Chat with Cal CB Daymeion Hughes
![]() |
Hughes attracted a lot of attention during the 2005 season. He led the Pac-10 with 17 passes defended, including 12 pass break ups, which ranks fifth all-time on the Cal single season list. His five interceptions ranked fifth in the conference and 16th nationally. He amassed 62 tackles on the year, good for fourth on the team last season and is second among returning players this year.
After Hughes' impressive 2005 season, he enters the 2006 season on the watch lists for the Bednarik, Lott and Nagurski Trophies. His seven career interceptions ranks just three short of the top 10 in Cal history. His 18 career pass break ups are 10th on Cal's all-time list.

Daymeion is here! Let's get started.
Ivan Hermiston, Oregon
What's the loudest stadium you've ever played in?
Daymeion Hughes (3:03 PM)
Down at the Coleseium at USC. It was 92,000 there. It was 4th and goal at the 9 and we were trying to go in and score. I couldn't even talk to the person next to me. It was crazy.
Edwin, Bay Area, CA
Hey Daymeion. What are the teams' thoughts on Tennessee? Are they fired up to play on such a national stage? How's our confidence level against one of the more historic teams in the nation?
Daymeion Hughes (3:04 PM)
Our confidence is tremendous right now. As long as we prepare well as we've been doing and continue to work, we're going to be absolutely ready come Sept. 2.
Pree (San Francisco, CA)
Do you have anyone in the NFL after whom you learn / try to model your game?
Daymeion Hughes (3:05 PM)
I watch a lot of Delta O'Neal. I've talked to him on a couple of occasions. I watched the things he does, especially when he was at Cal. He was an all-around playmaker.
Peter H. (New York, NY)
Daymeion, have you ever thought/considered playing both sides of the ball? Is Tedford open to the idea?
Daymeion Hughes (3:06 PM)
I thought about it when I first got here. But he's pretty strict on the two-way. We have a lot of athletes on our team, so there's no need for me to play two-ways.
Mark N. (New York, NY)
Which Pac-10 school has the most attractive cheerleaders?
Daymeion Hughes (3:06 PM)
Probably Arizona State.
Jordan (San Francisco, CA)
With receivers getting taller and taller, it's been surprising to me that the corners have stayed small and quick. How much easier do you think it is for you to cover the 6'5" receivers than the 5'10" corners out there?
Daymeion Hughes (3:07 PM)
I feel like I'm at an advantage because I'm in the middle. Most of the taller receivers are not really that agile. It helps me because I'm taller and more agile.
BearFan (Portland, OR)
What do you do on gameday to get pumped up?
Daymeion Hughes (3:08 PM)
I try to talk to my family right before the game and get some last words of inspiration. I listen to my music on my iPod and the last thing I do before I go out is pray.
Brent (Las Vegas)
Who is the best receiver you ever had to cover?
Daymeion Hughes (3:08 PM)
Probably I played against Mike Williams when he was at USC. As far as our team, Jeff McArthur, he's probably one of the best receivers I've ever seen.
Keith/San Anselmo, CA
Daymeion: How are the coaches preparing the Cal players to play in front of over 100,000 fans at Tennessee?
Daymeion Hughes (3:09 PM)
We've done certain things with speakers and things like that to try and control the noise level. We've always incorporated that into our practices, so it's not really a big thing for us.
GO BEARS!
How do you think the first time players will handle playing at Tenn?
Daymeion Hughes (3:10 PM)
I just try to tell people the speed of the game is going to be a lot faster. I try to give them a crash course to get them mentally prepared, really.
Drew H. (NY, NY)
Daymeion, other than Stanford, is there a team that you most enjoy playing/beating?
Daymeion Hughes (3:11 PM)
I enjoy playing SC probably more than I enjoy playing against Stanford. It's always a high competition level. And I enjoy beating up everybody.
Robbie ((Aston,PA))
ARE YOU ANY GOOD AT THE NEW NCAA FOOTBALL?
