The Pulse (10:28 AM)
Welcome to "The Pulse" ... we'll be live on ESPNEWS and right here in chat at 1 p.m. ET.
The Pulse (10:29 AM)
You help guide the show on Saturdays, so we're looking for your Super Bowl questions for NFL WR Antwaan Randle El and NFL LB Napoleon Harris. And we want your Super Bowl XLI predictions!
The Pulse (10:30 AM)
We're also looking for your take on the NFL future for three former college stars: Ohio State QB Troy Smith, Florida QB Chris Leak and Tennessee WR Robert Meachem.
The Pulse (10:31 AM)
And for all you hoop fans looking for a break from the Super Bowl, send in your take on two of today's early big games: Indiana-Iowa and Southern Illinois-Wichita State.
The Pulse (1:04 PM)
All right everyone, we're live on ESPNEWS and right here in chat for this week's Pulse.
Josh (Miami, FL)
Of all the hall-of-fame finalists, I think Michael Irvin deserves to be in it most. After all, you have Aikman in and Emmit is gonna go in on first ballot, so why not put in him this year? Mike's waited long enough in my mind.
The Pulse (1:05 PM)
And that's one of the things we'll be talking about today. This year's HOF class will be announced at about 2:30, so if you've got a take on Irvin, Art Monk, Thurman Thomas or any of the other candidates, fire away.
Josh (Miami, FL)
What channel will that be on, Pulse
The Pulse (1:08 PM)
We'll be following the news conference on ESPNEWS.
Will Hunt: Asher, Ok.
It's amazing to me that Mark McGuire can't even get 30% or 40% of a vote for the HOF because of his wrong yet legal actions and no one will even mention the fact that Michael Irvin was arrested with prostitutes and drugs, multiple times if I remember correctly. I don't agree with what McGuire did nor do I have a problem with forgiving Irvin for his mistakes, but this sounds hypocritical or racist or maybe both. Maybe this is reason that people who actually play or played the games should have a larger part of HOF decisions than the non-professional athletes who simply report from the outside. I think both players would be elected to the HOF if it were voted on by the players or even the fans.
aj (Trenton,NJ)
I think Irvin and Art Monk should be selected. Both men have waited their turn
Austin (kansas city, mo)
There are plenty of great candidates on this years HOF ballot to choose from, but will Derrick Thomas make the cut and get in?
The Pulse (1:12 PM)
Good question, he's one of a bunch of good defensive candidates, including Richard Dent and Andre Tippett.
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Everyone wants Monk that I can think of, but Kuech and Matthews were stellar linemn, and Thermal Thomas(tm) has stats to rival Monk for consideration...
Josh (Miami, FL)
Baseball is more of a numbers sport than football. I agree it's not right, but people are more lenient towards Irvin because HE DIDN'T USE STEROIDS!!!
Josh (Miami, FL)
Richard Dent I think will have no problem getting in. He was the leader of that 85 Bears defense. By the way, Bears win the Super Bowl tomorrow.
Mark (da cube)
Russ Grimm without a doubt needs to get in...one of the anchor's of that tremendous offensive line in Washington that win 3 Super Bowls...resume almost speaks for itself.
Mike (Grand Rapids, MI)
It's ot what you do off the field, it's what you do on it. Irvin had an excellent career with the Cowboys and what he did off the field shouldn'e be taken in account. Therefore I believe he should be in the hall.
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Matthews didn't miss a game... on an every down contact position.
The Pulse (1:18 PM)
All right, we'll get back to the Canton debate, but what about football in the present? Thoughts on the Super Bowl tomorrow?
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Addai and Wayne, homecoming for the U.
Austin (kc, mo)
Addai went to LSU...not the U! get your stuff together
Mike (Grand Rapids, MI)
Thomas runs the ball and Grossman throws short passes and plays ball-control. Bears win 24-21
Josh (Miami, FL)
I said the Bears would win, but then again I also said the Colts would win. I don't know. I'm just here to watch the Super Bowl. Can't wait!
Jordan (Kansas City)
Colts defense will shut down the run game, bob sanders, and freeney will pressure grossman all game, 27-14 colts
Javier (Orlando, FL)
Hey how's everybody doing? I used to live in Evansville, Indiana (couple hours south of Indy) and I'm a huge Colts fan. I'm just excited that we finally made it to the big dance after all these years of falling short. My question is who do you think is facing the most pressure: Indy's killer offense to outperform Da Bears' defense? Or Da Bears' defense to overcome Peyton Manning and the rest of the guys? Thanks! GO COLTS!
Nolan Samuelson (Gretna, Nebraska)
Has everybody forgoten that the Bears had the best defense in the NFL? All the hype the Colts are getting is terriable, the Bears defense will own!
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
The Bears can match up physically, I think their D can match wits with manning as well, Manning might see a front seven where nobody puts a hand on the ground for some downs so the Colts can't define their blocking assignments... but the key is making Rex force mistakes, how will he control things if the Colts continue strong run D?
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Can the NFL just give the Colts the trophy before the game and save the Bears the embarrassment of getting smoked?
