Stay tuned to chat with Amy Nelson, live from baseball's winter meetings!
Amy Nelson (10:01 AM)
Hi everyone I'm here live in Nashville at the winter meetings ....
Amy Nelson (10:02 AM)
Please send in any of your comments or questions
Chris (San Fran, CA)
Hey Amy - What can we O's fans reasonably expect to get back for Eric Bedard? I hear that we're asking a Santana-like price for him. Are Angelos and MacPhail serious? Or is this another smokescreen?
RJ (Jax, FL)
You have gotta love the Willis and Cabrera trade for the Tigers. The Marlins would be lucky if two of their newly aquired prospects could pan out to be half of the young talent they traded away. But who really knows? This strategy has won them 2 World Series.
Amy Nelson (10:12 AM)
I don't think it will be a Santana like price ... but they certainly want a lot.
KC (LI,NY)
Will the Mets do anything in the coming weeks to improve the ball club?
Amy Nelson (10:13 AM)
KC,Omar Minaya certainly seemed to indicated they the Mets weren't going to be doing too much. I'm sure that's disheartening to Mets fans
John (NY)
Amy, Do you think the A's are going to come down with their demands for Haren? Are they really going to get a Santana type package for him?
Amy Nelson (10:13 AM)
John,They are asking a lot, and remember, Billy Beane doesn't HAVE to trade him. So he wants a big return for sure
Matt (New York, NY)
Is it just me or is the National League now basically just an extension of the Minor Leagues?
Amy Nelson (10:13 AM)
Matt,Yep, triple-A.
David (Ray, MI)
I think right now the Tigers are the odds on favorite to win the world series. There's nobody you can pitch around. I think Sheffield and Rogers will stay healthy and I think Zumaya has learned his lesson about getting injured . World Series prediction Tigers over Dodgers 4-2.
Travis ( Jamestown ND)
This Santana trade deal is like a dang soap opera. You can miss a couple days, come back and see that nothing has changed and you know exactly what has happened.
RAY GORDON REID ( JACKSONVILLE FLORIDA 32277)
COMMENT RAY TO AMY BOSTON RED SOX 2008 WORLD SERIES CHAMPS
Justin (Boston)
Amy, what is the atmosphere like at the meetings? Can you print 100 copies of my resume and beg someone there to hire me?
Amy Nelson (10:15 AM)
Justin,You'd have tough competition, I've seen so many job seekers here. Mood was one of excitement last night when news of trade went down, the rest is just a bunch of complaining about how big the Opryland is
Tom (Seattle)
Up here we keep hearing we are right in there on Bedard. Any insight, Amy?
Amy Nelson (10:15 AM)
Tom,Havent checkedin yet this morning, but that's the word. I still think the Dodgers will get him. As one baseball source told me yesterday, they "want him bad."
Brittany (Indiana)
Will the Orioles at least do their fans one small decency and not trade Bedard away to a division opponent?
Matt (New York, NY)
Amy, does the Tiger trade affect the Santana dealings at all? If the Twins had any intention of holding on to Santana and taking a shot, it must be almost gone based on how stacked the Indians and Tigers are now.
Amy Nelson (10:24 AM)
good question ... how depressing is it to be another team in that division now? I stil think they will try and trade Santana, though obviously it's not done.
Brent (Georiga)
Did the Braves make a good move by getting Glavine back?
Amy Nelson (10:24 AM)
Brent,Why not?
Simon (Springfield, MO)
Looks like the Halos missed out on M-cab. Are the Angels in deep trouble? Are there any attainable big bats out there that can protect Vladdy?
Amy Nelson (10:25 AM)
Simon,Deep trouble? They just got Torii Hunter
Amy Nelson (10:26 AM)
By the way, ran into a baseball source this morning who told me the Giants and Blue Jays were talking Alex Rios for Tim Lincecum yesterady .. .but i dont think anything progressed in those talks,
Mike (Dodger Fan)
Amy, if the Dodgers get Bedard, who are you hearing they would have to part with? Kemp, Broxton and ??? This really frightens me as a Dodger fan!
Amy Nelson (10:26 AM)
Mike,That's exactly what I heard from a baseball source yesterday.
Mike; Boston
With all the hype on Dontrelle Willis, does his ERA of 5.17 get over looked. That is a high ERA for being in the national league.
Amy Nelson (10:27 AM)
Mike,It is, and that's the number one mystery people can't seem to solve...
Andrew (Bethesda, MD)
The Orioles must be out of their minds in thinking of trading Erik Bedard. He is one of the few bright spots on the team and if they trade him, there will be no reason for anyone to head to Camden Yards this season. He and Nick Markakis should be the center pieces that the Orioles build around!
