Buzzmaster (5:53 PM)
Gooooood morning, SportsNation! Boxer Vernon Forrest will talk about his fight this Saturday. Teen racing sensation Brad Coleman will be by, as well as ESPNU's "Summer House" co-host Mike Hall. Dan Shanoff (9:02 AM)
Welcome to the Morning Quickie!
Dan Shanoff (9:02 AM)
It's Thursday, August 3. I'm your host, Dan Shanoff, creator and writer of the Daily Quickie on Page 2.
Justin (Blacksburg)
How can you not love that hustle in the 8th in a blowout game? Chase Utley: superstud.
Matt "The Intern" (Chicago)
Mark Loretta = The New David Ortiz
Keith (PA)
It was a hit, and if you wanted to argue it he got a clearly legit hit in the 9th so please no talk of Chase's streak not really being extended. I will say that he fought hard to get through the Shanoff curse though. Dan no more talk about Chase from you, its the only thing the Phillies have other than Howard.
Dan Shanoff (9:03 AM)
But you have to agree that if he was oh-fer heading into the 9th, his mentality for that at-bat would have been MUCH tighter than it was knowing a hit was in the books already.
Jim (Det)
Dan, for a while i thought your curse on Chase Utley was going to end the streak...
Jeff (KC)
Anyone else besides me think the Shanoff curse was in full effect last night until Utley got his hit?
Kito (NJ)
Hey Dan!! My buddy Dave from Hoboken made his MQ debut yesterday. I made sure to warn him about reposting the same comment over and over again.
Brendan (Boston)
Are we going to talk about Chase Utley every day he gets a hit? Because this is getting old fast.
Dan Shanoff (9:04 AM)
By the way, Brendan (Boston), have you seen today's Daily Quickie yet?
Jon (Malvern)
Mussina and Wang are looking like they might be s pretty good 1-2 punch come playoff time. Randy who?
Tim (Pittsburgh)
Hustle? More like him knowing the only thing the team has going is him and him only. Like I said yesterday, these hits are terrible and we need to be talking about pennant races, not the PHILLIES!
Brian (Raleigh)
Looks like its time for Tiger to dominate golf again. 5 under through 5 holes today!
Chris (CT)
I love that the Sox have that fighting spirit, but how about you win one before the 9th...that would be fantastic if you could do that.
Josh (Lansing)
Chase Utley in the chase to the consecutive hit record, and all of the sudden the Phillies are in the wildcard chase.... just three games back.
Dougie Fresh (DC)
Wang deserves serious Cy Young votes. The guy in top 3 in the league.
Jonathan (Buffalo)
So dan, I heard there might be opening in a Oklahoma dealership. You get paid 40 hours while only working 5, thats sweet, where do I apply
Matt (DC)
Dan, today is my 21st birthday, and all I want is an MQ shout-out!
Dan Shanoff (9:04 AM)
Done!
Dave (Boston Via Hoboken, NJ)
This is my second day here....I am sick of talking about Utley already.
Justin (Blacksburg)
Detroit Tigers: 37 games over .500 and the best team in the majors. By far.
Willy (NJ)
Once that hit streak ends, baseball in Philly will yet again prematurely come to an end this year...
Brendan (Boston)
I checked it early and it wasn't up, I'll look now.
John (Buffalo)
Ok Billy Wagner - that is more like it......
Matt "The Intern" (Chicago)
Dan, what is the appeal process like for MQ bans? Is there a committe assigned to handle such problems?
Joe (DC)
Yeah it would have been tighter, but we have to deal in reality, and in reality, he got 2 hits last night. Move on.
Nick (DC)
How bout that slide by A-Rod...pretty slick
Chris (CT)
So, I try to click on the picture you linked to the DQ and it doesn't come up!! What a disappointment!
Dan Shanoff (9:05 AM)
It worked for me. Try again.
Ephraim R. (Maple Shade, NJ)
Ok, I do love mocking Philly sports, any chance I get. But, I gotta, gotta give is up to Chase Utley. Guy plays like his life depended on playing hard, if the Phillies somehow make a late season WC run (why not, everyone else can), he's a potential MVP candidate. There, I said it.
Tim (Pittsburgh)
oh my Dan, David Ortiz went 0-4 with 4 Ks last night while A-Rod made a dazzling slide into second right before Jorge's 2-Run Blast. Trade Papi?!?
