Buzzmaster (12:03 PM)
Phew! Just made it here to start the chat.
Ryan (Los Angeles)
Buzz is in the house. How was that dog yesterday?
Buzzmaster (12:06 PM)
Good, actually. Authentic Chicago hot dog. I was very impressed.
Godish (Chicago)
Buzz, you smell like Tom Petty.
ELO-ORLANDO
so your dressed and out of your room?
Buzzmaster (12:06 PM)
Yes, yes. And I've made it down to our compound. But just barely.
Buzzmaster (12:07 PM)
And on the walk over to our Boiler Room scene here, I passed a woman on a horse, with an ad written on the horse's backside. She was just sitting in front of this store. Very bizarre.
Godish (Chicago)
You were late, slacker.
jason
you the same buzz master as yesterday
Buzzmaster (12:08 PM)
There's only one Buzzmaster.
Zach (Montezuma, IA)
Hey, did you hear about the two radio stations that got in a fight with each other on-air yesterday?
Buzzmaster (12:09 PM)
No, but htat sounds cool.
Will (Minny via AZ)
I hate being on hold
rerun (su)
i know i shouldn't ask, but what did the horses butt say?
Buzzmaster (12:09 PM)
I don't know. It had some name of a store and a phone number. I try not to look at horses' rear ends.
Zach (Montezuma, IA)
The one and only Buzz!
RAY GORDON REID SCOTTSDALE ARIZONA 35257
COMMENT NUMBER .2 AT 12,10 NOW PM GO GIANTS BUZZY MASTER

Tom (Peoria)
Surprise Surprise Buzz is late.
Hank (Portland)
TGIF Buzz. Have an In-&-Out for me will ya?
Buzzmaster (12:11 PM)
I will try.
Buzzmaster (12:11 PM)
My last weekday for lunch, so it will be a tough choice picking out one last place to go.
Hank (Portland)
Hey Buzz, what's the chat schedule for the weekend? Are you doing any more of these?
Buzzmaster (12:11 PM)
Nothing until Sunday for the game.
Godish (Chicago)
I'm giving up booze for Lent. I'm already shaking thinking about it.
Matt (Iowa)
Buzz, do you get police escorted around?
Buzzmaster (12:11 PM)
Yes, but not for the reasons you might think.
Chris (LA CA)
will johan get it done today? t minus 2 hours
Buzzmaster (12:12 PM)
I thought the deadline was 5 p.m. ET?
Zach (Montezuma, IA)
The two stations were WEEI and KLAC... WEEI thought that the other one was being too loud at the Phoenix Convention Center yesterday...
Will (Minny via AZ)
Nah, Buzz has a years' supply of Axe and Old Spice in his carry on. He's all good.
mike (az)
buzz, 2 days ago i met justin upton, yesterday MB3. I wish the superbowl was here every year!
Chris (LA CA)
man, im bummed my chat days end today, but at least i wont get fired!! although the damage might have already been done
Will (Minny via AZ)
Buzz, can you go pick me up an In and Out and bring it down to 175th and Bell. I'll be out front waiting...thanks man.
Mike (PA)
Buzz, wheres tonight's party?
Buzzmaster (12:13 PM)
I don't think there will be one. Buzz, as well as the rest of the .com folks, were left off the guest list. What the heck is that all about?!?!
Chris (LA CA)
i thought it was 2 pm eastern
Michael (Palm Harbor, FL)
I was thinking the same...5 PM EST
Pete (( Canada ))
Buzz i would go with the Steak.....mmmmm
Chris (LA CA)
i heard an interview with that senator about the NFL. he sounded angry about that eagles super bowl.
Ed (LA)
Hey Buzz, if you go to in&out get your burger and fried 'animal style' It's the goods.
Buzzmaster (12:14 PM)
I'll keep that in mind.
Albi (Manhattan)
Buzz, Get any golf in when at Arizona or too cold?
Buzzmaster (12:14 PM)
I was thinking about it, but I decided against bringing the clubs when the pre-trip weather reports weren't looking so great. Now, I might regret that decision a little bit.
Denny (Visalia)
Buzz, how's the bunker holding up?
Buzzmaster (12:15 PM)
Nothing's falling apart and we haven't been raided by the police yet. Both good things.
Senate Judiciary Committee (D.C.)
murders? nah Drugs? nah Baseball? been tehre. Spy-gate? now we got somethin!!
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Just a reminder Buzz. When you get home, you will need an actual key to get into the house. Swiping the card will not work.
Buzzmaster (12:15 PM)
Thanks for the reminder.
Buzzmaster (12:15 PM)
Just a reminder to you folks, our first chat guest is Gregg Easterbrook. He's chatting at 12:30 p.m. ET.
