Chat with Kevin Kolb

Kolb left Indianapolis pleased with his performance at the Combine. According to the Houston Chronicle, Kolb said he had an incredible interview with the Houstan Texans. Scouts Inc.'s Todd McShay said that Kolb seized his opportunity
with Brady Quinn, JaMarcus Russell and Troy Smith not working out at the Combine.
Kolb rewrote the record books while at Houston. The 6-3, 225-pound QB finished his career with a school-record 12,964 passing yards. He threw for 85 TDs in his Cougar career. In 2006, his senior season, Kolb finished with 3,809 yards passing, 30 TDs to just four INTs, completing 67.6 percent of his passes.
Kolb also holds school records for pass completions (964), pass attempts (1,565), total plays (2,037), total offense (13,715) and touchdowns responsible for (106).
ESPN.com's Mel Kiper Jr. puts Kolb among his top quarterbacks
in the draft, while Scouts Inc.'s Todd McShay ranks Kolb as the fifth best QB
at the NFL Combine.

We're getting Kevin right now!
David Cardinal (Houston, TX)
You made us all pround at UH and I have a great feeling about your NFL future, but what are you going to miss most about your Cougars?
Kevin Kolb (3:06 PM)
I'm going to miss the small family atmosphere. As you know, the Cougar nation is not as large as other universities and I enjoyed that because I got to know everyone on a personal level.
Colin (Austin tx)
Hey Kevin, What do you think the toughest transition form the college game to the pros will be?
Kevin Kolb (3:07 PM)
I think the speed is definitely an issue for any athlete jumping from one level to the other. The other will be learning a new system. It will be a challenge for me for whenever I enter the mini-camps.
Josh (Dexter, NY)
Hey Kevin. Best of luck between now and the draft! How do you feel the interviewing process went at the combine, as I hear this is a crucial component when evaluating a QB?
Kevin Kolb (3:08 PM)
Yes, it's very crucial. I believe that was one of my best areas. I had a lot of feedback from coaches as I saw them later in the day. Being from a small town and strong family, I believe I was taught how to treat people right and I think the coaches value that.
Graham (Kirkland, WA)
So far what has been the most exciting part of the draft process?
Kevin Kolb (3:09 PM)
I think the overall experience of meeting everyone. You get to meet a lot of people you've seen over the years. You realize you've been fans of one another throughout your college years and you get to realize how similar everyone is.
Rob (seaford)
Hi Kevin- Do you have any preference as to what type of offensive system you go to at the next level? Would a West Coast offense fit your skills better?
Kevin Kolb (3:10 PM)
It makes sense to be in that type of system. I would also like to be in a system where I can move around - like a Gary Kubiak system or Denver system. But I feel like I can adjust to any system and learn any system.
Ram (Coog Nation)
Kevin, thanks for 4 years of great football!! I was glad to hear you enjoyed your interview with the Texans. What do you think Gary Kubiak and Rick Smith feel is your strongest asset as a QB?
Kevin Kolb (3:11 PM)
I would think that most teams aren't very concerned with my physical ability or mental ability, it's just the doubt of our system. That's the biggest hurdle I'm dealing with right now. I have to make them believe that I can adapt to any system they put me in.
Christian (High Point, NC)
Kevin, what was your favorite NFL team growing up?
Kevin Kolb (3:12 PM)
It was the Cowboys. I lived just north of Dallas. Naturally with the Super Bowls that they won, they were definitely my favorite team.
Kyle (Santa Rosa, CA)
Where will you be watching the draft?
Kevin Kolb (3:12 PM)
From my ranch house in south Texas with my family.
Mark H. (Bowling Green, OH)
Which QBs in the NFL do you most enjoy watching?
Kevin Kolb (3:13 PM)
My two favorite are Brett Favre and Drew Brees. I enjoy Brett because of his passion for the game. And I enjoy Drew because he battles back against any questions that anyone has about him.
Kevin (Houston)
I'm praying for you to be a Texan. How would you feel if that were to happen?
Kevin Kolb (3:14 PM)
I would be elated. That would be a great situation for me to be thrown into. I feel like God will put me into wherever I can do that best. That's the mindset I'm taking into the situation.
Brian from U. of Houston(Go COOGSSS!!) Texas
How do you feel about your performance at the combine? How was the experience? And last question, how do see the UH football doing next year?
Kevin Kolb (3:14 PM)
I thought that it was really good. I felt I was consistent in every year. I'm looking forward to my pro day to show more skills.
Lane (Kukuihalele, HI)
So Kevin how was your flight home? Are you traveling first class now?
Kevin Kolb (3:15 PM)
No, definitely not first class. I was stuck in the Atlanta airport like everyone else that was trying to leave Sunday. I was stuck over night and found a flight out the next day. But I'm good and rested at home now.