Tom (East Norriton,PA)
So how did the Yanks fans like Bobbys 2-5 with 4 LOB. Typical Bobby he got his hits but not in big situations. Like the Tuesday night he walked early and scored but went 0-3 the rest of the night. You're lucky the rest of the offense can pick that up something that didn't happen in Philly. Give him time he will hear plenty of boos when New Yorkers see how overrrated he is.
John (Portland, ME)
The Red Sox get another walk off win thanks to Big Pa.....I mean, thanks to Mark Loretta!
David (HP,NJ)
Two observations: 1) Has Carmona done anything in his career besides implode against the Sox? I'd never heard of him. 2) You saw Utley's hits last night? That's why I put no stock in this streak. I'd say this streak could have ended at least 15 times with a slightly better defensive effort.
Dan Shanoff (9:06 AM)
So could Joe D's...you just never saw those hits.
Mike (Norton, MA)
Eric Wedge must throw up in his mouth everytime the Indians have a lead going into the 9th
Dave (Boston Via Hoboken, NJ)
Wang Deserves Cy Young votes?? I must deserce to date Jessica Simpson too.
mike (long island)
Pedro/Willis tonight...instant classic?
tom* (parkville, md)
Everyone is jumping off the Oklahoma football bandwagon, once again proving it's never too early to jump on or off a bandwagon.
Joe (DC)
Every time I think I'm out, the Red Sox keep pulling me back in. I almost wanted Loretta to take a walk, just to bring Papi to the plate with the bases loaded and nowhere to put him.
Dave (Hazlet, NJ)
Stud of the day--Brendan from Boston with his DQ debut! Dan, did you manage to find a screenshot of the question?
Justin (Blacksburg)
Rhett Bomar: dumbest man in America today.
Christian (High Point, NC)
Dud: The ESPN.com headline writer. 'Controversial'? Utley got a hit in the 9th! The streak continues even if the hit in the 8th is called an error.
Tim (ATL)
Was that little cheap hit (hit WAS the right call) evidence that the tide is turning with regards to the MQ curse??
Brian (Richmond, VA)
Start this show off with this : A-Rod goes 0-4 with 4 K's and it opens EVERY show with anything to do with sports.... and it on the bottom ticker of ESPN and ESPN2, but Ortiz does it... and NOTHING is mentioned, they mention how clutch he is and about his game winner a few days ago. Granted Papi is probably the most clutch hitter in my lifetime, but it is showing how ridiculos ESPN is with bashing A-Rod and the Yankees is!!
Jon (Malvern)
Could that ARod slide last night symbolize that there are good times ahead for him? That would have been a LONG walk back to the dug out if he didn't pull off the swim move.
Christian (High Point, NC)
OOOOOOOOOOOOklahoma where the boosters get the QB kicked of the team (off the team)!
Jack (Toronto)
I didn't think it was conceivable that the Jays could trade V.Wells in the offseason, but if it brings a decent CF along with two solid rotation guys I'm all for it. Nice road trip!
Kevin (Manassas)
I got a massage yesterday and I woke up this morning stronger and faster than ever...I think the masseuse rubbed testosterone cream on me.
Chris (CT)
Nice, it worked. How proud of a moment is that for you? Seriously, to be on a video game means you arrived.
cara (new york)
i don't think he's cy-worthy but it's fun how wang might be the only pitcher out there that could, theoretically, toss a complete-game shutout without striking anyone out
Jeff (KC)
ADud's slide was nice, however the second baseman needs to return to little league to learn how to tag a runner... you NEVER reach for the runner. NEVER.
John (Buffalo)
David (HP, NJ) - I saw Fausto Carmona throw in Buffalo when they won the governors cup - he will be a good major league pitcher, but certainly not ready for the situations Wedge put him into the last 2 nights
Joe (Philly)
Lotta Jersey hate for Utley today... how can you choose Chase Utley to be negative about with all of the meatheads in MLB?
Tim (ATL)
Any hitting streak is going to have cheap hits... even JoeD's streak wasn't made up of HRs and doubles every night... those were definitely hits last night, and Utley deserves some credit for hustling down the line... (and the look on his face was great - he knew it was a cheap hit, but a hit nonetheless)
Jack (Toronto)
Let's put some rules on the Utley streak talk. 1. Only allowed to talk about it when he eaks out a 9th inning hit to keep it alive, 2. When he passes somebody on the list, 3. When he hits a milestone number i.e. 40, 45, 50. Done? Done.