Michael (Palm Harbor, FL)
Stop the presses! The Red Sox just signed 1B Sean Casey to a 1yr deal (yeah that was sarcasm)
Will (Minny via AZ)
Buzz, I have you on our guest list for the party tonight...make your way west to Surprise and we'll take care of you.
rerun (su)
buzz, you tired of the scene yet? wanna get home?
Buzzmaster (12:16 PM)
It's fun being around everything, but at some point you have to go home.
Will (Minny via AZ)
And yes, the deadline is 5pm EST. You freakin eastcoasters not caring about the biggest deal of the year...here's to hoping it doesn't get done.
Denny (Visalia)
I can see in my crystal ball that today is gonna be one of those days in sportsnation
evan (fort lauderdale)
happy friday to ya buzz...hope you enjoy your weekend in az
Jesse (MA)
I hit more homers then Sean Casey Last year...of course I was at a little league park and it was softball...but still.
Zach (Montezuma, IA)
I bet it doesn't knowing New York sports trends...
Jason (PA)
good job boston........sign a washed up 1st baseman.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
That should make an interesting start to the SB chat day. Definitely out of my league.
Denny (Visalia, CA)
Buzz, on an average day this week how many freaking questions are you getting?
Buzzmaster (12:21 PM)
I don't know if I like your tone, sir.
Hank (Portland)
TMQ is the man. Is he actually going to be there? Have you met him before?
Buzzmaster (12:22 PM)
I haven't met him before. Just e-mails and phone calls. But he's a pretty cool guy.
Will (Minny via AZ)
Hey Buzz, just got an email looking for someone to run the clock for the 9th grade and JV basketball games this afternoon...you in?
Buzzmaster (12:22 PM)
Sure. What's the pay? I'll have Drew Rosenhaus give you a ring.
Zach (Montezuma, IA)
Why would Rosenhaus want you as a client? Besides, his hands are probably full with T.O.
Jam (Saratoga(n.Y))
Next question!
ELO-ORLANDO
What is the strangest thing you have seen so far, that you can talk about? besides the horse's butt
Buzzmaster (12:26 PM)
The horse's butt was kinda weird. Ines's proposal was strange. But, all in all, nothing too too crazy down here. These West Coasters don't go nuts, I guess.
Tom (Chicago)
You couldn't get Agent X to represent you?
Will (Minny via AZ)
And a dozen poptarts. I'm sure I can work in an appearance fee and a tshirt.
Ben (Jackson)
Buzz has twenty-five hundred reasons to live.
Buzzmaster (12:26 PM)
More like just 25.
Will (Minny via AZ)
$10/hour, can you be here by 3:30?
Buzzmaster (12:27 PM)
Hmmmm, for 10/hour I might think about it. But I'll be sure to hit the stop the clock button several times when I'm not supposed to, to make sure I drag things out.
Buzzmaster (12:27 PM)
Three minutes from Gregg!
Denny (Visalia, CA)
Hey I am a West Coaster, we go plenty nuts, trust me, just not in AZ where the average age of a resident is 83.4
Zach (Montezuma, IA)
Why didn't you go to the Suns game last night?
Buzzmaster (12:28 PM)
I was too busy working.
speddy (pembroke,nc)
The Patriots will win by more than a touchdown because of spygate
Will (Minny via AZ)
Nice. Just what you want to do, drag out a freshmen game...atleast it's not girls. Guh...
Zach (Montezuma, IA)
Working?? The Suns game wasn't during this...
Buzzmaster (12:29 PM)
There's more work to be done even after the chat shuts down. And here's Gregg!
Hank (Portland)
TMQ: You're the freakin man! What are the implication or results if they do find that the Spygate tapes haven't been destroyed and there is incriminating info on them?
Gregg Easterbrook (12:32 PM)
See this morning's New York Times. Senator Arlen Specter, ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, just called for a congressional investigation of spygate. Also a man named Matt Walsh is mentioned in the story. Remember the name Matt Walsh.
Robert (Huntsville, Al)
What does NE cheating in only the first quarter of the first game of the season have to do with the rest of the year?
Gregg Easterbrook (12:34 PM)
Nothing. The sideline tape shot at the Jets' game was a minor matter for which New England has already been punished. If the Jets sideline tape was all that mattered, even people like me would say, "Old news." But there may have been something much worse. Why else would the NFL destroy the tapes?
evan (fort lauderdale)
tmq, i just came across your ariticles a few weeks ago...very enjoyable read...Do you think that the dillon panthers have any shot at the playoffs since there are only 3 games left in the season and only 8 or 9 more episodes left?
