Keith Lipscomb (3:00 PM)
What's up everyone? Let's get this show on the road.
Scooby Doo (Haunted Place)
Hey Keith, I'm torn with what to do with Bynum in a H2H. I'd like to keep him, but there are guys like Horford and Sean Williams that I could get and I've been streaming in order to win some weeks so it'll be harder with one less spot.
Keith Lipscomb (3:03 PM)
I also own Bynum in a head-to-head league and face a similar situation. I'm not lucky enough to have guys like Horford or even Williams available, though, so I may have to stick with him for now...You, on the other hand, if you're already scuffling to remain a playoff contender, are likely forced to waive Bynum. Horford's the better option, so I'd do that now. There's no guarantee Bynum will come back from injury and play like he did before he went down anyway.
Nck (Boston, MA)
Hi Keith! Gridiron ?'s: 1)Favre or Maroney (w/Moss and Gaffney?) 2)Keep both w/ Gaffney & Stallworth? 3)Volek, Faulk, Moss &(Jennings/Welker?) Thanks for your time!
Keith Lipscomb (3:05 PM)
I always favor positions which are more predictable. In this case, QB and RB, so No. 3 is out the door. And I would go with your second option, since I feel it will be GB and NE in the Bowl. Favre and Maroney should put up solid numbers, while you never know for sure what any receiver will do, since they are dependent on other factors more so than QBs or RBs (see: Moss in divisional round).
Strugglish Commish
Keith, can you advise any websites where I can find suggested rules for more complex keeper leagues? Looking for something more than your typical "keep x number of players" type league. Thanks in advance...
Keith Lipscomb (3:07 PM)
I can't say I've got any websites in mind, but if you're looking to be a bit more creative, you could always do something like allowing players to be kept for a specific period of time in the round which they were drafted, for one. Or another possibility would be to do contracts for your players, putting a cap on the number of 2-year or 3-year deals each team can offer up. Something along those lines. Hope that gets your mind going with other possibilities!
Lane (Kukuihaele, HI)
Keith, I need a bump in my FGA% and some rebounds. Who do you think will have the most value in this area from here on out: McDyess, Brand, Varejao, D Lee.
Keith Lipscomb (3:09 PM)
This might not be the popular answer, but I think I'd go with David Lee, because he's actually shooting much poorer than his career numbers, so he's got a chance to be better from here on out. And while it's been frustrating to own him in fantasy so far this season, Lee always seems to find his way onto the court eventually because of the intangibles. McDyess and Varejao are what-you-see-is-what-you-get guys, and Brand is too much of a gamble and is too far away from returning.
Brian(New Haven,Indiana)
Keith, this football season I thought I had a perfect team, but the lack of production from Larry Johnson and Shaun Alexander I lost in the 1st round of the playoffs. Are those guys no longer worthy of the #1RB on fantasy rosters?
Keith Lipscomb (3:11 PM)
Alexander is certainly not worthy of No. 1 RB billing. But I think Johnson still is. He had a tough year health-wise and that offensive line wasn't as great as in past years. But if they draft someone like Jake Long with their first pick this year, that could change in a hurry.
Mike (San Jose, CA)
Keeper question...know Hanley and Crawford. Need one from Kazmir, Lincecum, or BJ Upton (OF only)? Thanks!
Keith Lipscomb (3:15 PM)
I always lean toward hitting, especially when you're only keeping 3 guys. Upton's 23 years old and just went 20-20 and batted .300. Those guys aren't a dime a dozen and it's easier to predict how he'll fare this season across categories than it is for either Kazmir or Lincecum. If you're a little leery of keeping three hitters, you can't go wrong with either of the young stud pitchers, but be aware wins will be hard to come by for Lincecum on a poor Giants squad. That could be the tie-breaker, even though the Rays don't exactly have a winning history.
Katie (Greenwich CT)
Hello Keith! Taking into consideration the weather...which kicker do you think would be used more and effective...Crosby or Gostkowski? Have a nice day!!
Keith Lipscomb (3:17 PM)
Well, Crosby dealt with the elements in college at Colorado, so I'm not terribly worried about him struggling in the cold. It's really a guessing game as far as which kicks more field goals, but I'll go with Crosby, since it's been hard for teams to hold the Pats to field goals all along.
