Chat with Fran Fraschilla
![]() |
Fraschilla spent 23 years on the sidelines as a college basketball coach before joining ESPN as an broadcast analyst. He guided both Manhattan (1993, 1995) and St. John's (1998) to the NCAA Tournament in his nine seasons as a Division I head coach, leaving New Mexico following the end of the 2001-02 season.

Buzzmaster (3:46 PM)
We're just waiting for Fran to get out of a meeting and he'll be joining us. Been a long day for Fran so far as he just landed in Bristol after traveling.
Brian (Mobile)
Whatever Buzz
Buzzmaster (3:48 PM)
Why has everyone been so cranky today?
Lane (Kukuihaele, HI)
He should remember not to move his pivot foot.
Bob F (Chicago)
Everyone here is a BC fan, that's why
Lane (Kukuihaele, HI)
Not a Happy After-Valentines Day for some people...
Big Joe (Trenton, NJ)
Buzz, you can't post anything? There's not much incentive to sit here and read NOTHING!
Travis (Canada)
Buzz, we're cracky because we have to work for a living and not enjoy your playboy lifestyle of free worldwide travel and food/drink!
John (Dallas)
So Buzz, you been saving our questions since 3?
Buzzmaster (3:54 PM)
Yup. Saving as many as I can.
Patrick (Brookfield, WI)
I'm not cranky, because i just got out of school!
Big Joe (Trenton, NJ)
Thank you Buzz, my sincerest apologies...
Alex (Syracuse)
Offer some NCAABB insight, Buzz
Buzzmaster (3:56 PM)
I don't know about insight, but we can talk some hoops. I'm always game for that.
Bob F (Chicago)
Buzz give us your final four
Buzzmaster (3:57 PM)
Right now, I'm going with UCLA, Florida, Texas A-M, Pitt.
Buzzmaster (3:57 PM)
How do you like that cluster?
John (Dallas)
Thanks Buzz, UCLA!!!!
Skeeter (Nashville)
Pitt? you are dumb
Darius (Chicago)
Duke's gonna play spoiler this year!!!
mark (Nashville)
Pitt??? so much for insight..huh!
chauncey (teaneck)
no boston college in there huh?
Patrick (Brookfield, WI)
Wisconsin's not in the final four... that's what's wrong with your cluster
Buzzmaster (3:59 PM)
Can't please everybody. And the Final Four usually isn't the ones who we think will be there. So you have to throw some unexpected ones out there.
Zach(ft. wayne0
um wow why do you pick texas a&m and pitt over north carolina? north carolina probably has the deepest team
Buzzmaster (3:59 PM)
See my last post.
Jacqueline (Madison, WI)
Pitt? Gotta question your sanity there. I've watched them play a few times, most notably when they played @ Wisconsin and I wasn't particularly impressed. I don't see Pitt making it that far at all.
Ryan (Walford, Ia)
Buzz tell Darius he's nuts, they dont deserve to even make the dance, way overrated, and no good!!
John (Dallas)
Yeah Duke will spoil everyone bracket who picks them for more then 1 win.
ben boston
what kind of meeting is Fraschella in?
Buzzmaster (4:02 PM)
He's meeting with TV producers. I think he said they have a meeting every so often to evaluate how everyone does on-camera.
Zach(Ft. Wayne)
Well okay I have to agree on the fact that you have to pick some surprises but I would say on any given night there are teams that could beat both of those teams UNC being one of them...here is mine Florida, UCLA, North Carolina, and then probably Arizona
Ted (Richmond)
Leave the Buzz alone. You wanted 4 picks, he gave 'em to you. Those are his picks, not yours. Can't pick 'em all, and there's still plenty left to play, and more players to get suspended for drugs or academic reasons. They won't fail you, look at Gonzaga and BC. They were looking pretty good till about 2 or 3 weeks ago. GO HOKIES!!!
AC (LA)
Arizona? Now that is funny.
Barpa Jim (Huntersville, NC)
Don't worry Buzz, I've finally made it on here after a long day of work.
Rick (PA)
north carolina is too erratic they cant string more than four wins together they are just incapable of putting that many quality wins up in a row the only long win streak they had was against scrub non conference teams
Bobby (Wisconsin)
What are the chances of Alando Tucker being drafted in the first round
Buzzmaster (4:05 PM)
Unfortunately, if he goes, he might not go until late. Or at least that's what I've been hearing. He's a great college player, but a tweener in the NBA.