Gregg Easterbrook (12:35 PM)
My understanding is that in Texas, everyone makes the playoffs -- that's why 12 divisions each with a 64-team field. I am confident the Panthers can repeat as Texas state champions, if they ever actually take the field. We'll see if they play in the episode tonight.
Lord H. Latts (Brooklyn)
The Pats are'nt even one of the five best teams I've seen.
Gregg Easterbrook (12:37 PM)
The Pats are fabulous. Their OL isn't cheating, their DBs aren't cheating. Etc. But if their coaches are cheating, it is a major black eye for the team and the league.
Wayde (Washington DC)
Maybe the NFL destroyed the tapes because there was evidence of other teams doing the same thing. Ever think of that?
Gregg Easterbrook (12:38 PM)
This is a leading possibility -- the worry that if the tapes were revealed, the NFL would look like the World Wrestling Federation. I don't want that to happen. You don't want that to happen. That's why the truth MUST come out.
Godish (Chicago)
Why do newspapers endorse political candidates? Is it all about the money?
Gregg Easterbrook (12:39 PM)
Newspapers have endorsed candidates for a century. They don't get any money from candidates. Television stations do, which is why they don't endorse.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Why all of a sudden is our government so interested in what is happening in pro sports?
Gregg Easterbrook (12:40 PM)
Congress has always been interested -- look at the baseball hearings of previous decades. The teams play in publicly subsidized stadia and broadcast over public airwaves that have licensing restrictions.
Hilal (Boston, MA)
Punting is overrated. I always laugh when offenses punt inside their opponents 40 yard line.
Gregg Easterbrook (12:42 PM)
I would love to see a study on whether punting inside the Maroon Zone (opponents 30 to 45 depending on weather) is 1-to-1 correlated with defeat.
Patrick (Louisville)
Stop watching FNL. Just let it die a slow, melo-dramatic death.
Gregg Easterbrook (12:44 PM)
But I want to find out if the Panthers will score a touchdown on 4th and 99! also, whether in the finale, all the teen characters will catch all the other teen characters kissing someone else
Mikey (Philly)
Why is the fumble-rooski illegal? Bring back the fumble-rooski!
Gregg Easterbrook (12:45 PM)
The explanation the NCAA gave is that the play is so hard to officiate. But I agree, I love the fumblerooski.
El Navajo (Shiprock, New Mexico)
Will the roof at Univ. Phoenix Stadium be open?
Gregg Easterbrook (12:46 PM)
I hope they close it if it rains! I got wet enough last year in Miami. I'm still wet from that game.
Pete (( Canada ))
what do you think of the United states building a permanent base on the moon
Gregg Easterbrook (12:46 PM)
It's crazy. I am working on an article for Atlantic Monthly about that.
Albi (Manhatta)
Did you see the picture ESPN has for you? It's Black and white and makes you look like a 70's Poker Player.
Gregg Easterbrook (12:47 PM)
How do you know I'm not B/W?
Rob(NY)
I don't understand why the Middle line backer doesent have a head set. we would'nt even have this problem.
Gregg Easterbrook (12:48 PM)
The NFL Competitive Committee is expected this winter to vote on giving the MLB a helmet radio just like the QB. That would seem to cut down on signal stealing.
AP (Boynton Beach,FL)
Gregg how come so many people are in love with the Giants beating the Buccaneers, Cowboys, and Packers is one thing beating the best team in NFL HISTORY IS ANOTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gregg Easterbrook (12:49 PM)
People are rooting for the Giants because they want a good game. Also, much of the media is based in NYC and loves the Giants.
Majeed
Is Lyla garrity the hottest 26 year old high school student or what?
Gregg Easterbrook (12:49 PM)
She's 27. And if you try to ask her out, you will only catch her kissing someone else.
Mandy (Manhattan, NY)
So is Brady overrated or underrated?
Gregg Easterbrook (12:51 PM)
He's gotten so much hype he can't be underrated. He's one of the best QBs ever. The technical aspects of his throws are great. He reads the field. He's a leader. Depending on what happens in the next 5 years, he could lay a legit claim to best ever.
Robert (Huntsville, Al)
I often wonder if football experts even watch football at all. They never point out things that actually matter, and then they shout off about the Jags are going to beat the Pats, or the Giants will beat the Pats. Do they serve them amnesia pills every week?
Gregg Easterbrook (12:52 PM)
TMQ has long contended that sportswriters do not pay enough attention to the action on the field. The press box atmosphere is very chummy and distracting. Many (not all) sportswriters writes so much about the press conferences postgame because they weren't paying attention during the game.
Michael (Palm Harbor, FL)
How often do you think the Giants will blitz Brady? And do you think they can be successful without blitzing?
