you that Andy has the game to get to Roger. What remains to be seen is does he have the heart and head. All it takes is one match on the right day.
Mike (St. Louis, MO)
Since I've been more asking and not giving my opinion, I LOVE Djokovic as a possibility to beat Roger. The kid's got some serious game and I see him as having the swagger it takes to beat a powerhouse like Federer. His confidence against Roger, I believe, would be right up there with Rafa. Still, Federer will win again.
Todd Martin (4:09 PM)
Mike: I agree about your assessment that Djokovic has a presence that could be resistent to Roger's dominance, but I do not see him as being a legitimate threat to him this year on this surface.
Jeff Jacksonville, Fl.
In Venus's 1st match; Serena was offering "tips" from her seat that Venus acknowledged later helped her win. Why wasn't this considered coaching ?
Todd Martin (4:12 PM)
Jeff: That is a good question. However, coaching is the hardest of rules to enforce. Unfortunately, they don't enforce the rule as strictly as I believe they could.
Miami, Florida
Todd, on the Champions Tour you seem to have figured out how to handle Courier, who you had a lot of trouble with on the regular tour. You've played Sampras 3 times and in each match you've gone to a champions tie break and you had match points in 2 of the matches. Since you've been so close do you think you've figured out how to play him well enough to get some wins?
Todd Martin (4:17 PM)
Miami: I hardly feel like I have figured them out. But, I do feel like a better tennis player in certain respects. I am much more patient with the ebb and flow of a match and am willing and more capable of adjusting my tactics during a match.
Terrell (Atlanta, GA)
I think Federer is so successful in the modern era b/c the men's game lacks variety (lack of all court players). I don't think there has been this wide of a gap between the top 2 or 3 players and the rest of the field. Your thoughts?
Todd Martin (4:19 PM)
Terrell: Roger is dominant because he is outstanding. There are ways for the others to narrow the gap, improving their games coming forward being one of them. What never can be overlooked is how good Fed and Nadal are at competing in the mind and heart.
Matt. Miami, FL
Who's the most in-form player that they haven't shown us on TV?
Todd Martin (4:21 PM)
Matt: I would say one of two guys, Richard Gasquet or Jo-Wilfred Tsonga. Gasquet has cruised by some good players and Tsonga has won lots of matches on grass of late and has won impressively thus far at Wimby.
Bradley (Avon, Colorado)
Robby Ginepri did really well getting to the US Open semifinal a few years ago, but he seems to be struggling now. What's going on with him?
Todd Martin (4:23 PM)
Robby, like many players with immense talent, plays awfully well when things are going well. The problem being that it is difficult to get out of ruts relying on "playing through it".
Walker Huntersville,NC
I'm a BIG williams sister fan, and that thought of them possibly meeting in the final really makes me happy. Do you think that it will happen given Venus Williams scratchy form of late? Especially coming up against Sharapova who's serve has gotten better?
Todd Martin (4:26 PM)
Walker: I just did something silly and checked the draw. As if with the Williams sisters it matters. They beat most everyone when in form. That being said, I would not expect them both to be in the final. It is no incredible long shot though.
zach (mpls)
Do you think andy roddick will win finaly
Todd Martin (4:37 PM)
Zach: The fact of the matter is that he has an outside chance. Of course, everyone other than Federer has an outside chance. The good thing in my eyes is that he probably has the second best chance of anyone in the draw.
Justin Sarno (Los Angeles, California)
Todd, you recently indicated the following: "To an extent, I would agree that more parody is always better." What kind of "parody" are you looking for in the men's game -- Federer dressing up as Serena Williams and trying to win the women's crown? Or, wait, did you mean "parity." Thanks, sincerely, an English major.
Todd Martin (4:41 PM)
Justin: Touche mon frere (not a french major). Trying to work fast, but thanks for the "somewhat" constructive criticism. It is very helpful regardless of its intent.
Todd Martin (4:46 PM)
So far, the biggest surprise for me was the mismatch yesterday of Federer against Safin. I watched both practice up close last week and was expecting Safin to be up to a better showing than what happened yesterday. This is definitely an indication that Federer is in form and ready for all comers, but also that grass courts just mystify some players. Safin has a skill set perfect for grass and he only mustered one good set yesterday.
Justin Sarno
Todd, how can you say (see above) that Nadal's dominance on clay is superior to Federer's dominance on grass. Yes, Nadal has won 3 French Opens, but Federer is working on 5 Wimbledons AND has gotten to the finals of the French the last two years. I'd say the equilibrium tips in Roger's favor. Like his early problems with Nalbandian, Roger will soon figure Nadal out and begin thrashing him...
Todd Martin (4:51 PM)
Justin: I think you make a good point. In fact, I think it is hard to distinguish between the two. What does it for me is that there are SEVERAL more players who can compete at that level on clay there are on grass.
Mora, Minnesota
Todd, does Rafa look like he's in better form than he was last year? I would love to see another final between him and Federer, except it would be nice if he could push Federer more than four sets.
Todd Martin (4:55 PM)
Mora: Hard to say so far. He should be a much player this year, both in general and on grass specifically. He has a tough draw now with Soderling followed possibly by Youzhny. Looking way ahead, Berdych is another that can press him. That is just to get to the quarters.
Todd Martin (4:56 PM)
Well guys. I will be working at 2 ET next week. Looking forward to more time with you. Also, look for my preview of week two to be posted tomorrow or first thing Monday. Be well.
Wimbledon Moderator (8:24 PM)
Mike(Atlanta)
What exactly is it about Fed's game that makes him unbeatable on grass. It seems like he can be human on hard courts and certainly clay. Why is he god-like on the sod?
Greg Garber (1:04 PM)
Mike: He is not only artisitic but also a very instictive player. The Wilson folks gave ESPN one of his rackets for the studio and I tried it yesterday. Incredibly heavy and high-strung. His wrists must be made of iron. In any case, his intuitive skills allow him to adjust to the skidding ball and all those bad bounces. He's just a natural on this most natural of surfaces...
sean (lynnfield, ma)
It's a shame television does not cover great matches like Bjorkman vs. Arthurs. Those guys have aged so well.
Greg Garber (1:07 PM)
Sean: Good to hear from a tennis afficionado. I agree with you. The problem is, Arthurs (36) is getting crushed by the young guy -- Bjorkman is 35. He's up 6-2, 6-1 and 1-1 in the third. Bjorkman had the great semifinal run here last year and reached the round of 16 at Roland Garros. How do you have some of your best results ever -- when he could be playing senior events?
Gary Tulsa OK
Why when the discussion is about "what's wrong with American tennis" is no one honest about the effect of the NCAA permiting so many foreign "professionals" to play college tennis? Often these players are in their 20s and have years of pro experience. Todd Martin, James Blake, the Bryan brothers, etc. all benefitted from some college experience. But most Division I programs now have no (or very few) American kids and the scholarships all go to foreign players. If the USTA wanted to see more American success they would find a way to work with the NCAA on limits. Most sports such as basketball and football use colleges to develop players but not tennis - at least not American kids. Why is this NEVER mentioned by outspoken announcers like McEnroe - who played a year of college? It is just as bad in Division II.
Greg Garber (1:09 PM)
Gary: You mkae a valid point. Many great players went the college route and there seem to be fewer opportunities these days for Americans. Update: Play scheduled to begin in about 15 minutes.
John(NY)
Maria vs Venus Who Will Win?
Greg Garber (1:14 PM)
John: Cutting right to the chase during the rain delay, eh? Well, now that the Serena-Henin quarterfinal is in serious doubt, this will be the most anticipated early-round match (the fourth). They have a history, as you know, but there are mitigating factors here. Venus has NOT been sharp here. She dropped a set in the first round and was down 3-5 in the third set earlier today with Akiko Morigami. On the other hand, Sharapova is still bothered by a tender right shoulder, which limits the speed of her serve. If Maria can get to the semifinals of the French, I'll take her to reach the quarters at the site of her first Grand Slam singles title.
Mark, Virginia
What's Justine's place in history if she wins the title and captures the career slam?
Greg Garber (1:19 PM)
Mark: Of all the folks whistling under the radar, Henin is far ahead of the field. A win here would give her a personal Grand Slam. This is significant, because the others who have done it are: Margaret Court, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Serena Williams -- and you can add Billie Jean King, who won the Australian Open before Open Era began. That's a Hall of Fame list. While clay is her best surface (she's won four titles at Roland Garros), it underlins her versatility that she can be a threat on grass. Last year, she came very cose to beating Amelie Mauresmo in the final here.
john dedham massachusetts
I enjoy watching tennis but why in a rain delay do they show the same matches over and over? I would enjoy seeing other players not just the americans as I think others would!!!
Greg Garber (1:20 PM)
John: We'll send your note along to the programming folks. For example, the third-set tie-break with Nadal and Soderling was terrific. It was 7-all when rain sent them to the locker room.
Sonny ATL
How incredibly short-sighted and patently unfair the snooty folk at Wimbledon are. To place the bottom half of the Men's draw at such a competitive disadvantage is unthinkable! Were the shoe on the other foot, Federer would probably withdraw. . . Shame on the Blue Bloods!
Greg Garber (1:23 PM)
Sonny: Fedrerer is not only the best layer, but he's had the best luck this fortnight. When Tommy Haas pulled out -- as Todd Martin pointed out in a piece for us -- it was pennies from heaven. Now, Nadal is looking at the possibility of three matches in three days. And he's going to need the rain to let up just to finish against Soderling.
Heather, CT
Het Greg, enjoyed your stuff. What do you think of Marcos Baghdatis right now? He is looking solid. Is he the player we saw at the '06 Aussie Open or the proverbial flash in the pan?
Greg Garber (1:25 PM)
Heather: Oh, he's no flash in the pan. He just blew David Nalbandian -- a pretty sound player -- off the court. I belive he'll smoke Nikolay Davydenko (three games away from winning over Gael Monfils) and advance to the quarterfinals...
Paul, Bermuda
The one underdog left (men's and women) in the draw that can make some noise is ....
Greg Garber (1:27 PM)
Paul: How about Tamira Paszek, the 16-year-old from Austria? She beat Elena Dementieva to advance to the fourth round, where she'll face Svetlana Kuznetsova. On the men's side, Jo-W Tsonga has a shot later today (tomorrow?) against fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet...
Kathy Idabel , Oklahoma
i have seen them treat some players with cramps and then i have seen them tell the player there is nothing they can do until the game is over. some players are treated different than other why
Greg Garber (1:29 PM)
Kathy: Serena hit the ground and was clearly in agony. She's entilted under the rules to a trainer's diaqgnosis and then three minutes for treatment. Yes, it took longer than that but she is a two-time champion here. The rain delay makes this an intriguing match. Can she get that cramp smoothed out if they are called out to play again?
yaffe: (dc)
did a-rod play today, how did he do?
Greg Garber (1:30 PM)
Yaffe: Dude, get in the game. We have scores on line. Roddick follows Serena, whenever (if ever) that match is completed.
Jacob (MI)
Any word on when play will resume?
Greg Garber (1:32 PM)
jacob: At 1:30 EST (6:30 PM here), the rain is still coming down. I just stuck my head outside. The tarps are still on. There is supposed to be a break in the weather, but who knows?
Bethany, Miss.
If Nadal were right handed would he have won any slams? Is he good enough?
Greg Garber (1:34 PM)
Bethany: I just asked the esteemed (and beloved?) Joel Drucker. He says no. The lefty forehand goes cross court up and away from the righty backhand -- i.e. Roger Federer. Tennis is a game of instinct. Playing a lefty, forces you out of instinct. Joel knows this because he is a lefty (who wrote a book about a lefty named Conners.
J Shaky (Mt. Pleasant, MI)
How does everythig go down if the rain simply doesn't stop today?
Greg Garber (1:38 PM)
J Shaky: Very, very tough for the men. The women, at least, got the bottom half of the draw's matches in. This means that only Henin is already into the quarters and they're not much catching up to do. The men, because they play best-of-five matches, are WAY behind. While Federer is into the quarters, no one else is.We could be decked later tonight with a handful of men's third round matches still incomplete.Folks, I'm stepping aside for Bonnie. Remember, Todd martin comes along at the top of the hour.
CB (NE)
Bonnie DeSimone (1:39 PM)
Hi CE and everyone else on the chat... I was just outside talking to some of Serena's people, and they think she's going to be OK. I'm sure she's never been so happy to see rain.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:41 PM)
There are some knowledgeable folks peculating that it's a muscle tear rather than a cramp... I was struck by the way her calf muscle suddenly bulged out. She struck it with her racket before she went down in a heap.
Jim (Jackson, MS)
Anyone spotted Richard Williams doing a rain dance?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:43 PM)
Most of the time when people point to the sky, they're referring to the Man Upstairs. When Richard stood up and pointed to the sky, we're pretty sure he was talking about the Weatherman Upstairs...
Eric (NYC)
Greg, why doesn't all Grand Slam venues build stadium that has retractable roofs? Especially in Wimbledon where you are guaranteed to have rain outs every year. Aussies has it right with 2 roof in Rod Laver and Vodaphone. Roland Garros is less of a problem...Flushing Meadows should really have an Indoor stadium...what do u think?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:45 PM)
I'll field this one. Centre Court will have a retractable roof starting in 2009. As for Arthur Ashe Satdium, the USTA had a choice when they built it to construct it in a way where a roof could be added, or not. The first option was more expensive, so they went the other way.. it would be prohibitive to add a roof now, so we're sentenced to the towel brigade there for a while.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:46 PM)
Having said that, the fact that there is night ball in NY means you can make matches up MUCH faster when it dries out.
Eliezer (New Brunswick, NJ)
Hi Bonnie...I'm a big Federer fan, and although I haven't been able to see very much of him during this tournament, it struck me during the last few tournaments how low his first serve percentage seemed to be. For a player who relies more on placement than power, why do you think this is, and what chance does he have of capturing a 5th Wimbledon if he's not serving well? You wouldn't happen to have FS stats, would you?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:47 PM)
I'm on it... going to get 1st serve numbers right now.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:48 PM)
Hold that thought. There's a lineup at the stats computer right now... but I'll come back to it.
Michael (Marietta, GA)
Bonnie, thanks for the chat. What are the rules on back to back matches. Could a player seemingly play 7 days in a row of matches. Also, could a player play more than one match a day?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:50 PM)
Michael, as you probably know, players frequently play singles and doubles matches in the same day. There was a lot of rain during the recent grass-court tuneup events here in England and there were some situations where players finished suspended matches, then played another full match the same day.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:52 PM)
To be honest, I'm not sure I can remember another situation in a Slam where that would have become a question... if anyone in chat-land can enlighten us, please do.
Dan, New Hampshire
Hey, whats up with Davydenko calling Wimbledon boring. Is there any top player more dreadful to watch? Maybe if he left, Wimbledon would be more colorful. No?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:53 PM)
Dan, I think Davydenko (who does struggle to express himself in English) wasn't referring to the competition itself but the entertainment options for the players when they aren't competing. I happen to love Wimbledon Village... but then again, I'm working longer hours here than Nikolay.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:58 PM)
OK, back to Eliezer's question about Federer's first serve...
Bonnie DeSimone (1:59 PM)
1st round vs. Gabashvili: 62%2nd round vs.Del Potro 58%3rd round vs. Safin 65%
Bonnie DeSimone (2:00 PM)
Now, I would argue that as long as you have a decent gap on whomever you're playing you're ahead even if you're having a bad day. So here are the opponents:
Bonnie DeSimone (2:01 PM)
1st round Gabashvili 55%2nd round Del Potro 54%3rd round Safin 60%
Jim (Jackson, MS)
Fed seemed to really kick his serve up a notch against Safin and play overall a little more aggressive with impressive results. Do you think we'll see more of this out of him or was a onte time thing to try and offset Safin's strong return game?
Todd Martin (2:01 PM)
Sharon, DC
Can Hewitt win another slam?
Bonnie DeSimone (2:02 PM)
This relates back to Eliezer's question as well. Since Safin has given Federer a hard time in the past, I have no doubt that he came out with a different mentality in that match.
Todd Martin (2:03 PM)
Sharon: If he can, it would be at Wimbledon. He would have to rely on having others beat the likes of Federer.
Meg, Belgium
With Federer and Nadal etched in as the top players in the world, can Djokovic ever become the No. 1 player?
Joy TN
Have you heard any news about JenCap???
Todd Martin (2:04 PM)
Joy, Greg and I got word that she's playing in an exhibition sometime in the near future, but neither of us can recall where/when that is. We'll try to get that to you in the next chat.
Todd Martin (2:05 PM)
Meg: Number 1 is a lot different than Number 2 or 3. Djokovic is a great player and has even better potential, but that last HUGE step is a tremendous challenge.
mike (boston)
federer v. laver in both their primes. who wins
Todd Martin (2:06 PM)
Mike: Don't know, but would love to see Laver have the opportunity to play the modern game and would be curious to see Federer play with wood rackets in the old days.
Jim (Jackson, MS)
How does young Novak looks thusfar. I've been very impressed with his all-around game this year but hasn't been a lot of coverage for him so far on TV.
Todd Martin (2:10 PM)
Jim: Novak Djokovic looks great. He has a one set lead on Kiefer right now. That is a tough matchup. A win will give him a big boost of confidence.
Todd Martin (2:17 PM)
Rafael: I really like Jankovic's chances, as well as Ivanovic. Vaidisova has a great game, but doesn't seem to play as freely as the Serbian players. In the near future for the men, I think there is going to need to be someone with a big game to dismantle Federer and Nadal. Someone like Berdych. The two best young all-court players are Djokovic and Baghdatis (who I was surprised beat Nalbandian in straight sets today).
Dan (Elk Grove Village, IL)
Todd,How is Pete Sampras' current game especially his serve and his weaker topspin backhand compared to his prime? You have given him some tough matches on Courier's tour.
Todd Martin (2:19 PM)
Dan: Pete's serve is disturbingly unchanged. He still serves as big (not that big of a deal), but he is still extraordinarily accurate. In fact, his backhand has improved. He has switched racket and string technology which seems to really have helped.
Armand (Visalia, CA)
How is Serena doing? Any updates on her calf? Was it just a cramp?
Todd Martin (2:20 PM)
Armand: Seems like she is still struggling. She is about to start up again. They said a "spasm-induced strain".