Dan Shanoff (9:09 AM)
Let's get going.
Dan Shanoff (9:11 AM)
There's a ton to cover today, but let's just dive in with MLB Studs and Duds from last night. Got your nominees ready?
Brian (Newburyport,MA)
Maybe no Cy for Wang, but most certainly a gold glove. He has 41 combined putouts and assists, the closest pitcher to him has 32. Not to mention a perfect fielding pct.
Justin (Blacksburg)
Stud to St. Louis fans for booing that first hit. That's how you boo NYY fans...
Christian (High Point, NC)
Stud: Billy Wagner ...struck out the side and earned his save.
Clinton (Indianapolis)
Stud for Griffey, Number 558, but Dud to the Reds for losing AGAIN to the Dodgers at home.
Joel (Las Vegas)
Dud: David Ortiz with 4 strikeouts. Even Superman gets a dud every once and a while...
Brian (Richmond, VA)
DUD : David Ortiz 0-4 4K's but even worse DUD : freakin Carmona and Mr. Wedge himself
Aaron (Jersey)
Stud: Aaron Heilman with some more solid relief work in the stead of Duaner Sanchez
J.J. (Johnstown)
Dud: All of this negative Chase Utley talk. Were all of Dimaggios hits gappers, HRs, and Line drives? Probably not.
Jack (Toronto)
I'll just nominate the whole Jays pitching staff other than Halladay and Ryan as duds. Just copy and paste each day.
David (HP,NJ)
Stud: Wang... 18 innings w/o a run and still getting better every time out.
rob (warwick)
Dud: Loretta getting a walk-off hit and not letting Ortiz continue his legend status-building. Stud: Loretta with the walk-off anyway.
Jon (Malvern)
Stud - Wang. Coming off his first ML shutout throws 8 more innings of shut out ball against a good hitting Blue Jays team in some crazy heat.
Todd (Mid-GA.)
DUD: Jason Bay, weak pop up with the bases loaded, then drops a ball which eventually was the go ahead run...
Nick (DC)
Dud - David Ortiz...he hasn't looked to hot against lefties this year...0-4 with 4 Ks last nite...ouch
Keith (PA)
Stud: Jimmy Rollins with 2 HR, 3 RBI, and 4 runs scored last night. Not bad for a lead off hitter.
Mike (Norton, MA)
STUD: Big Papi was confused on how to celebrate last night since he wasn't the hero, and jumped on top of Youkilis in the pile...that could seriously injure someone which the Sox don't need
Mule (DC)
Stud: Chien Ming Wang. Best pitcher in baseball over the last two months. Seriously...better than Liriano. He doesn't get much credit, because he doesn't strike out anyone.
Dan Shanoff (9:19 AM)
OK, we've got to put this Wang thing in context right NOW: Where does Wang rank among starting pitchers in the AL this season?
Dan Shanoff (9:20 AM)
Behind...hm...Verlander, Liriano, Halladay, Johan....hm...Could Wang be No. 5 in the Top 5?
Luke (Nashville)
He has to be top 6 behind Halladay, Liriano, Santana, Mussina and Schilling. His pitching has kept the Yanks in the East race and could be the difference down the stretch against Boston
Dustin (Hampton)
the best groundball pitcher in the league. so hes in the top 5
Charles (SuperBurgh)
Wang hasnt even been the best pitcher on the Yankees, that belongs to Mussina who may not have as many wins but has been a better pitcher all season.
Justin (Blacksburg)
With his stats, Wang has definately been in the top 10. There's just so many good starters having career years in the AL, it's really tough to put his season in context.
tom* (parkville, md)
Wang is top ten and rising toward the top five. Liriano's injury slides him below Wang now.
Ben (Fairfax)
He's number 2 on his team after Mussina. But in the AL alone, probably around 20.
Chris (CT)
Eh, he's a solid starter, but if you're not striking people out eventually you'll run into troubles. I'm a big believer in power arms and the ability to strike people out.
Mule (DC)
Liriano, Santana, Wang. And only because Wang, started out shaky. He has gone 14 starts with over 7 IPs tho.
Joe (DC)
With a 1.25 WHIP and 48 Ks? Umm, no.
