Eric Karabell (11:01 AM)
Hello all and welcome to another fun-filled fantasy baseball chat session. Let's get right to the questions...
Sid (Portland, Maine)
Good Morning Eric. Out of the following 3 pitchers, who are the best two the rest of the way? Wolf, Bush and Sheilds.
Eric Karabell (11:02 AM)
I have to say James Shields, because of the strikeout potential. I do believe Dave Bush has turned things around, but he's hardly dominant, so he could struggle again soon. I'd take Wolf third. I do trust him, but I have some doubts. More than I have with Bush.
I'm a Met fan and have Delgado on my team, but I am about fed up with him, is it time to insert Loney in his spot? Thanks.
Eric Karabell (11:04 AM)
Certainly you don't drop Delgado, but if you can bench him and you have James Loney as well, there's no question which player is hitting better currently. Loney is for real; this is not some unproven kid who will flame out after a week or two.
Keith (Grand Rapids)
Sosa for Andruw?? Which side do you want for the year?
Eric Karabell (11:07 AM)
I know things look bleak with Andruw Jones, but I couldn't trade him for Sammy Sosa. I just couldn't. I still think Jones will hit for power, and he's capable of a .250 month with good power in any month. Sosa could do this as well, but I'd take Jones.
Harden was just dropped in my league. Should i pick him up?
Eric Karabell (11:08 AM)
If you want a guy who is likely to end up on the DL in a matter of days, go for it. I just don't see him staying healthy long enough to help your team, whether he's starting or closing.
Did I make a mistake dropping Jered Weaver?
Eric Karabell (11:10 AM)
I think Jered Weaver is hurt, and I mean his arm and not strep throat, and that's why he's struggling and has a high WHIP. Could he turn things around? I suppose, but I would cut him for immediate help and forget about 2006.
Is King Felix using all of his pitches, or is he just not that consistent/reliable?
Eric Karabell (11:11 AM)
Felix Hernandez is so frustrating. One of these days, or maybe it's years, he'll figure things out, but I can't predict an ERA below 4.00 for a season, not even any month, until then. He looked way too hittable last night.
Eric, is Chad Billingsley showing a weakness after last night's start, or was it just a bad outing (3 HRs) for a good pitcher?
Eric Karabell (11:13 AM)
Chad Billingsley hasn't shown very much as a starting pitcher at the big league level. He still walks too many hitters. He can't get through five innings because he throws too many pitches. I'm just not a big fan for 2007. Don't even look at his relief work this season, it's irrelevant. This is a totally different role.
Can Alex Gordon be as good (or close) for the rest of the year as he has been the last few weeks? Would you drop Chad Tracy to pick him up? Thanks!
Eric Karabell (11:14 AM)
I'm buying on Gordon's recent hot streak, and yeah, I would consider dumping Tracy to get him. Gordon is stealing bases and we're finally seeing his power. I don't want to overrate this hot streak, but the guy sure seemed legit back in March, maybe he just needed a few months to settle in.
drop bailey for mcgowan? thanks
Eric Karabell (11:16 AM)
Nobody should be surprised Homer Bailey got lit by the Phillies, a heavy left-handed hitting team in a heavy hitting park. I do think McGowan is legit, but I'm not so sure he'll be better than Bailey from here on out. McGowan does have a nice stretch of quality starts, save for one bad outing, but he's not that much safer than a hotshot rookie like Bailey.
I am sitting Bedard against the Yanks tonight since I am more than halfway through my allotted starts for the year. Good move? I am starting Buerle.
Eric Karabell (11:17 AM)
Bedard leads the league in strikeouts. I would never sit him, personally, even against the Yankees. You have to manage starts, of course, but I would remove someone else.
Did Dave Bush really get moved to the pen?
Eric Karabell (11:19 AM)
I keep hearing that the Brewers either said this or alluded to it somewhere, but I have no actually seen it. I would be plenty surprised if Bush got moved out over Claudio Vargas. There's no doubt Yovani Gallardo is good, but the Brewers have a big division lead and shouldn't panic. If I were managing, I'd move Vargas out. I do understand if Gallardo is moved out. I can't believe it would be Bush.
You ranked Lowell as a Top 5 3B. Do you still believe? How about Braun where do you rank him?
Eric Karabell (11:20 AM)
Ryan Braun is legit, better than I thought he'd be. Who knew he'd run this much? He's like a David Wright type already. I'd rather have Braun the rest of the year than Lowell, but that hardly means I think Lowell is done.