Cire (Los Angeles)
With the All England grass playing the way it has the past few years (slower and uh, bouncier), would Mr. Lendl have picked up a Wimby title playing in this era rather than the 80s?
Todd Martin (2:22 PM)
Cire: It would have been much more realistic for Ivan to have won at Wimby in modern conditions. He was outstanding, even on grass despite not eventually winning.
Eric (NYC)
Hey Todd, Petey and Roger has agreed to play some exhibition matches in Asia in coming months. Whats your take on these matches? Players rarely go all out in these matches, do they?
Todd Martin (2:25 PM)
Eric: Rest assured, Pete will want to challenge Roger as much as he possibly can. Similarly, Roger would be miserable if he were to lose to Pete. Trust that they will be putting their best feet forward, except if there is a substantial lead.
Cire (Los Angeles)
Do you agree that Federer needs to grow a playoff-beard for Roland Garros next year? Something like a Rothelisberger or Baron Davis-type beard... he could start on it this week..
Todd Martin (2:26 PM)
Cire: Doesn't appear that Roger is too supersticious. I think he is happy to rely on his racket to do the record breaking.
Shane, Lincoln, NE
What is it going to take for AROD to win the title.
Todd Martin (2:28 PM)
Shane: Andy Roddick is a great player. He will have to play his best in the semis and finals. He can get there by playing sub-par tennis, but not against Fed and Nadal. More than anything else, he will have to believe whole-heartedly in himself when presented with the opportunity.
Todd Martin (2:32 PM)
The weather report continues to be dodgy. There are now some men's players who might have to play 5 full matches in 6 or 7 days. Looks like they will more than likely be finishing on Monday next week.
Rafael from villahermosa mexico
I have a 11 years old son and I want him to make a next big step to be a good player. Do you think to send him to summer camps in Florida will make better or he need to play regular basis in usa. I ask this because mexico havent produce any top player and I am afraid that my son can become one more player without future??
Todd Martin (2:34 PM)
Rafael: I believe at 11 the most important thing is to establish proper fundamentals and to be a kid. Competition and exposure to other players is beneficial, but not essential at this early age.
Cire (Los Angeles)
BTW Todd, can you dunk?
Todd Martin (2:36 PM)
Cire: I played in my 35 and over league last night and was horrendous. Dunking didn't cross my mind when merely catching the ball felt like a miraculous physical achievement. Used to be able to dunk though. I can't jump but I am tall.
Ricky (GA)
Do you think Nadal has what it takes to be great on all surfaces?
Todd Martin (2:38 PM)
Ricky: I think he has already proven to be a great player on all surfaces. I believe he will eventually win a major other than the French. He was pretty close last year at Wimby.
Eric (NYC)
Todd, Roger is in the Qtrs with the Walkover and a bit of luck with the weather. How do you weigh the extended layoff for Roger, or the 5 matches in 6 days for Rafa? Who is at more of a dis-adv?
Todd Martin (2:40 PM)
Eric: Read my article from yesterday to hear more of my thoughts. Roger is an even bigger favorite. He is fortunate to have a relatively simple matchup in the quarters (Tipsarevic or Ferrero). Nadal is in a nasty situation, but he is as physically capable of overcoming this hurdle as anyone.
Mario San Francisco
Todd...What goes on in the head of a pro players during play...do they focus on tactics...strokes...aim where shots should go...Just like to pick up some tips as club player
Todd Martin (2:43 PM)
Mario: This is an instinctive and reactive game. Players train and prepare rigorously, but try to focus on the competition once on the court. Of course, there are times that they need to sort something out with stroke production.
Mario - San Francisco
Todd...do we see you as commentator one of these days in the ESPN broadcast booth ?...you would make a great addition with your insides
Todd Martin (2:45 PM)
I would like to try it out. I might have a voice made for a computer keyboard, but I do like to analyze the sport.
Eric (NYC)
Todd, why do you think Henin is on top of the game in WTA in recent years? It would be hard to imagine a guy who has a smallish frame, fighting spirit to be in the top 5 players in the world, let alone top 2...Chang was the last such guy. Your thoughts?
Todd Martin (2:52 PM)
Eric: Justine is very strong, especially in her core. Combine that with her technique which is modern and sound and her great timing she has more than enough power. What is most critical is the ability to compete and move; Justine does both exceptionally well.
Ricky (GA)
Do you think Hewitt has a chance to make it big again?
Todd Martin (2:53 PM)
Ricky: Lleyton Hewitt is a dogged competitor (unfortunately I know all too well). I don't think it is at all out of his capabilities to return to the top-5.
Mario - San Francisco
Ok...here is another question...why did James and Marty did not play doubles in Wimbeldon ?...are they still playing together ?
Todd Martin (2:55 PM)
Mario: James and Mardy still do play together sometimes. Wimbledon is best of 5 sets in doubles too, this can prove to be too much time on court, especially considering the weather is often not good over there.
David (Lisle, IL)
do you still follow northwestern sports/chicago area sports
Todd Martin (2:57 PM)
David: I am still a Wildcat through and through. I keep up pretty well, especially with the tennis team. I get back once every couple years.
Gopal (North Carolina)
Hi Todd, I think you are now 100% with your predictions. Mardy Fish, Radek, David Nalbandian and Karlovick are all gone. Can you give me your predictions on the remaining players out there (so that i can figure out who will actually win)
Todd Martin (2:59 PM)
Gopal: You are right that my darkhorse picks are gone. You left out Safin. This is the exact reason they play, it is a competition and everyday is different.
omid (zurich)
Todd, Fed mentioned he would like to come to the net more in a press conference recently. He said it would be ideal for him to serve and volley on the first 100% and sometime on the second. I don't understand why he doesn't think he can do this now. That is how he played when he beat pete at wimbledon, your thoughts?
Todd Martin (3:01 PM)
Omid: I think that Roger doesn't feel he volleys well enough point in and point out to come in that frequently. Pete's return and passing game is not what many of the guys are like now. I think he could experiment a bit more than he does now against some of his weaker opponents. His volleying would get better which would prepare him very well for volleying against Nadal and the like.
Rob, Phoenix, AZ
What do you think of Bagdhatis chances after roughing up Nalbandian today. Do you think he can make it to the end.
Todd Martin (3:03 PM)
Rob: I didn't like Baghdatis' chances before hand, but he has been impressive so far. I also like the matchup in the next round for him. He could be dangerous, he plays awfully well once he builds some momentum.
Todd Martin (3:04 PM)
Until tomorrow everyone. I hope we have more to talk about then.
Wimbledon Moderator (6:24 PM)
Rain, rain go away .. come back again .. uh .. never? We'll be back on Tuesday with hopefully more tennis to talk about. We'll get started at 1 ET!
Bonnie DeSimone (1:01 PM)
Good evening from Wimbledon... where mold is creeping into our laptops and mushrooms are growing on the courts. Bonnie DeSimone here from monsoon-land... fire away, chatters.
chauncey (teaneck)
was Serena's performance yesterday one of the greatest feats you ever saw?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:07 PM)
Chauncey -- That is quite the subject of discussion here at Wimbledon... Serena got an assist from the rain, for sure. I thought it was a valiant and very characteristic effort. Some of my colleagues in the British press disagree and say she was "acting...''
Bonnie DeSimone (1:09 PM)
that is, after play resumed. I tend to be very careful about trying to read a player's mind. Some people pointed to the fact that she jumped up and down after she lost a point as evidence of this "acting...'' and even wonder why she never took the bathroom break shewas lobbying for.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:10 PM)
I think adrenaline is a powerful drug. I think everything we saw was legit, and quite dramatic. All your opinions are welcome.
Anthony (Austin)
Why didn't they finish the Nadal match first thing today? Seems absurd how many days this match will stretch into.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:11 PM)
Anthony -- I'm sure Rafa would quite agree. Six delays now in his match, which began four days ago. This is less a tennis match now than an ultramarathon.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:12 PM)
Having said that, the tradition not only at Wimbledon but other tournaments as well is that any suspended match is scheduled SECOND that day.
Ross (TN)
How real is the possibility of a Monday men's final?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:13 PM)
We hope that won't happen, but yes, it's real and last came to pass in 2001 when Goran Ivanesevic won.
Matt (Indianapolis)
What is team USA's chances of advancing to the final of the Davis Cup and eventually winning it this year?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:15 PM)
I think the chances are excellent. The team is probably the best in the world on paper because of Roddick's commitment and the fact that the Bryan brothers are an automatic point. Blake's play recently is not encouraging, but he played very well in the last tie against Spain. If your worst problem is having a slumping top 10 player as your second singles guy, that's not too shabby.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:16 PM)
The surface selected by Sweden (indoor hardcourt) should make it a very favorable away tie.
Paul (Jacksonville, FL)
Can we just hand the trophy to Federer now? He is going to be well rested going into his last three matches (unlike any of his possible threats, including Roddick) and he is in top form.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:17 PM)
Paul, that wouldn't be any fun. And I'm not convinced that all these days of sitting around not playing are good for him.
Jeff (Indy, IN)
They should have played on the middle Sunday. Please tell me you agree.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:18 PM)
Since you said please, I will agree, even though I have to admit I enjoyed MY day off.
Cindy (Gainesville, FL)
I am still perplexed by the committee's decision to skip play on the middle Sunday. As I was watching the concert for Diana, all I could think about was the number of matches that could have been completed on that beautiful day!
Bonnie DeSimone (1:19 PM)
See my previous answer, Cindy. I actually did do a little work that day and the afternoon was crisp and cool, sort of autumn-like. It was very breezy, but that seems like a small price to pay at this point.
Jerry (Hampton, Virginia
Bonnie, what's the latest on Serena? Will she be able to play against Justine, tomorrow I believe? Thanks!
Bonnie DeSimone (1:22 PM)
The very little bit of new information we've received is from her father, who said she has a slight tear. That contradicted what the tournament doctor said. It's highly unlikely that the sisters' doubles match will go on today due to the weather, but that certainly would have told us something about her condition IF she played, which she said she'd do everything in her power to do.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:22 PM)
To clarify -- the doc said she had an acute muscle strain.
Raj (st augustine, FL)
Can Ferrero threaten Federer? I saw a little bit of his match vs Tipsarevic as well as vs. Blake and he looks to be near the form that he had back in 2003 when he got to the US Open finals...
Bonnie DeSimone (1:26 PM)
Many of us are surprised by his play, though he's never been a complete pushover here -- two 3rd rounds and two 4th rounds in the last four years. He really looks confident and is moving well. Bear in mind that the courts have been slowed down here considerably.
Michael (Marietta, GA)
Great column on Serena. I don't believe she was acting. In general, do you think the rain delay gives more advantage to the person who is losing at that point, or does it just depend on the situation. It looks like nadal as struggled after rain delays in his current match.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:28 PM)
Thanks, Michael. The delay question is a good one and depends on so many variables... I don't think the same player reacts the same way, necessarily. I just spoke to doubles player Andy Ram of Israel who said the mood in the locker room is seesawing between cranky and manic. The guys are apparently getting into some water fights, as if they needed any more water.
Mike (St. Louis)
Is this year's weather the worst you've seen at the Championships?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:29 PM)
This is my first Wimbledon, so I'm beginning to think it's my fault.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:29 PM)
Watch the site, by the way, for the mother of all weather stories by my colleague Greg Garber.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:31 PM)
Speaking of Greg, he's about to take the steering wheel here. Cheerio for now.
Cindy (Gainesville, FL)
Given Serena's abilities on the tennis court I cannot imagine why she would need to use this kind of gamesmanship to gain an edge on Justine. This sure feels like classic Richard Williams chicanery.
Greg Garber (1:33 PM)
Greetings, folks. Greg Garber here, ready for your questions.Cindy: Every little edge helps in a competitive match. Some folks here wonder if she's got a built-in excuse if Henin happens to win.
Greg Garber (1:36 PM)
For those of you wondering if Roger Federer's walk-over with Tommy Haas' withdrawl counted on his win-streak on grass, Greg Sharko of the ATP weighs in: He says that it ISN'T an official win, which means the win over Safin in the third round was Federer's 51st.
CB (NE)
How unbeliveable was Serena's win? What a gutsy performance. Any word if she will play doubles with Venus?
Greg Garber (1:38 PM)
The Williams sisters' doubles match is still on the scheudle, but probably won't be playede today. Venus is still in the first game with Sharapova and it's raining again. How about this statistic: Rafal Nadal has now seen his match with Robin Soderling interrupted seven times -- and has been played over the course of four days and now, maybe five.
Jesse (Manhattan, NY)
does hitting your cramped area with a racquet really help? I was shocked when Serena started whacking her calf
Greg Garber (1:40 PM)
Jesse: Think about the context f the moment. I'm sure she thought it was the end of the tournament. I think she was acting more out of frustration than attacking the calf cramp with the idea of first-aid.
TiM (Pittsburgh)
Her opponent handled Serena's outbursts quite well. I would've never shaken her hand for she completely acted like a child on the court. It was pathetic.
Greg Garber (1:42 PM)
TiM: Daniela Hantuchova was clearly NOT pleased, but she handld the match with a lot of class. At one point, she came over and stood by her to see how she was and it seemed to affect her emotionally.
joanie
How impressed is everybody with Juan Carlos Ferrero's play at Wimbledon? Nobody saw him coming and he's just pulverizing his competition. It's very exciting to watch. I hope this means that the Mosquito is back and biting. :)
Greg Garber (1:43 PM)
Joanie: Good call. His best result here and he's very happy about it. The run ends, of course, when he plays Federer in the quarterfinals.
Cindy (Gainesville, FL)
Do you think any of the guys really stand a chance of dethroning King Roger?
Greg Garber (1:44 PM)
Cindy: No.
Walt (Philadelphia)
Do you think one reason they didn't try to catch up on the middle Sunday this time was the fact The Concert for Diana was taking place that night at Wembley Stadium and concert officials may have specifically asked Wimbledon officials not to play on the middle Sunday no matter what because of it potentially interfering with what had to be a long-ago scheduled event?
Greg Garber (1:46 PM)
Walt: No, I don't think they factored that in. Fact is, they have only played matches three times on the middle Sunday and, really, they weren't all that far behind. Wimbledon is very stubborn about its tradition and they're STILL hoping to pull this thing off on time.
SD Randes Los Angeles CA
Don't the organizers of the tournament have to start considering starting these matches at 8 am local time? I mean guys are still in the third round, its a joke! Taking off the middle Sunday was absurd and indefensible, but that point has already been made here. Is there a chance that we may see 4 semis on Saturday and 2 finals on Sunday, or a Monday finish?
Greg Garber (1:47 PM)
SD: When I'm hitting balls across the street at Wimbledon Park every morning -- as luck would have it, at 8 AM -- I wonder the same thing. Problem is, no spectators would show up. These rain delays are always overblown in the early going. The worst-case scenario probably looks like a men's final on Monday.
victor alexandria, la
do you think this rain delay will help andy roddick,s game?
Greg Garber (1:49 PM)
Victor: No, I think it hurts. Rodick was rolling, 6-2 in the first set over Mathieu, and now it starts raining with him srving for the set. Tough way to come out of the box.
Walt (Philadelphia)
Do you think they should install lights at Wimbledon? While it would break tradition, they could then break things up into two sessions as is done at the Australian and US Opens as well as allow for play into the night (even if only on Centre Court, Court 1 and Court 2).
Greg Garber (1:52 PM)
Walt: They'll never install lights here. The All England Club CEO's comments on Monday suggest not much will ever change. Although a ittle bird told me the roof -- scheduled for completion nin 2009 -- will be rushed and finished in time for Wimbledon 2008.
Gaithersburg, MD
Assuming rafa gets by soderling, who else do you think can beat nadal? it looks like he has a clear path to the final - just like last year, whereas federer always seems to have play the harder players.
Greg Garber (1:53 PM)
That's a big assumption. rafa is at 4-all in the fifth and stewing during the seventh rain delay. Let's see if he can get by Soderling -- a guy many predicted would give him trouble.
Jacob (SF, CA)
I keep hearing accusations of Serena using gamesmanship during her match. What did she do? Because from watching the match the only thing she did was ask for a bathroom break but she never actually took one.
Greg Garber (1:55 PM)
Jacob: In talking to folks here, the complaint was that she seemed to over-drmaticize the injury in the third set -- two hours after the crap occured. She was dragging her leg around on her service games, but on one occasion when she missed a shot, she more than a foot in the air.
Tim (Detroit)
For those of us who missed Mauresmo's match, what can you tell us about her defeat?
Greg Garber (1:57 PM)
Tim: It was just a matter of not having any confidence after her appendix was removed back in March. She was up 5-3 and serving for the first set - and it went to a tie-breaker. It was 6-3 in the breaker -- and she lost the last five points. That was essentially the match as Vaidisova won in three. Mauresmo, who was the defending champion, needs some more matches to regain that confidence.
Tim (Detroit)
The roof isn't really going to solve the problems by early rain is it?
Greg Garber (1:58 PM)
Tim: It will help because on a rainy day they get one match in on Centre Court, but can get four or five with a roof. Multiply that over two or three days and they'd be in much better shape.
Jerry (Hampton, Virginia)
Greg, there is no way on earth Serena could have faked that injury yesterday for so long and not be outed by someone knowledgeable. Serena is not that good and actress--smile! With that said, if Justine beats her tomorrow and goes on to win the championship, props to her!! But, she has to show she can win it all on grass; for the first time!!
Greg Garber (2:00 PM)
Jery: Some would say that Serena aspires to be an actress even more than a tennis player. Clearly, she didn;t fake the injury -- you could see her left calf seized up -- some people object to her "performance" in the third set long after the cramp calmed down. And now, we make way for the Honorable Todd Martin. Fire those questions in...
Todd Martin (2:01 PM)
Hello everyone. Can you believe they are still playing 3rd round matches? Interesting tennis so far. More to come...hopefully.
Garrett (NC)
I see nothing wrong with what Serena did yesterday. It was a bit of gamesmanship. Happens all the time in soccer. What have you have to do to get a bit of competitive edge WITHIN THE RULES is ok by me. Hantuchova shouldn't be bothered by Serena "faking" an injury. It's only more time for her to rest anyway.