Brian (Bloomington, Indiana)
The cubs usually do a little wheelin' and dealin' around this time, has Jim Hendry and associates done another of interest? PLEASE say they are interested in getting arid of Prior and picking up another quality bat!!
Amy Nelson (10:29 AM)
brian,a team source told me they're definitely listening to offers and that he thinks Prior will move.
Jason (Baton Rouge, LA)
Amy, any chance the Pirates make a move before the day is through? I'm sure Bay has to be drawing some interest.
Amy Nelson (10:31 AM)
Jason,Seems unlikely, though I haven't checked in on them. I'm not sure if they're going to move Bay. I know they've been trying...
TJ (Secaucus, NJ)
As a huge Yankee fan I hate to say this but if the red sox get santana they will break the yankees record of winning 5 series in a row. With the best 2 pitchers in baseball and the best 3-4 combination in baseball how do you lose!!!
Amy Nelson (10:32 AM)
TJ,The Tigers may have something to say about that ...
Nathanael (KC)
Speaking of the Cubs, will they get Fukodome?
Amy Nelson (10:32 AM)
The Cubs are making a push.
Justin S. (Jacksonville, FL)
How much do you think the Mitchel Investigation will affect next season. What do you think the repercussions would be if it was discovered that big name players used steroids, possibly more than one?
Amy Nelson (10:34 AM)
Justin,Not sure exactly, but it all depends on whether these players are going to be suspended. Again, the Mitchell report may be based in speculation, and unless you are a player caught in a federal investigation, MLB could have little recourse.
Rob (Cleveland)
I don't understand the hype behind the Tigers team right now. Adding Dontrelle is not adding a Cy Young winner. They're starters are average behind Verlander and the bullpen is still a mess. Pitching wins, so the red Sox are still the best in the league
Corey (Ohio)
Amy, do you think the Indians will make any deals at these meetings?
Amy Nelson (10:34 AM)
Corey,Word out of their camp is not much word at all. They've been pretty quiet and Mark Shapiro admitted as much. Doesn't mean they won't do something, but at these meetings there usually seems to be little action and all talk.
Brian (Bloomington, Indiana)
One more Cubs question, is there anymore talks of Mark Cuban purchasing the Cubs, or will it be another no name billionaire that just wants to reap its profits?
Amy Nelson (10:35 AM)
Cuban came out the other day and said he's still interested.
Trevor (MI)
Amy, any chance the tigers can get their hands on Barry Bonds and have him and sheffield rotate as DH? considering both of them are older.
Amy Nelson (10:38 AM)
Trevor,Leyland said there's no interest there.
justin (az)
Amy, are the d-backs actually trying to make a move for bedard or haren or is it just more junk the ownership is trying to feed us to make us think they aren't as cheap as we all think?
Amy Nelson (10:40 AM)
Justin,The D-Backs always explore options and trades, and they've had haren and blanton on their radar since last year. But JOsh Byrnes also is willing to stand pat if the trade isn't right. He did so last year and his team made it all the way to the NLCS this year.
Mark (Dallas)
Amy, will the Cowboys beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl?
Amy Nelson (10:40 AM)
Mark,This is mostly a baseball chat today since I'm here in Nashville, but no I don't think so. But I'm more of a baseball expert ..
G (Detroit)
Inge and Robertson for Santana = World Series
Amy Nelson (10:41 AM)
G,That's a joke right?
Amy Nelson (10:42 AM)
Peter Gammons is here with me and he's hearing that Santana may not be traded now ...
Amy Nelson (10:43 AM)
And instead of Lincecum for Rios, it's now Matt Cain...Peter says.
Sam (Raleigh, NC)
Depressing to be in the AL Central division?? Try being an O's, Jays and Rays fan that have to compete with the only two teams at or nearing the 200 million dollar payroll every year.
Jay (Chicago)
Kenny Williams of the ChiSox said they would make a big splash in free agency this year. So far they missed T. Hunter and now M. Cabrera. So who is going to be there "big" move?? A. Jones and his .220 avg.??
Amy Nelson (10:44 AM)
Jay,Williams isn't a big Boras fan so not sure if Jones will land there.
Joe (Old Bridge, NJ)
What are the Yaankees thinking? Please tell me...
Amy Nelson (10:44 AM)
Joe,Does anyone ever really know?
Glenn (New Jersey)
Intresting, Cain would make more sense for the Jays, if Burnett can get his stuff together this would give them a chance to pass the yankees if any of their 3 youngsters falter.
Amy Nelson (10:45 AM)
Glenn,I think if Toronto got Cain, they'd move Burnett. He wants out of there big time and I think they'd be happy to oblige.
