Chat with Greg Olsen

Olsen, who enters the draft after forgoing his final year of eligibility, and Arizona State's Zach Miller arrived in Indianapolis as neck-and-neck as the top two tight ends in the 2007 draft. However, the Palm Beach Post reports that Olsen was far away the best tight end at the NFL Combine. Olsen ran a 4.45 40, easily topping all the other tight ends.
Olsen led Miami in receptions in 2006 with 38. He had 444 receiving yards and one touchdown. He finished his collegiate career with 85 catches for 1,170 receiving yards and six touchdown catches. At 6-5, 252 pounds Olsen is a good target in the offense.
Scouts Inc. ranks Olsen as the No. 30 player in the draft. ESPN.com's Todd McShay ranked Olsen as the best tight end at the Combine
, while Mel Kiper, Jr. also lists Olsen as the best tight end in the draft.

Greg Olsen (4:30 PM)
Thanks everyone for coming on and doing this, it should be fun!
Matt (The Woodlands Texas)
To me, there was no more animated rivaly than the canes and noles, just How much fun was it being in such a heated rivalry?
Greg Olsen (4:31 PM)
It was a lot of fun. There's probably no better rivalry in the whole country than us and Florida State.
Matt : Two Harbors
Greg, your stock has sky rocketed after your great combine. In your mind do you feel you are worth an early to mid 1st round pick?
Greg Olsen (4:31 PM)
I do. I think my workout has helped a lot, but when teams watch me play, they'll know that I'm not just a workout-oriented guy, that I know how to play the game. When it's all said and done, I think I merit a middle of the 1st round pick.
Chris Florida
Greg how do you see the guys rebounding next year under Shannon?
Greg Olsen (4:32 PM)
I think they'll have a great season. I was over there yesterday watching them work out, and they look great. Coach Shannon's a great coach, and there's no doubt in my mind that they'll have a good year.
Matt : Two Harbors
Greg, what do you feel is your greatest strenght as a tight end?
Greg Olsen (4:33 PM)
I just think I'm versatile. I've played TE, receiver, H-back, I've done the slot. I think just being able to play a lot of different positions can bring a lot to an offense.
Cody (San Antonio, Texas)
How do you see yourself progressing in your career? Do you expect playing time right away, or work your way into an offense?
Greg Olsen (4:34 PM)
My goal is to come in and play as a rookie. I feel I can bring something to an offense. There's definitely something I can bring to an offense. My goal is to come in and contribute in some form or fashion.
Kyle(Brockport, NY)
You think that Miami-'Noles is better than UNC-Duke, and Yankees-Sox
Greg Olsen (4:35 PM)
It's right up there! Some of those rivalries go back a little, but as far as college sports goes, it's right up there. If you look back over the last ten years, we've had some great games between us.
Mark - Miami, Fl
How did the altercation started by FIU affect the team the rest of this year?
Greg Olsen (4:35 PM)
Obviously you had a few suspensions, but I don't think it affected the team too drastically. Once that blew over, everything got back to normal, and we got everyone back, so it wasn't too much of a factor.
TOM (G. B WI.)
GREG WE JUST GOT 14" OF SNOW SO WELCOME TO GREEN BAY HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY WITH BRETT FAVRE?
Greg Olsen (4:36 PM)
I'd love to play with Brett Favre. You can't ask for a better quarterback to play with. He's someone who could really help a young person to get started in the NFL and teach them a lot.
Mike B (Syracuse)
What is your favorite off field activity?
Greg Olsen (4:37 PM)
Probably golf. I enjoy it when I have free time, which isn't a lot.
Justin (Philly)
In your opinion, who are the top 3 tight ends to every play for Miami?
Greg Olsen (4:38 PM)
Bubba Franks, Shockey, and Kellen, all three in a row. They helped revolutionize the game, and I've had to try to follow in their footsteps. Those guys are as good as you can get.
Mack-Caneville
What did you think about the NFL combine experience?
Greg Olsen (4:39 PM)
It was interesting. I've never been a part of anything like that. It's a long week, you have very little downtime--from 5:30 AM to 11:00 PM, you're doing something. You're doing everything you can imagine crammed into four days. It's something that comes with making the transition to the NFL.
john (deltona florida)
what did bryan pata mean to you as a friend and teammate
Greg Olsen (4:40 PM)
He was a great guy. We lived in the same suite freshman year. He was a great kid and had a lot going for him. It was a tough loss. We went through it all together the best we could.
Mike Berlin (Syracuse)
There's a history of your family participating in Jazzercise. Would you ever consider it to help improve your footwork?
Greg Olsen (4:41 PM)
Shut up Mike, or I'll throw you over the balcony again.
brett orlando
whose better looking your girlfriend or zach millers girlfriend?
Greg Olsen (4:41 PM)
My girlfriend, definitely.
John (Broward, Fl.)
Are you mentally ready for the tempo and physical hitting of the NFL?
Greg Olsen (4:43 PM)
Definitely. I've played at a high level against some pretty good opponents. You have to step it up a notch at the next level, but I think I'm ready.
Mike (Charlotte)
Greg, Do you still call NJ home and what do you think about the job Rutgers has done lately, did you ever consider going there?