Josh (Miami, FL)
Pulse, if Bears do win, would that be considered as a "superbowl upset" to you. After all, they won more games than the Colts did but I guess Vegas doesn't see it that way.
The Pulse (1:25 PM)
I think it would rank behind the Patriots over the Rams for NE's first title. Maybe like the Broncos over the Packers? An upset that we all forget was an upset with time?
Josh (Miami, FL)
That's why defense wins championships. I don't think Peyton can be stopped but the Bears have some sb experience, unlike the Colts.
Brandon (Tumwater, WA)
If you really think that Manning is going to let his 1st superbowl appearance slip away at the hands of a team that doesnt have a quarterback named Tom Brady. You got another thing comming tomorrow!
Shaun (Grand Rapids,MI)
PREDICTION..This Superbowl Rating will be the worst in years
Erich: (Chicago, IL)
Look people need to quit over estimating the Colts. The Bears have the better overall team, it is just the Peyton Vs. Grossman factor.
Mark (da cube)
I just want a close game...I can't find a reason to get behind either team so as long as it's not a blow out, i'll be happy.
Jammio (Bethpage, NY)
Pulse, Devon Hester is getting too much of a push before Superbowl XLI, can anyone think that a special teams player besides a kicker will get the MVP?
The Pulse (1:28 PM)
Desmond Howard?
Mike (Lakeville, MN)
Don't get me wrong. The Bears are an outstanding team this year. They made the Super Bowl.... But how does this team compare to the 1985 team that won it all, and had one of the greatest defenses ever?
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
The Bears have the better overall team? The same team that barely beat Seattle at home? Yeah, o.k.
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Adam V. is the key-Colts by a FG, Bears beat the spread, under. Slow the game down, run more to limit Grossman's pressure.
Jammio (Bethpage, NY)
I mean between the players in SuperBowl XLI, I believe Devon Hester is an oustanding player, but def. not SuperBowl MVP worthy.
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Get the ball outta Grossman's hands, his WR can make plays after the catch, how much a true cover 2 allows that, and how much the Colts honestly play that are still to be seen. Early downs would be nice times to get Des behind the Dungy 3...
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Let's just say the Colts don't have Fred Thomas playing corner for them, so you can forget about Rex Grossman having a decent passing day like he did against the Saints.
Jared (Topeka, KS)
Is it such a bad thing that I hope Peyton never wins a Super Bowl and surpasses Jim Kelly and Marino as the best QB to never win it all? Or is it worse that I hope Eli beats his big bro in the Super Bowl?
Josh (Miami, FL)
Hey the Bears only lost 3 games this year. THREE! Everyone overlooked the Bears gainst the Saints and look what happened. I guarantee Rex is gonna have a big game.
Shaun (Grand Rapids,MI)
I'm not even excited to watch the SuperBowl, I'll watch but not with as much excitement as previous years
Larry (Chicago)
Everybody conveniently forgets the bashing Rex Grossman has taken leading up to the Super Bowl. He's in Florida and he wants to prove people wrong.
Mike (Lakeville, MN)
I'm routing for the Colts. Watching the Chicago Bears hoist the Lombardi trophy is like watching hell unfold before your eyes.
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Harper a game day decision, how much that influences the line may be more of a key than actual game play on the field...
The Pulse (1:33 PM)
At least it's a football injury this year for Harper.
Mike (Grand Rapids, MI)
SBXLI will have a great TV rating just because of the Urlacher-Manning match-up
Jason (Kansas City, MO)
I am usually loyal to my conference (AFC) but I want and would love for the BEARS to win Super Bowl XLI. GO BEARS!!
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Bears were four returns away from a game over .500, so you need to limit mistakes and cover kicks well. Detroit and Green Bay squared off well with them late in the years.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Nick Harper's a game-day decision? What, did his wife make the trip to Miami too?
Shaun (Grand Rapids,MI)
Bears fans are such Homers...the NFC sucks...Colts are in the AFC...it's much like the SEC in football...Super tough conference, Alot of great teams and when it came to the Championship it paid off
Josh (Miami, FL)
I'm tired of people bashing Rex. He's played in Miami before while at UF so he has more experience than Peyton. I love Rex. He's my favorite player from UF since Emmit
The Pulse (1:36 PM)
Seriously, you're using his college experience on the road in Miami as a plus for tomorrow's game? That's a reach ...
Jordan (Kansas City)
I think harper will play, a game time decision, when the game is the super bowl, cmon now he will play
Billy (Philadelphia, Pa)
It's Manning's turn plain and simple. He beat Brady and Pats no way does Grossman win a SB b4 Peyton.
Shaun (Grand Rapids,MI)
Bears fans are banking on their "great Defense" to stop the greatest QB ever...I think i'll go with Peyton
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Arsenal losing 1-0 now to Middlesbrough...thank God the Flyers aren't on until 7.
The Pulse (1:40 PM)
Do those of us with Tivo a favor and keep your EPL scores to yourself!
Peyton (Indy)
I just hope we don't mess up our routes and I hope our O-line plays worth their weight.
Shaun (Grand Rapids,MI)
Question for the World...If Rex plays So-So...Do the Bears dump him and go after say Garcia?