Todd Martin (2:03 PM)
Garrett: Don't know if this was directed to me, but I couldn't agree morre. Except, I don't believe it was gamesmanship. I think she hurt herself somewhat significantly and it hampered her dearly, forcing her to lose the second set. She hit every ball full bore in the third and they just so happened to go in.
Joe (Birmingham)
What do you think of Nalbandian just almost quitting in the 3rd set and losing and of Davydenko saying this tourney is boring and yet he is still in it?
Todd Martin (2:04 PM)
Joe: All I have is the score to go by, but I was disappointed that Nalbandian didn't make a better show against Baghdatis. I am also hoping that there is a bit of a language issue with Davydenko's statement.
Cindy (Gainesville, FL)
Wow, I'm watching highlights from the Soderling/Nadal match and wondering why we aren't getting to see this feisty affair live. It appears to be far more entertaining than anything else taking place on the courts.
Todd Martin (2:06 PM)
Cindy: So am I. The tennis seems to be very good and we are getting to see Nadal's vulnerability. Guys who can hit big and take control with one shot put Rafael in an awkward spot.
Sterling (West Virginia)
If Djokovic advances, do you think Hewitt could pull the upset?
Todd Martin (2:07 PM)
Sterling: Hewitt has a good chance against most everyone in the bottom half of the draw. He likes the grass and absorbs the added pace of a grass court as well as anyone. I would pick him over Djokovic.
Novice Tennis Fan
Two questions. How many tennis players compete in the men's tournament? Two, how do they construct the seedings? Is there an actual drawing?
Todd Martin (2:12 PM)
Novice: In women's and men's singles there are 128 players in the main draw. There is also a qualifying draw of 128 where the top 16 make it into the main draw. The top 32 players are seeded and placed evenly throughout the draw (1 and 2 are separated by half as are 3 and 4, 5-8 are split into quarters and so on).
Cindy (Gainesville, FL)
I've never seen Rafa this annoyed during a match. Do you think it is frustration over the incessant rain delays or does he have some kind of grudge against Soderling.
Todd Martin (2:14 PM)
Cindy: With his belief and ambition to win the tourney the stress of having been backed up this far, plus losing a 2-0 set lead, and a general feeling of discomfort against Soderling's game all contribute to his testiness.
Mike (Philadelphia)
The draw has really opened up for Henin and the winner of the Sharapova-Venus match, hasn't it, with Jankovic and Mauresmo going down. Do you see any of the others stopping them from the final?
Todd Martin (2:17 PM)
Mike: Once Henin gets past Serena I will believe her draw has opened up. If Serena feels okay for their quarterfinal I like Serena's chances if she is willing to fire away as she did in the third against Hantuchova. On the bottom half, Vaidisova and Ivanovic both are threats to be in the final.
Josh
During mixed-doubles matches, do the men serve it as hard as they can to the women, or is this an unspoken no-no?
Todd Martin (2:18 PM)
Josh: The best mixed doubles players don't hold back. I only played mixed once and it felt very strange, but I learned that you better play hard or else it goes very quickly in a losing direction.
Louis (Atlanta, GA)
What do you make of all the delay that Nadal has during the play of games. Meaning when play was announced, he went back to his chair. I believe he takes too long and I have heard on the TV that others are complaing. What are your thoughts as a former player. By the way, I miss watching you play in tournies. You were one of my favorites and I am sorry you never won a major!
Todd Martin (2:20 PM)
Louis: I am disappointed I never won a major too. Thanks. Nadal takes more than the allotted time between points. He should be penalized, but his opponents can control play also.
Shane, Lincoln, NE
What does it do for a players confidence to have your opponent mocking you and going back and forth with you like Nadal and Soderling?
Todd Martin (2:23 PM)
Shane: Frankly, I don't think it will phase Nadal. He is the utmost professional and will cope with whatever comes his way.
Neesee, NJ
Whats the sense in taking Sunday off when rain is scheduled for most of the next week? I mean when do you put prudence over tradition?
Todd Martin (2:25 PM)
Neesee: I believe the Referee and Committee made a mistake by not playing on Sunday. It hopefully will be an item discussed further after the tourney. It would be very good if they were to become more willing to improvise.
Ryan (Maysville, KY)
Todd, is there anything specifically about Federer's grass game that you as a coach would help him improve upon?
Todd Martin (2:27 PM)
Ryan: I would have him at net a lot more against his lesser opponents so that he would be more prepared to volley and defend the net against his better opponents later on in the event. All that being said, he seems to be doing just fine as is.
Michael (Marietta, GA)
How does this tournament being delayed affect the tournaments that are after it. I checked the schedule earlier today, and it shows three tournaments start on the 9th. Do most pros skip the tournaments right after Wimbledon? Would they delay the start of another tournament b/c of this one running over?
Todd Martin (2:30 PM)
Michael: That is a very good question. The following tourneys would not delay starting, but those players still in Wimby might have to pull out of those in case Wimby drags on significantly past Sunday.
Sterling (West Virginia)
Do you think that players could beat Federer by "messing" around with his head during the match?
Todd Martin (2:33 PM)
Sterling: Irritating the best might just make him better. Roger is very in control of himself and I doubt much could bother him anyway.
TiM (Pittsburgh)
What are your thoughts to using bigger balls to slow down the speed of the game? Shouldn't that bring more people to the net?
Todd Martin (2:35 PM)
Tim: The balls are already slower than they once were which has added stress to shoulders, elbows and the like. I am not sure that you could slow play down enough to make it advantageous to get to net. By getting slower, the passer will be in position even more often to crack passing shots.
Sterling (West Virginia)
Kuznetsova played really well today. Do you think she can give Sharapova/Venus winner trouble?
Todd Martin (2:36 PM)
Sterling: Terrible oversight on my part. Kuznetsova could be very dangerous. She has a hugely explosive game when she is on. And, she seems to be playing very well.
Cindy (Gainesville, FL)
Do you think Center Court will play differently when the roof is closed? If so, will it play faster?
Todd Martin (2:37 PM)
Cindy: I have never played on a indoor grass court. However, with moisture in the air, it might play slower due to the trapped moisture in the building. I would imagine Wimbledon has planned accordingly with sophisticated ventilation systems.
Joe (Alhambra, CA)
hi, todd! what is your assessment on federer's chance of winning his fourth consecutive u.s. open this year at flushing meadow? as i see it, many of the great male tennis players were less sucessful when they have passed the age of 25 as, obviously enough, marat safin is struggling mightily to win his first tournament since his victory in down under (he was 25 back then and i know that he had been battered by series of injuries that year and a few months the next year). i would like to know your comment on this. thanks!
Todd Martin (2:39 PM)
Joe: I believe that Safin and Federer are completely different animals. Federer has always been much more focused and dedicated to his work. With that mindset, I believe he will continue to get better for at least a few more years. His chances at the Open are better than anyone else's.
Sterling (West Virginia)
Will Roddick be another Michael Chang (1 major win)?
Todd Martin (2:40 PM)
Sterling: No. I think Andy will win another Major. Don't know when, but be patient and it will come.
Eric (Dallas, TX)
Has a tournament ever run beyond the second Sunday where the final match has to be played on Monday?
Todd Martin (2:41 PM)
Yes. Don't ask me the exact years, but I believe twice since 1990.
Walter (NY, NY)
How do you see the Ferrero-Federer match playing out? Any chance we see it go the distance?
Todd Martin (2:44 PM)
Walter: My prediction is that it will be a decisive win for Federer.
Shane, Lincoln, NE
How do you prepare yourself mentally for a match that started on saturday and looks like it is heading into wednesday still not completed?
Todd Martin (2:45 PM)
Shane: It IS fatiguing, but these guys are good at getting up when it looks like the rain will stop and then shutting down and relaxing when it is time to take a break.
Mario - San Francisco
Can you really read someone's serve or is it more trying to figure out the opponents tendencies ?
Todd Martin (2:47 PM)
Mario: Yes. Some players' serves are readable by where they toss the ball and how their racket approaches the ball. It is also good to be aware of tendencies. The combination of those two can make it pretty helpful when returning.
Sterling (West Virginia)
Which will happen first: Federer wins French, Nadal wins Wimbledon?
Todd Martin (2:48 PM)
Sterling: I believe Federer is better on clay than Nadal is on grass. I still think Roddick is the second favorite at Wimby.
Gary - Canada
Hi ToddI am a huge Nadal Fan - wonder if he's going to be able to handle the crazy rain delays. Why would they have started new matches before finishing off the 3rd round? I wonder about the other players and why they don't complain to the umps about slow play from Nadal or the insane grunting of Sharapova or Serena? Are the players scared to speak up?
Todd Martin (2:50 PM)
Gary: They rarely put a suspended match back on the schedule first for the next day because those players would have been on site until late the evening before. In this situation, I felt it appropriate to put those suspended matches on first. It is a pity that there are those in the quarters and some are two rounds behind.
Todd Martin (2:52 PM)
Gary: The players know what they are getting into before hand. No need to speak up. I do think Nadal needs to have the time rules enforced against him better.
mitch, ohio
Do many players drink? Obviously not before a big match, but will many players have a glass of wine with dinner or beer after a long match?
Todd Martin (2:53 PM)
Mitch: I will speak for myself, I never felt a glass of wine or a beer was bad, as long as I hadn't been physically compromised previously and if I was well-hydrated. Lots better than soda or the like.
Chris (KY)
Who will win a Grand Slam Title first: Jankovic, Ivanovic, or Djokovic, and which one?
Todd Martin (2:54 PM)
Chris: I believe Ivanovic.
Maher (Manama, Bahrain)
What do you think about Jo-Wilfried Tsonga? He's on great form, won 4 challenger titles this year. As a junior he won the 2003 US open defeating Baghdatis. You think he can beat Gasguet?
Todd Martin (2:55 PM)
Maher: I have been very impressed. Was confused what happened to him over the last couple years, but he has played great starting down in Melbourne this year. He has the game to beat Gasquet on grass. Tough dynamic of Frenchman v. Frenchman. WIll be interesting matchup.
Sterling (West Virginia)
After the trio of Federer, Nadal, and Roddick, who is the best grass court player?
Todd Martin (2:56 PM)
Sterling: Hewitt. I think he has proven over the years how comfortable he is on grass. Plus, he still has a champion's belief when at Wimbledon.
Sterling (West Virginia)
Will James Blake ever win a major? Seems to me like he can't even get past Week 1.
Todd Martin (2:59 PM)
Sterling: During the dominance of Fed and Nadal it might be a tough proposition for James.
Meredith (Miami,FL)
As a huge tennis fan, Wimbledon 2007 has just not been fun! I think anyone who wins is going to have an asterik next to it. How can blame you blame some these top players for losing early given these conditions?
Todd Martin (3:01 PM)
Meredith: This is their job. As a fan, yes the weather has effected my enjoyment as well, but the competitors are expected to be ready to play when it is time. It is still a dream for them to be playing there.
Kelly - Toronto, Canada
Given the delays in the Soderling-Nadal match who do you think has the mental edge? Nadal is expected to progress so is he more likely to be tense and frustrated at the delays than Soderling who is the underdog?
Todd Martin (3:02 PM)
Kelly: I like Nadal still, but it is dangerous to allow someone with Soderling's game stay in it this long. If he fires well once they resume Nadal could be in trouble. Still my belief is that Nadal is up to all challenges mentally.
Todd Martin (3:03 PM)
Until tomorrow guys. 2 ET I will be here again. Looking forward to it. Great questions and comments today.
Wimbledon Moderator (5:16 PM)
Wednesday is a national holiday in the good ol' US of A, but they're still playing tennis across the pond. So join Greg Garber, Bonnie DeSimone and Todd Martin as they all stop by to give you live reports on Wimbledon! They'll be the only chat Wednesday, but they'll go from 1-3 p.m. ET, so grab a hot dog from the grill and join them!
Bonnie DeSimone (1:05 PM)
Greg (NYC)
Does Rafael Nadal have any shot at all at overtaking Roger Federer as the world's #1 player? What would Nadal have to do to earn that distinction? We already know that Nadal owns Federer on clay but how many US Open and Wimbeldon wins would Nadal need to be considered "better than Federer"?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:08 PM)
It would take a considerable amount of time, Roger losing consistently and Nadal winning consistently... Nadal, by the way, is about to celebrate his TWO-YEAR anniversary at No. 2...
Bonnie DeSimone (1:09 PM)
On a more micro-level, I think Nadal will continue to improve on other surfaces. I wouldn't be surprised to see him reach finals in all four Slams someday.
STEVE Omaha, NE
If the Wialliams sisters are healthy and on their game, they are unstoppable!
Bonnie DeSimone (1:11 PM)
No one is ever completely unstoppable, but there are only a couple of players who can hang with them at their best. Serena is playing one of them right now in Justine Henin.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:12 PM)
Is anyone else relieved that Nadal-Soderling finished today? I was out at Court One for the finish, and when a few raindrops fell during a changeover, you could feel the crowd tense up.
STEVE Omaha, NE
And Serena is not 100% right now. Still she is so hard to beat!
Bonnie DeSimone (1:15 PM)
We think she might be a touch off and you can't afford to lose a step against Henin's all-court skill. By the way, we're still waiting to see if the sisters will play their doubles match which is a "to be arranged'' for later today.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:18 PM)
Quote of the day, on Roger Federer from Andy Roddick (who seems very relaxed):"We've been stuck in a locker room for nine hours a day, and (Federer)'s been chilling out taking the double-decker bus red thing tour maybe.''
Steve Omaha, NE
Why hasn't Roddicks game improved? He still is the same player he was 3 yrs ago. No improvement at all!
Bonnie DeSimone (1:20 PM)
Steve, I would respectfully disagree with that. I just think the adjustments Andy made in his game did not come naturally and it's been a process. He has looked sharp here and his match against Gasquet should be a cracker (as they say in Brit-speak)
Richard (Spring, TX)
I'm thinking of taking the family (4 of us) to Wimbledon next year. How much for tickets for 3 - 4 days of tennis?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:23 PM)
Richard, I'd advise checking wimbledon.org for that.
Steve Omaha, NE
I guess I am kind of a a results guy. He is so inconsistent and bottom line he does not win the big ones.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:25 PM)
Results are definitely a gauge, but everyone's results are suffering in the Age of Roger. I'm not making excuses -- just saying that in most top players' lives, the success line graph spikes up and down a few times. Let's see how he does here and in the U.S. hard court season. This month marks the one-year anniversary of his work with JImmy Connons, by the way.
CT (San Diego, CA)
The Serbian surge must be great for tennis, not only are they all attractive but they are young and easy to relate to for the younger generation. What are the chances either Djokovic a/o Ivanovic make the finals and win this years Wimbledon?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:28 PM)
I favor Ivanovic over Vaidisova but she will likely have to go through Venus to get to the final and I don't see that happening.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:31 PM)
Djokovic has a better shot... although the rain means he'll have to play the next four days in a row. He plays Hewitt next and two matches later he probably would get Nadal in the semis... neither is a cakewalk... but I like Djo's game on this surface.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:32 PM)
I know lots of people are pulling for a rematch of last year's Federer-Nadal final but Federer-Djokovic would be an entertaining matchup. Djo has matured a lot even since they played in Australia.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:33 PM)
Henin wins...
adi (toronto)
hi bonnie, does venus have a chance at justine when they meet on he finals? what's their head-head record?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:36 PM)
Stunningly... thanks for prompting me to look this up... they haven't played since 2003 semis of the Australian. Venus leads the series 7-1 and her only loss was the first time they played.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:39 PM)
Venus, of course, beat Justine in the 01 Wimby final, and again in the 02 semi here. But there's been a lot of tennis under the bridge since they last played, so history is exactly that. Venus has showed real strength and spark here. It would shape up as a great final.
nedacowan,marion,Il
could all the doubles just refuse to play the williams sisters. It is not tennis, it is a "knock out" out at thenet. Isn't that boxing or hockey?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:42 PM)
Don't think that would be sporting, Ned. We're waiting to see if they're going to play. With Venus into the quarters (against Kuznetsova in a matchup of Braids Past against Braids Present) and Serena a little wobbly, we're wondering if it's a good idea.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:45 PM)
A weather note: Only one rain delay today, so the tournament is largely caught up. But there's not much margin for error now on the men's side. If there's another bad day, we could be looking at a Monday final.
Sterling (West Virginia)
How is Wimbledon supposed to schedule matches? Does Nadal have to play 2 today or something?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:46 PM)
Nope, just has to play every day from now on if he keeps winning.
adi (toronto)
Thanks bonnie! that's news flash to me. wow, venus has owned justine. what a remarkable feat but then, that was before justine started tearing up the competition. they'll make a good finals match! who's your bet?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:52 PM)
Hmmm... that's a tough one. both should be very motivated. Garber says Venus. I might give it to Henin by the skin of an apple.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:53 PM)
Henin wants the career Slam... Venus wants to prove she's still on the top shelf.
Susan in San Francisco
What was the reaction to Soderling making fun of Rafa's tugs at his pants yesterday? Rafa's routine includes some strange quirks, but Soderling's behavior seemed really unprofessional, immature and mean spirited. Did Nadal and/or the crowd see it and react?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:59 PM)
Stay tuned for our story on the chippy mood of the marathon Nadal-Soderling match. Sufficre to say that Soderling said he was joking (the crowd did laugh) and Nadal was not amused. But playing well is the best revenge...
Todd Martin (2:00 PM)
Finally, some good weather and good tennis. Venus was impressive today and regardless of the result, the score had to surprise everyone.
Bonnie DeSimone (2:00 PM)
And with that, folks, it's over and out... one scheduling note for tomorrow... tournament organizers, apparently realizing it has rained here a little bit, have scheduled play on all courts beginning at 11 am local tomorrow. See ya... happy 4th.
Robert (Derry NH)
Is Jeff Salzenstein still playing? What did you take from that guy? Just someone whos talent only went so far or someone whos potential wasn't reached because of injuries?
Todd Martin (2:03 PM)
Carlos (Florid)
Hi Todd . What are the chances of A-ROD to get to the finals of Wimbledon ?
Todd Martin (2:04 PM)
Carlos: That last answer was for you. Andy has plenty of game and he is competing extremely well.
Sterling (West Virginia)
Any chance Youzhny knocks off Nadal?