Darren (Ann Arbor)
Why do players like Andruw Jones, who have had great careers with one down year, have a hard time getting a contract? Why do players like Gary Matthews Jr., who have had mediocre careers and one good year, cash in with huge deals?
Amy Nelson (10:45 AM)
Darren,Andruw Jones hasn't had a multi-year offer yet, so we'll see what he eventually gets.
Terence, Long Island
GOOD. they should keep santana, they are getting a new park. give the people there what they paid for...
Ryan (Des Moines, IA)
Amy, I heard some teams might are looking at Joe Nathan? Have you heard anything about this? What teams? If any?
Amy Nelson (10:46 AM)
Joe Nathan was here on Monday and his name was an early on eout there in the rumor mill. I can say I havent heard his name much at all, though I havent asked.
Rob (Warwick,RI)
The Mets should trade Milledge, a young infielder, and pelfrey/humber, to the twins for santana. Milledge could replace torii hunter in center field. It is obvious that Willie Randoplh has a personal grudge against Lastings Milledge.
Amy Nelson (10:48 AM)
Hey Rob,Ummmmm, think you havent' been reading the papers. Milledge was already traded. Last week. To the Nationals. Sorry to break the bad news to you.
John (Nashville, TN)
Welcome to Nashville! Why hasn't the rest of MLB figured it out? It doesn't take a $200 million payroll to win games. Look at Colorado. They didn't have to have ten players making more money in a year than some small countrys' GNP to make it to the World Series...
Amy Nelson (10:49 AM)
John,Yes, but they lost the World Series to a team that has that near $200M payroll
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Amy as a Braves fan, is there any reason I should really follow the winter meetings?
Amy Nelson (10:54 AM)
Johnny,Not sure but I heard a great story this morning ... Brandon Jones the left fielder, a scout went to see him and his mother and stepmother were running some sort os snack shack, and one was dipping and the other was chewing tobacco.
Adam (Lexington, KY)
Have heard some things about Cincinnati being in on the Bedard talks, any insight on that?
Amy Nelson (10:54 AM)
Adam,Yes but I don't think they're willing to part with Bruce.
Alex (Boston)
Can you tell Peter Gammons that he is the man. Thanks
Mike (Dodger fan)
Despite Ned Colletti saying all hope looks lost are the Dodgers still the favorites for A. Jones?
Amir (Atlanta)
Did Bonds get any serious offers yet?
Amy Nelson (10:58 AM)
Amir,No, none at all. In fact, the A's might not be interested at all any more.
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
I think Bonds may be playing in the California Penal League next year.
Ryan (Des Moines, IA)
Tell Alex from Boston that his boys are the new Yankees but worse b/c they think they're not
Robert ( minneapolis, minnesota)
Amy and Peter, There is a god!!! Why trade santana unless you get the farm for him?
Justin (Indy)
Any chance the Padres get Fukodome? If not, what do you see them doing to address their outfield?
Amy Nelson (11:04 AM)
Justin,Not sure haven;t asked about status of that lately, but it was reported today that Milton bradley has lost 15 pounds already and that Kevin Towers still has Bradley on his radar. The centerfield market needs to develop eventually in order for some of these pieces to come together
Sean (Philly)
Any talk on the Phils and a Center fielder?
Amy Nelson (11:08 AM)
Sean,Jerry Crasnick jsut told me they'd still like to sign Rowand, but that they dont want to go three years. Also, Victorino can play center, so they can always go out and try and get a rightfielder. A la Geoff Jenkins ... i guess the Phils have shown some itnerest there.
Mike (Elmira, NY)
Amy, any word on Bedard to the Mets for Gomez, Heilman, and Pelphrey/Humber?
Amy Nelson (11:27 AM)
Mike,Don't think there's any chance of that happening ...
Matt(Toronto)
As a Jays fan, I would love to see Matt Cain in Toronto.... Is the Rios deal a real possibility ?
Amy Nelson (11:28 AM)
Matt,DOn't think SF will part with Cain.
George (ME)
I believe the Red Sox successfully bluffed the Twins/Yanks out of a Santana deal. With that seemingly done what players are the Sox targetting to bolster the bullpen?
Mike (Dodger Fan)
Despite Ned Colletti saying all hope looks lost are the Dodgers still the favorites for A. Jones?
Ryan (Appleton Wi)
Amy, Are the Brewers in any talks at all? Have not heard much of them during the offseason do they even plan on making any moves?
Amy Nelson (11:30 AM)
Ryan,Seems as thought a lot of talks, nothing solid yet. LA Times reported that the Dodgers have talked to the Brewers about Bill Hall, after they lost out on Cabrera.
