We've got Nitro!
Brian (Enfield, CT)
Quick, without thinking, best challenge to vent frustration?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:09 PM)
The joust. It had to be the joust. You're up there and you get to pound some guy with a stick. I did that for every girl I didn't get. Every dream lost, I pounded some guy.
Lane (Kukuihaele, HI)
What was your most memorable moment on the show?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:10 PM)
God, there were so many of them. It's hard to choose. I guess when we did our live tour, we sold out Madison Square Garden. I was standing in the middle of the Garden where so many great events had occurred. It was so surreal. I couldn't believe this was happening.
Kyle (Minneapolis)
What have you done since American Gladiators?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:03 PM)
Tons of stuff. I wrote and directed a movie. Acted in a movie. Sold screen plays. Climbed Mount Rainer. Tons of stuff.
TP (DC)
Does being a Gladiator help you pick up chicks?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:04 PM)
Like Lance Armstong said, it's not about the bike. I say, it's not the Gladiator that gets the chicks, it's the man behind it.
Brian Kweder (Oxford, CT)
What was your favorite event in the Gladiators? Most hated event?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:05 PM)
Hated easily was Human Cannonball. That was the one where we stood at this pedestal at 15 feet. Then they swung down like Tarzan at us and tried to knock us off. I HATED that.
Greg(Los Angeles)
Who was the strongest gladiator? Off camera did the gladiators have their own competition?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:06 PM)
Different Glads had different strengths. We had this guy Titan, who tried to set the world's bench press record at 700-something pounds. But the strength doesn't make you the best athlete, as we all know. It's strength, agility and tenactiy that make you the best in any sport.
Brian (Newburyport,MA)
Do you practice the events when you arent doing shows? Do you guys kind of act like sparring partners for each other...to get ready for certain events? Like if you were going to be jousting at a show, would fellow gladiators help prep you during the week?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:08 PM)
They had this set up for us. We got to practice. In the later years of the show, the strength and conditioning coach for the USC Trojans football team for about four to six weeks to prepare for the show.
TP (DC)
Did you enjoy beating dorky people on the show?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:08 PM)
No. You never get satisfaction from beating a challenger who didn't bring it. The satisfaction comes from when you have a real challenger and you go toe to toe. That's where the real fun was.
Patrick (Louisville)
Did you guys ever have a battle royal featuring only gladiators to find out who was the ultimate gladiator? Please say you did, and it will be shown again.
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:17 PM)
I think we all knew. I think we all knew it was me.
Jordan (Peoria)
Did you just love picking off someone in assault?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:10 PM)
Yeah. That was a blast. Even though that was one of the least skill-intensive events, that was a lot of fun.
Matt (Spokane, WA)
Were the Gladiators tested for performance-enhancing drugs?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:18 PM)
Give a shout out to Matt in Washington I have a house out there. They did test us starting in our third year.
Greg(Los Angeles)
How did you get on the show? Did you have to audition?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:19 PM)
Yeah, I auditioned, but they didn't know what this show was back then. You did agilities and a test on camera in character. During the tryouts, I actually knocked some guy out and thought I was not going to get the job. But they brought me over and said I got the job.
vic (NY)
what did you think when you first heard the idea for the show did you think it was totally crazy? How did they pitch it to you?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:13 PM)
I had no idea what it was. They pitched it as a sports cross over show for athletes who thought they had what it took to be on camera. I had no idea what it was. I don't think they knew they had lightning in a bottle. I had just finished playing football and was hungry for a job.
Michael (Chicago)
When is AG coming back and where can I sign up?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:14 PM)
Yeah, funny enough. MGM, who owns the show now is in talks about bringing it back. The creator of this show Johnny Serraro told me that they're in talks. You just have to keep your eye to the grindstone. There's a real possibility it might come back.
RC (C-bus)
How were the Gladiator names assigned? Pick your own, draw from a hat, what?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:23 PM)
They had for the men, three different characters assigned with their personalities. Nitro's first name was Evander. He was cocky, tough. Terminator was his favorite movie. After the pilot, everyone was asking, what's Evander? That's when I came up with Nitro.
ty (atlanta)
where did you play football? what position?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:23 PM)
I went to San Jose State. I was an outside linebacker. I played a year in Europe and played a little bit for the Rams when they were in Los Angeles.
Steve (yellowstone)
If you could come up with a new event for AG what would it be?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:25 PM)
I would make the Eliminator the whole last show for the championship. Make it huge like no one could ever finish it and do it somewhere like in Time Square. Blow it up big and have all the fans come and watch it.
Lane (Kukuihaele, HI)
Do you still keep in touch with the other Gladiators? Which was your closest friend when you were doing the show?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:18 PM)
Yeah, I talk to everybody. Big Mike - Gemini - is still my closest friend out of all of them. Every once in a while, I give a shout out to Hawk.
Jordan (Peoria)
Why did the hand bike always seem to be the hardest part of the elminator?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:19 PM)
I don't know if it was the hardest part, but it took incredible hand grip strenght. You're holding yourself up in the air suspended, and then you had to peddle the bike. It was a matter of technique as well. If I was a contender, I would rather have done the hand bike than get smashed by a Gladiator hiding behind the door.
Jeremy (Bellevue, WA)
Danny, how did you like the climb of Mt Ranier it is pretty awsome!
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:20 PM)
It was a lot harder than I expected. It was amazing. I'm looking forward to doing Kilamanjaro this summer.
RC (C-bus)
How do you think the Gladiators would do if they were the "Joes" on Spike TV's Pros vs. Joes?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:29 PM)
We're all athletes. I'm sure we would kick butt. But I definitely think I'm a pro and not a joe.
Chase (New York)
How did they chose which gladiator was doing which event?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:22 PM)
You went in to work that day and it was up on the board. You looked at the board and you went and did your job.
Brian (Enfield, CT)
Were there ever any major injuries that you've ever witnessed on the show?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:23 PM)
Geez. Yeah, of course. There were broken ankles. Personally, I had herniated disc in my back. There were tremendous amount of injuires, just like there are in any athletic event.
Alex (Worcester, MA)
Did any of the challengers give you a true challenge or did you know that you could handle them all?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:23 PM)
You have to be a fool that you can beat anyone any time anywhere. You have to be a fool, I think. You have to take everyone as a serious challenge. That's the only way you can be successful.
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:23 PM)
The fear of losing motivates you.
Steve(Arizona)
Were you there when they filmed Family Matters on your show? How was that?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:25 PM)
I don't recall that, but on Ellen's old TV series, the Gladiators came on and I played her boyfriend.
Evan (Beaufort, SC)
I am a Marine stationed in Beaufort. I just want to say you made the American Gladiators what they were and you were deadly with the tennis ball shooter.
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:25 PM)
Thanks man. I respect you and what you're doing for our country.
Darnell (Richmond, VA)
Were there ever any backstage fights/arguements between the Gladiators or between Gladiators and contestants?
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:26 PM)
No, they always kept us seperated, part of it being that it was a game show and we couldn't mix and mingle with them. But there were people we didn't like and I'm sure there were some who didn't like me.
Danny Lee ''Nitro'' Clark (3:27 PM)
ESPN Classic rocks, man! Watch it!