Dan (DC)
Keith, need help on my final keepers. Choose 2: Granderson, Abreu, Philips, or Harang. I'm already keeping Santana, Braun, Rollins, and Sizemore. Thanks.
Keith Lipscomb (3:21 PM)
That's quite a squad, Dan. I'll go with Phillips, because you'll be solid up the middle already entering the draft. I do like Harang a lot, because he's so reliable, productive and eats up innings, too. But give me Phillips.
Keith Lipscomb (3:21 PM)
A-ha...just re-read it...you want two guys, so Phillips and Harang work for me. Cincy boys.
Ed (J'ville)
Keith, will Jose Calderon keep on producing solid assist and three point %? He's been a great late round pick for me.
Keith Lipscomb (3:24 PM)
In the immediate future, yes he will. He's always been a decent shooter and doesn't take many bad shots and is among the best distributors in the game, especially on a per-minute basis. T.J. Ford is the wild card. I expect the team to be cautious with him, so it's hard to say when he returns. And with Sam Mitchell, you never know for sure what he'll do with Calderon, since he seems to love Ford. I say to enjoy the ride and worry about Calderon only if and when Ford starts to eat into his minutes significantly.
Feds (Yonkers, NY)
Keeper baseball questions Keith. Oswalt, C. Young (P) or Carmona? Ordonez or Tejada?
Keith Lipscomb (3:28 PM)
I take Ordonez over Tejada for sure. I'm not all that big on Tejada overall. Still good, but I like Maggs more. As far as the pitchers go, if Young could only last longer than 6 innings, he would top this list for me. But he doesn't stick around long enough to get the wins Fausto and Oswalt will get for you. It's a toss-up for those two, but I'll go with the more proven Oswalt right now.
Josh Smith (ATL)
Will I lead the league in blocks this year?
Keith Lipscomb (3:29 PM)
Sorry, Josh. I don't see you catching the Camby Man...but finishing second is nothing to be ashamed of, especially for someone who is guard-eligible in many fantasy leagues.
John(NY)
Keith...please give me some of your undervalued fantasy baseball players going into this season..thanks
Keith Lipscomb (3:34 PM)
This is always a tough question to answer, because every draft that I'm in is different. But I'll throw a couple names out of guys who I expect could be better than they were last year with good health, of course: Josh Hamilton, Raul Ibanez (every year), Edwin Encarnacion, James Loney, Geovany Soto. And Mike Cameron and Milton Bradley, as suspended/injured guys not to forget about. We'll see how Bradley's knee is, but he will hit in a favorable spot in that Texas lineup.
Dan, Ma
Which duo will give me more points over the last 2 weeks in the nfl, D.Driver and S.Goskowski or R.Moss and L.Tynes?
Keith Lipscomb (3:37 PM)
Well, I personally feel it'll be the Pack and Pats, so in theory, you'd get 4 games from Driver/Gostkowski, but Driver's been such a non-factor overall in fantasy, I'd rather go with the stud in Moss for two games and take the chance the Giants get a bunch of field goals and maybe even steal a win in Lambeau, which is entirely possible.
Todd, San Diego
Keith, There's been a lot of talk that Magglio will not have anywhere near the kind of season he did last year. Do you feel it's getting to the point where he will be undervalued in drafts because of this talk?
Keith Lipscomb (3:40 PM)
Yeah, Todd, I think there is something to that, because I don't think you'll find anyone who feels Maggs will come close to repeating that BA, or even stay healthy for a full season, for that matter. While I expect the BA to come down to the .300-310 range, I still expect 22-25 homers and 100 RBI and 95-100 runs. Nothing wrong with that, right?
Sean (WI)
Keith, many are really high on Haren this year. Would you keep him over Byrnes & Hart? I have to choose 2 or those 3 to go along with Wright, Vlad, & Utley.
Keith Lipscomb (3:43 PM)
Since you've got such a great start on your offense and Byrnes and Hart provide similar things, I'd definitely keep Haren and even though I don't expect Byrnes to steal 50 again, I'd keep him over Hart, but not by much. I really like Hart a lot.