Todd Martin (2:05 PM)
Sterling: Absolutely. Youzhny has a good record against Nadal and should feel very comfortable against him on the grass. Nadal will be ready for him, especially after getting through the match with Soderling.
People in America (USA)
Why aren't you out celebrating the 4th Of July?
Todd Martin (2:06 PM)
People: Personally, I would love to, and will later. But, for now, I have a commitment that must be met.
Sterling (West Virginia)
Todd, I heard the Australian Open is changing to a different hardcourt. Are they trying to Roger-proof it or something?
Todd Martin (2:11 PM)
Sterling: The Australian is apparently changing to hard court. That will hardly Roger-proof the tourney. Rebound Ace had its limitations as a surface (foot and leg injuries, balls wore out very fast, and variability with the heat). This choice also will give Lleyton Hewitt a better chance to be competitive.
Ryan (Florida)
Aside from the power 3 (Federer,Roddick,Nadal) Who has the next best chance to win?
Todd Martin (2:13 PM)
I'll change my tune completely and suggest Marcos Baghdatis. He is not the next best player left in the draw, but he has performed well at Wimby last year and this year, and he seems relatively unphased by big situations. Actually, seems to rise to the occasion better than most.
Bradley (Avon, Colorado)
I signed up for Wimbledon live, but haven't had a chance to watch any matches because I had to work. Which of the men's matches do you think have been the most entertaining so far?
Todd Martin (2:16 PM)
Bradley: I didn't get to see it, but the one I wanted to see the most (and it looked to be a pretty good one) was Djokovic vs. Kiefer.
Cire (Los Angeles)
Hi Todd, I tried to ask Garber and Bonnie the other day but no dice: During Serena's cramping against Daniella, what was the aerosol they sprayed on her calves during the injury timeout? Presume it wasn't AquaNet... thanks!
Todd Martin (2:18 PM)
Cire: I imagine it is either a numbing spray that is used on certain traumatized areas or a spray-adhesive that is used before taping a part of the body.
adi (toronto)
Hi Todd, with Nadal celebrating his 2nd year as No.2, which do you think will happen first - Nadal dethroning Roger for No. 1 or Roddick replacing Nadal @ No. 2?
Todd Martin (2:20 PM)
Adi: With Nadal continuing to dominate an entire period of time each year it is hard to imagine that he will dip below #2. His learning curve is still eerily steep and it will show on other surfaces. I imagine he will threaten #1 first.
Maher (Bahrain)
Jonas Bjorkman is having one of his best years on tour. He's 35 years old but it seems like he wont retire any time soon. Is it because of his gamestyle that he's still playing on a high level at this age?
Todd Martin (2:22 PM)
Maher: Jonas' success is due in large part to his tremendous mindset. He won't lead in many statistical categories but he will fight and believe in himself as much as most anyone. Combine that with his willingness to come to the net and get dirty and it is a recipe for another couple years of being a factor.
Ryan (Florida)
If a healthy Andy Murray were to compete how far would he make it?
Todd Martin (2:25 PM)
Ryan: I think Murray would have been a realistic prospect to be in the quarters to play Roddick. He would have had to win several tough matches to get there though.
Sterling (West Virginia)
Do you think Roddick will lose a set before reaching Roger?
Todd Martin (2:26 PM)
Sterling: Yes. Gasquet is his toughest matchup so far and I suspect he will lose one set, but not the match.
Todd Martin (2:29 PM)
Chris Nugent: Hey there. As if I wouldn't remember you. Good to hear from you, thanks for the kind words, and take care.
Adi (Toronto)
I know how you respect and admire both Sampras and Federer, but given a second life at tennis, whose career and accomplishments would you like to have -Pete's or Roger's?
Todd Martin (2:32 PM)
Adi: Tough choice. It is hard to distinguish too much between their results, but I think Federer has for the last few years dominated more than Pete did in any one year. Now, dominating over the course of 7 years or so might prove to be a bigger challenge for Fed. I am partial to Roger's results on clay though. In a coin toss I would give Fed the nod.
Rick (Wyoming)
It looked like Mauresmo laid down and surrendered her match those last few games. It was like getting knocked out with a few hard blows in a boxing match.
Todd Martin (2:34 PM)
Rick: Maursesmo certainly didn't play her best, but when some people go off their game it can be a free fall. She doesn't have all her confidence back yet and she performed poorly in the end yesterday.
Sterling (West Virginia)
If Hewitt were to play Nadal, would nadal even be able to force a fifth set?
Todd Martin (2:35 PM)
Sterling: I would pick Nadal over Hewitt, but it is one of the matches I would most like to see. Without either being net rushers, it is a great contrast in styles.
Sterling (West Virginia)
Do you think Nadal will win another major (besides the French)?
Todd Martin (2:36 PM)
Sterling: Absolutely!!! He might win all of them before his career is through.
Adi (toronto)
Todd, thanks for your candid answer. But does that reflect where you stand on the GOAT debate between the two?
Todd Martin (2:38 PM)
Adi: I cannot stand the "GOAT" discussion. Pete, Roger, Laver, Budge, et al were the most dominant players of their eras. Nothing ever is going to happen that allows us to compare apples to apples.
Will (Louisiana)
Are you surprised that Venus beat Sharapova 6-1,6-3? Also can she get to the final?
Todd Martin (2:39 PM)
Will: Yes. I was very surprised by the score. I felt that Maria was a slight favorite, but was expecting a barn-burner, not a blowout. Venus has good chances to progress now, but has three tough matchces left to win it all.
Uncle Jesse (San Francisco)
I say throw out sets, ann play first to 21 games, win by 2. That way, the winner wins more games.
Todd Martin (2:47 PM)
Uncle Jesse: 21 games doesn't prevent one player from winning more points though. The scoring system does a lot for the sport. There is no lead insurmountable which makes for a lot of mental challenges for the players. It is a very psychological game and I like the way the score highlights those strengths or weaknesses in all players.
Carol - Livermore CA
Todd...do you think Agassi will join the senior tour soon ?
Todd Martin (2:49 PM)
Carol: No, it wouldn't surprise me. It would be great to have him play some. The only bad thing is that he would come out and punish a lot of us other guys.
Sterling (West Virginia)
Todd, who was greater: Steffi Graf or Bjorn borg?
Todd Martin (2:51 PM)
Sterling: No possible way of comparing the two. Both outstanding players and dominant in their times.
Nate (Atlanta)
Hey Todd, how do you like Lleyton Hewitt's chances in upcoming touraments and Wimbledon?
Todd Martin (2:52 PM)
Nate: I like Hewitt's game. He stands a good chance of making it further into Wimbledon, but the hard courts of the summer don't suit him nearly as well.
Sterling (West Virginia)
Todd, do they still do the US Open series? I need something to watch in the summer besides baseball and golf.
Todd Martin (2:55 PM)
Sterling: Yes, the US Open Series will be making the usual stops.
Karen - Hudson, MA
Todd, will you consider playing WTT again? We loved having you on the Lobsters last season.
Todd Martin (2:55 PM)
Karen: No WTT for me this summer. Always like being in Boston, but can't do it this year.
Daniel (Cleveland)
Todd, what is tougher for Nadal, the mental exhaustion from the Soderling match or the physical challenge ahead?
Todd Martin (2:56 PM)
Daniel: He should be able to bounce back. This guy is one of a kind mentally and physically.
Adrian (the great white north)
Todd, is hingis done? somehow i don't see her challenging for any of the slams anymore? how would you rank these ladies for the all time list - hingis, serena, venus and justine?
Todd Martin (2:58 PM)
Adrian: Hingis is still a great player, but seems to struggle matching the athleticism and strength of the best women.
Maher (Bahrain)
Todd, in 1994 you won Queens defeating Sampras in 2 sets in the final. What was different in the semifinals of Wimbledon of the same year where you lost to Sampras?
Todd Martin (3:00 PM)
Maher: I played great against Pete in the final and he walked off the court and didn't seem to sweat it one bit. He was much more prepared for what I was going to throw at him two weeks later. Generally speaking, he was a better player and I needed to work at optimum production to beat him - that did not happen often.
Daniel (Cleveland)
Todd, do you think Nadal needs the sun to come out and dry out the courts so his ball bounces, or is he always a threat.
Todd Martin (3:01 PM)
Daniel: It will help him if the conditions dry out a bit. However, I like his chances regardless, but there are several players from the bottom half that can make it to the final.
Todd Martin (3:01 PM)
Happy Independence Day to all. Enjoy the holiday and talk to you again tomorrow.
Wimbledon Moderator (3:07 PM)
We'll be back on Thursday with Greg Garber at 1 ET and Todd Martin at 2 ET!
Wimbledon Moderator (12:45 PM)
Greg Garber will be here at 1 ET! Keep your questions coming!
Greg Garber (1:02 PM)
Greetings, ftennis fans. Greg Garber here to answer your questions. Of course, it's raining again. But officials are hoping to get a few hours of play in at the end of the day, perhaps starting play again within the hour. Federer and Roddick both have quarterfinal matches in play...
ali (saudi arabia, jeddah)
i wish players to increase the volume of complaint against nadal's really slow and boring process between points.what do you think?
Greg Garber (1:05 PM)
Ali: Yes, he is ponderously slow between points, but the players don;t complain -- at least out loud and on the court. It's a rhythm thing. I counted on one of Novak Djokovic's service games and he bounced the ball 19 times! Wouldn't that annoy you?
Kevin Cushman/Sedona AZ
Having the men's bottom half of the draw scheduled to play 4 matches in 4 days (if the rains ever subside) is really lame when all the All England Club had to do was allow play on the middle Sunday to catch up. The players say Wimbledon is their favorite tournament, yet everyone is complaining about the rain delays. Well, let's face it; it rains alot in England. If The All England Club doesn't see fit to change their rules about playing on the middle Sunday, then these two weeks might be a good time for everyone to take a summer break, because, as you know, the season is too long anyway, so why not skip Wimbledon if common sense can't prevail?Skipping only one Wimbledon would make a strong statement. Of course, the top 50 men and women would pretty much all have to agree to do it.
Greg Garber (1:09 PM)
Kevin: They'll never boycott Wimbledon. It's the tournament with the greatest history and tradition and we're seeing the downside of all that tradition. Yes, playing the middle Sunday would have had them csaught up on the men's side. It's interesting that -- finally -- they capitulated on the roof (due over centre Court in 2009). Maybe they'll come around on this point, too. The London Times ran an editorial today suggesting that they play matches on the middle Sunday and call it "People's Sunday," like the Monday final won by Goran Ivanisevic in 2001.
Alane (Dallas, TX)
Hey, I have been following Ana Ivanovic for a while. With all the teenagers, is she the one who eventually emerges?
Greg Garber (1:11 PM)
Alane: So far, you'd have to say yes. Vaidisova was serving for her third different Grand Slam semfinal and she failed the gut-Czech. Ivanovic has now reached the final at Roland Garros and the semis here at Wimbledon. That's quite an achievement for a 19-year-old
Lexi (DC)
Howdy, is Nicole Vaidisova ever going to take it to the next level. She seems to have game but nice choke job today.
Greg Garber (1:12 PM)
Lexi: See the previous answer. Vaidisova lost the last four games of the match...
Richard (FL)
Nadal has had some close calls. Is this tournament practically over? It looks like Mr. Federer is running away back to Switzerland with the platter.
Greg Garber (1:14 PM)
Richard: Not so fast. After all the talk of Federer's advantage in having five days off, it may be working against him now. Rafa is back at his flat chilling out on PlayStation, while the world No. 1 is gripping in the locker room, serving at 5-all, deuce against Juan Carlos Ferrero, who doesn't seem too frightened.
Rebecca, Durham
Does Lleyton Hewitt have one more slam left? I would say no, but my brother thinks one day, Federer will twist an ankle and Nadal's wedgy will be so high he will lose, leaving Hewitt to win again.
Greg Garber (1:17 PM)
Rebecca: That's a question I ask myself every Slam. He had some good results coming in, and he loves the grass here as a former champion, but he just couldn't get over the top against Djokovic today. His record in tie-breakers this year is gnarly 2-10 -- very unHewitt-like.
Sara, Switzerland
Hi Mr. Garber, can you tell me your favorite Wimbledon match of all time?
Greg Garber (1:19 PM)
Sara: How about the one they show on the BBC every time it rains over here (you can do the mathon that one). 1980: Borg over John McEnroe, winning 8-6 in the fifth. Crazy stuff.
Marques
Hey, Nadal has played a couple long matches. Will Berdych beat him? Who's the favorite?
Greg Garber (1:20 PM)
Marques: According to Berdych, anyway, Berdych. he says the grass gives him an egde -- and Nadal agrees with him!
TiM (Pittsburgh)
ARe tennis players as bad in rituals as baseball players are?
Greg Garber (1:22 PM)
TiM: maybe worse than Nomar Garciappara, if you can believe it. Nadal is slow and does the, uh, adjustment between every point, not to mention the sock tug. Djokovic bounces the ball in double digits before each serve. It's all about routine.
dsdsads ,anaheim
venus vs henun??
Greg Garber (1:23 PM)
Caly: The way she's playing, Venus. Serena almost beat Henin at 50 percent yesterday.
Scott, Tampa
I like Marcos Baghdatis. But who do we compare him to Agassi? Um, I don't think so.
Greg Garber (1:25 PM)
Scott: I'd call him Andre Light. Enetertaining, a shot-maker. Today he had his own chorus way out on Court 13. There were probably only 500 people out there for a quality Grand Slam match.
Chris (Pennsylvania)
Do you think Djokovic can make it to the finals and play Federer?
Greg Garber (1:26 PM)
Chris: he's got a bit of an injury, so I'll say no. Nadal is still the choice, although Berdych could beat him.
Lucy (United States)
As a new fan to the game, sometimes I see a perfect serve and they stop it by saying "net, first service"? What is the meaning of that?
Greg Garber (1:27 PM)
Lucy: When the ball clips the top of the net, it's basically a do-over. If it happens on the first serve, you get two. If it happens on the second, you get one.
JR (Miami)
Why isnt Tennis so talked about anymore like it was 10 yrs ago.
Greg Garber (1:28 PM)
JR: same old suspects. Too many options on Internet, television, etc.
Paul (jacksonville, FL)
Greg, in watching the early stages of Federer and Ferrero, it seems that Ferrero has the goods to at least take a set here doesnt he? Is JC Ferrero close to his 2003 French Open-winning form?
Greg Garber (1:30 PM)
Paul" You are all over it. Ferrero, as you know, is at his best on clay, but remember he made the finals at the 2003 U.S. Open, losing to Andy Roddick. He looked extremely loose against Federer, while the four-time champ looked tentative. Be interesting to see how they both come out of this rain delay. Now tournament officials are hoping to get going in the next 45 minutes or so. or so they say.
chauncey (teaneck)
can Venus win Wimbolden?
Greg Garber (1:31 PM)
Chauncey: Of course. Before the tournament, Richard Williams said she'd probably win. We all thought he was crazy, but he might have been right.
Nikita (Boston)
It almost seems to me that Henin is overlooked in this Wimbledon, despite the fact that she's the reigning number one and consistently reaches the finals of all the Grand Slams. She may be untouchable at Roland Garros, but she's also has to be considered one of the best on all surfaces. Why do you think she is overlooked in favor of Serena, Venus, Sharapova, and others?
Greg Garber (1:33 PM)
Nikita: Henin has never been a big favorite with the press -- or her professional colleagues. Her will to win tends to obliterate everything else. The other three players you mention cut a higher world profile on many levels. With a win here, Henin would have the personal Grand Slam, something very few players ever achieve.
Mike (Winter Park, FL)
I believe that Berdych (esp after watching Nadal today) has an excellent shot to take out nadal, do you agree? And is Baghdatis now the favorite to come out of the bottom half?
Greg Garber (1:35 PM)
Mike: The bottom half is a horse race, eh? I don't think anyone would be shocked to see any of the four -- nadal, Berdych, Baghdatis or Djokovic -- come out of there. It won't matter, though, because Federer will be waiting for them.
Ryan, Los Angeles
If Venus takes her 4th wimbledon title (presumably over henin) would you rank her as one of the all time greats on grass?
Greg Garber (1:39 PM)
Ryan: In my mind, she already is. She's 49-7 here and a fourth title would move her ahead of other three-time champions like Chris Evert and Margaret Court.
Garrett (NC)
Greg, I heard some of the commentators comparing the way Roddick is playing this year's Wimbledon to the way Federer has plays (defensive tennis on their opponents serve and dominating their own). What's your take on that thought?
Greg Garber (1:40 PM)
Garrett: When you can serve like they can, it's a good play. Roddick has won 18 consecutive tie-breakers -- think about how crazy that is -- and can afford to be defensive on an opponent's serve and wait for that opening. If the opening comes, he knows he's got a great chance in a tie-breaker.
Tommy (Miami)
Greetings Greg, why does it seem that Baghdatis shows up for only a couple majors in a year and then seems to just tank in other tournaments? I love his personality and his game is top 5 caliber so what exactly stops him from being a consistent threat?
Greg Garber (1:44 PM)
Tommy: You raise a question that has dogged the experts the last few years. Here's a guy with all kinds of talent, and he's out in the second round at Indian Wells to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez? Out in Miami, second round, to Juan-Martin Del Potro? Out in the first round of Monte Carlo to Max "The Beast" Mirnyi? We'll see what he's made of on Friday against Djokovic.
Amit (Chennai India)
Hello Greg, I am here in the US visiting some relatives and watching (for the third time) the last 3 games of the Venus quarterfinal match (Ugh!)..Do you think Gasquet could take out Roddick on grass? He's been hyped as a potential champion for a long time but I feel that hes far too inconsistent (esp with service games) to win a big match right now.
Greg Garber (1:46 PM)
Amit: Gasquet, once a prodigy, has drifted into something of an under-achiever. He just turned 21 and he's failed to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament. he has a nice game, but I don't think he can hang with Roddick and that bullet serve.
Flemming (Copenhagen, Denmark)
On a scale from 1-10, how bad is it to watch Venus, Serena and Sharapova bec. of the screaming?
Greg Garber (1:47 PM)
Flemming: Actually, Venus was fairly sedate yesterday against Sharapova. I think she just screams when she needds a little boost. Put me down for a 4.
Brendan (Philadelphia)
When will the matches resume and do you see Roddick or Federer having any trouble?