Nathan (Spokane, WA)
When has a great offense ever torn up a great defense in the superbowl. Bears defense will dominate leaving it in the hands of Rex to not blow it.
The Pulse (1:46 PM)
We have any ACC basketball fans in here? We're going to check in on Clemson up next/
The Pulse (1:46 PM)
They're having a rough go of it vs. Georgia Tech at the moment.
The Pulse (1:47 PM)
Also UConn looking for a much-needed win against Rutgers.
The Pulse (1:47 PM)
Any fans of those teams out there with something to say about their teams?
Jammio (Bethpage, NY)
Do you think UConn has any chance of making the tourney with a loss a Rutgers
Josh (Miami, FL)
I was a Clemson believer, but I'm starting to get off their bandwagon. They need a win vs Georgia Tech in my mind
Josh (Miami, FL)
UConn can't even beat my highschool team right now. And that's sad, considering we're playing like UCONN right now.
Grant (Louisville, KY)
A win vs Rutgers says nothing. A loss means something though: NIT
Denham Brown (Tulsa)
I'm the greatest uconn guard/forward ever!!
Bronson (New Philadelphia, OH)
The only way you make the tourney with a 6-6 Power Forward (Adrein), is if you play in the SWAC.
Josh (Miami, FL)
UF showed why their the best team in the country. Even though it was gainst Vandy, they came back in the second half and won, something UCONN doesn't know how to do for quite a while
The Pulse (1:54 PM)
Not sensing a lot of college basketball energy in here. I guess it's not March yet, eh?
Mark (OK)
As a Sooner fan I am just pretending that this season isn't happening.
Jammio (Bethpage, NY)
BUTLER BUTLER BUTLER
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
College hoops on Super Bowl weekend? Good luck.
Rupert (Gainesville)
I think Carolina is more deeper and talented than Florida, but I take Florida because of their experience, chemistry, and intangibles.
Don (Vegas)
UNLV RUNNIN REBELS will stop BYU'S home court winning streak at 27 today
LeFrederick (Brooklyn)
Butler is overrated, the best small school out there is either Oral Roberts, or VCU.
The Pulse (1:58 PM)
How are they overrated with wins against Indiana, Gonzaga, Tennessee and Purdue?
Dingo (Beptford, NJ)
Super Bowl on College Gameday? Godd Luck.
The Pulse (1:59 PM)
How about the NBA? Any pro hoops fans in the audience?
Shaun (Grand Rapids,MI)
I have a Major problem with Kobe being suspended and not Lebron james...They both hit star players above the face accidentally (Lebron hit Wade in the face quite hard)and Kobe was taken out for a game Lebron wasnt. What a joke the NBA brass is in on this one.
Josh (Miami, FL)
How did Josh Howard not make the allstargame? I can understand why Melo didn't make it, but there's no excuse why Josh isn't in it!
Jammio (Bethpage, NY)
No. hence I have to live in NY with by far one of the worst current teams in the NBA to me.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
I think I have set the unofficial Pulse record for copycat Pulse posters. Someone in Bristol owes me a plaque or something.
The Pulse (2:01 PM)
Speaking of All-Stars, we were debating in the office today about whether or not Vince Carter is a futue Hall of Famer? This will be his sixth All-Star appearance, and he's still relatively young. What's your take?
Phil (Montpur Falls NY)
Not sure if i'm an NBA fan , as I like the knicks and not certain if they qualify.
Doug (East L.A.)
Melo not making it is an absolute joke. I mean seriously, Shaq played like 6 games, and he got in as a starter, while Melo leads the leage in scoring and gets snubbed all together.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Vince Carter definitely has the crdentials. Shame his teamw ould get slaughtered by the Mavs or Suns in a Championship format though...
Jammio (Bethpage, NY)
Vince Carter should be a Hall of Famer because of the level of intensity that he brought to the NBA. He literally changed the game single-handedly.
The Pulse (2:04 PM)
Fans in Toronto might argue about the intensity he displays ...
Sam Mitchell (Toronto)
Not as long as that guy tanks whenever he wants a trade.
Shaun (Grand Rapids,MI)
Everyone is talking about Shaq beign back and Lebron and Arenas. Yet quietly after the addition of C-webb the Pistons have flourished with him as the starter with more additions to come via trading Nazr or Dale Dave.
Mike (Grand Rapids, MI)
The Bulls have so much talent that's not being utilized. Scott Skiles has to go!
Josh (Miami, FL)
If Vince wins a title, I think he's a hall-of-famer. It's tough for me to decide right now.
Shaun (Grand Rapids,MI)
Vicne Carter shouldnt have made the all star team. Joe Johnson is the ONLY player on that team and he averages 25PPG..Carter has Jefferson AND Kidd.
Jack (Princeton)
I can't believe Nash isn't starting. Fans like flashly, fancy no-look passing basketball in an allstar game, Nash will give it to you.