Cameron (Brookfield, WI)
Well... depending on the bracket... I've got Wisconsin, UCLA, Georgetown, Ohio State
Jacqueline (Madison, WI)
Hey Buzz, who's your pick for POY?
Buzzmaster (4:07 PM)
I'd say right now there are only two real candidates - Alando Tucker and Kevin Durant.
Brian (Mobile)
Buzzmaster is a tweener at the Big Level too.....According to the Suits.
Chris (Springfield, MA)
ive got Wisconsin, g'town, pitt, and florida
Rick H. (Selah, Wa.)
Toughest conference this year? PAC -10?
Buzzmaster (4:08 PM)
From top to bottom, it has to be, I'd say. There are more quality teams in their bottom half than the other conferences.
Rob (Tucson)
Pittsburgh isnt very good offensively and will be lucky to make it to Sweet 16. Georgetown looks tough right now
matt (omaha)
Toughest conference: Missouri Valley. They are all good, so they beat each other up. Look at their records against the big boys. Facts are facts.
whayman birmingham al
POY hands down is Kevin Durant. The guy is amazing.
Skeeter (Nashville)
Buzz are you serious? The bottom of the PAC 10 is SO weak. AZ State and Oregon State are a combined 2-24! The best league top to bottom is easily the SEC. The bottom teams in that league (LSU, Auburn, South Carolina) would destroy the bottom teams from the PAC 10. In fact, South Carolina beat Southern Cal this year! Cmon Buzz show some love for the SEC
Buzzmaster (4:13 PM)
Cal, Washington, Stanford vs. LSU, Auburn, S. Carolina? Interesting debate. LSU and SC are a combined 5-17, FYI.
Pat (Boston)
The SEC has one team who has a chance at the final four. The Pac 10 has 4. Skeeter, the SEC is garbage past Florida.
chris claremont, CA
the sec west is joke... no consistency whatsoever, but the top four teams in the west are extremely quality
Ted (AZ)
SEC isnt that great. Georgia almost lost to Kenashaw last night! Who is that???? Kentucky is really overrated too - they cant score. SEC will have 1 team left after the first week of the playoffs
Bob F (Chicago IL)
Way to go Buzz - you tell him. The SEC west is brutal!!!! Does Alabama even have one road win this year?
AC (LA)
Come on Buzz. Cal and Washington? Have you watched them. Even guys that played for Cal think the current team is a dog.
Buzzmaster (4:17 PM)
Easy now. I was just countering what he was saying with the SEC and the bottom teams. I'm not saying any of those teams are any good.
Buzzmaster (4:17 PM)
Or elite teams. We were just talking about conference depth.
Randy Lexington KY
Come on Buzz- Show Kentucky some love
Buzzmaster (4:19 PM)
No thanks. But you can.
Big Tony (Blacksburg, VA)
Hey Buzz, best shot at a Final 4 bid: Virginia Tech, Boston College, or Virginia?
Buzzmaster (4:20 PM)
Right now? I'd say Boston College.
Buzzmaster (4:21 PM)
Fran's here!
Chris, D.C.
What's your take on Duke this year? They've shown moments of brilliance coupled with minuted of ineptitude, yet apart from the Maryland game, seem to be in the game in the last minute or too. Do you see them putting together any sort of run or completely collapsing under tourney pressure?
Fran Fraschilla (4:24 PM)
Anytime you lose two first team all-Americans like Williams and Redick and not be able to replace their scoring and rebounding, you're not going to have the same ballclub. While this Duke team struggles to score, I think it will be a tournament team and still possibly reach the Sweet 16. The effort Josh McRoberts gave at BC is the type of "go-to" effort Coach K needs from him. The bottom line is this - a great recruiting class, led by Kyle Singler, a 6-9 Larry Bird type from Oregon is on the way. But Coach K will push enough right buttons down the stretch of the season will make this a successful reloading year.
Justin (Wheaton)
How is Alando Tucker dropping from some people's POY talk? I know Durant and Dudley and whoever else are good, but who else has carried a team to a top three ranking like Tucker? Scores, rebounds, and a leader. Everything expected of a POY.