Greg Garber (1:49 PM)
Brendan: At the rosk of sounding optimisitic, it appears to be clearing a bit. Federer, in particualr, needs to pull himself together. Both he and Roddick could drop a set. but that would be the extent of the damage.
Russ (Atlanta (the A))
What are the prospects for Sam Querrey? I saw him play Gaudio at last year's US Open and he looked like a clone of Tomas Berdych, am I off with that comparison or does he not possess that type of upside?
Greg Garber (1:51 PM)
Russ: He's going to be good, very good. He's a bit gangly, but that's understandable for a kid who's only 19. He won two matches at the Australian Open, but has had some bad luck in draws, facing Blake, Monfils, Federer, Davydenko and Haas. Check back in a year and he should be top 30...
Mark (Washington, DC)
Is there any serious consideration of John McEnroe's idea of slightly limiting racket technology? (the way pro baseball limits bats). I think 10% less speed would keep ballbangers out of most of the finals and allow all-around talents to dominate more often.
Greg Garber (1:52 PM)
Mark: Good idea, but I don't see it happening. It's easier to mess with the surface and the balls, as they have here at Wimbledon to slow things down that way.
Erich (CT)
At the moment who is your top 3 tennis players of all time? Does Federer get in there yet?
Greg Garber (1:53 PM)
Erich: I think it would be virtually unanimous if you ask anyone that he's in that top handful with Sampras, Borg and Laver.
Rob (Montana)
roddick will not win it all at wimbledon
Greg Garber (1:54 PM)
Rob: You are probably right. He's 1-13 against Federer, but you have to like his spirit and enthusiasm...
Kathleen (NY)
So, do you think the notorious points-chaser Jankovic will realize she may have played too much??
Greg Garber (1:56 PM)
Kathleen: Good observation. She may, technically, have accumulated the most points this year, but she sure looked tired in losing to Marion Bartoli. I'm still not sure how that happened. She probably isn't either.
Jane , Houston, Tx.
I have an answer to question to question about roger and Pete sampras. when the great Laver and budge won the grand slams. they played on 2 surfaces. roger and Pete played on 3 surfaces. I do not think that if they did not win the french thqat disqualifies them as the great players. what do you think
Greg Garber (1:57 PM)
Jane: yes, this is the argument you can make for the two more modern players. Another factor is the depth of the game, which is unprecedented.
Joyce (San Bernardino, CA)
Has Venus ever played Ana Ivanovic? if they did what is their head-head matchup score?
Greg Garber (1:59 PM)
Joyce: They've played twice, with Venus winning both times, in 2004 and 2006.Must go now, folks. Please welcome in the esteemed Todd Martin. Check back in tomorrow at 1 PM EST.
Paul (Houston)
What does Nadal need to do to get a bigger serve? It baffles me that a guy as strong as he is could have a serve that qualifies merely as somewhat above average. I mean, if he developed a better serve, he would seriously be almost impossible to beat (not that he isn't already!)
Todd Martin (2:00 PM)
Hello to all. You too Mr. Garber if you are still there. Wimby is making progress slowly but surely.
Todd Martin (2:01 PM)
Paul: Nadal's serve continues to improve. Speed is only part of it. He is lefty, accurate and consistent. It will continue to get bigger as he goes and he will always use it well.
Jeff (Indianapolis, IN)
Will they play both of the men's semi's on Saturday? Or the top half tomorrow and the bottom on Saturday? (considering the rain lets up today)
Todd Martin (2:02 PM)
Jeff: They will do everything they can to have matches played the same day as their next opponent's matches are played. Both semis will be played on the same day...whenever that is.
Jeff (Chicago, IL)
Todd -- A non-Wimbledon question, but one my friends and I have discussed for quite a while. When compiling a list of the top 10 American males of the Open era (U.S. born, so Lendl doesn't count), we've reached a consensus on the top 9. The order can obviously be debated, but it's: Sampras, Agassi, McEnroe, Connors, Ashe, Courier, Change, Roddick, Stan Smith. But who's No. 10 -- Roscoe Tanner or Vitas Gerulaitis, who both won Australian Open titles and reached the finals in other Slams, or ... Todd Martin, who reached two Slam finals and never failed to answer the bell come Davis Cup time.
Todd Martin (2:04 PM)
Jeff: Never had considered that question before. There is also Brian Gottfried, James Blake, and probably a few others I have left out. Could do the spineless thing and suggest a substantial list of tied for 10th.
Cire (Los Angeles)
Hi Todd, in theory Wimby should produce the most one-dimensional champions of the 4 Slams because the surface caters to big serves or players who have 1 huge weapon in their arsenal. Isn't it ironic then, that most of the one-off champions have come at the French, where you could argue that clay, more than any other surface, pushes the limits of tennis attrition and requires the most well-rounded arsenal?
Todd Martin (2:07 PM)
Cire: Grass and Clay are the unique surfaces out there. There are, however, several more GREAT clay courters out there than there are grass courters. Plus, grass is becoming more and more an all-courters surface. Look at Murray, Djokovic, Baghdatis and none have HUGE weapons, rather are solid all the way through, play good offense, defense, and move great.
Keith (Ethopia)
Do you think Roddick has a chance against Federer?
Todd Martin (2:09 PM)
Keith: They both have to get by their quarterfinals, but I like Andy's chances more than in the past. His willingness to attack more readily increases his odds, but Federer still is the favorite.
Christian Columbus, OH
Will Gustavo Kuerten every play at a top level again?
Todd Martin (2:12 PM)
Christian: I don't believe so. It is awfully difficult to come back effectively from his injury, plus his game was based on being able to set up and dominate from the middle of the court. The other guys have more firepower and defend much better than just a few years ago.
Cire (Los Angeles)
On the women's side, does Bartoli have any chance of lifting the trophy on Sunday?
Todd Martin (2:12 PM)
Cire: I would not expect her to get by Henin. If she does she still would be a big underdog in the final.
Wes (NYC)
Todd, I saw you in '01 engaged in a practice tiebreak against Sebastien Grosjean at the US Open, it looked like he would be a really fun guy to hang out with... who are some of the more popular players on the tour? And is Soderling really as disliked as Nadal implied?
Todd Martin (2:14 PM)
Wes: Sebastian is a great guy. He is very French, but has embraced living in the US and appreciates our culture. Most of the guys get along very well. Of course, there are always run-ins with others, Nadal/Soderling is a case in point.
Mike (St Louis)
I read something interesting the other day in the UK newspaper The Independent, talking about how Nicolas Kiefer worked with terminally ill children. It seems that a lot of people hate his combative on court style, but is he actually a nice guy/liked off the court?
Todd Martin (2:16 PM)
Mike: I have always had a good relationship with Nicolas. There are probably guys who don't like the way Kiefer competes, but the best way to deal with that is to beat him. The only thing is, he is a tough nut to crack.
Mario - San Francisco
Todd...I'm curious what is the secret ingredient to take players to the next level...if I look at James/Marty they have all the tools...and than you see a Djokovic which all of a sudden raises his level this year...is it really all about confidence ?
Todd Martin (2:19 PM)
Mario: There is no secret ingredient! Hard work, patience, persistence, a positive attitude, and guts galore are what is necessary, and sometimes that still isn't enough. That is when faith comes in and perspective to accept that you have put your best forward and can't do anymore than that.
Meredith (Miami,FL)
I didn't get to see the beginning of Federer vs. Ferrerro. How did Fed look after his week off?
Todd Martin (2:20 PM)
Meredith: Fed sounds like he played well to start. I only saw 2 games and he was very flat. He lost those two games to let Ferrero back to 5-5. He will recoup and dominate from here...I think.
Clay, Wyncote PA
Hi Todd, I've beeen following Maria Sharapova matches at Wimbledon. You feel that she's overrated? She doesn't play well against the other top rated players.
Todd Martin (2:22 PM)
Clay: No, I think she is a great player and it is important not to confuse commercial success with "critical acclaim". She is one of the best female players, but is vulnerable when someone can handle her pace.
Carol (San Diego, CA)
I am an Ivanovic follower I love her demeanor on the court and the way she plays the game. If, I know it's a huge if, she gets past Venus what would be her chances in the finals? Which Serbian will be ranked the highest by the end of the season Jankovic, Ivanovic or Djokovic?
Todd Martin (2:24 PM)
Carol: I like Ivanovic's chances. She was just in the final in Paris so she might be more prepared for the occasion. She has her hands full with Venus who is playing great.
Todd Martin (2:25 PM)
Carol: Also, I like Jankovic to be the highest ranked player. With Venus and Serena not playing a full schedule it will allow for others to fill their spots in the draw.
Terry (Key Biscayne)
Do you think this is a temporary resurgence for JC Ferrero or is he going to get back to a top 10 level for good? I think tennis has missed his game the past few years and he could be one guy that could actually threaten Nadal on clay if he's playing his best
Todd Martin (2:27 PM)
Terry: Ferrero is back to playing very good tennis. He has been improving and playing better over the last 18 months or so and this result at Wimby will do wonders for his ranking and confidence. Look for him to be a bit of a factor on the summer hardcourts.
Quincy (Chicago)
Hey Todd, don't you feel that Nadal's game (as compared to his attitude/mental game) is really underrated? It seems that everyone always talks about his attitude and fitness before anything else in his game? Yet I think that his forehand is one of the three best in the world, his backhand is solid and improving, his speed and quickness among the best, and his serve an improving weapon. Your thoughts?
Todd Martin (2:29 PM)
Quincy: I do not feel that Nadal's game is underrated. He is a great tennis player straight through. What distinguishes him is his heart, head, and legs. Without his head and heart he would have lost to Kendrick last year and Soderling this year.
Carl (Lansing, MI)
Todd, did you play much doubles? What do you need to excel at that besides being good at tennis and communication?
Todd Martin (2:33 PM)
Carl: I never played too much doubles. One year I probably played a little more than half of the tournaments that I played singles in. A good doubles player needs great reflexes, fearlessness, and great skill when the ball is to them.
Kaitlin (Houston, Tx)
Back at the French open there was a comment made about Federer and as to whether he can really be considered one of the greatest players of all time if he never wins the French open. Do you think he can still be considered one of the greatest if he never wins the French open?
Todd Martin (2:35 PM)
Kaitlin: I would be hard pressed to say that Federer needs to win the French. He has sustained a level of play on ALL surfaces that maybe has never been matched.
Heath (Albany, NY)
What is the key to Venus' success and turnaround? I remember just a couple years ago it looked as though she was ready to retire and now it looks as though she has her old form back and couple possibly take her sister.
Todd Martin (2:36 PM)
Heath: Two things: She believes in herself even more when she walks onto a grass court, and she has been very focused from what I have seen. Practicing hard and a lot before the tourney.
Mario - San Francisco
Todd...from your perspective what does it mean a player is mentally tough ?
Todd Martin (2:37 PM)
Mario: Mentally tough to me is the ability to be unaffected by what has happened in the match, but to be aware of what has happened in order to make proper adjustments tactically.
Mike (Fresno)
Would Venus become extremely unpopular with men around the world if she managed to knock out sharapova and ivanovic in the same tourney? And on a more serious note, could you take off your "unbiased" hat for a sec and tell us who would you want to see win on each side?
Todd Martin (2:38 PM)
Mike: Who do I want to see win? Venus and Andy. I think they both have a good chance too. Venus better than Andy.
Joe (NYC)
Hey Todd, I was wondering if you have tried any of the new racquet "technologies" and how has it changed the game?
Todd Martin (2:39 PM)
Joe: I am still using the same technology that I switched to back in '94. The advancements that are most pronounced have been in the polyester strings. I like them and they help me produce more spin without taking pace off the ball.
Meredith (Miami, FL)
In last month's GQ, there was an interview with Nadal and the writer really had some harsh things to say about Nadal. The writer said he was given no access to Nadal without his PR guy approving questions and answering them. The writer also thought Nadal's style of game was terrible for tennis. I completely disagree. What do u think?
Todd Martin (2:40 PM)
Meredith: Didn't see the article, but regardless, I think highly of Nadal and disagree with any claim that he is anything but great for our sport.
Joel (Chesterfield, VA)
Todd...Who is the next great American we can expect to see come up? I know we have come great players with Andy, James, and Marty, but just looking ahead.
Todd Martin (2:41 PM)
Joel: Hard to say as I don't have great familiarity with lots of the juniors. I like Sam Querrey's game though and I believe he will do well in the long run.
Adi (Toronto)
Todd, with a possible Venus-Justine final, who do you think will emerge on top considering that Justine has only defeated Venus once in her life.
Todd Martin (2:44 PM)
Adi: I like Venus' chances considering her form. She fought through some tough matches and has hit her stride. She and Serena are still the best when on their games and confident.
Mike (St Paul)
Todd, according to the Wimbledon web site they have abandoned play for today.. does this even the playing field now for the men's draw? Although the bottom half had to play additional match today, both sides will still have to play 3 matches in three days?
Todd Martin (2:45 PM)
Mike: Yes it does level it a bit, but top half still has the better end of the bargain.
Mario - San Francisco
Todd...do you think in the future we will see more special coaching...ie Djokovic hired Woodforde to improve his volleys ?
Todd Martin (2:47 PM)
Mario: If Djokovic continues to have great success...yes! There is a good place in the game for consultants or teachers. I always felt it beneficial to have someone that didn't see me on a daily basis to assess where my development was.
Cire (Los Angeles)
Todd, was Kobayashi's streak as the world's dominant hot-dog eating champ as impressive as Federer's streak if he wins 5 this year to match Borg?
Todd Martin (2:47 PM)
Cire: Almost. Great run. Sad to see it end!
Daniel (San Francisco)
Hi Todd,People often seem to cite how close Nadal was to winning the title last year but many forget the one set he did win vs Federer in the '06 Wimbledon finals was a tiebreak. It doesn't matter that Nadal almost won another set-fact is fact he lost in four sets similar to the way Fed lost at Rolad Garros (Twice.) I'm also curious to get your opinion on the best ever debate. I believe at the rate he is winning Grand Slam events Roger will be considered the greatest male player of all time. He wins everything except the French and basically loses to a guy completely unbeatable on clay. Not even Borg who waltzed through draws at the French year after year could destroy every opponent he faced. Yes he won, which is all that matters but Federer is up against something nobody has ever seen on clay. Until Nadal wins other Grand Slam events he's a great player and maybe the best clay-courter of them all. Based on his type of game and the demands on his body it could be difficult for Nadal to reamin healthy another five straight years. Thanks
Todd Martin (2:51 PM)
Daniel: Nadal was close last year. If he makes it to a fifth there is no telling how the guy on the other side of the net is going to react. Greatest player of all time is a discussion not a decision. We should all praise every player in this discussion for being dominant amongst their peers.
Beatrice, TX
Nalbandian has not looked the same to me since he had the ab injuries. Oddly, I feel the same about Venus when she injured her stomach at Wimby and then played Kim Clijsters anyway. What is the word on Nalbandian? Is it injury related, laziness, mental or what? I am a big Safin and Nalbandian fan and I am ready to help pay for a therapist...too much wasted talent!
Todd Martin (2:53 PM)
Beatrice: It always is a bit mental. No matter who the player is, they can always get better mentally. Both are still young and capable. I suspect they both have a good run in them over the next couple years.
Steve (Rockville, MD)
Todd...with play called for Thursday, will this force a scheduling similar to the US Open, where the men's semis will be played along with the women's final?
Todd Martin (2:55 PM)
Steve: I would imagine they will still try to finish on schedule. Meaning, every player left in both singles draws will play everyday from here on. I would think they might play one men's semi on court 1 on Saturday.
Adi (Toronto)
Todd, what ever happened to the great russion revolution? Dementieva and Petrova are at best question marks as contenders, Kuznetsova and Sharapova looked tired against Venus, and the other one that won the french open whose name escapes me has totally disappeared. What gives? Are seeing the end of the 'ovas
Todd Martin (2:57 PM)
Adi: Myskina is probably who you are forgetting. Sharapova and Kuznetsova ran into a buzz saw named Venus this year. Both looked good up until then. Petrova has been the disappointment for me. I thought she might be able to make a bigger impact than she has.
henry la ca
who is more capable of beat federer nadal or djokovic
Todd Martin (2:59 PM)
Henry: I would think Nadal has a better shot. Fed struggles with him and his "leftyness". One problem is that Nadal might seriously struggle to get to finals...or the semis.
Todd Martin (2:59 PM)
Chat more tomorrow gang. Enjoy the tennis tomorrow morning.
Wimbledon Moderator (3:01 PM)
Thanks Todd! Todd will be back again tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET, preceded by our team of Greg Garber and Bonnie DeSimone at 1 p.m. ET. Stop by then for some more tennis chat!
Wimbledon Moderator (9:15 AM)
Friday's action at Wimbledon is already underway. Stop on by to chat later today!
Wimbledon Moderator (9:18 AM)
Greg Garber and/or Bonnie DeSimone will be by at 1 p.m. ET today, followed by Todd Martin at 2 p.m. ET! Don't miss it!
Bonnie DeSimone (1:00 PM)
And we're live from the sunny All-England Club, applying SPF 45 and wearing floppy hats. Go for it, folks.
Brian (Brooklyn)
Is this the best Roddick has played going into a match with Federer? His serve has been tremendous this tournament.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:05 PM)
Brian, Andy seems extremely relaxed, playing unpressured. I'm writing to advance what looks like a fairly sure matchup tomorrow. As you may know, Andy is 1-13 vs. Roger and has lost to him three times here. I'd like to see a good tense match.
Franklin D. Ferguson (Culver City, CA)
What happened to James Blake, man? He's so deferential on the Court, always complimenting people and applauding great shots as they fly by him. Has he just lost his edge, or do you think that being too much of a gentleman is working against Jamesy?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:10 PM)
Don't be fooled into thinking Blake's sportsmanship is a sign of softness. No one who made the comeback he did is soft. I think in many ways it's a lot harder to figure out how to stay in the top 10 as it is to get there, and James has always been somewhat of a late bloomer. I think it's way too soon to say he's maxxed out.
Mike (St. Louis)
I realize that this is by far her best surface, but based on recent play, could Venus be making a comeback as one of the World's top players?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:12 PM)
That will depend on her health and her interest level. Right now it's really striking to watch her play -- kind of like getting in the Wayback Machine.