David (Toronto, Ontario)
No question Vince can play, but can he win? If Vince was a Hall of Famer, he wouldn't have gone to his graduation the day of Game 7 aganist Philly (When he missed the game winner)
Shaun (Grand Rapids,MI)
Vince winning an NBA title being a starter and not clinging onto a hopeless career ALA Gary payton is his only chance
Wayne (Toronto)
Well, Canada air kind of takes the effort out of your system, but still, the man shouldn't have admitted to it! Scalliwag!
Dikembe (Deep in the Heart of Texas)
Vince is the best player I've played against since Bill Russell.
Shaun (Grand Rapids,MI)
Who's a more overrated player in the NBA right now then Vince Carter?
Josh (Miami, FL)
Fans in Toronto really hate on Vince. What's up with that.
The Pulse (2:10 PM)
Tends to happen when a guy admits he quit on the team in order to get a trade ...
Shaun (Grand Rapids,MI)
Just call Vicne Carter Rex Grossman with slightly more talent
The Pulse (2:11 PM)
It all comes back to Grossman this weekend.
Josh (Miami, FL)
Well, the Raptors suck. I can't blame him on that. At least the Nets were a contender. Mabey they can trade him to the Bulls.
The Pulse (2:12 PM)
Uh, aren't the Raptors ahead of the Nets at the moment?
LeCraig (Calgary)
Certain guys could get away with it though. Vince just can't though. Poo Poo Head.
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Randy moss segue time...
Alexander (Tulsa)
I'd rather have vince carter playing qb this weekend over grossman if i were lovie smith.
Josh (Miami, FL)
Grossman is not terrible while everybody thinks that. Bears have only lost 6 games while the Bears starter. Hate on that!
The Pulse (2:14 PM)
Just call him the NFL's Ken Dorsey.
The Pulse (2:14 PM)
Getting back to the big game, where is everyone watching tomorrow?
Josh (Miami, FL)
I'm here in Miami for the super bowl. I don't care if it rains. I'll leave though if the game turns into a blowout.
jason (holland, MI)
home, where drunk drivers can't mess with me, lol
The Pulse (2:16 PM)
Everyone following along on ESPNEWS right now and see that miracle shot by Rutgers?
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
wow Rutgers...
phil (montour falls, NY)
great shot!!!!
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
good for Rutgers. I hate UConn almost as much as I hate Red Sox fans...
The Pulse (2:17 PM)
47-47, heading to overtime as Rutgers hits the last-second 3-pointer.
The Pulse (2:18 PM)
All right, where were we. Plans for the big game ...
Ash (Pallet Town)
Imagine if rutgers still had Quincy Douby.....
Brian (Miami)
I'm goin too. Who cares if its a blowout. Stay and enjoy the atmosphere of a super bowl. Have a few hot dogs. Oscar Meyer if you will.
Austin (kc, mo)
from a La-Z-Boy recliner, with a beer in both hands (no remote needed), in front a 56 inch wide-screen (I love ESPNHD!!!)
Shaun (Grand Rapids,MI)
I'm watching the Gameon my 52" Plasma with Paris Hilton. During halftime we will make a Public Service Announcment on kids and Brains
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
I will be watching with one bleary eye through the emptied contents of a bottle of Patron tequila...
Mike (Grand Rapids, MI)
Going to a friend's house. Foosball tourney, dart tourney, 3-ball tourney, tons of food, big-screen high-def TV. Perfect
Don (Vegas)
Sports book 15 bucks all you can eat and drink
Kennan (Ohio)
Watching the game at home, to avoid all my ignorant friends asking the most retarded questions you can imagine.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Do you know that kid from Rutgers - Farmer? - wasn't even lined up on the free throw line when he grabbed that rebound and went coast-to-coast on that game tying three? Great stuff.
Shaun (Grand Rapids,MI)
Retarded questions from people in Ohio? NO WAY i would never have imagined! lol
Michael (Grand Rapids)
I'm gonna snuggle in a blanket by the fireplace and turn the voume way down, and listen to classical music while i watch the game.
The Pulse (2:21 PM)
To each their own ...
The Pulse (2:23 PM)
All right, let's get back to the game on the field. Who or what will be the X-factor?
Josh (Miami, FL)
I'll like to see a kicking battle between Vinateri and Robbie Gould. That'll be a fun matchup.
Laurence (Chicago)
The Bears being treated like a stepchild the past two weeks. That's the X-factor.
The Pulse (2:24 PM)
Ah, the old respect card.
Nathan (Northwest)
The offensive line for Indy. Will they give peyton time to pick apart that secondary?
Trenton (Dover, OH)
Dallas Clark will be a huge factor.
Austin (kc, mo)
Is anyone else disappointed with the non-typical pre-game press so far? I mean no one has talked trash at all yet!
jason (holland, MI)
the matchup to watch is Indy's receivers against Chi's DB's.
tom (Burlington, VT)
No doubt, Adam Vinatieri. I bet both my big toes he kicks another game winner.
Paul ((Memphis,TN))
The Colts O-line,you know the Bears are gunnin for Peyton, and we all know he can get rattled and happy feet
Nathan (Northwest)
Let the game be decided on the field, not it the papers!