Fran Fraschilla (4:26 PM)
Alando Tucker has had a great year and phenomenal year for Bo Ryan at Wisconsin. In most seasons, he would be the clear favorite with Dudley and others not far behind. But Kevin Durant's eye-popping numbers coupled with the way he plays the game, I think have captured the imagination of many college basketball people.
Fran Fraschilla (4:27 PM)
Remember that prior to this season, Alando Tucker wasn't even in anyone's first two rounds of their mock NBA drafts. To me, this is the Josh Howard syndrome all over again. By Feb. 1 of Josh Howard's senior year at Wake, he was clearly the best all-around player in the ACC and he was selected 29th in the NBA draft. Now he's an NBA all-star. Tucker is a wise first round pick in the 15-25 range, in my opinion.
Fran Fraschilla (4:27 PM)
By the way, a deep Wisconsin run in the tournament would solidify the great career he's already had.
Rob(Chicago)
How would you rank the current class of fresman PGs?(Lawson, Conley jr, Augustin, Sherron Collins...etc.)
Fran Fraschilla (4:30 PM)
Rob, you're right, the most impressive thing about them is not their talent, but the way they play the point guard position. Augusin and Mike Conley particularly are tremendous leaders on the basketball court with great vision and passing ability. Ty Lawson and Collins fit into a different category of scoring point guards but both have had flashes of brilliance. None of the four have disappointed, although my current favorite is Augustin. After watching him close up this season, his overall skill package reminds me of Jameer Nelson's of recent St. Joe's fame. I believe he's even a better passer than Nelson was.
Justin (Clemson, SC)
In how much danger is Clemson in falling into the NIT given their conference play?
Fran Fraschilla (4:31 PM)
I think Clemson, despite the tough loss last night at Wake Forest and barring a major collapse in the last three weeks, they'll get an NCAA bid. I still like their team and because of their style of play could actually be a dangerous NCAA opponent for some teams. Their variety of pressure defenses is not something that teams outside the ACC will be used to.
Fran Fraschilla (4:32 PM)
They've got an experienced backcourt and a solid inside presence.
DB (Nashville)
Fran, Florida comes into Memorial Gym in Nashville taking on a Commodore team looking for some revenge from the comeback win in Gainesville. How dangerous is this game for the number #1 team in the land?
Fran Fraschilla (4:34 PM)
DB, I watched that whole Florida-Vandy game, which you correctly pointed out was a tale of two halves. I couldn't believe how well Vandy played in the first half and how quickly Florida turned the tables. Last night's Florida game was eerily the same. I like Vandy's three-point shooting, but it just seems to me that Florida knows just when to turn on the switch. They should be ready for a tough road test. Vandy, like Clemson, Texas, USC and Washington St., is one of those well-coached teams that could present problems if they get into the NCAA tournament.
Fred (Connecticut)
Can anyone believe LSU, UCONN, and maybe Syracuse wont make the tournament? Mid-majors go!
Fran Fraschilla (4:37 PM)
First of all if that all happens that will be great news for Ron Franklin, myself and others, because we will be covering the NIT finals in New York. But I don't think that opens the doors for mid-majors. I believe the committee when they say they'll take the 32 best at-large teams. A number of mid-major leagues who are used to getting multiple bids may be reduced to just a handful this year. The MVC, for example, has a number of quality teams, but for the moment may only get three in. The Mountain West also has a strong possibility of getting three teams in. But what happens in the Colonial, where VCU and Old Dominion are currently vying for conference supremecy? When it's all said and done, I don't think there will be any quota for conferences or mid-majors.
Ballas Sammy (Winston-Salem, NC)
Why are elite teams like Florida and UNC still struggling with focus and intensity this late in the season?
Fran Fraschilla (4:39 PM)
It's a great point, which is why I like to often pick a team in a power conference that has been fighting for its life in the month of February just to get an at-large bid, exactly like the teams I just mentioned - Vandy, Texas, USC. Those teams go into the tournament playing with a great deal of sharpness and intensity because their back is literally against the wall the final month of the season. With that said, Florida and UNC are too talented and too well-coached to not be ready for the tournament. Remember, Florida last year had the long winning streak at the beginning of the season before losing six conference games and then winning the NCAA title.
Fran Fraschilla (4:40 PM)
Hey, I apologize for the abrieviated chat today. Weather issues have scrambled my day up here in Bristol. But I'm excited to be in the studio with College GameNight at 12:30 a.m. ET. See everyone next week.