Eric (NYC)
Forget Moya/Henman...the Novak/Marcos match is the match of the tournament! Novak has had endurance problem before, Do you think Novak can take Nadal?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:14 PM)
Our crack research staff (meaning Garder) is trying to determine where this ranks in the longest matches ever at Wimbledon. It was a great one. Both those guys are such appealing characters. As for Djokovic's endurance, some of that was a respiratory problem that he addressed with sinus surgery in the off-season. Granted, he was on court a lot longer than Nadal today, but you can argue the last few days have been tougher on Nadal... he had to sleep on a missed match point for two nights.
Brian (Brooklyn)
I know Henin is #1 in the world, but with the way Venus is playing she would still have to be considered the favorite right?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:16 PM)
Venus. But let's not overlook the Dancing Bartoli.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:17 PM)
That's what we've dubbed the fearless cherub...
Meredith (Miami,FL)
What do you think of Nadal's chances of ending up #1 by the end of the year? Fed has lots of points to defend.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:21 PM)
Still grim.
Swap (Philly)
Who is going to be showing the 2 men's semis tommorow? Is ESPN going to show it from 6am - 9am and then let NBC take over?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:22 PM)
Fairly certain NBC has the whole deal from now on.
Mitch, OH
What would happen if both Serena and Venus pulled out of Fed Cup? Would USA be allowed to name replacements?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:23 PM)
Yes, Mitch... My guess is that Venus will play and Serena is questionable. I'd love to hear opinions on who you think the replacement should be in that event. candiates include Meilen Tu, Meghann Shaugnessy and Laura Granville.
Eric (NYC)
In continuation of the last question. About Nadal's "tough last few days"...I think it is scary how well he played from 3rd set vs Youzhny and on...If i am betting man, I think my money is on Nadal in the semi. A-Rod on the other hand looked very good...I sure hope he will give Roger a tough match.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:27 PM)
Can't disagree, Eric. For those of you wondering how Federer whiled away the time on his extended holiday... he said he practiced an hour a day and went into London a couple of times. We think he should have gone to Spain to see Switzerland in the America's Cup.
Mitch, OH
I think Tu should be named. Or maybe Davenport could come back :)Also, thank you. I have enjoyed reading and chatting on my lunch hour the past few weeks. So, do you think Vaidisova will ever win a slam? I am starting to see her as a good player who make sneak into a final or 2, but never win the big titles.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:28 PM)
Vaidisova will probably have to vary her game in order to make progress, even though she's risen quite quickly being a baseline player.
Michael (Marietta, GA)
Why are the big power servers not doign well. Roger, Nadal, and Henin are all out of the top 10 in aces, but all are in the semis in almost every glam slam on a regular basis.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:30 PM)
Interesting question. Some players with huge serves wind up being overly reliant on them and don't develop the rest of their games.
Ja (Toronto)
What odds would you give me on Roddick beating Federer in the semi's?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:31 PM)
I'm turning you over to the capable hands of Greg Garber. Back at you tomorrow. BD
Bonnie DeSimone (1:32 PM)
ja: He's got to GET to the semis first. He just dropped the third set to Gasquet and is fighting like crazy to win his serve in the first game - Gasquet has had a few break points.
Adam (syracuse,ny)
Seems like if Andy ever wants to beat Federer he has to play Sampras ball instead of sittin on the baseline exchanging forehands with Federer all day.
Greg Garber (1:34 PM)
Adam: Roddick certainly doesn;t have the volleying skills of Sampras but he DOES need to be more aggressive against Federer. He has improved in the last few years, but the more the court here looks like Roland Garros (slow, slow, slow) the better chance Federer has.
JB (MD)
Greg, I just asked this of Bonnie, now I'll ask you: has anyone ever defeated BOTH Williams sisters in route to a Grand Slam title (which is what Justine would have to do if she can pull out the third set today)?
Greg Garber (1:39 PM)
JB: Just buzzed through the record book and can;t find an example. You're right, it would be quite an acheivement. Still, she needs to get by Bartoli (currently down 0-1).
Mitch, OH
Hi Greg, What is your prediction for Sharapova's US Open performance? Her psyche must be a bit scarred after a few beatdowns this year.
Greg Garber (1:42 PM)
Mitch: Well, it hasn't been her year. There have been the well-publicized losses to Serena in the Australian and in Miami and here to Venus. She'll nurse the shoulder and hope to be physically sound. Mentally, as you suggest, it could be tough.
Jon(Denver, CO)
When was the last time a woman seeded 23 or higher won Wimbeldon?
Greg Garber (1:44 PM)
Jon: never. Venus, at No. 23, is the lowest seed, but that's a shaky seed. Marion Bartoli, at No. 18, could be the real surprise. She's up 2-0 and at deuce in te third set...
Mike (Jacksonville)
Greg, I'm stuck at "work" and can't see the Henin match.. what exactly is Bartoli doing to have taken control of this match? Did anyone at all see this coming???
Greg Garber (1:46 PM)
Mike: She's crowding the baseline and not giving Henin and room. By taking short, precise swings at the ball, she's placing it deep in the corners. She's a serve away from being up 3-0...
Ben, MI
If the court is playing so slow, would that give Nadal a sizable advantage, when playing Federer assuming they meet in the final?
Greg Garber (1:48 PM)
Ben: Naturally. Since Wimbledon has become Roland Garros, Nadal will feel right at home. See notebook story soon to be posted. Everything seems to be going Rafa's way after a rough start.
Adi (Toronto)
Hi Greg, Djokovic is looking more and more like the real deal. Has he ever played Nadal on grass? Who do you see winning that match? Djokovic surely won't be a pushover against the Fed having taken a match from him earlier this year.
Greg Garber (1:52 PM)
Adi: Never before on grass. It's 4-1 Nadal for the careers, but only 1-1 on hardcourts. Djokovic won't have much left after today. he culd barely talk after going four hours and 59 minutes against Baghdatis.
Greg Garber (1:53 PM)
Henin update: bartoli just won the third game of the third set to go up 3-0. This would be a massive upset.
Paul (Winter Park, FL)
Greg, from what youre saying about Nadal, it seems then (ironically) that the very same slowness of the court that will help Federer vs Roddick (if Roddick advances) will hurt his chances vs. Nadal???
Greg Garber (1:54 PM)
Paul: I think that's fair to say.
Adi (Toronto)
With Nadal's sustained great play on grass, is it fair to say that aside from being the best clay-court player, he is also the second best grass-court player? Somehow, with the slowed grass court, even Roddick will have a very tough time against Nadal.
Greg Garber (1:55 PM)
Adi: I think you can just say Nadal is the second-best all-around player in the world. He's come a long, long way in a few years on grass.
Greg Garber (1:56 PM)
Update: Two break points for Bartoli against Henin, serving at 0-3...
Greg Garber (1:57 PM)
Now: it's 4-0 Bartoli...
Carl (Lansing, MI)
Greg...why do you look so angry in your picture?
Greg Garber (1:57 PM)
Carl: Dude, I'm the Ugly American.
James (Brighton, MA)
4-0 Bartoli - hard to believe. If she advances, how does she match up against Venus?
Greg Garber (1:58 PM)
James: I'll believe anything right now...
Greg Garber (1:59 PM)
FYI: Roddick has his hands full with Gasquet. It's 4-all in the fourth and he's serving at 40-30.
Greg Garber (2:00 PM)
Thanks for chatting. Clear the way for Todd Martin...
Todd Martin (2:01 PM)
Hi everyone. Novak Djokovic proved how tough a competitor he is today and Nadal still stands to punish him tomorrow.
J Shaky (MI)
More of a hypothetical question than anything . . . but how fantastic was that Djokovic/Baghdatis match? That one must have been pretty special (I couldn't watch being at work and all . . . if it was even televised).
Todd Martin (2:04 PM)
J Shaky: The Djok/Baghd match was outstanding. Both competed bravely. Djok struggled physically and stepped up his offensive game in the fifth. He won't have much left in the tank for Nadal tomorrow, regrettably...I don't think.
brent (mississippi)
do u think that Roddick or Nadal have a chance of beating roger Federer because federer is one of the all time greats on grass courts.(my opinion)
Todd Martin (2:06 PM)
Brent: Your opinion concurs with everybody's opinion that I have heard. Regardless of how good he is, Nadal and Roddick both have a chance against Fed. All it takes is one good day. Ferrero showed us all their is at least a tiny sliver of vulnerability in Fed's game.
Mike (St. Louis)
Everyone is in shock about Bartoli. but look at her 1st serve %...86%? That's pretty ridiculous. Do you see Bartoli continuing this type of play in the future or will she be a Myskina-type flash in the pan?
Todd Martin (2:09 PM)
Mike: First serve percentage can be misleading. Bartoli, I don't think I would recognize if she knocked on my door. She is obviously a great player and one that might be a Wimbledon champion in the next couple days. I would expect her to maintain a pretty high level of form, especially if she wins the whole thing.
Meredith (Miami, FL)
If Bartoli closes it out, we will have 6 different finalist in the 3 women's majors this year. Does this show the depth in the women's game?
Todd Martin (2:14 PM)
Meredith: Good stat. I think it says more for women's tennis . Years ago, it seemed that there were only a few that could contend for a major now there are several. I still wish that the Williams sisters had more energy for the sport so as to be a more consistent factor in the slams.
James (Brighton, MA)
Hey Todd, big fan here...love the battles you had with Pete back in the day. Does Novak have any chance at all against Rafa tomorrow after today's marathon match? How would you rate this match if both players were well-rested?
Todd Martin (2:16 PM)
James: You must be a huge Pete fan if you liked watching me play him, because I never (almost never) beat him. I don't see Nadal losing to Djokovic. He should be significantly taxed from the last two days, plus Nadal is better still at this point.
Adi (Toronto)
Major upset for Bartolli! Has she ever played Venus? Not to diminish her accomplsiment, but does she even have a slight chance against Venus? I can already see the Willliams patriarch smiling ever so widely.
Todd Martin (2:19 PM)
Adi: I don't know about history, but if this young woman is good enough to get this far, she is good enough to beat anyone. I would still pick Venus to win. The atmosphere will be even more intimidating tomorrow.
IGC (Virginia)
Todd, do you agree with Greg's comments saying that the grass has slowed down so much that Nadal may have an edge over Federer if they were to meet on the final?I am a Nadal fan, but I still think that Federer is a 5:1 favorite on grass.
Todd Martin (2:22 PM)
IGC: Hard for me to agree with Greg on this one. The court is significantly slower, but still low bouncing and favors Federer.
Megan, Indianapolis
Todd, it was a pleasure watching you play, esp at the US Open. Question: This seems silly, but why do Roddick and a few other guys bunch up their shirts around the shoulders? The shirt always falls back into place within a couple swings. Does this have any purprose?
Todd Martin (2:23 PM)
Megan: They are trying to get comfortable before the point. Once it starts I don't think they feel it as much.
Mike (Jacksonville FL)
Ok Roddick lost the 4th set now too!! Who has the edge in the 5th set? Does this long match basically guarantee Fed's chances to get to the finals
Todd Martin (2:25 PM)
Mike: I still like Roddick. He is not relying on shot making, but playing tennis straightforward. He will put more consistent pressure on Gasquet to play under pressure.
Darryl (Philadelphia, PA)
I know everyone wants to see Roddick finally overcome his Fed-phobia, but to be honest with you, I've had enough. I'm glad they're in the same half of the draw that way I don't have to witness another snoozer/beat-down. I wanna see two guys in the final who are willing to die to be the last man standing. I thought I might see it this year with Baghdatis. I was hoping to be treated to a Rafa/Bags semifinal followed by a monster showdown with Federer in the finals. There's still hope. Nothin would be sweeter than to see Rafa knock off Roger in back to back slams. Then we'd be guaranteed to see a fiesty/slightly pissed off Federer at the U.S. open
Todd Martin (2:28 PM)
Darryl: It would be great news for the sport to see Nadal beat Fed in final. Don't count Andy out yet. He stands a shot against Fed tomorrow...IF he can sneak by Gasquet.
Jim (Hartford)
Todd,Any thoughts on Sampras' latest criticism of the play at Wimbledon; how he continues to say he'd match up well with anyone there, with Federer, etc..all surrounding the lack of net play. I don't see why he continues to make comments like these..while retired? I mean, the balls are slower, the court slower; I don't know that Pete is in a position to be coming out and speaking like that. Your thoughts?
Todd Martin (2:31 PM)
Jim: I think if there were more players who volleyed and covered the net well, who also defended and attacked well from the back of the court Fed would be forced to be a different player on the grass. No matter how much slower conditions are I like someone with Pete's game still. If Pete is asked a question, I believe he has earned the right to answer it. Believe me, he is not hunting down the media to speak his mind.
Brett (Dallas,TX)
We all know Venus is playing the best tennis in the womens field right now. How long will the streak continue and can she rejoin the elite where she once was?
Todd Martin (2:32 PM)
Brett: Regardless of her ranking Venus is always part of the elite. Her ranking will only continue to go up if she commits to a more extensive schedule.
Adi (Toronto)
Another upset in the offing! Gasquet looks like a man on a mission! What does he have to do in this fifth deciding set to emerge on top. Somehow, all I can see is dwindling opportunity for another slam if he can't even get past Gasquet.
Todd Martin (2:36 PM)
Adi: Gasquet is on fire for sure. Andy needs to understand that his serve will dictate throughout this "advantage" set. If Gasquet misses a few first serves in teh same game there will be a huge crack in the door. Also, Andy needs to stop approaching to the forehand.
Carl (Lansing, MI)
The top 4 men might make the semis and the combine ranking of the 2 women's finalists is 41. I am not saying one is better than the other since both provide for compelling stories...just found that interesting.
Todd Martin (2:37 PM)
Carl: Tis interesting. It seems the shoe is now on the other foot. Of course, there has been an amazing amount of hard earned wins by most of the men's semifinalists.
Adam (syracuse,ny)
Continuation to Jims comment, What has happened to the serve and volley tennis? Used to be if you wanted to see baseline tennis you had to see the womens draw...or an Agassi match. Seems like the days of serve and volley went out the door with sampras, goran, etc
Todd Martin (2:38 PM)
Adam: There aren't many that still do, but there is still a place for it in the game.
Adam (syracuse,ny)
It's unfair to say Venus is the "lower seed" thus "upsetting" her way to the final. I'd take a healthy Venus/Serena any day of the week over anyone on the womens draw.
Todd Martin (2:39 PM)
Adam: More or less, I agree.
Jane, Las Vegas
Todd, it seems to me that people are underestimating the threat of pressure to Federer should he play Nadal in the final. June and early July have basically turned into a turf war between these two. Nadal defended his turf, dealing a blow to Federer mentally in the process, and now Federer has to defend his turf--knowing that Nadal is playing well on grass and that Borg's record is on the line. It seems to me that Federer is ripe for an upset in the final. Do you agree that the pressure is huge for Fed this year?
Todd Martin (2:44 PM)
Jane: Interesting point. I am not sure Roger has given us a reason to question his mental toughness and his ability to put losses behind him. The pressure is always huge on the best. It is just that they deal with it the best.
Tom (St Augustine)
Todd, dont you feel that every single time that Roddick plays Federer, people think that "This could be the time" and that he has improved something in his game enough that he has a chance? And then he always ends up losing anyway? Do you feel that sometimes our desire to see an American succeed at the highest level leads us to be somewhat idealistic/unrealistically hopeful about Roddick's chances esp against Federer?
Todd Martin (2:45 PM)
Tom: Yes. We are idealistic, but I don't know if anyone is saying this WILL be the time, rather they are saying this MIGHT be the time. I agree with that. Everytime might be the time. Andy has that much game.
AliBaba (Concord, NH)
Many of the commentators at the French Open noted Federer's inability to adjust his game and strategy as the match progressed (not moving in to take Nadal's serve sooner)for instance. In watching how both Williams'sisters effectively moved inside the baseline to return serve here at Wimbleton, do you foresee Federer being more flexible and making the kinds of adjustments against Nadal at Wimbledon that he's not made the last two years at Roland Garros?
Todd Martin (2:47 PM)
AliBaba: I don't believe that Roger will change. I am frustrated at times at his unwillingness to come forward, but he has gotten away with it enough to keep doing the same thing.
Ja (Toronto)
Darryl reminded me of something that I read after the french open. Someone here wrote something about how when he was younger Federer was just someone who was afraid of the big moment. It seems to me that he needs to be constantly reasuured that he is the best. What would losing a couple of slams do for his confidence. Any chance we can see a fall from grace from him??
Todd Martin (2:49 PM)
Ja: Fed will be able to take his lumps and come back strong. That being said, winning helps him keep winning.
omid (zurich)
Greetings Todd, I've got to disagree with you about the Gasquet Roddick match. Gasquet is hitting winners left and right, especially on the backhand side. Roddick on the other hand is waiting for Gasquet to make mistakes (defensive play) which is not happening. Roddick is not hitting outright winners from the baseline like he use to 2-3 years ago. WOW!!!!!! There goes another Gasquet backhand pass.
Todd Martin (2:52 PM)
Omid: Absolutely right about Gasquet hitting winners and all, but in pressure situations it is ultra difficult to thread needles. Mind you, your last sentence ended in "bachkhand PASS".
Beatrice, Dallas TX
Of all the up and coming young players, other than Nadal and Dkjovic, who do you think is destined for top 10, and what is your comment on Haas and Canas...can they make big runs this late in their career?
Todd Martin (2:53 PM)
Beatrice: Gasquet is about the same age. Berdych is young. I have my doubts about Monfils though. He seems to play extraordinarily defensive tennis, especially in his positioning. That is a tough way to become the best.
Todd Martin (2:54 PM)
Beatrice: Canas and Haas are both great players. Haas has every bit of game anyone could hope for, and Canas is as tenacious as they come. Those are both ingredients for tremendous success, regardless of their age.
Mike(Atlanta)
I'm getting kind of tired of Roddick playing for tiebreakers and/or one break of serve a set. It seems to me the effort isn't there everytime his opponent serves. He relys way too much on his cannon serve and it's just too much pressure for him to handle. Do you feel that this is at all true and that he will never challenge Federer or Nadal unless this is fixed?
Todd Martin (2:59 PM)
Mike: His effort is there. Often times there is a rhythm to a match that develops over time. Also, everyone knows how tough it is to break Andy so their focus is even better on their own serves.