Amy Nelson (11:31 AM)
Just an FYI guys, we're also be talking about the topic, should steroids be legal? And should the Marlins move out of Florida
Bob (Baltimore)
I know there has been a lot of talk about the O's dealing Erik Bedard but have you heard any talks concerning Tejada?
Amy Nelson (11:32 AM)
Bob,Yes, Tejada is as out there as any player. DOn't think the Orioles are finding a fit. I know they couldn't match up with the Dodgers for him.
Evan (Seattle)
There was a bar in Seattle that was selling beers for the same price as Sexson's batting average last year. Most of the year we enjoyed sub $2.00 beers. Any chance that is happening in another city next year?
Amy Nelson (11:33 AM)
Evan,Not yet. They'd love to move him though.
Amy Nelson (11:34 AM)
Are there any Marlins fans out there?
Glenn (New Jersey)
Anyone who says yes to steroids being legal needs to google or Wiki "WWE Deaths within the past 5 years" It's very sobering.
Baker (Indians Fans) (Arkansas)
NO that is the point they have no fans move them out of Florida!
dave (nj)
steriods should not be legal
Tim (Detroit)
Amy, with third base now taken by Cabrera for the Tigers... does Inge become some sort of a super-sub or do they try to package him for some help in the bullpen?
Amy Nelson (11:37 AM)
Tim,Heard Inge was trying to be pakaged but they cna't get people to bite. I think a very real possibility he will be moved.
Joe (Va)
Steroids are legal with a docters prescribtion, however many people are misusing and abusing them. Just like other prescribtion drugs; oxycotin, vicoden, etc.
Jason Moreno Valley Ca.
Staying on the Tejada topic, do you think the Angels have what it takes to trade for perhaps a Bedard , Tejada combination without getting rid of Jered Weaver or Howie Kendrick?
Amy Nelson (11:37 AM)
jason,NO.
Jasie M. KISSIMMEE,FL
DO YOU THINK THE METS ARE ABOUT TO MAKE A MOVE ANYTIME SOON?
Amy Nelson (11:37 AM)
jasie,NO.
Liz (Big Apple)
Better pitcher Haren or Bedard?
Amy Nelson (11:39 AM)
Liz,Scouts spllit on this, I would take Bedard.
Beau, Richmond, VA
Amy, if I'm being honest, I almost don't know if Santana is worth the troube if you're Theo Epstien. Your team just won the World Series and has an impecable combination of young talent and veteran leadership. What would giving up players like Lester and Ellsbury do for team synergy? Why mess with a good thing?
Glenn (New Jersey)
As for the Fish, why should they have ANY major league teams in Florida when the fans have gotten their MLB fix for so long with most of Spring Training being there?
Amy Nelson (11:40 AM)
Again, any Marlins fans out there?
Pat(Rochester, NY)
The City of Miami should let the Marlins twist in the wind. Its impossible to build up a fanbase for a team when you turn the roster over every 5 years. Fans are putting their heads down, and then looking up and not recognizing anyone. How can you you follow a team if you can't identify, or expect do identify with anyone on the roster?
Ben (Brooklyn, NY)
Look at the numbers, Liz. It's Bedard.
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
I think MLB needs to step in regarding the practices of Marlins' ownership. It is evident that they either don't know how to run a team or choose not to run it properly.
Ryan (Des Moines,IA)
just read Inge is on the way out.
Amy Nelson (11:41 AM)
Ryan,They're trying to send him ...
Amy Nelson (11:42 AM)
move him...
Jason Waterford MI
Do you think the Tigers are the front runner to win a championship?
Amy Nelson (11:50 AM)
That certainly is the hot consensus right now
Will Morin, Myrtle Beach, SC
The problem with the Orioles and the Marlins can be solved by trading two people... Peter Angelos and Jeffrey Loria, respectively.
Amy Nelson (11:51 AM)
Nice, Will.
Amy Nelson (11:51 AM)
Sorry to be wrapping this up soon guys ... I'll try to get to a last few.
Amy Nelson (11:52 AM)
Hey guys, sorry about not talking college football but next week we'll be back to footballand all the other sports. And more about Skip too I'm sure...
john (chicago)
any chance Colorado gets Lowrie away from Boston for Fuentes?
Amy Nelson (11:53 AM)
John,DOn't think so ... O'Dowd said he doesn't want to trade Fuentes. Fuentes' agents can't say the same...
Jason Waterford MI
With the talent the tigers gave to the marlins, they have a great foundation for the years to come. Cameron Maybin is a star in the making and Andrew Miller reminds me of Randy Johnson.
Amy Nelson (11:56 AM)
Gyus, thanks for chatting today sorry I couldm't get to all of your questions. Hopefully we'l have some more news as the day progresses.