Greg Olsen (4:44 PM)
I think Rutgers has done remarkably. They've completely turned the program around. I did consider going there and they dd recruit me.
Mitch (Morrisville, NC)
Hey Greg, what's gonna be the bigger hurdle to overcome when going pro: the mental aspect or the physical aspect?
Greg Olsen (4:44 PM)
Probably the mental aspect. The game is a lot more complex. Getting adjusting at the next level will be the biggest challenge.
Chris (Philly)
Hey Greg... How many teams interviewed you at the combine? And what teams showed the most interest? Was Philly one of them?
Greg Olsen (4:45 PM)
I did meet with Philly. I met with 16 teams for 15 minutes each (pretty intense!). It's just about getting to know the teams, and them getting to know you.
brett(jersey)
greg, out the top 3 miami TE's you just listed who would you compare your game to the most?
Greg Olsen (4:46 PM)
Probably Shockey. We're similar as far as how we play and our athletic ability.
Dan Scillieri, NJ
Greg, in high school you were also a tremendous defensive end as well as tight end, but is it true that you weren't even the best defensive end on your own team?
Greg Olsen (4:47 PM)
If you go off the tone ime he had more sacks than me in the state championship game, yeah.
will buffalo, ny
do you feel bad at all about leaving the university of miami early?
Greg Olsen (4:47 PM)
Not really. I learned a lot from them in 3 years and owe them a lot, but it's a personal decision for me. I was ready for the next level, and it was something I had to do.
Zach (Bakersfield, CA)
What kind of drills did you do at Miami to help you improve your hands?
Greg Olsen (4:48 PM)
We would do different ball drills and machine drills. Nothing different--just every day, doing drills that people across the country do.
Sunjay (Ann Arbor, MI)
Hey Greg, good luck with Pro Day and the April NFL Draft! What was it like working out with Drew Stanton in Florida?
Greg Olsen (4:49 PM)
It was great. Drew and I got to know one another really well, and we're living across the hall from one another right now. He's a great kid.
Jill (Indiana)
Greg, I really hope you fall to the Colts in the 1st round, with you and Dallas Clark?whooo... watch out other AFC South teams.Would you love to play with Manning?
Greg Olsen (4:49 PM)
Similar to the question with Brett Favre--absolutely. Playing with a guy like Peyton Manning would be a great opportunity for me.
Steven, Los Angeles, California
Hey Greg, First off... Im a SEMINOLE for life!!! but I fully respect your game. I'd like to know where you have heard you'll land in the draft, and which style of offense do you believe serves you best in the league??
Greg Olsen (4:50 PM)
I guess we'll have a better idea when the combine wraps up this afternoon, but I'd say the mid-1st round. It's hard to tell, you leave that up to everybody else.
Kenton (Indianapolis)
Greg, not to bring up bad memories but do you have any regrets about leaving ND and going to the U?
Greg Olsen (4:51 PM)
None at all. Going to Miami was one of the best decisions I've made. I wouldn't trade it for anything. It's one of the best programs to play for in the country.
Matt : Two Harbors
Greg - throughout your college career which opposing defender rang your bell the hardest?
Greg Olsen (4:52 PM)
I don't know if anyone rang my bell the hardest, but I've gone against some elite defensive players--Ernie Sims, Mario Williams, people like that.
Mike Berlin (Syracuse)
Have you formulated any relationships that may help a friend graduating in May with a degree in marketing from Syracuse University obtain a position in the NFL?
Greg Olsen (4:53 PM)
Nope, I don't think you'll ever get a job, anywhere.
Greg Olsen (4:53 PM)
(I know him, everyone. Not just being a jerk to some random guy. Just to let you know)
Sean, Miami
Greg who do you think has the best chance to succeed you and be the next great Hurricane TE after you?
Greg Olsen (4:54 PM)
We've got some good guys--Epps, Farr, Zelner, Kirchenberg--four guys who have a chance to do good things and be successful in Miami. They're all young.
Mitch (Morrisville, NC)
Is Mike Berlin (Syracuse) like the Turtle of your entourage?
Greg Olsen (4:55 PM)
That's about right. He just hangs around, tries to grub off me, and doesn't do anything himself. He's also getting a little fat.
Daigo (NYC)
Did you grow up a Giants fan or a fan of the Great New York Jets? (or other team) I think you'd look good in green.
Greg Olsen (4:55 PM)
I actually grew up a 49ers fan, kind of random growing up in New Jersey. I do agree that I'd look good in green.
Anthony (NYC)
What's up Greg, after putting on an impressive performance at the combine after pro day at the U, do you plan on giving teams private workouts.
Greg Olsen (4:56 PM)
That's the next step after Pro Day, definitely.
Lane (Kukuihalele, HI)
Are you going to long snap?
Greg Olsen (4:57 PM)
I could, if teams wanted to see me long snap. It depends on the teams. If they want to see me do it, I have no problem with that.
Brendan Monaghan ((Wayne, NJ))
Who's the best quarterback you've ever played with?
Greg Olsen (4:58 PM)
Best quarterback would probably be Brendan Monaghan from Wayne, NJ. Thanks for never returning my phone call!
Greg Olsen (4:59 PM)
Thanks for everyone coming on! It was fun, hopefully we'll do it again!