Kito (NJ)
Verlander, Loriano, Santana are far ahead. Then you got Halladay, Mussina, and maybe even Schilling. So I am going with 6 or 7th best.
Jon (Malvern)
Nope. Wang is a top 10 pitcher, but he's not even the best on his team. You have to put Mussina ahead of him.
Dave B (Trumansburg, NY)
Right now he's top 10, certainly. That said I think Wang is like other sinkerballers: on a roll. Same thing w/Brandon Webb in the NL and Derek Lowe a few years back for the socks. Few sinkerball pitchers keep it up for multiple years nowadays.
cara (new york)
i can think of two rookies i'd put ahead of him, plus santana, halladay, moose, and schilling...but he's been really important to the yankees
Brian (Newburyport,MA)
Hes gotta be top 10 in the AL. He gives you 7plus each time out, lots of double play balls, and fields his position well. The fact that he is getting better down the stretch increases his stock as a big game pitcher.
Dan Shanoff (9:24 AM)
Okay, I don't want to do this two days in a row, but I'm giving Chad from New York (what is it with guys from New York?) a warning about flooding the comment line with his same comment. Just post once.
Dan Shanoff (9:26 AM)
Let me try to explain this more generally: Just post once. You all know what makes a "good" comment and you know that my bar for posting your comments isn't overly demanding. Sometimes the comments come in quickly and a few good ones slip through the cracks, but in general I try to catch them all. When you post more than once, all it does is keep me from concentrating on finding the best comments and posting them. So keep it to one comment and roll the dice that I'll find you.
Dan Shanoff (9:26 AM)
That's all.
Dan Shanoff (9:26 AM)
Anyway, let's move on.
Dan Shanoff (9:27 AM)
Let's talk Chase Utley, but I want to ask about a little bit of a different angle: Does anyone else find it underreported that the offical scorer uses replay to correct his calls?
Dan Shanoff (9:28 AM)
Obviously, it's not the same as an ump using a replay to review a "bang-bang" call, but -- at least in this case -- it's a pretty important historical moment on the line, and the scorer is using replay to get the call right.
Dan Shanoff (9:28 AM)
Now, I'm in favor of using replay in baseball, so I'm all for it -- the point is to get the call right, period. Replay helped that.
Joe (DC)
Shouldn't he use replay? I would assume that he would.
Dan Shanoff (9:28 AM)
But what about the fact that MLB doesn't use replay for other calls?
Dan Shanoff (9:28 AM)
(And that so many "purists" abhor the idea of using replay?)
Christian (High Point, NC)
It wasn't news to me ... I'm pretty sure I had heard that in the past. But it has no impact on the game itself, so it makes sense that MLB would do so.
Mule (DC)
It did seem odd, that it was watched so quickly. Gotta feel for a guy in that positioon tho. That streak is all Philly has...could you imagine what would happen to that guy if he scored it an error?
Jonathan (Buffalo)
Isn't that the right thing to do Dan? Shouldnt we be saying that this is a good thing?
Jason (Scarsdale NY (in Boston today))
i found it extremely disconcerting that the scorers can be prejudiced by the writers in the booth, according to the announcers last night. I had visions of the official scorer sitting in a plexiglass booth, like the hockey judge who lights the lamp on a goal. But he's free to review and be swayed by others? Yikes.
Evan (DC)
That would shatter the very fabric of baseball's great tradition! Quick Dan! Quiet yourself before Papa Selig comes to "silence" you.
Will B. (Va Beach)
if the official scorer can use replay, the umpires should be able to also. They talk about upholding the integrity of the game and that keeping the human element is important, but if one official can use it and the others can't, how is that upholding any integrity?
Justin (Blacksburg)
Absolutely not. They've been doing that for a long time now. It doesn't at all mean it has a real-time place in the game. Whether its a hit or an error doesn't matter to the flow of the game.
Dougie Fresh (DC)
Not a bad idea. If this streak does really get up there in the 50's and gets close, the call HAS to be right. Joe D's streak is the one that everybody says is safe, and if it were broken by a bogus mistake, the fallout would be huge.
Geoff (Detroit)
You know, everyone is going to replay now. Just do it in all sports and get it over with already.
Todd (Boston)
MLB needs to do it for home run plays at the very least. There's no reason they couldn't do that.