Don (Vegas)
If the Bears are getting blown out will Tank Johnson go POSTAL
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Clark will not outrun Urlacher, so Moorehead and Addai need to pick it pu, Chicago probably goes at the top 3 Colts in the pass game all out...
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
What will be the X-factor? Wow, is there really even one? Desmond Clark. Because the Colts are going to put eight men in the box and dare Grossman to beat them. He won't have much time, and will probably be dumping alot of passes to the TE.
Mason (Detroit, MI)
The coaches will be the X-Factor. Whoever uses their strengths to their advantages will be the victor in this year's prestigious Super Bowl.
Josh (Miami, FL)
Yeah, theres always trash talking. I thought Rex was going to lose it Tuesday. Guess he decided to keep the anger inside and let it out tomorrow.
Shaun (Grand Rapids,MI)
This superbowl is boring...Sports is about trash talking...The NE/Indy game was far more exciting then this game will be
The Pulse (2:28 PM)
Sports is about trash talking? And there goes our society ...
Joseph (Midd. NJ)
People were talkin bout Devin Hester this year like it was a miracle, when really he was doin the same thing in college thats hes doin in the NFL.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
And here I thought sports was about commercialism...what a downer.
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
If the Bears build any kinf od lead and can put the Colts into a third and long gameplan then maybe Israel can make some pass rush plays off the bench, or their deep set of defensive ends...
Sponge (New York)
Peyton Manning. All the attentions on him. He needs to expose the Bears defense in order to win.
Shawn (The Grand Canyon)
Sports is about having fun and developing a healthy spirit and body. Who cares who wins? As long as they have fun.
The Pulse (2:30 PM)
Sarcasm noted
Josh (Miami, FL)
It makes the game more interesting. Ask Jeremy Stevens when he looked like an idiot last year after his trash talking
The Pulse (2:31 PM)
Ok, we're getting ready for the Hall of Fame news conference. Let's run through some candidates.
The Pulse (2:31 PM)
Vote yes or no and explain your vote.
The Pulse (2:31 PM)
First up: Thurman Thomas
Josh (Miami, FL)
Yes! No question! Next!
jason (holland, MI)
thurman, yes! he's a huge reason for the Bills success, along with kelly
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Yes, numbers weigh out...
The Pulse (2:33 PM)
How about Art Monk?
Stewy (Dayton)
No doubt. Thomas had a stellar career and should get in. Also, he has two last names. Any guy who makes it through life like that deserves some credit.
Mike (Grand Rapids, MI)
Thurman Thomas lit the Giants up in SB25. Too bad he couldn't be the 2nd player with the game MVP on the losing team
jason (holland, MI)
Monk, no! good reciever, but not hall of fame quality
tom* (parkville, md)
I desperately hope Charlie Sanders gets selected. He was my favorite player when I was growing up and would delite my inner 10-year-old.
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Life imitates Art, yes....
The Pulse (2:35 PM)
Michael Irvin?
Rashard (Joppatowne)
ArtMonk! Mr.Redskin! Of course, put him in the HOF
Josh (Miami, FL)
Monk, yeah. He's waited too long. This year is his year.
The Pulse (2:37 PM)
So no for Monk and Derrick Thomas
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
no Art Monk...
Mickey (Anaheim)
Michael Irvin is a jerk. He is cocky, ruthless, and has a mouth the size of Texas itself. Of course he should get in!
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Russ Grimm is just getting jerked everywhere these days...
Mike (Grand Rapids, MI)
Irvin, as stated earlier, should be in despite of his off-field antics. It's all about the playing field and the stats
Mike (Grand Rapids, MI)
Art Monk out
jason (holland, MI)
Derrick Thomas deserves it more than Monk
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Michael Irvin's gonna make it....ugh.
Rashard (Joppatowne)
Ray Guy was eliminated? Ray Guy wanted to tackle somebody and he may be the best punter in history. I am dissapointed!!
Marc (Malden, MA)
Everyone who didn't vote for Art Monk should have his right to vote taken away.
The Pulse (2:43 PM)
Sorry about that, where were we.
Scott (Greenville, SC)
Derrick Thomas does not deserve it more than Monk but, he does deserve strong consideration.
Scott (Greenville, SC)
Monk, Irvin, Thomas, Matthews, Grimm and on veternas guy...sorry, I am not as fmailiar with those guys.
Josh (Miami, FL)
A punter getting into the hall is like a closer trying to get in. It's very difficult. is a punter even in the hall of fame?
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Okay, Ray Guy always gets snubbed, his leaping catch of a high snap kept the Raiders on top of the Redskins in their rout to a trophy...
Mike (Grand Rapids, MI)
Werhli in? Hmmm.
Josh (Miami, FL)
Monk, Thomas, and Grimm definitely deserves to be in. As for everyone else, I don't know yet.
Scott (Greenville, SC)
Art Monk should not be penalized for playing the game with class. He set more records during his time than most remember. It's unfortunate that self promoting WR's gain consideration before solid players who have respect for the game, team, community and life altogether.
Rashard (Joppatowne)
Doug Williams was right. Art Monk deserved to be a Hall Of Famer.
tom* (parkville, md)
When does the announcement come down?