Chris (Raleigh, NC)
Is the pressure that Roddick deals with really fair to him? He is widely regarded as American Tennis' only hope, and American's expect a lot out of there sports stars. Tennis is flooded with international talent from all corners of the world, and Roddick is one man from one little corner. Is it really fair to criticize him as an American athlete, because he hasn't recently beaten any of the other top guys lately?
Todd Martin (3:00 PM)
Chris: A few years ago it was utterly unfair as Andy hadn't accomplished that much, but now it is fair. Andy deals with it so well that I think it is fine for him.
Mike (San Francisco, CA)
If the Roddick/Gasquet match goes too much longer, who has more staying power? And does this mean an easy ride for Federer tomorrow, regardless of who wins?
Todd Martin (3:02 PM)
Mike: Gasquet has a huge mountain to climb to get back up for Federer tomorrow at noon. It is 8 o'clock pm now. Good luck tomorrow, but very well done today.
Todd Martin (3:02 PM)
More great stuff tomorrow. Enjoy and I will chat at 2 ET again.
Wimbledon Moderator (3:34 PM)
Thanks Bonnie, Greg, Todd! Our trio will be back Saturday for more Wimbledon chat, starting at 1 p.m. ET!
Michael (Marietta, GA)
Next USA man besides Roddick to win a grand slam and next USA woman to win a grand slam not named Williams
Greg Garber (12:59 PM)
Greetings, folks: Greg Garber back to chat after the women's finals and men's semis. FYI: Red Hot Chili Peppers rocking out at Wembley right now on BBC 1. Fire away...
Lenser (Georgeville)
Greg, you look like Conan O'Brien crossed with Sandman from Spider-man 3. Fair assessment?
Greg Garber (1:01 PM)
I'll take that a compliment...
Lisa (Florida)
I really think the past couple of years have opened the Williams' eyes a little bit as far as commitment and fitness levels are concerned. So with their newfound "epiphanies", can they be consistent contenders at every slam again?
Greg Garber (1:05 PM)
Lisa: I think age is working against them. Venus is 27 and Serena will turn 26 in September. For all their lack of focus and fitness, one of them has been to the Wimbledon final for seven of the last eight years. That's amazing. Still, both of them broke down physically here and the way they play the game (lots of power with less-than-precise footwork) tells me they probably only have another two or three years of viable Grand Slam possibilities...
omid (zurich)
Hello Greg, I enjoyed your recent article on Fed and Borg. Do you think Federer will ever have the type of confidence he has against guys like Roddick when he plays Nadal? Do you think he will attack more tomorrow, or will this be a replay of the French open final on grass? If Fed doesn't attack I think he is going to be in trouble tomorrow, what do you think?
Greg Garber (1:08 PM)
Omid: Thanks. I think his lack of confidence has more to do with clay than Nadal. From the beginning of the French Open final, Federer had bad body language. As he said today, grass rewards his flatter shots and he feels confident. He's won 53 straight matches on grass, which is ridiculous. I think he wins tomorrow in four. How about you?
Meredith (Miami,FL)
If Fed loses tomorrow on his own turf, will people view Rafa has the real #1 regardless of the point standings?
Greg Garber (1:14 PM)
Meredith: Great question. As we said here last year, if rafa wins at Wimbledon EVERYTHING changes. Federer owns grass, Nadal owns clay, as we have seen. Certainly, a four- or five-set match tomorrow will make the hardcourt season an interesting one. Nadal HAS improved his serve and has learned to flatten out his forehand on hard courts. As he says every time he's interviewed, "I'm only 21 years and one month."
Jason (Toronto, Ontario)
Andy Roddick received a lot of "This could be the time he beats Federer" hype coming his match against Gasquet. But a quick review shows that Gasquet was the first top 25 opponent he faced on grass this year, including the Queen's club tournament. In fact, Gasquet was the first top 25 opponent since the Rome tournament (and he lost that match too). Can we stop all the talk about the "BIG THREE" in men's tennis. There is only the "BIG TWO" with Federer and Nadal. Roddick is in the second tier and will likely soon be surpassed by Djokovic, Gasquet, et al.
Greg Garber (1:16 PM)
Jason: You are all over it. See the Federer-Borg story posted on Page 1. Federer and Nadal are so far ahead of the pack that the peleton has lost contact. Djokovic will be the No. 3 player at the end of the year, but I'm not sure about Gasquet. Roddick can be No. 4 with a good summer and US Open...
Michael (Marietta, GA)
Next USA man besides Roddick to win a grand slam and next USA woman to win a grand slam not named Williams. Donald Young is doing well in the boys singles here. How do you rank him.
Greg Garber (1:20 PM)
Michael: I'll take Sam Querrey and, for a lack of current profesisonal options, Madison Brengle. Brengle just advanced to the girls' junior final, while The Donald made it to the final against the top seed from Belarus. Young is playing his lst junior event here. He'll get a wildcard at the US Open, but I'm not sure how successful he'll be as a pro. When he won the Orange Bowl 16s at the age of 14, he was hailed as The Next Big Thing. He's a great shot-maker, but physically has a long way to go.
omid (zurich)
Greg, well. I think Fed is not playing as aggressively and free swinging as he was a year ago, maybe the pressure of history is getting to him? Concerning him and Nadal, I'm sure you know he lost his first match ever to a fresh faced/fearless Nadal in '04 on hardcourts and has struggled to play his best against him since. It hurts to say this as a die hard fan of Fed, but I think Wilanders comments from a year ago have a little merit if you consider Fed's fear of coming to net and attacking Nadal.
Greg Garber (1:24 PM)
Omid: True enough. Federer himself acknowledged that he's not playing as well as last year. But that can be explained by the weather here. If it's not raining, the wind is blowing 25 miles an hour. Nadal said earllier he will come out attacking tomorrow. Federer said he was surprised how aggressive Nadal was at the beginning of last year's match...For what it's worth, Wilander's comments were a bit harsh -- that Fed had no b------. You don't win 10 Grand Slam singles titles by not having, uh, gut.
Eric (NYC)
Greg: Djokovic has been touted the next big thing for a while now, but i really question his durability. If you cannot win 7 matches in a 2 fortnight, you could never be a GS champion, as simple as that. Though he had a tough match against Bagz, but still, to be a GS champ, you need to tough it out...your thoughts?
Greg Garber (1:28 PM)
Eric: This is the question with Djokovic. He retired against Nadal in the 06 French Open quarterfinals and now in the 07 Wimbledon semis. Weirdly, it wasn't his back, but his foot. He developed a bad blister in the quarters on Friday and it got infected. He's so young (he just turned 20), you have to cut him some slack. Federer didn;t win his first Slam until he was nearly 22...
Gary (Dallas, TX)
This season for Venus so far is unfolding just like 2005. Do you think that she will go downward for the rest of the year with poor results, or will this season end with her near the top of the game?
Greg Garber (1:30 PM)
Folks, please welcome in Bonnie, who covered the Venus-Bartoli match. Catch you tomorrow...
Bonnie DeSimone (1:32 PM)
Hi Gary -- Bonnie D. here. Your question is great and if I knew the answer, I'd be calling a few bookies right now. The simple answer is that when Venus is motivated and fit, she wins. Today she answered one question by re-committing to Fed Cup next weekend against Russia.
Mike (Jacksonville, FL)
Greg, I know this is thinking waaay far ahead, but work with me on this- If Federer can win tomorrow, he is set up to have a shot to win a 15th slam at Wimbledon next year, since he has owned US/Australian open the last 4 years, if he can win those and tomorrow thats 13, and if through some miracle he can beat Nadal at the French next year thats 14... I'm just throwing this out there!
Bonnie DeSimone (1:33 PM)
That'll be a great chase to cover, Mike.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:34 PM)
But even if Fed doesn't get there next year I'd say his chances are excellent. Wouldn't it be ironic if he could get over the hump at the French and tie or break the record there
Bonnie DeSimone (1:34 PM)
??
Eric (NYC)
Bonnie, are there any other top women that plays both side with two hands? (Besides Bartoli) Seles was obviously the best one in memory. Do you think that style still fit in today's game? Seems a tad slow to me...thanks.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:36 PM)
Interesting. I personally think that the two-hand off both wings helps Bartoli maximize what she's got. She might not get to as many balls but she'll be able to crack the whip harder on those she does.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:37 PM)
No question it limits her range but she is not the fastest out of the blocks anyway. And she gets to a lot more shots than you would think... I have been really impressed with her tenaciousness. She cried with disappointment today. A lot of players would have said, "Hey, I just lost to Venus Williams in my first Wimbledon final... not too shabby.'' Not her.
harold lex, ky
How many more times will a Williams, win it all?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:38 PM)
My prediction would be: several, if they can stay healthy.
Meredith (Miami, FL)
Did you see the blister on Novak's foot today? On TV it didn't look so bad that he wouldn't be able to continue.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:40 PM)
Djokovic said after the match that his back was bothering him along with the toe. The toe is infected. Having had a little-toe injury myself recently, I have a new respect for how something very small can mess you up in a large way. All that side-to-side in the insane amount of tennis he played this week aggravated it, I'm sure.
Paul (St Augustine FL)
Greg, I know people are itching to crown Nadal over Federer, but doesn't it have to be pointed out that Nadal has only proven that he can beat Federer (in big Grand Slam matches/finals) at the French? Fed beat him at Wimbledon last year, and Nadal hasn't gone past the quarters of either the Aussie or the US Open, so doesn't that pretty much end any argument?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:44 PM)
Paul, I'll say what I've been saying all year: Nadal is 21, and in the last four years he's converted himself from a pure clay-court player to a guy who has now made two straight Wimbledon finals and won four Masters Series events on hardcourt. The transformation from clay caterpillar to all-surface butterfly is still in progress and he has a lot of time to work on it. I am not itching to crown anyone but I think his ability to challenge Roger and other top players on grass/hard will continue to grow.
Megan (Indianapolis)
Another bitter loss for Roddick. Seems like the bitter/bad losses have far outnumberd the big wins since he won the US Open (gulp) 4 years ago. When was Roddick's last satisfying, significant win?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:55 PM)
I'm sure it was satisfying to defend his title at Queens Club where he won three in a row if I'm not mistaken (2003-05) and his title in Cinci last year involved beating Murray, Gonzalez and Ferrero. But I've seldom seen him as desolate as he was yesterday. You have to imagine being only 25 (he turns 25 next month) and know that you only have a limited amount of time to accomplish your goals.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:55 PM)
Sorry, didn't defend his title at Queens but won it for the fourth time.
Kathleen (NY,NY)
Bonnie, I was eager to wake up for the women's final today. And Congrats to Venus on her 4th! But, I am not likely to make waking up a priority tomorrow to see the men's final. Fed-Rafa has become a big bore. Why can't any other man step up?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:56 PM)
Hey there Kathleen... I have to disagree with you on Roger-Rafa... long rivalries are what give the sport interest, sort of like seeing characters develop in a novel or movie. That is, as long as there are shifts in the dynamics.
Bonnie DeSimone (1:57 PM)
Remember that the Chris Evert-Martina Navratilova rivalry was very one-sided in Chris' favor for a long time, and then the earth shifted. The way that rivalry evolved made it very compelling. Hopefully R and R will give us the same kind of long-term entertainment... so I'd urge you to tune in.
Terry (Atlanta)
Whats up with these people referring to you as Greg? Anyway, I heard Luke Jensen earlier on ESPN claiming that Nadal has perhaps hit the peak of his potential (both in terms of this year and his career)... I think this is kind of ridiculous, since he is just 21 and can clearly improve his serve and ability on faster courts, what do you think about Luke's statement?
Bonnie DeSimone (1:59 PM)
Terry -- see my answer to Paul a few minutes ago.
Gerardo (Tucson)
Bonnie, you probably get asked this question a lot, but, what do you think needs to be done in the U.S. to increase the interest in tennis? I've never met anyone who gave the sport a chance and then decided they didn't like it. It's a great sport.
Bonnie DeSimone (2:01 PM)
Everywhere I've lived in the country -- and that includes Chicago and Philly -- participation numbers were strong. It's usually a function of the very basics -- does your town/county/state have a well-maintained park system and access to affordable instruction? If you think they have room for improvement you should speak up.
Bonnie DeSimone (2:02 PM)
Folks, I have to sign off now. We really appreciate all the traffic and hope wehave the pleasure of your company tomorrow for our last day of Wimbledon 2007.
Ryan (New Orleans)
Much has been made of Sampras and Federer having parallel careers (born 10 years apart almost exactly etc). In line with this, Sampras won just (by his standards) 4 majors in 5 years after turning 26. Isn't it possible (considering this fact) that people are moving too quickly to hand Federer between 18-20 Slams when he finishes his career? Do you see Fed having a similar downturn?
Todd Martin (2:05 PM)
Ryan: I can see where you are coming from. However Federer has been dominant at 3 or the 4 majors. Pete only won two in a year a few times. Federer has already won 3 in a year at least twice, maybe 3 times.
Omid (zurich)
Todd, Gasquet came of age today. He lived up to his potential for once, and his fitness level didn't let him down like it did against Hewitt in the us open last year. Roddick on the other hand seems to have become a grinding baseline player with a mediocre net game.
Todd Martin (2:07 PM)
Omid: It takes more than one match to prove a point. Gasquet is an incredible talent, but his result and play yesterday will be more believable once he repeats it on a similar stage. Conversely, Roddick tightened up and didn't seem as decisive when attacking, but he has proven himself over the years as a competitor.
Omid (zurich)
Hey Todd, sorry to say i told you so but I had a feeling yesterday that Gasquet was going to take it to Roddick, he had that look in his eye. You mentioned yesterday that Roddick was forcing Gasquet to come up with tough passes but i have to disagreee, Roddick's approaches were mediocre and ineffective against a shotmaker like Gasquet.
Todd Martin (2:09 PM)
Omid: Yes you did. I still like attacking more than counterpunching, especially in the crunch. If Andy had been more free with his attacking and directed more of it to the Gasquet forehand I think he would have had his shot against Fed today. But, well done Richard.
Michael (Marietta, GA)
How good is Jaime Murray at doubles and what about the pairing of him and Janovic. They seem like they are always enjoying themselves out there. Could this be a pair that is always in the semis and finals of grand slams.
Todd Martin (2:11 PM)
Michael: Jamie Murray has proven to be a very good doubles player. He and Eric Butorac have won 3 titles this year.
Todd Martin (2:12 PM)
Michael: Considering Jamie is playing with one of the best women and enjoying their experience together, I would suspect they will continue to do well.
Meredith (Miami, FL)
Todd, before you retired Roger was just beginning his impressive Slam runs. How has he changed as a player and person since then?
Todd Martin (2:13 PM)
Meredith: The good thing is that he hasn't seemed to change as a person. He isn't much different as a player, but LOTS better. He might be a little less agressive as for coming to the net, but not much if any.
Gerardo (Tucson)
Hey Todd. Are there any juniors out there (any nationality) who you think have extraordinary potential? Who should we look for in the next 2-3 years? I'm happy with the Roger-Rafa status of the men's game, but other than Henin it seems like the women's quality and consistency is a bit down.
Todd Martin (2:15 PM)
Gerardo: There are for sure some juniors out there that will insert themselves into the world game before long. I don't know them, but they are out there. Henin willl have more competition if the collective health and commitment of the other women improves.
Hannah (Seattle)
Hi Todd, Who is your pick in tomorrow's men's final?
Todd Martin (2:17 PM)
Hannah: Hard to bet against Fed, but Nadal will be nasty in underdog role. My guess is Fed in 4, but tomorrow, more than most times, I would not be surprised if Nadal pulled off a miracle.
Alex, Halifax
Greg, In their prime of primes, Federer now and Sampras, I dont know, back in the mid to late 90's, who wins more often between the two at Wimbledon and on hard courts?
Todd Martin (2:21 PM)
Alex: I will answer your question for Greg. Sampras had the one dominant weapon (serve). Federer has the much more complete game. On grass I think that Pete might have won more often because he would be able to survive at less than his best, but Federer would win on hardcourt more. Just one man's opinion. Of course, not the man's opinion that you wanted.
Alan, Houston Texas
2 things, Bartoli spends too much energy jumping, and is not fit enough to proceed with that. Also, don't think venus could play any better, she was at the top of her game.
Todd Martin (2:26 PM)
Alan: What she does between points would have caught up to her in the previous rounds if it was too much. I do believe that her fitness can be much better, though. Venus was outstanding after being down 5-3 in the third against Morigami.
Zach (Appennzell)
Good evening Todd, related to the GOAT debate, I watched some film of Laver recently and the game during his time seems like it was played in slow motion compared to the last 15 years or so. If a great recent player (Sampras, Agassi, Fed) was to play Laver in his prime I think it would be a blowout. What are your thoughts?
Todd Martin (2:29 PM)
Zach: This is exactly why the GOAT discussion stinks. Laver was absolutely dominant amongst his era. He won the GRAND SLAM twice 6 years apart. Wasn't allowed to play in between because he had turned professional before the Open era. Of course, 3 of the 4 majors were played on grass at that time. Budge, Laver, Borg, Sampras, Federer all outstanding players. No way whatsoever to come to a conclusion on who was the best.
Alex (Hfx)
Todd, you sure about that. Sampras had the best volley in the game at the time and the biggest forehand in the game along with Agassi. Not sure I agree with your assessment of their games. Plus, Agassi himself in his prime would have given Fed all he could handle. Only one man's opinion.
Todd Martin (2:32 PM)
Alex: Pete hardly volleyed better than Rafter. I could also argue that Krajicek volleyed better too. His forehand was great (believe me I know as I watched them go by me often). That being said, he did not have the defensive skills of Fed, nor did Agassi.
Gary (Dallas, TX)
Hi Todd. Who do you think (and at what Slam) will be the next man not named Rafa or Roger to win a major?
Todd Martin (2:33 PM)
Gary: If the last two majors are any indication, Djokovic. He is a great talent and only getting better. If he can step up the offensiveness in his game he will stand a good shot to win in NYC.
Todd Martin (2:34 PM)
Gary: Check that...a SLIGHT chance to win in NYC, but better than everyone other than Nadal and Fed.
