Sylvia, a native of Ellsworth, Maine, is only the second two-time heavyweight champion in the UFC's history. He successfully defended his title against Andrei Arlovski on July 8 in UFC 61: Bitter Rivals at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Sylvia won the rubber match with Arlovski, after "The Pitbull" defeated "The Maine-iac" in their first matchup and then Sylvia defeated Arlovski in UFC 59: Reality Check back in April.
Sylvia first won the heavyweight title in UFC 41: Onslaught in February 2003. He had a 15-0 record entering the fight with Ricco Rodriguez. Sylvia stopped the fight in the first round. After UFC 61, Sylvia ran his record to 24-2.
