Chat with Adam Carriker

Carriker entered the NFL combine regarded as one of the top defensive ends and left the combine with his stock still rising. According to the Sacramento Bee, Carriker's size impressed the field in Indianapolis, with San Francisco particularly taking notice. He ran a 4.84 40 in Indianapolis and put up 33 reps on the bench press.
Carriker, 6-6, 295 pounds, recorded a career-high 52 tackles at Nebraska in 2006, his senior season. He also had seven sacks, upping his total as a Husker to 20.5. With his body type and playing style, many experts forecast that Carriker may be best suited as a 3-4 defensive end or a 4-3 defensive tackle in the NFL.
Scouts Inc. ranks Carriker as the No. 14 player in the draft. ESPN.com's Todd McShay has Carriker going 25th to the New York Jets
, while Mel Kiper, Jr. has Carriker going 21 to the Denver Broncos.

We're getting Adam right now!
Scott (Albany, NY)
Hi Adam...was it tough to prepare for the combine testing? Go Huskers!
Adam Carriker (12:33 PM)
It's not really tough, it's just a matter of doing it over and over. Getting your 40 start down and your technique. It's not easy, but it's not overly ridiculously hard.
John (Davis, CA)
What position do you see as your best fit in the NFL: 3-4 DE or either spot in a 4-3?
Adam Carriker (12:33 PM)
I honestly feel that I can feel either one. I'm familiar playing the 4-3 and 3-4. I feel comfortable with either.
Brandon Kansas City, Mo
You were a qb in high school, now your going pro as a DE. What position do you like best and would you rather play DE or DT in the pros? Go Big Red !!
Adam Carriker (12:34 PM)
Yeah, I was a QB in high school. I like playing a little bit of both - DE and DT. A lot of people look at him with my 3-technique. Either position would be fine with me.
Nathan (Lincoln)
Hey Adam!! We will miss you here at NU, you were a great force! Are you ready for the toughness of the NFL??
Adam Carriker (12:35 PM)
From what people tell me, it's very tough. College football is tough, but it's another level. The collisions are like train wrecks. I'll do whatever I have to do, lift, run - those guys have been doing it for years, so I'll listen to them.
Soren (LA)
Of all of the quaterbacks in the NFL, who would you most like to sack?
Adam Carriker (12:36 PM)
Hmmmm. I would say Brett Favre, because I remember watching him when I was in middle school. Sacking him would be fun. Nothing personal. It would be an honor, honestly.
AR (OKC)
Which team would you like to play for in the NFL? GO SOONERS!!
Adam Carriker (12:37 PM)
Not really. I would say whatever teams wants to draft me first. There really isn't one particular team.
Bob (Philly, PA)
What was the worst/funniest question you were asked the combine?
Adam Carriker (12:38 PM)
The worst question I got asked was by a radio question and it was questions he thought they were asking at the combine. It was if I were a tree what kind of tree would I want to be? I never got asked anything like that at the combine. Nothing close.
Peter (MA)
Do you feel confident about this year's combine?
Adam Carriker (12:38 PM)
I feel like I did very well. Just because of how I am, I look at every drill and think I could have done better here. I did good, but I always feel like I could do better.
Randy Eisenhauer Elgin, NE
Go Huskers!! What was it like to play for callahan and did he get you more prepared for the NFL then any other coach since he was once a head coach for the NFL?
Adam Carriker (12:39 PM)
Definitely. He has that NFL mentality. We ran the practices like they did in NFL. We ran the Senior Bowl practices like our practices and to be honest, those practices were easier than our practices.
SC (Detroit)
Adam, what would you say your strengths are as a DE?
Adam Carriker (12:40 PM)
I would say my combination of speed and strength, which equals power. It allows me to not only be a run stopper or a pass rusher but a combination of the two.
Mike (New Jersey)
What teams have shown interest in you and where do you see yourself playing next season?
Adam Carriker (12:41 PM)
It's really hard to figure that out. There are a lot of mind games being played. Teams that are interested might not show interest so no one else knows that they're not interested.
Scott (StL)
Adam, what is your best memory from your time at Nebraska? We loved seeing you play! Go Big Red!