Chris (CT)
The difference is, it's for scoring purposes. It has more to do with official stats than the outcome of a game. I think it's apples and oranges to compare it to other calls.
Dan Shanoff (9:31 AM)
In general, yes, but what about when it affects something as historic as a 30-plus game hit streak?
Dan Shanoff (9:31 AM)
That was rhetorical...or should I say RHETT-orical...as we segue into the next topic: Oklahoma football scandal.
Dan Shanoff (9:31 AM)
Let's just hear your general reactions/analysis.
Dan Shanoff (9:32 AM)
Couple of ways to slice this: How does this affect OU's chances this season -- is sub-.500 a possibility?
Dan Shanoff (9:32 AM)
Couple of ways to slice this: How does this affect OU's chances this season -- is sub-.500 a possibility?
Dan Shanoff (9:33 AM)
Next: Who's to blame for this? Bomar? The booster? The coach for lack of oversight? The culture of college football?
Dan Shanoff (9:33 AM)
Finally: How bad does it suck to be that idiot car dealer? I'd say he's going out of business.
Dan Shanoff (9:33 AM)
One day, you've got an autographed photo of Bomar in your showroom, using it to make sales -- the next, you're being run out of town.
Curtis (Indy)
I was great at Math in college and I got a job once to "work" a few hours but got paid extra money and it cost me my degree... oh wait that's not true that only happens against athletes in a big time money making business known as the NCAA.
Andy (Pittsburgh)
Was Rhett that important to the Sooner team? Last time I checked, they still had one of the best RBs in the country...
Mat (Scottsdale, AZ)
no one laugh at the RHETT-orical joke, it will only encourage him.
Jack (Toronto)
I think it's time to start having a serious debate about paying players in the big revenue sports. Wouldn't this eliminate 95% of the recruiting violation issues?
Sam (oklahoma)
Peterson is going to face a lot of 8 man fronts now! Look for him to struggle early in the season.
Dave (Boston via Hoboken NJ)
No shot of sub .500....Peterson will win the Heisman and they will still contend....Stoops was in a nice rebuilding phase and the defense will be Roy Williamsesque good this year.
Justin (Blacksburg)
Sub-.500 is absurd. In that conference mediocre is above .500. 4 or 5 losses is possible.
Chris (CT)
My reaction was to laugh. Hey, more power to OU for taking care of this now...it's been a crazy offseason so far.
mike (long island)
Great job by Oklahoma...same type of scandal that Maurice Clarett was part of, and Stoops cleaned house of his bad eggs...I am rooting for the Sooners this year as a result of the right action taken by the program
Nick (DC)
Didn't this kid have like 3 or 4 underage alcohol citations...he's not the brightest kid in the bunch...this just makes AP's job even harder
Scott (NJ)
College sports are corrupt. *yawn*
Greg (Baton Rouge)
Bonehead Bomar better move out of the state. Also, I wonder if anybody in Norman will buy cars at that dealership.
Chad (NY)
The Sooners go from National Champ favorites to another 8-4 campaign
Keith (PA)
When was the last time this happened to a school that was so highly ranked in offseason polls? His whole future just went out the window.
Evan (DC)
Happy days are heading to Austin boys and girls! Best news of my week. Hook em'!
Mat (Scottsdale, AZ)
I'm going to apply for a job at that dealership. 5 hours a day, $18000....not bad.
Justin (Blacksburg)
Dumbest move by a major college football player in recent years. At least show up to work and hang out on Sportsnation like the rest of us for a couple hours.
Dave (Boston via Hoboken NJ)
As a former FB player.....you should be able to work while you are on scholarship....they need to fix that damn rule anyway.
Todd (Boston)
The culture of college football is definitely to blame. You know these kinds of things have been going on for years, it's just now (and too late) that the NCAA has been cracking down.
Evan (DC)
Bomar has been a problem since he arrived at OU. Two underage drinking citations, a noise violation for an insane party. This wasn't a shock - it was a matter of when he did something like this.
Kubo (Brooklyn)
These things happen ALL THE TIME. I don't think anyone should be even remotely surprised when these stories come out.
Mat (Scottsdale, AZ)
I have a feeling this was gonna blow up in a huge scandal so Okla did what they could to nip it in the bud. No way they would do this if it wasn't going to blow up in their faces.