The Pulse (2:46 PM)
It's in. This year's class is: Roger Wuehrle, Gene Hickerson, Michael Irvin, Thurman Thomas, Bruce Matthews and someone I'm forgetting ...
The Pulse (2:47 PM)
And Charlie Sanders as the sixth.
Josh (Miami, FL)
No Russ Grimm?! No Art Monk!? That's bull!
tom* (parkville, md)
I'd vote for Gary Zimmerman. The guy made the all-decade team for the '80's and the '90's.
Austin (kc, mo)
Irvin has the same stats pretty much as Keyshawn. Do you honestly consider Keyshawn a hall of famer?
Jake S. (New York, New York)
Michael Irvin may be an idiot but he definitely deserves it as a player.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
You can't deny Michael irinv is a HOF player. The guy is an absolute creep of a person, but he should be in.
Jake S. (New York, New York)
Are you kidding me Ray Guy is the best punter in NFL history...they only give the nod to position players..14 seasons and no nod that is crazy
DELGADO(POUGHKEEPSIE,N.Y.)
RAY GUY SHOULD HAVE MADE IT.ALL THE RAIDERS MAKE IT ON THE FIRST TRY.THIS WAS A FIX-VOTING.
Josh (Miami, FL)
Crazier than Art Monk not being in? Don't think so. When will Monk get in.
Todd (Louisville)
Art Monk yes, Micheal Irvin Yes. Two very very good receivers.
The Pulse (2:51 PM)
Meanwhile, we're live at Marquette for the haltime ceremony retiring Dwyane Wade's jersey.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Tom Sawyer is the retirement song for D-Wade's jersey? I guess they couldn't cue up I Ran by A Flock of Seagulls...
Rashard (Joppatowne)
Marquette is set to retire D-Wade's jersey. #3 is now down in Marquette history. Congrats, D-Wade
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Irvin got it? Wow, I expected him to have a wait , after Emmit. More good vibes for the Reggie Wayne big game tommorrow.
Troy (Arlington, TX)
I can't wait to hear how self-serving Michael Irvin will become on ESPN now that he is in the Hall, he's going to be so full of himself...oh wait...
Mike (Grand Rapids, MI)
I'm surprised that Kuchenberg isn't in yet. Langer is in and Kuche was just as good a lineman as Langer.
Austin (kc, mo)
Irvin isn't a Hall of Famer! He was decent at best! Emmitt won those rings for him! He was a solid POSESSION WR!
Josh (Miami, FL)
Art Monk in my mind is a better receiver than Irvin. Do the voters have something against him or something
tom* (parkville, md)
The odd thing about the football HOF voting is when they reduce the list to the finalists, one could make a strong agruement for everyone on the list.
The Pulse (2:56 PM)
It would be interesting to see what would happen if baseball used the same method.
Scott (Greenville, SC)
Congratulations to all of those who made the HOF. They are all deserving individuals. But, the voters blew it again! Art Monk deserves better than this. Maybe he should start becoming a shady character and resort to violent behavior and acting like an ass to get noticed.
A.J. (New Orleans)
Irvin should be in the HoF, he made Aikman's career and Aikman got in.
The Pulse (2:58 PM)
All right, we're heading toward the final four of today's show.
The Pulse (2:59 PM)
Lots of football to come. We've got Vikings LB Napoleon Harris talking Super Bowl, as well as draft prospects Chris Leak and Robert Meachem.
Ron (Duluth, Minn)
Michael Irvin may be considered alot of things, but he is clearly Hall of Fame worthy. Is he a self promoter??? Sure. A T.O. enabler?? You bet. But on the field, he was a leader, alomst like a coach out there. People like to mention his lack of touchdowns, Irvin would have had about 50 more touchdowns, but Irvin, not the fastest guy, would always get tackled at the 1 yard line, setting up Emmitt for the scores. If not for all of the off the field troubles, Irvin would have probably been a Hall of Famer sooner.
Kerry (DC)
HOW IN THE HELL does Art Monk not make the HOF????? Makes it almost as much of a joke as the NBA all-star starters.
Mike (Grand Rapids, MI)
If it rains Sunday in Miami, and there's a 40% chance of it, there's a chance that the game will be decided on the running game. If that's the case, the Bears definately win.
Josh (Miami, FL)
Richard Dent was the best defensive player on the Bears defense. How he missed the HOF is a big letdown on the voters part.
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Irvin did that by design. He took the hit from the catch inside the 5 to set up run attempts so Dallas could manage time in a Norv Turner offense...
Juan (Riverbank, CA)
How long does Art Monk has to get in the Hall. Irvin does not deserve to get in before Monk.
Rudy (Springfield, VA)
The Pro Football Hall of Fame is an absolute joke. Its a mockery that Michael Irvin is voted in and Art Monk is left out. Monk has close to 200 more receptions than Irvin, but I guess being a loud mouth clown carries more weight than having class.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Dent was better than Mike Singletary? You didn't watch much football, did you...
Nicholas (San Jose, CR)
2 WRs eligible for the Hall of Fame, 1 has more receptions, more receiving yards and more touchdowns. Keep in mind that this receiver also has a clean record. Who do you choose?