Is Jeremy Guthrie a must-start from here on out? Or do you see him sliding a bit the second time around the league?
Eric Karabell (11:21 AM)
I'm buying. Every outing is a quality start. There's no exact time someone says, "OK, now I believe," but you just feel it. Well, I now think Guthrie is legit. I would be wary for teams to catch up to him, but there's no indication of it yet. Maybe he's just a late-bloomer.
I know closers blow a game and we sit here and we ask who will take his spot, but come on. EMBREE? Might Casilla get a shot one of these days?
Eric Karabell (11:23 AM)
It's possible, but I'd think the A's will stick with Embree a bit longer. It's only one blown save, and he has pitched well overall in June. Casilla remains unproven, although he has nice stats. It's only been a few weeks. I'd own Casilla as a Rafael Soriano type, a nice middle reliever who could get saves if things work out.
Damon claims the chiropractor worked wonders. Was the homerun last night just a tease before another injury filled month or is he back?
Eric Karabell (11:27 AM)
I've stuck with Damon for months, waiting for him to get going, I'll certainly wait longer. It might be a tease, but remember he's a nice power/speed option. Damon's too good to give up on.
Kevin (Portland, OR)
Is James Loney this year's version of Adrian Gonzalez? You know, a young 1B that everybody says is a contact hitter and has no power but is actually one of the best power hitters in the game...
Eric Karabell (11:28 AM)
I don't know about one of the best power hitters, but he does have power, and could hit 20 more homers. So it is possible.
When can I expect Brett Myers back from the DL?
Eric Karabell (11:30 AM)
He is throwing, but is also feeling soreness in the shoulder still. Don't expect him back before the break. I think he'd go right back to closing when he returns.
Aaron - not Hank (Toronto)
If I could get J Reyes for Ordonez good move right?
Eric Karabell (11:32 AM)
Some might scoff at this question, but the way Magglio is playing, it's legit. I would prefer to own Reyes, but if I had plenty of stolen bases and a reasonable SS replacement, would I think about getting Maggio for him? You'd have to. I don't think this Magglio season is going to stop.
Markakis or Braun? This is my only bench spot and Markakis's flexibility is nice(LF/CF/RF eligible).
Eric Karabell (11:33 AM)
I'd rather have Braun. He's got more power, and more speed.
Kelly Johnson in platoon now? Why? How on earth does he hit a little slump and now in danger of losing time to the underwhelming Yunel Escobar who went 0-3 last night in his place?
Eric Karabell (11:36 AM)
It's possible Johnson is just sitting more against left-handed pitching, since he's struggling. Washington threw lefty Mike Bacsik last night. Johnson is 0-for-13 over the last week, and he's hitting .210 at home. If he was platooned it wouldn't shock me, or be a bad move.
Did Hardy fix the hole in his swing or is the another reason for his resurgence?
Eric Karabell (11:38 AM)
I think Hardy was a bit banged up, and also he needed to adjust to the different way he was being pitched. I don't expect another 18 home runs from here on out, but a 30-90 season, sure. He's hit in nine straight games, and has seven walks against three K's in that span. He's a solid player.
Does Qualls get the next sav opp. for Houston?
Eric Karabell (11:39 AM)
He probably should, but I still think it will be Dan Wheeler. It's starting to not matter what Houston does. That team is a mess. I actually think when Brad Lidge returns he'll be dealt.
Who do I trade....Howard or Fielder
Eric Karabell (11:41 AM)
I think they are so similar, I would see which one gets you more in a trade. Really, they are each hitting homers and for average, and I think Prince ends up with similar stats to what Howard did last year.
Whats wrong with Hafner? Should I trade him now while he still has some value? Or is it too late for that and I am better off holding onto him and hoping he turns it around based on past numbers?
Eric Karabell (11:42 AM)
I think Hafner is one of the better buy-low options out there. I would not trade him, unless the offer is similar to what it would have been back in March. This is a top power hitter.
Kevin (Princeton NJ)
With Salty's 2 HR performance last night while starting at 1B does this mean that the Braves will finally wise up and keep his bat in the lineup on a regular basis? How ownable do you see him being in a 12-man mixed H2H?
Eric Karabell (11:43 AM)
I would own Saltalamacchia as a catcher, but I still haven't seen indication that Bobby Cox will play him at first base over Scott Thorman. Until then, Salty is just a reserve catcher who gets time against lefties.