John (Buffalo)
If I understand this correctly....he was getting false hours working at an auto dealership....what would you expect from an auto dealership??? Seriously, hope they enjoyed the few thousand they made off of this....instead of the potential millions if the developed into NFL players
Dennis (Boston)
Its easy to say Bomar, but lets be honest, who wouldn't take perks. ALL college athletes do, some just don't get caught.
Matt (NJ)
How about the locals who worship these young athletes, such as the guy running the car dealership or the guy who hooked up warrick and coles with free suits? They should realize that it's gonna hurt the kids way more than it will help them.
Mike (Cohoes)
What I don't get is why these things still happen when it seems like more and more players get caught? OU is in real trouble now even with Peterson but I don't think under .500 is going to happen. 6-5 maybe 7-4 and a minor bowl.
Joe (Dayton)
There is NOTHING a school can really do about it, because they have no clue in most cases that a USED car dealership in Norman would be paying a kid like that...The school might have been naive, but in most cases the only thing the school gets for summer work is a name and a contact with a phone number.
mike (long island)
This is clearly at the fault of Rhett Bomar for not knowing better. And even if the coaching staff had some idea of this, they did the right thing by getting rid of him
Jeff (Cleveland)
I am so sick of people complaining about how 'athletes can't work'...oh...soooo sorry that you are getting a college education for free while the rest of us stiffs are racking up major student loan debt. Get over yourselves.
tom* (parkville, md)
Oklahoma has a few weeks to work the back-up into the system before the season starts. They should be fine by the Big Twelve schedule. It would be worse if a qb was injured in the opener.
Craig (Boston)
Who is to blame? I would say the player, the coach and the booster. Anyone who says the players should be pay is a an idiot, some of these players are getting scholarships at very good schools worth 100" of thousands of dollars
Mat (Scottsdale, AZ)
So how fast did Bomar's phone ring from other schools once the news broke? point 2 seconds? I'd like to see where he ends up.
Dan Shanoff (9:38 AM)
How many of you think that Bob Stoops shoulders some responsibility...is it on the coach to monitor his players in the "offseason?"
Dan Shanoff (9:38 AM)
I mean, I'm not asking him to monitor his fourth-string o-lineman...but your starting QB? how could this not be a priority?
Dan Shanoff (9:39 AM)
Meanwhile, I also put it on the head coach to keep the boosters in line.
Ephraim R. (Maple Shade, NJ)
Hah, he should have gone to an SEC school, they wouldn't have wasted time with an easy job and just slipped him the cash.
Dan Shanoff (9:39 AM)
Hmph.
Evan (DC)
But this is OU. The institution, the tradition - all of that is bigger than Stoops could ever be. Kudos to him for kicking Bomar off. Switzer would have demanded a raise.
Kevin (Manassas)
You can't babysit every player in the off-season. No way can you blame Bob Stoops. This is all on Bomar, he knew what he was doing was wrong, and now he has to pay for it.
Todd (Boston)
The coaches are at fault, since so many competitive programs don't recruit heavily on character. It's just the nature of the beast right now though.
John (Buffalo)
It is a sad state of things that now coaches are going to have to create a spreadsheet of paystubs, etc to monitor their players incomes
Dan Shanoff (9:41 AM)
It doesn't have to be the coach...how about the AD's office...I mean: I'm not asking you to do it for the JV tennis team. It's the freaking football program!
Stefan (Chapel Hill, NC)
Will someone blame the ridiculous and oppressive standards of the NCAA? Anyone?
Dan Shanoff (9:42 AM)
Come on: Are you blaming the NCAA's rules for Bomar taking a huge payoff for no work?
Dan Shanoff (9:42 AM)
Get real: If he was getting paid huge money and working his tail off, he MIGHT have a justification of "The NCAA rules are holding me down."
Dan Shanoff (9:42 AM)
But you can't use the "I have to feed my family" when you're talking $18K for 5 hours a week in the summer.
Dan Shanoff (9:43 AM)
And, I'm sorry, I have always had a blind spot on this issue: If you're getting a full ride, stop griping about the restrictions.
Dan Shanoff (9:43 AM)
There are a TON of students who put in just as many hours as a football player does on football, but go into hock for life for the chance.
Dan Shanoff (9:44 AM)
(That, and I have *never* heard of an idea for paying SOME college athletes more that wasn't as ripe for corruption as it currently is. All it does with some new scale is create a bunch of economic classes among athletes.)