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
irvin is not a clown, he may get a bit loud in making a point but it's only his passion for the game that results. Don't hate the playa, love the game.,
Mike Lynnfield, MA
To me Derrick Thomas should be in the hall because he was LT after LT and Merriman before him, he was unstopable at times and could flat out change a game and how an offense could operate
Hunter (Richmond, Virginia)
Art Monk ranks better in most statistics than Irvin and has much more class. The reason Irvin made it is because he is a member of the media. To put Irvin in before Monk is crazy.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Do you know that Mike Singletary made TEN Pro Bowls, was Defensive Player of the Year twice, and was elected to both the College Football AND Pro Football HOF? Richard Dent couldn't hold Singletary's jock, and that's the brass tax right there, baby.
Aaron (Watertown, WI)
Count me as a Ray Guy supporter. I mean, there is not one single punter in the Hall. What the heck are they looking for?
Josh (Miami, FL)
Dent was the SB MVP that year. That's all I'm saying.
Timmy (Potomac, MD)
If Michael Irvin is better than Art Monk than by those standards Rex Grossman is better than Dan Marino
Rudy (Springfield, VA)
Mr. Murder should check the stats, Monk has more receiving yards and more rushing yards. Irvin is not only a clown, but also an idiot. I guess the squeaky wheel gets the oil.
Juan (Riverbank, CA)
If there is a kiker in the hall. There should be a punter. Guy got snubbed.
Kerry (DC)
Just further fuel to the adage that nice guys do indeed finish last. Still, I'm willing to bet Art is happy to have the endearment of the fans...just too bad the sportswriters get to be our "voice" when it comes to the HOF. And I do think Dent at least should be there as well...possibly D. Thomas.
Scott (Greenville, SC)
I guess Irvin had more catches than Monk? No..wait, that is not true. Maybe more receiving yards...uh, well nope, not more than Monk. Well it is clearly the longevity and consistency including more consecutive games with a catch than Monk, right??? No?!?! Well, can someone please explain to me how this voting takes place???? Must be that the Dart did not hit Art Monk's name this year. What a complete Joke this part is of the best sport in the world. I know one person that is not upset and that is Art Monk...why???? because, he has class.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Just because you were a SB MVP doesn't mean you should be in the HOF> The best argument for Dent being in the HOF is that his linemate Dan Hampton made it, a guy who wasn't statistically as strong as Dent.
The Pulse (3:18 PM)
All right, moving away from the past for now. How about the future? As in this year's draft class.
The Pulse (3:19 PM)
Chris Leak is coming up soon. He's facing an iffy NFL future after Senior Bowl week, but can he make it?
Timmy (Potomac, MD)
the only reason monk didn't make it is because he didn't talk to the media...he wasn't being distant, he was just a quiet guy, much like marvin harrison who will probably be a first-ballot hall of famer
The Pulse (3:19 PM)
We'll give Timmy the last word on Monk.
Josh (Miami, FL)
Leak I think will be a decent quarterback in the NFL. Not great, but he'll be pretty good.
The Pulse (3:21 PM)
That's an optimistic outlook at this point. Sounds like a lot of the draft experts are saying second day at best.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Chris Leak didn't get a fair shake at the Senior Bowl because the South's O-line was AWFUL. If any of those lineman get drafted on Day 1, Leak ought to sue somebody.
Jake S. (New York, New York)
Pulse help me out here what ever happened to Paul Posluszny he was a top 5 pick last year now he is no where to be seen.
The Pulse (3:22 PM)
He was at the Senior Bowl, sounds like a borderline first-round pick if you listen to Kiper, McShay, etc. Probably second round.
Josh (Miami, FL)
Tom Brady was second day, and look at him.
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Leak is a winner, he isn't about measurables, if you're there in seven I want the Raiders to make that call. A coach in NFLE is ready to work with you, we're talking two years of full time play there and here. That should put you in place to be part of a pro team as a player and develop leans towards coaching as well, if you're as smart as the game tape shows we could be talking some great chances in new parts of the field.
Aaron (Watertown, WI)
Leak is a case where the later he gets picked, the better off he'll be. If he gets picked in the 5th round, and his team gives him a fair chance, he'll turn out just fine. If he goes in the 2nd round and starts right away, he'll bust.
SGT Tipps, Schweinfurt, Germany
Chris Leak could possibly do well in the NFL, as long as he has three things: A good head coach, a good offensive line and mentorship from veterans in the league. If he does not have all of the three, he will struggle during the beginning of his career.
Tom (Denver, CO)
Chris Leak was a great college prospect but he's really limited in the pros. He doesn't have great size, arm strength, or mobility. His best quality, his preparation, is a requirement in the NFL, not a great added bonus like it is in college. It's very, very rare that a QB without a certain level of physical tools can succeed in the NFL and odds are Leak won't be one. That doesn't I wouldn't like him as our backup QB though.
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
I think five would be a steal as well, let him mature into the task, he has tremendous poise.
Juan (Riverbank, CA)
Leak is a better choice than Quinn in the first round. Quinn smells like a bust in the NFL, he cant get it done in a big game against a top 10 ranked team.