Looking remainder of the season -- better SP option in your opinion: Sean Marshall or Dustin McGowan?
Eric Karabell (11:44 AM)
I'd say McGowan. I have nothing against him, and think he'll have fine stats, but any pitcher coming off a one-hitter has higher value than he should.
Jose (San Diego)
What to do with Todd Jones, he keeps killing my team with his 40.00 ERA nights!
Eric Karabell (11:46 AM)
He's still the closer. Unless Jim Leyland turns to Chad Durbin, which would shock me, Jones is going to keep getting saves. He'll blow a few of them, but he could still top 35 or 40 for the season.
with buehrle not being traded does his value drop? I picked him up (dropping Fausto) in hopes he would get traded to another better team, hold out on buehrle?
Eric Karabell (11:47 AM)
Don't believe everything you read. One day he's being traded, the next day there's a contract extension on the table. It always changes. Buehrle has fine numbers now in Chicago. Move him to the NL and he gets a bit better, but he's ownable now as well.
Bart Hamner (Sherman, TX)
I've got a crush on another person in my league.....is there a way...via fantasy baseball to touch his heart? Maybe give up Alex Rios for Placido Palonco to demonstrate my love? Is that unethical?
Eric Karabell (11:48 AM)
Now that is funny. If proving your love is more important than winning, make the deal. Is it unethical to make a trade that favors someone else? Well, maybe you could try to make it more even.
Is Marlon Byrd for real???
Eric Karabell (11:49 AM)
Yeah, he kinda looks like he is. I don't think he'll hit above .300 for the season, but in a Mark DeRosa kinda way, he's enjoying hitting at Texas and playing over his head. Use him properly.
Hey Eric, thanks for the chat! Do you see a problem having both Lee and Pence as 2 of my 3 outfielders? Or should I look to make a move?
Eric Karabell (11:51 AM)
No, I see no problem with it. Both these Astros outfielders are playing well, and I don't see too many cold streaks on the horizon. I think twice about taking half a team's lineup in a h2h league, but not in roto ones. And this is only two players.
Why can't Richie Sexson hit before June? Can we expect another second half like he had last year? Where doest that rank him among 1b the rest of the way
Eric Karabell (11:52 AM)
Actually, Sexson helps fantasy owners by letting his know he won't hit a lick until now. You can plan ahead. I wouldn't call Sexson a top-10 first baseman, but he's a guy you target for power.
Since I value your opinion above all the other Espn experts, Could you pelase give me a hand here? Better replacement for Miggy Tejada? Tulowitzki or Harris from the drays?
Eric Karabell (11:54 AM)
I'd probably go with Harris over Tulowitzki. I think the power and average for Harris is more legit. Tulowitzki just started hitting for pop, and he's doing all his damage at Coors and against lefties. Harris is more balanced. By the way, I have doubts Tejada returns at all this season. It's August at the earliest.
Phil (New York)
Your answer the the Marshall vs. Mcogwan question confused me. You said Mcgowan, but then implied he was overrated. Which pitcher do you take?
Eric Karabell (11:55 AM)
Yes. I do pick McGowan, but do think he's overrated coming off the one-hitter. I think McGowan could win double digits with an ERA of around 4.00. He might be worth more than that until he starts again.
Tony (Los Angeles)
Is Kyle Kendrick any good? Was he ever considered to be a "top prospect"? Is he worth adding in deeper, NL only leagues?
Eric Karabell (11:56 AM)
He's not really a top prospect at all, and Philly plucked him from Double-A, because they were so desperate. In deep leagues I'd consider adding him for the wins potential.
Ian (potomac, md)
Thome or The Big Hurt the rest of the way? Harden or Lidge or Myers the rest of the way? Thanks.
Eric Karabell (11:57 AM)
I'll take Thome, though you should look at what Frank Thomas did after the break last year. I expect both these DHs to hit. And Lidge, Myers then Harden. I don't think Harden will pitch much.
Is it time to give up on Rafael Furcal?
Eric Karabell (11:58 AM)
No. It's a shame, since he's clearly hurting, but we're all stuck with him. Hopefully he'll get healthy soon and have a big second half.
Eric Karabell (11:58 AM)
OK, thanks to everyone for the fine questions. Enjoy your Wednesday and look for another fantasy chat later today. Adios!