Ryan (Evansville, WI)
Kevin, First I would like to say Congrats on a great career and good luck in the Pros. My question for you is, being a QB and an NFL prospect, How do you feel about Brady Quinn and JaMarcus Russell not participating in the NFL Combine?
Kevin Kolb (3:17 PM)
Well, you can't blame them for their decisions. With their situation, they feel like they can only decrease their stock by participating. Being someone that did participate, you'd like to see everyone stack up against each other, but if I were in their spot, I'd probably do the same thing.
Mike, Irving, Tx.
Kevin, we are really rooting for you and wish you the best of luck coming up in your NFL career. My questiona are, how was the combine experience and what was the srangest question you were asked in your interviews by the teams.
Kevin Kolb (3:18 PM)
Most of mine were straight forward. They just wanted to know your background. The strangest ones to me were on the test, if you were an animal, would you rather be a cat or a dog? That kind of stuff that's all part of them grading your personality.
Burr (NJ)
How do you feel about the Madden Curse? If you had the oppertunity to be on the Cover of Madden, would you do it?
Kevin Kolb (3:19 PM)
I'm not a believer in curses or superstitions, just because biblically, that's not what you're suppposed to believe. I would definitely take the opportunity to be on there, because that would mean you're very successful at the NFL level.
Lane (Kukuihalele, HI)
Did you learn a lot from working out with NFL coaches at the Senior Bowl? Which coach helped you the most?
Kevin Kolb (3:20 PM)
Yeah, I definitely did. Just being around them, you learned the overall urgency of the league. Everyone's jobs are at stake. Secondly, Norv Turner was very influential on me. I like how he handled himself and the players that he was assciated with.
Scott (Boston via NJ)
How much did you prepare for the physical aspects compared to the mental aspects of the Combine?
Kevin Kolb (3:21 PM)
You spend a lot of time. You probably spend about 6-8 hours a day on both. It's your life right now. But you find time to relax and wash it all away.
Atlanta, Ga
How much harder is it for prospects from smaller D-1 schools or even D-1AA to gain recognition at the combine?
Kevin Kolb (3:22 PM)
I believe recognition from the media is harder than it is from the teams. If you're good, they're going to find you. These coaches have known me for four years. They have their eyes out and they have to get the best players in the nation and that's what they're out there to do.
Kevin (Houston)
Who do you feel has the best chance to QB the Coogs next year? Are you gonna try to make it to the Alabama game?
Kevin Kolb (3:23 PM)
I think they have a very good chance of repeating again. They have a lot of young talent and a good recruiting class again. There are a lot of players ready to lead. There are some good players behind me that have a chance to play a lot of years just like I did.
Scott (Boston via NJ)
What sport would you be playing if it wasn't football?
Kevin Kolb (3:23 PM)
Probably basketball. My dad was a basketball coach for a number of years, so I've enjoyed that sport.
Jamaal (Mount Laurel, NJ)
Other than Peyton Manning, who do you think is the best QB in the NFL currently. Thanks and good luck on the league!
Kevin Kolb (3:24 PM)
Again, mine is Drew Brees, because he took an organization on the ropes and turned the team around. It shows how great of a man he is as well as a player.
Ram (HOUSTON, TX)
Kevin, first let me say THANKS for representing the Coogs in such an amazing and classy way!! We're going to miss #4. I was curious as to which team you think has shown the most interest in you at the combine? Also, what do you think about the guys taking over at UH? Can we feel confident at QB going into next season??
Kevin Kolb (3:26 PM)
It's hard to say which team showed interest. The teams don't want to let the players know or the other teams from knowing what's going on.
Kyle (Minneapolis)
What would you think about playing in a conservative offense like up here in Minnesota?
Kevin Kolb (3:26 PM)
It wouldn't bother me at all. I think I can adjust to any situation that's dealt. You have to. That's what's being a professional athlete is all about.
Lane (Kukuihalele, HI)
How many hours a week do you plan on studying game film? How many hours did you spend at Houston studying film?
Kevin Kolb (3:27 PM)
Probably somewhere between 14 and 16 hours per week. I plan on increasing that as I jump to the next level.
Sam , Ennis, TX
How much of an ajustment do you think it will be as far as the speed of the game goes? Also guess you are happy you didnt go to Ok state.
Kevin Kolb (3:28 PM)
Well, I think the only way that you can do it is be in and get reps. I'll be there every chance that I can get to be around the guys. Also, be as mentally prepared as possible.
Michael R Houston, TX
I enjoyed several of the games that you played at during your UH career. The Houston Texans seem to be one of the teams taking a look at you. One of the biggest issues with David Carr seems to be his lack of on-field leadership abilities. How do you think you rate in terms of on-field leadership ability?
Kevin Kolb (3:29 PM)
I think that's one of my strongest points. I like to lead by example, being a coach's son. I think that's how people repsond to you best.
Kevin Kolb (3:30 PM)
Thanks for the questions. I enjoyed having a chance to respond to y'all. Continue to support and I'll continue to do my best.