Daymeion Hughes (3:11 PM)
Yeah, I play every day. I don't think anyone can beat me with Cal.
Jordan (Oakland, Ca)
With all this media attention, do you think Cal can live up to "The Hype" and take The Pac 10 Crown?
Daymeion Hughes (3:12 PM)
I hope so. The media attention and stuff, that's going to come with the team getting better and better, especially with the program on the rise. We look forward to embracing it.
Jeff (Portland)
Your thoughts on the spread offense. How does Cal play D against it?
Daymeion Hughes (3:13 PM)
We just going to do the same things we always try to do. We study our scouting reports and play hard. We're not going to do anything special, we're just going to lineup and do the things we always do.
Jason Westlake Ca
How will the loss of Tim Mixon affect you and who is going to step in to replace him?
Daymeion Hughes (3:14 PM)
Tim was an emotional leader on the team as well as a vocal leader. He's a redshirt senior. Losing him will really hurt the secondary. But we've grown even tighter in the past couple of weeks with Tim going down. I think there will be no space left.
Jordan (Oakland, CA)
What Other sports did you play in high school?
Daymeion Hughes (3:15 PM)
I played basketball, I ran track and I played tennis.
Mark N. (New York, NY)
Which team will be tougher to defend this year - ASU , USC, or Oregon?
Daymeion Hughes (3:15 PM)
It's hard to say right now. I heard all three teams are good. Oregon is similar to us depth wise, so maybe we'll have a harder time with them. They matchup up with us real well.
Ari Oakland, CA
There is one play in NCAA 2007 that is unstoppable. I won the National Championship on Hiesman level - went undefeated and won every game by 50! I will beat you!!!
Daymeion Hughes (3:16 PM)
Sign on to the EA Nation online my name is Taymoney. That's my user name.
Rock (San Mateo, CA)
Obviously it's pretty exciting knowing what you and the defense are capable of. What are some of your personal goals on the field?
Daymeion Hughes (3:17 PM)
My goal is always the same, be the best player I can as a team. My personal goals go hand in hand with the team. Be the best player I can for the defense and the rest of it will take care of itself.
Dave (Oakland, CA)
Does it motivate you and the Cal D when broadcasters keep saying that the Pac-10 doesn't play any D? Go Bears!
Daymeion Hughes (3:18 PM)
Yeah, it kind of gets under my skin a little bit. I look at that as a challenge like anything else. A lot of times at the beginning of the season, no one really knows what to expect. We were the No. 1 scoring defense in the Pac-10 and we're looking to repeat that.
Khalil Oakland, Ca
I heard that you guys have a family atmosphere how does that help you guys on the field?
Daymeion Hughes (3:19 PM)
It really helps you because you can count on your teammates as a brother and more than just a person you're playing with. We hold each other accountable. It's more of a respect thing and trust. Everything a family has, we have it here.
Brian (Los Angeles, CA)
Outside of next week at Tennessee, which game on the schedule this season are you most excited about?
Daymeion Hughes (3:20 PM)
I'm excited to play against Oregon. I'm excited to play our first home game and probably Stanford because that's going to be my last home game.
Damon ((Los Angeles))
All Cal fans were distressed to see Tim Mixon go down. But I amr eading that Syd'Quan Thompson is a monster. Tell us what's it's like to have SQT on the field with you.
Daymeion Hughes (3:21 PM)
Syd was always like my protege last year. It's great to see him on the field and make something happen. He accepted his role as a backup last year and I think he can step in and make some plays, as well as some other players on defense. I feel good about the guys we have.
RL (Cal)
Have you seen Marshawn's heismann website? What do you think about Mulan being his favorite movie?!?!
Daymeion Hughes (3:22 PM)
Marshawn is a funny person. On and off the field, he's a great guy. He watches a lot of Disney movies and cartoons. It's not a surprise to me. He's a great guy on and off the field.
Daymeion Hughes (3:23 PM)
Make sure everyone tunes in for Tennessee, we're going to try and put on a show for the whole nation.