Dan Shanoff (9:45 AM)
And I've definitely tried to think of a novel way to fix it. It's unfixable.
Dan Shanoff (9:45 AM)
But I go back to this: The players ARE paid -- It's called "in kind" and the value of a scholarship for tuition, housing, books and food (and top-tier health care) can be upwards of $50K a year.
Andy (Pittsburgh)
AMEN, Dan!!! I'm a student and I work a minimum of 40 hours a week just so I can afford my rent and maybe a decent meal every once and awhile...
Dave (Boston via Hoboken NJ)
If you are getting a full ride.....you should still be able to WORK if you want to! I don't see how you can justify any RULE that prevents you from working.
Justin (Blacksburg)
I'm 30grand in the whole with a year to go. And I actually work 40 hours a week during the summer. Let me rephrase that, I'm at work 40 hours a week. MQ isn't work. :)
Dan Shanoff (9:46 AM)
Sorry to monologue there, but it's one of my hot-button issues. Remember the old Page 2 "Writers' Bloc?" I once had a long IM debate with another writer about it.
Dan Shanoff (9:46 AM)
Let's move on.
Dan Shanoff (9:47 AM)
Anyway, speaking of college football, check out today's Daily Quickie -- last item of the main area where I talk about EA's NCAA CFB 07. Not only do I finally give Brendan his national 15 nanoseconds of fame, but there's a link to the actual screen-shot.
Dan Shanoff (9:49 AM)
Hilarious. Anyway, let's finish up with a Free For All to end the hour.
Jason (Scarsdale NY (in Boston today))
i love the screenshot. priceless. congrats.
Paul (MD)
My 15 seconds of fame is when I get a comment published on the MQ
Adam (Chicago)
Maybe I'm late, but Dan, is that a baby crying in the background of you recording your daily MQ?
Dan Shanoff (9:49 AM)
Crap. You heard that? Whoops. That's Li'l Gabe.
Todd (Boston)
Congrats Dan, you've done something none of us ever will, you've made it into a video game. My hats off to you...
Jon (Malvern)
Enjoy it Brendan and maybe you can work it to get some free tickets to the Sox game today. Time's almost up.....tick tock tick tock
Keith (PA)
It shows that ESPN and EA realize how important the MQ and DQ are to everyone's work day when it maked it into their games. Very cool, very cool.
Brendan (Boston)
And let me tell you, its everything I expected and more. Thanks Dan.
David (HP,NJ)
and that screenshot just made me order the game
Clinton (Indianapolis)
I saw that! How cool is that? Way to go Dan and big hat tip to Brendan!
Josh (Philly)
Have I been blacklisted along with Josh from NY? All I want to say is that those who think Schilling has been a top five pitcher this year are completely ridiculous, he has been giving up homeruns like Randy Johnson
Nick (State College, PA)
15 nanoseconds is a VERY long amount of time compared to some of the stuff I study. So it seems Brendan is making out great with the DQ fame. Congrats man.
Jason (Scarsdale NY (in Boston today))
so is someone in the MQ/DQ audience an employee of EA Sports (or whoever published the game)? or did they just scour the ESPN.com site?
Dan Shanoff (9:51 AM)
Apparently, someone at EA who was writing for the game came up with it. It did not originate from ESPN. I actually asked them about that.
Matt "The Intern" (Chicago)
Ebay auction for Bonds homerun ball ends in a little over 5 hours... Right now the highest bid is at a little over $150K
Clinton (Indianapolis)
WSOP Update: Don't worry, no spoilers here. Today is an off day, but there are still about 1100 players left in the main event. Just absolutely crazy.
Chris (Oxford, England)
Michelle Wie at +2 after the first round of the British Open. Also, the jockey who headbutted his horse has only been banned for ONE DAY!
Geoff (Detroit)
So is EA now going to make a Dan Shanoff simulator, kind of like NFL Head Coach. You decide the chat topics, you moderate, etc.
Dave (Boston via Hoboken NJ)
As soon as Madden comes out...College will be collecting dust....I do enjoy the one month I actually play it though.
Kubo (Brooklyn)
I'm an Indians fan. In watching the Indians-Red Sox games this week, I find myself struggling to figure out who to root for- my hatred of the Yankees is that deep.
