Garey was the third overall pick, by the Columbus Crew, in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft. In his rookie year with the Crew, Garey, a forward, scored five goals and registered two assists in 25 appearances. His five goals, during the 2006 season, tied him for the team lead. Garey played his college soccer at the University of Maryland.