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Leak will practice to win and play to win. That's the starting point you need.
Rob (Ann Arbor)
Leak to me looks like a good project qb that will have to sit for a year or two. Given that he is likely second day, there won't be overwhelming pressure to get him in there quickly. Carolina comes to mind as a team that will need to start looking at a future qb, and perhaps Seattle or Kansas City as well. Teams that are solid now, but are getting older at QB.
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Don't bash Quinn, he's had 400 plusmpts and only 7 picks each of the last two years.
The Pulse (3:27 PM)
How about those guys at the top? Who would you take: Quinn or Russell?
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Russell. No doubt.
Rob (Ann Arbor)
Al Davis has to take Russell, he loves the flashy guy behind center. Russell to Moss...ouch! Quinn doesn't impress me too much. I'd be shocked if the Lions took him at 2, more likely he slides out of the top 5.
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Win-win. Both are winners. Quinn has an immediate shot fromt he reps he's thrown, more comp. than Russel had attempts in each of his first 2 years. Russel improved every year despite the fact his state was a disaster zone and he has undeniable physical presence. Bradshaw said it best during his bowl game-throw were they 'aint. Russel can see the whole field to do just that.
Josh (Miami FL)
Russell over Quinn, and if I were Miami Id pick Leak over Smith too
Brian (Brooklyn)
Russell has the bigger arm and won just as much if not more than Quinn
Nick (Apple Valley, MN)
Quinn! Russell is just like Daute Cullpepper and look how he is doing! O ya and Juan from Riverbank, CA is stupid! There is no way Leak is better than Quinn! Even if Quinn didn't win the "Big Game"
Juan (Riverbank, CA)
Russell. That does not mean the Raiders is the right team for him.
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Quinn has not had a negative turnover ratio in three years time. He's run for more yards than he has lost in the Qb sack stats despite so many passes thrown...
Aaron (Watertown, WI)
Doesn't matter to me unless the Packers trade up.
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Three years Quinn gives an equal chance to win, started every year, repped more completions than most college QB threw, not counting practice throws... he can pick it up from day one.
Jake S. (New York, New York)
Quinn no doubt...russell had a up and down season he just happened to have a good game vs. Norte Dame...you have to look at the season not just one game. Quinn
Rob (Ann Arbor)
THe Packers would never trade up to take a QB! With Brett coming back, there is no way they move up to take a QB, doing so says whaszt to Aaron Rodgers? Moving up to take Adrian Peterson, yes...but a QB no way
Ephraim R. (Maple Shade, NJ)
seriously, is there any statistical connection between winning in college and winning in the pros?
Josh (Florida)
Aaron Rogers will be in his fifth year by the time Favre retires.
Nick (Apple Valley, MN)
If the hated Packers would trade up they wouldn't pick Peterson! They would take either defense (Alan Branch) or a receiver!
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Russel improved every year and had career high in rushing this season to show he can take on extra tasks. The only games his pick/td ratio were negative he evened it out running and converting 2 pt. attempt...
PADDY HIGGINBOTHAM (UK)
HOW DO YOU WATCH AMERICAN SPORTS IN THE UK?
The Pulse (3:39 PM)
ESPN360!
Ephraim R. (Maple Shade, NJ)
I'm just saying, look at the list of superbowl QBs and you'll see plenty of unremarkable college careers.
Wingo (Deptford, NJ)
Ironically, I'm watching UK sports in the US...just got done watching Arsenal draw 1-1 with Middlesbrough.
The Pulse (3:43 PM)
All right, that's it, Wingo is hereby banned for a week for spoiling that score.
Aaron (Watertown, WI)
Paddy, I'm more interested in watching UK sports here. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to find audio or video feeds of Aston Villa.
Rob (Ann Arbor)
hmm...let's see so peyotn manning and rex grossman sucked in college, not to mention tom brady, donavan mcnabb, ben roethlisberger, et al
Josh (Miami, FL)
Grossman didn't suck in college. He was one of the greats at UF. Everybody SHUT UP with the Rex Grossman bashing.
The Pulse (3:49 PM)
All right, that's going to just about do it for this week's Pulse. Any final thoughts on the Super Bowl?
Aaron (Watertown, WI)
If the Bears win, Stephen Colbert's head explodes.
Josh (Miami, FL)
Ironically, Robbie Gould will kick the gamewinner and Rex Grossman is SB MVP. Bears 30 Colts 27 in overtime. That's right, REX GROSSMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!
Zac Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA)
Colts win, Manning's going to Disneyworld, and Robbie Gould is a Pittsburgh Hater.
Nick (Apple Valley, MN)
Colts-27 Bear-24grossman plays well but Vinatieri wins another Super Bowl...something Vanderjacdt could never do!!
Mr.Murder (One Raider Nation)
Colts by 3, Adam V wins another...
Juan (Riverbank, CA)
Colts 34 Bears 24
Ephraim R. (Maple Shade, NJ)
Colts 4, Bears 3 on a last second safety on a botched punt attempt.
The Pulse (3:53 PM)
All right, same time next week!