Brett (New York)
How do you think Pete (or any of the great SandV'ers from the 90s Becker, Edberg, Rafter) would do in today's tour? Also, I think all this talk of Pete making a comeback is ludicrous since he was losing to no-namers back in 02 when he was in playing shape and now having been out of the game for so long and having a step or two in his speed, I don't think he would stand chance against Fed. I saw his matches on the senior tour and he didnt really seem to be up to the ATP standards at all. Whatre your thoughts about him making a 'comeback' as is being infered by people who listen to his interviews?
Todd Martin (2:35 PM)
Brett: I don't think we have anything to worry about re: Sampras comeback. Not going to happen. He still plays at a level that would keep him in the top 50 or higher, but would be a tougher "out" on the grass.
Manoj (San Jose, CA)
Hi Todd, Federer looks very comfortable at the net with his stop volleys, but as has been repeated so many times, does not play the natural serve-and-volley game at Wimbledon. Do you think the game has changed over the years since you played that it is difficult to play competitively by coming regularly to the net? Do you see serve-and-volley as a fading art?
Todd Martin (2:38 PM)
Manoj: Getting to the net is different than 10 years ago. It is more difficult to get there by just serving and volleying. Although, I do think there is still a place in the game for it. See Mahut lost (barely) in the final of Queen's just before Wimbledon. There just aren't too many guys who can still volley well enough.
Russ (Memphis)
How good is Sam Querrey going to be? To me, these are his potential levels: Worst case- Taylor Dent level (pre injury) Realistic case- Berdych level, Best case- Roddick. What do you think?
Todd Martin (2:40 PM)
Russ: Berdych still has tons of room to improve, but Sam should be a top 30 player before long. If he can make it there, he can continue to rise to an elite level. He has some big weapons and he understands how to structure some good points. Great tools to have. Look for him to play well this summer on the hard courts.
vinny
Todd, serve aside, who was a better volleyer Pete or Rafter?
Todd Martin (2:41 PM)
Vinny: Hands down the better volleyer was Rafter.
Bob (paris)
Hey Todd, if you were Federer's coach would there be any specific tactics you would advise him to use tomorrow such as approacing up the middle and being aggressive with his backhand just to change things up? Thanks.
Todd Martin (2:43 PM)
Bob: I love players using the middle of the court. It would be great for Fed to return aggressively up the middle as a change up. I also would want him to attack the forehand in order to get to the net to the backhand. GET TO THE NET!!
Alfonzo (Chicago)
I am constantly disappointed with the commentators and how bias they seem to be. Their comments seem to be base on prejudices and not facts. For instance, no one believed that Nadal would make it to the final. I don't understand how they can constantly count him out when he has proven time and time again that he can take out anyone even the guys that serve and hit big on grass. Not to mention that whole controversy with Serena Williams. I couldn?t believe that people were questioning her behavior and the legitimacy of her injuries. It would be nice if the commentators would look at the individual?s game and the effectiveness of his or her game against a perspective opponent. I honestly don?t believe that they do that at all. Do you agree or disagree with my
Todd Martin (2:46 PM)
Alfonzo: At times I think your opinion is backed up, but in this case there were several people who picked a rematch between Fed and Nadal. Some even gutsy enough to pick Nadal. Serena's situation, from what I saw was a legitimate stressful injury. I don't know what other's thought of it, but everyone has a right to their opinion.
Jim (Hartford)
Todd,Continuing on the lack of serve/volley nowadays, (and even in the last 10 years or so), is it the coaching these kids are getting at a young age? Or do you see it more as a fear of getting passed at the net? I wonder because it seems most pros feel getting to the net is important, but virtually all of the players coming up won't go near the net. I can't understand why coaches don't breed this into their pupils at a young age?
Todd Martin (2:49 PM)
Jim: Complex discussion. The best players pass much better. Also, technology (strings especially) allow for better passing. Pace has also been neutralized. I wish volleying techniques and net positioning was taught better from an early age. It would set more players up to be willing to come in.
Auburn, Alabama
hi Todd, would you please tell the ESPN commentator Luke Jensen keep his mouth shut? I watched entire 2-weeks hightlight on ESPN, he always made wrong predictions about Nadal's match. He analyzed with bunt of craps. He need beter to lean from Brad. Gilbert, a great coach, a great analysis. Regardless the outcome of final tomorrow, do you agree with me that Nadal should deserve to be number ONE at the end of this year. He had a great year, currently the best player in tour right now. All critics are so nonsense. They are so bias, so Federer style, or Rafa is Spaniard maybe. You have to admire this kid. I think he the one to save the game of tennis last 3 years. Without him, Fed. take all the titles, make this sport more boring with one side. Thanks for RAFAL. You are becoming a Champion after tomorow match
Todd Martin (2:54 PM)
Auburn: Fed does get lots of attention due to his graceful style. Similarly, Nadal gets lots of credit for his fitness and heart. Truth is they have a lot of mutual talents and characteristics. If Nadal wins tomorrow, there is a good chance he will end up #1. If not, he'll have to win the US Open to have a chance.
Manoj (San Jose, CA)
Hi Todd, I don't want to rub it in but I remembered your match against MaliVai at the 96 Wimbledon while watching Bartoli come back to beat Henin. Having been there, what is it that changes the outcome of the match? Is it really "a couple of points here and there"? Is it the underdog stepping it up because he/she has nothing to lose? Sitting on the couch and watching it is easy to assess, but always difficult to comprehend.
Todd Martin (2:57 PM)
Manoj: For every player and situation it is different. With Mal, he and I were pretty level to get to the fifth. From 5-1 in the fifth, I let 2 points go by that were critical. Once that slide starts it is difficult to stop that negative momentum. Mal, being a great player capitalized initially because he had nothing to lose, but ultimately because he maintained his level through the finish line.
Jim (Hartford)
Todd, I agree with everything you're saying about getting into the net for Fed. He seems to lack that net rushing mentality, where he should put it behind him if Nadal passes him a few times. I'm surprised he doesn't come in more when it gets tight, to force Nadal to keep coming up with good stuff. Do you see that as a lack of confidence at the net on Fed's part? Or more of self-belief that he can beat him from the back court?
Todd Martin (2:59 PM)
Jim: I think it is both that he is confident from the back court and that he doesn't have equal confidence at the net. However, I would add this, he also has tremendous respect for the damage Rafa can do to him if Fed comes to the net.
Todd Martin (3:00 PM)
Good day everyone. Hope you all enjoy the final as much as I will. Should be a great one. Tomorrow 2 ET again.
Wimbledon Moderator (3:27 PM)
Thanks Todd, Greg and Bonnie! I hope all you tennis fans enjoyed the chat. We'll see you all right here at 1 p.m. ET tomorrow for our last day at Wimbledon!
Jessica, Los Angeles, CA
The girls got their way and got equal prize money. But if they really want everything to be "fair" and "equal", why don't demand a single non-gender specific draw? The fact is, the women wouldn't stand a chance against even the male qualifiers. That said, I believe the women do deserve similar prize money, but it's for no other reason than because they bring in similar revenue from ticket sales/ratings/etc. Arguing that the games match up is an insult to the men's game and places unfair expectations on the female players.
Todd Martin (1:59 PM)
Jessica: Well argued. I don't think too many people in the know were arguing that equal prize money should come due to commensurate levels of play. The arguement has always been revenue balance as you spoke about. In the end, it is the AELTC's money. Let them spend it the way they want.
Anonymous (Mobile)
Do you like the replay? It seems to be counterproductive. If the ump/judge calls it out then you're gonna stop and not try and hit the ball back, so that penalizes you if some replay shows it was in.
Todd Martin (2:01 PM)
Anonymous: I do like the replay. Its accuracy is yet infallible, but I imagine will continue to improve. Also, I believe players are granted too many challenges. To be able to be wrong 3 times in a set is silly and leads to improper use of the system. Also, do away with an extra challenge for a tie break.
Zach, TX
ROGER WINS!!!! 5 IN A ROW!....So, where does this match rank in Wimbledon finals, and where does Roger rank in all-time greats? #2 behind Laver? or #3 behind Laver and Sampras?
Todd Martin (2:03 PM)
Zach: It puts him further above the competition of this era. No way to compare generation to generation. Let's enjoy him while we got him.
Ryan (East Lansing, MI)
That was a great match to watch... definitely up there with some of the greats. I can honestly say that this match was nearly as enjoyable as the Sampras v. Agassi match mentioned in the telecast. How do you feel about todays battle?
Todd Martin (2:04 PM)
Ryan: Hard to beat today's. A champion survived the greatest test from the second best in the world. Great escape from 1-1 and 2-2 15-40. Amazing!
Dave,Atlanta,Ga.
Will Roddick's career be like Michaal Changs,in that they will win one slam and be top 5-10 yearly?
Todd Martin (2:05 PM)
Dave: Maybe. But, I suspect that Andy will win another. He continues to put himself in the position to be a contender. With that big of a game it will come together again.
Ed (Toronto, ON)
If Federer never wins the French Open but breaks Pete Sampras' career grand slam record can he be the consensus greatest ever or will there be doubts like Sampras' legacy?
Todd Martin (2:07 PM)
Ed: Probably. Federer, however, has demonstrated his clay court capabilities and then some. In my opinion, the only thing that should call into question Feds capabilities and dominance is if he takes a dive from here. He has dominated the last several years like none other since Laver.
SteveH (Los Angeles, CA)
How do the ATP and USTA expect to jump start a tennis resurgence in this country when they allow the networks to provide such horrible television coverage? Every time I turn on the TV they're either showing a Williams sister or Sharapova beating someone 1 and 1. On the off chance they actually show a Mens' match, at 4-4 in the 5th they switch coverage to another network who promptly begins by shwing a Williams sister or Sharapova.
Todd Martin (2:09 PM)
Steve: It is a challenge. The networks have a desire to appeal to the general sports fan and think it takes a huge name to get them to stop clicking the remote. I agree that what will draw more viewers in the long run is televising our best (most competitive) matches.
Manoj (San Jose, CA)
Todd, After today's performance, where would you put Federer in the annals of Wimbledon history? On par with Borg or higher?
Todd Martin (2:12 PM)
M
Todd Martin (2:13 PM)
Manoj: On par with Borg. Pete still accomplished more by winning 7 out of 8, but Fed doesn't look to be wilting.
Bradley (Avon, Colorado)
I was pleasantly surprised by such a high quality final. The only letdown was in the 4th set when Roger seemed to get uncharacteristically frustrated. Why do you think he lost it so much there? Did the pressure get to him?
Todd Martin (2:15 PM)
Bradley: Even the greatest of champions have their doubts and Roger had a lot of doubt creep in. Add what he thought was a bad and unarguable line call into the mix and the stress level goes up pretty quick.
Nabeel (Philly)
Is Hawk Eye reliable? The one challenge from Nadal seemed too close to be called in, and the one Federer challenged was too close to be called out.
Todd Martin (2:17 PM)
Nabeel: Hawkeye is accurate enough to use, but not perfect yet. I like it and it takes a lot of the childish shenanigans out of the game. Players know they have to put their money where their mouths' are.
Ed (Toronto, ON)
If you were coaching which style would you have your students strive towards Federer's or Nadal's.
Todd Martin (2:19 PM)
Ed: Either one really. I do like how willing Nadal is to come to the net and how his slice has improved.
David (Atlanta, Georgia)
Todd, Do you think Nadal is closer to beating Federer on grass than Federer is to beating Nadal on clay? And, who do you give the edge to on hard courts and why?
Todd Martin (2:21 PM)
David: After today, I like Nadal's chances on grass. He proved a lot today. I would have answered the question differently yesterday. Nadal was the better player for a significant amount of time today. Fad on hard court still!
george. venezuela
HI Todd: Look, I didn´t see the match but don´t understand how Federer could argue against the "Hawk-Eye," about it´s being supposedly "unfair" to him. Seems illogical and not part of his personal style. What´s your read?(A heat-of-the-battle thing, maybe?)
Todd Martin (2:23 PM)
Georte: Hardly made a stink about it, but the players are aware that there is a margin of error. Plus, they all still see the ball the way their heart's want to.
Manoj (San Jose, CA)
Boris Becker said today that Federer needs another 12-15 months of consistent Slam performance to cement his place as the greatest ever. Having equaled Bjorn's record, would you now put him above Borg on grass? Do you think he's been as dominant as Sampras at Wimbledon or does he need two more titles to establish that claim?
Todd Martin (2:25 PM)
Manoj: I think Boris is pretty close to accurate. He is only 3 behind Sampras now and if he continues the torrid pace he has been on he will pass Sampras 4 years earlier than Pete won his 14th.
omid (zurich)
Hey Todd, amazing final today. Fed really showed me his heart today although I must say his tactics frustrated me again. The difference was his serve (although Nadal was getting them back in the 5th) and a few unbelivable slice backhands which were more effective than Fed's usual short topspin stuff. Nadal was dictating play from the back and hitting some unbelievable passing shots so i can understand Fed's reluctance to come in to the net, but it is still the right play. What do you say? And one more thing, why is it that Fed can block a 140mph serve from Roddick back with too much trouble but with Nadal today he netted so many returnable serves?
Todd Martin (2:35 PM)
Omid: I think that attacking is the right play for Fed. Today he was most effective when he came in behind Nadal or at him. My biggest frustration was that he didn't use his slice backhand more. Returning a sliding lefty serve is difficult. Fed seems to approach it a bit timidly. When he starts to feel better he seems more free with his swings. 140 mph and straight for guys with great reflexes just isn't that difficult if it isn't located well.
Mary (Fairfax, VA)
Nadal is only 21. He gets closer to beating Federer on grass, and seems to get into Roger's head better, each year. Do you think Nadal will take over in years to come, or is his playing style not conducive enough to hard courts?
Todd Martin (2:37 PM)
Mary: Had Nadal won today it would have been hard for Fed to end up #1. It still might be close at the end of the year. But for now, Nadal doesn't like how fast the hardcourts are. He IS getting much better everywhere though.
Peter Lee (Enterprise, Alabama)
Todd i believe that Nadal has by far the best forehand on clay, and it is on a near equal level with federers on other surfacces.. so wouldnt u consider his forehand to be the best in the game?
Todd Martin (2:37 PM)
Peter: Best or second best. I would take them both.
John (California)
Did Nadal's knee injury play a role in his defeat today? Or did Federer just play that much better in the 5th set?
Todd Martin (2:39 PM)
John: I don't believe so. It happened at the best time for him, after he was already up 2 breaks in the fourth. By the time the 5th started, he was obviously comfortable again. It might not feel great tomorrow though.
Dave (ABQ, NM)
Todd, I find it curious that relative to 2-3 yrs ago when noone gave anyone a chance vs Federer that now people regularly choose against him with alot of experts even giving Roddick a good chance to beat him even tho history has shown consistently otherwise. Are people just tired of choosing Fed or have the other players really closed the gap?
Todd Martin (2:42 PM)
Dave: Nadal has closed the gap. And, Roddick, playing aggressively, can give him a run, especially on grass. However, I do think people like to say that they picked the upset, and with so many people fauning over Fed's game, it would be a big upset.
Andrew (Arkansas)
Todd, what do you think this match will do for Roger mentally? Although we won, will he be shaken at all that he was pushed so hard on his turf?
Todd Martin (2:43 PM)
Andrew: Grass is now Nadal's second best surface. Roger knows that and to beat him in five should help Fed mentally. It was a great match and Fed picked it up when it mattered most.
Joe (Monterey Park, CA)
hi, todd! i thought federer was going to lose the match against nadal today after he had been broken twice in the fourth set and when nadal was one point from breaking him the fifth set twice; he then was able to hold his composure and made some "federer" shots during these two games and after that (especially, in sixth and final games of the last set). how incredible he was i thought and he is simply the best tennis player i have ever seen and the most dominant athlete on earth now (he was bumped and baffled by the hawkeye system and chair umpire's blunders in the latter part of the match!). he is just the sheer champion. great job todd in chatting with us over the past weeks. i really appreciate it!
Todd Martin (2:45 PM)
Joe: He was outstanding in saving the break points and capitalizing on his opportunities in the 5th. He showed lots more than just his shot making ability. He outcompeted the best ccompetitor in tennis today.
Adam (Springboro Ohio)
Nadal has achieved great success on clay and now, I think, on grass. Why has he fallen short on the hardcourt if he has this kind of game?
Todd Martin (2:48 PM)
Adam: Hardcourts don't allow his counterpunching skills to be shown off as much. And, his serve doesn't slide as much on the hard court as it does on the grass. He will do well this summer.
al,livorno
doesn´t the statistics of the fifth probe that Nadal´s knee was a key factor? %winers on his first serve 47% in the fifth and above 70% in all the previous sets
Todd Martin (2:51 PM)
Al: Two players had a hand in that stat. Look at the way Nadal moved and the opportunities he was still able to create for himself and I believe there is the proof.
Bradley (Avon, Colorado)
Do you think the effectiveness of your serve has changed since you've started using the abbreviated motion? If you were teaching someone how to serve would you teach a full motion like you used to use or would you teach him an abbreviated motion?
Todd Martin (2:54 PM)
Bradley: Absolutely I would teach a full rhythmic service motion. I use the abbreviated to protect my shoulder which I don't devote enough time to keeping healthy. I still serve well this way, but struggle with my rhythm upon occasion.
Todd Martin (2:56 PM)
Sandeep: I no longer believe that grass is the fastest court. Not when players play with topspin. Slice serves and slice backnands are faster on grasss but everything else is faster on hard and (probably) clay courts. That is why I think Fed needed to use his slice backhand more today.
Sandeep, richardson tx
Todd if grass is considered to be the fastest surface, and Nadal is so good on it right now dont you rate his prospects at the slightly slower US open hardcourts even more now so than before.
Darnell (MD)
How long do you expect Federer to be able to have multiple slam years and do you think it is a lock that he will pass Pete's 14 slams?
Todd Martin (2:58 PM)
Darnell: I like his chances to pass Pete. He is the favorite 3 times a year still. Next year he might be a slimmer favorite, but I still see him winning 2 or more next year...and probably 2009 also.
Todd Martin (2:59 PM)
Thanks to all for the laat couple weeks. Thank you to ESPN.com for the chance to share my thoughts. I have enjoyed the discussions and the tennis. Hope to chat with you again. Be well. Todd