Chris (Oxford, England)
Anyone else see Mike Lowell's comments about Castro? Whether they get it right or wrong, it's always good to see athletes taking an interest in political issues - so many of them are just too arrogant to care.
Jason (Scarsdale NY (in Boston today))
so, did Brendan print out the DQ and sign it, putting up in his cube for all to see? or would that have gotten him fired for NOT working when he should be?
Jon (Malvern)
$150k for a Bonds ball?? I think I'll pass.
Matt (Fairfax)
I finally got my copy of NCAA '07, having a good time running the triple option with Air Force... can't wait to play Notre Dame and just all-out blitz every play in an attempt to ruin Brady Quinn's future Madden '07 career
Andy (Pittsburgh)
My first MQ chat today and I have to say, that was an hour well wasted. What's even better is I got paid for that hour...
rob (warwick)
Dan... you are officially immortal. Someday, we'll be buyng this game for $1 off the Previously used games rack and remember how great the DQ was. Of course, that will be next Thursday, but hey...
mike (long island)
kudos to david stern for fixing playoff system...now, how do we get rid of WNBA?
Dan Shanoff (9:53 AM)
Glad you brought that up: WRONG. It's not fixed. Not when the 5th, 6th and 7th seeded teams in the playoffs can still have a better record than a division champ and still be seeded lower. Just look at this past season.
Dan Shanoff (9:54 AM)
There's a very simple solution: Top 8 teams make it, seeded on overall record. Period.
Dan Shanoff (9:54 AM)
Occam's Razor, people.
mike (long island)
anyone see seahawks lineman catching punts yesterday? now that is a team who has great chemistry, is loose, and can win the super bowl
Matt (Kansas)
I have a friend in Norman who said there was a lynch mob outside the dealership with bats waiting for Bomar's boss. They had to put him in hiding. As a born and raised Sooner fan, this is embarassing. But I'm glad Stoops took care of business the right way. They'll be good this year. Just not as good they could have been.
Willy (NJ)
Did anybody see the new names that D1A and D1AA might change to: NCAA Bowl Championship and NCAA Playoff Championship (or something to that effect) They have got to be kidding, right?
Nick (DC)
Tough break for WR Antonio Bass out of Michigan...messed up his knee, could be a career ender...
Charles (SuperBurgh)
As a SuperBurgh MQ representative, I would like to welcome Andy to the Morning Quickie.
Dougie Fresh (DC)
Big day for NYY with Lidle starting. If this guy can gives us 6 strong innings of 3-4 ER each time out, we are golden.
Andy (Pittsburgh)
10 points for bringing Occam's Razor into a sports chat!
Tom (East Norriton,PA)
Im a college junior and I get paid 10.30 to read the MQ...thats no Rhett Bomar money but it still beats working
Clinton (Indianapolis)
Okay, Dan, you made me go look up Occam's Razor on Wiki...but now knowing what it is, I agree...
Dan Shanoff (9:56 AM)
You know, I try. I actually wish like hell I'd come up with the "Occam's Razor" line when I was actually writing the Daily Quickie column this morning.
Clinton (Indianapolis)
Or to translate: KEEP IT SIMPLE, STUPID!
Dan Shanoff (9:56 AM)
Touche.
Logan (Norman)
Poor Bomar! Man that kid threw some good parties here in norman! I was there when he got his first underage, i guess it doesnt matter who you are when it comes to getting a ticket here in norman!
Gene (Boston)
Time to adrees all of you dorks who bash college athletes. 75% of you couldn't even balance academics with the workload athletes have to endure.
Dan Shanoff (9:57 AM)
I absolutely agree with that and don't doubt it. That doesn't mean the athletes aren't already getting paid to go to school inthe form of scholarships. Hell, we should ALL reserve our respect for the full-time athletes who are in sports that don't offer scholarships.
Dan Shanoff (9:58 AM)
Let me repeat: The best college student-athletes work harder than any other student in college. But that's the ones who work just as hard at school as at athletics. Not sure what the crossover is like in that Venn Diagram.
Dan Shanoff (9:59 AM)
Occam's Razor! Venn Diagrams! We SHOULD all be able to major in "Daily Quickie."
Dan Shanoff (9:59 AM)
Our time is up! Catch you all tomorrow at 9 sharp for a week-ender! Great work today. See ya!