Ryan (MD)
I'm in a league that redrafts playoff FFL rosters each week. Will Rivers be able to start and finish the game this week? Or is Volek the safer pick?
Keith Lipscomb (3:46 PM)
Rivers has to start, doesn't he? I mean, it's a chance to get to the Super Bowl. There's no telling how he'll fare physically, but I'm sure the Pats will do their best to make him uncomfortable. It's not like Rivers is a scrambler anyway, so his style of play won't have to change. I just don't like the matchup for either Chargers QB, especially with Gates extremely hampered with that toe injury.
Jamaal (Marlton, NJ)
Jamal Crawford has been on a tear recently! I know he won't sustain this pace, but do you see the FG% hanging around 44 or 45 % rather than 40%? Thanks.
Keith Lipscomb (3:48 PM)
I can't say I do, Jamaal. He just takes too many tough shots over the course of the season for that to happen. As hot as he's been recently, he's still only shooting 42% for the season. I just think he's a 41%-type of guy, sorry to say. But that being said, I do think he'll finish the season very strong, especially with Steph likely to miss considerable time, if not the rest of the season.
Jason (Atlanta)
Cano at $11 or K. Johnson at $1....who's the better keeper?
Keith Lipscomb (3:53 PM)
I like Kelly Johnson this season now that Renteria is gone and he should have the 2B job to himself. And for a buck? That's pretty good. While I like Cano as a 20-100-100 type of player this season, the only places Cano is definitely better than Johnson is RBI and BA. I see Cano more as the .306 hitter and not the .342 one from '06, so the difference isn't as pronounced. I think you can use your money elsewhere to get another stud possibly and still be steady at 2B.
Jim, Boston
I was leading the league in assists, down in Pts, 3s, TO, FG%. I have Deron, Chauncey, Bibby, and Felton. felton = assists and horrible everything else. I dropped felton for nate rob. good move? also, foye is available?
Keith Lipscomb (3:55 PM)
I'm one that doesn't drool over Robinson, really. I think he 10 and 8-assist nights won't be common, because he's not a great distributor. He can certainly score, but doesn't do a lot of other things that Felton can't do. I've been waiting for Felton to turn it on, and maybe I'll be waiting all season, but I'd personally rather have Felton.
Lee(tempe)
Back to Calderon, I was offered duncan Str8 up, have to take that right?
Keith Lipscomb (3:59 PM)
Duncan's job for the remainder of the season is definitely better defined than Calderon, like I mentioned earlier, but it's actually a harder decision than it may sound, because Calderon is such a dominant assist man when he's getting these big minutes. He's scoring enough,as well. If you don't need Calderon's assists so much, then yes, definitely do the deal. Duncan is still a valuable player, just not what he once was, from a scoring standpoint and in blocks.
Mitch (Grand Rapids)
I am in a 3-player keeper league, 12 teams. Take this team and you try and decide 3 guys to walk into next year with: Tom Brady, Joseph Addai, Marion Barber, Larry Johnson, Reggie Bush, Terrell Owens. Thanks a lot Keith, keep up the good and hard work!
Keith Lipscomb (4:01 PM)
Brady, Barber and Johnson for me.
Joey(NY)
Buzzer Beater - i'm in a keeper league where i'd have to give up my first 2 rounds to keep 2 guys ... should i give em up and hang on to peavy and prince fielder ? or just peavy ? or neither ?
Keith Lipscomb (4:04 PM)
Not knowing everything about your league, like where you'd be picking, who would be left to select, etc. there's no question that Fielder and Peavy are players that will go in the first two rounds of every draft. Not sure if that helps you, but if you keep them, you're getting top-20 value for sure!
Mike: Dallas TX
Barber over Addai? What?
Keith Lipscomb (4:05 PM)
Yes, I know it's not conventional, but I do like Barber more than Addai next year. Julius Jones will be gone, Barber can be a touchdown machine and should get more opportunities in '08, which intrigues me.
Keith Lipscomb (4:06 PM)
That's all for this week. Good to have a little back-and-forth at the end there. It's what makes fantasy fun. There are no right answers for next season. Thanks for all the questions and have a great weekend everyone!