Adam Carriker (12:42 PM)
I would say I have a few. The Alamo Bowl when we beat Michigan State. The Alamo Bowl when we beat Michigan. Down at Texas A&M when we came back to win at the end to clinch the North title.
Dan (Omaha)
Do you feel you lived up to your potential at Nebraska? Are you capable of being a perennial pro-bowl caliber player?
Adam Carriker (12:43 PM)
I think I lived up to my potential in the scheme that we had. I took on a lot of double teams and it was more of a team attack. I was a little disappointed that I didn't get more sacks, but it was more team oriented this year. And yes, I feel like I can be a perennial Pro Bowl player. Everyone does.
scott beekley (vermillion, sd)
Why did you choose Nebraska our of HS.
Adam Carriker (12:44 PM)
I was originally born in Hastings and I ended up going to Washington when I was 3. But my dad grew up a Huskers fan. I grew up watching Nebraska with my dad. I've always been a fan.
Brendan (New York, NY)
Are you a big Madden player, how will you feel when you get to see yourself in the game?
Adam Carriker (12:45 PM)
I actually have only played Madden once or twice. I'm a big NCAA football fan, but now that I'm going to be in the game, I'm sure I'll switch to Madden.
Travis (Canada)
Adam, more fun in your opinion, college recruitment or NFL combine and scouting?
Adam Carriker (12:46 PM)
College recruitment is more fun, because you're not trying to prove yourself. In the NFL, they choose you. They're not trying to impress you, you have to impress them. But I've enjoyed the whole process. The combine, the senior bowl.
Joel (Des Moines)
How has it been going through this whole process along with Jay?
Adam Carriker (12:47 PM)
Jay was my roommate at the Senior Bowl. It's nice to see a friendly face. It was definitely a good part, a good thing.
Ryan (Va)
Adam, Who's your biggest role model in the NFL?
Adam Carriker (12:47 PM)
I grew up liking Grant Wistrom. He plays like his head is on fire. I also like Kyle Vanderbosch. A couple of Nebraska guys. Big strong guys, physical guys.
Kevin (Virginia)
What do you want to accomplish in your first year as a NFL player?
Adam Carriker (12:48 PM)
It would be great to earn a starting spot. That's definitely a major goal of mine.
TJ: Oklahoma City OK
Hey Adam how do you feel the Huskers will do next year and who do you feel is the best player you played against while at Nebraska?
Adam Carriker (12:49 PM)
I think the offense is going to be real good. They have everyone coming back except for a couple of guys. Defensively, they'll be solid at linebacker. Bowman coming back is going to be huge. They just have to sure up the front four. I think they'll be good next year.
Brad (East Lansing)
Most impressive athlete you have played with or against?
Adam Carriker (12:50 PM)
I would say Willie Amos before he hurt his knee. Before he hurt his knee, he was one of the fastest people I've seen in my life. He's a great athlete. But then he hurt his knee.
RJ (Omaha, NE)
Adam, how stressful is it knowing you did your best at the combine and now waiting for the draft and your name to be called?
Adam Carriker (12:51 PM)
Shoot, the hard part's over. The Senior Bowl and combine. That part's over. I did the best that I could do. I'll be comfortable in wherever I go.
Bernie (Wilkes-Barre, Pa)
Congrats on a good combine. Looking back at you time at Nebraska what would you say was the most important part of the program that maybe helped you get to the NFL.
Adam Carriker (12:52 PM)
I would say having Coach Blake as a coach, because he was with the Cowboys in the mid-90's. And having Coach Callahan and his experience with the NFL - being familiar with what they do.
Travyn (Lincoln, NE)
Can you explain what the Blackshirt tradition has meant to you? Go Big Red!
Adam Carriker (12:53 PM)
It's meant a lot. Growing up, you watch guys like Trev Alberts, Grant Wistrom. The first blackshirt I ever got is in a case, the second one to my wife and the third one to my parents. They mean a lot.
Travis (Montoursville, Pa)
What will you be doing on Draft Day? Any plans before or after?
Adam Carriker (12:54 PM)
I'm going back home to my parents' house in Washington. My middle school coach, my high school coach, neighbors and friends will be there. Not a huge party, but they will be there.
Adam Carriker (12:54 PM)
I appreciate all the support. I'll always be a Husker fan. I can't wait to play for whoever picks me in the draft.