Gregg Easterbrook (12:54 PM)
The Giants and Eagles are the sole team in the NFL this season who 7-blitzed and did not get burned. the NFC East seems to get this tactic. I expect the Giants to try it.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
In your opinion, which is worse: Using modern technology to garner an on-field edge or using performance-enhancing substances to gain an on-field edge?
Gregg Easterbrook (12:55 PM)
Since all sports rules are arbitrary, it depends on the league's rules. Steroids sets a bad example for the young. Cheating sets a bad example for the young. If you want to play, you should play by the rules.
Alan (Indianapolis)
Shouldn't it be expected of QB's to be able to read defensive formations and call a play appropriately? it seems like stealing defensive signals is just lazy.
Gregg Easterbrook (12:57 PM)
The speed of the game is so fast -- even at the high school level, the QB only has a couple seconds to make his read. One more question.
AP (Boynton Beach,FL)
Gregg if the Giants get down 14-0 early on is the game over with?
Gregg Easterbrook (12:59 PM)
No. But if that happens, they can't panic and go pass wacky. If you're down 14-0 early, you stick to you game plan. Thanks everyone -- am headed to the airport for Arizona.
Buzzmaster (1:00 PM)
Thanks Gregg!
Coffey (Ky)
Patriots by 2 td's?.....wha ya think?
Diego ((Chicago))
Buzz, where are you having lunch today?
Buzzmaster (1:01 PM)
I haven't decided yet. But I am taking suggestions and coupons.
Jordan (Peoria)
My retail manager just made brats and mini pizzas for lunch since no one is coming into the store due to the snow...SB might kill me
Brad (Gadsden,Alabama)
buzz, about 40 hours or so is the big game
Buzzmaster (1:02 PM)
We've got Alex Smith in approximately 15 minutes.
Denny (Visalia, CA)
Buzz please expand on your earlier comment that there is still much to do after the chat closes, like what wiping down the screen? Maybe run the anti virus program?
Buzzmaster (1:03 PM)
Yeah, all that. Scheduling the next days chats. Updating the SN index. Building out all these fabulous chat rooms. Re-confirming chat guests. Panicking that the agent you're working with will get back to you on a guest. Etc., etc., etc.
Robert (Huntsville, Al)
Buzz, I would donate money to a *weekly chat with Gregg Easterbrook*. You think we could raise enough monney to get him to do it? It is nice chatting with someone who actually knows what they are talking about...
Buzzmaster (1:03 PM)
He doest have good stuff, doesn't he?
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Let's count how many people hound Buzz for the next 15 minutes about when Alex Smith will be here and why isn't he here yet. Over/under is five.
Jordan (Peoria)
Denny, that is a lot of Pop Tart wrappers to clean up. Plus cleaning his keyboard from all the crumbs
Pete (( Canada ))
Hey Buzz i still the steak is the way to go
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
It has to be In -n- Out. This should not even be a question Buzz.
Buzzmaster (1:04 PM)
Ahhh, but you have to account for the new traffic and try to find a place to park when you come back factor. These two obstacles haven't been there earlier in the week.
Jack (NB Canada)
40 hours wouuld put the game around 2 am local time, weird time for a game.
Robert (Huntsville, Al)
Buzz, find Round Table Pizza. You will thank me later...
Denny (Visalia, CA)
Buzz I thought your job was easy, that sounds like work, which obviously I am not very good at.
Jason: Sarasota Florida
Ok, the dome is kinda cool, but y'all play'n yourselves if you'd rather see a game in the dome.
evan (fort lauderdale)
buzz, you have to do in n out and sonic 1 more time before u leave
Robert (Huntsville, Al)
Try Round Table Pizza. The best pizza in the WORLD. I think it is still in Arizona...
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Mike Tirico is getting Adam Sandler today Buzz. Can you at least get Jimmy Fallon?
Jordan (Peoria)
Can we have one of our Canadien friends let us know the outcome of the game tomorrow night so we can bet on it?
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
But you only went once earlier in the week, right? You disappoint me with your procrastination.
Buzzmaster (1:06 PM)
You're shocked by that?
Diego ((Chicago))
Bad weather in the northeast.
Sandro (Miami via Boston)
Roaring Forks - just north of old-town Scottsdale along N Scottsdale Road
Robert (Huntsville, Al)
Oh, and when you find Round Table Pizza, save me a couple of large ones and fly back and stop in Huntsville.
Tom (Chicago)
I had Round Table when I was in California. It was good, but best in the world? I wouldn't go that far.
Tom (Chicago)
Buzz, did Jared bring you Subway earlier in the week?
Buzzmaster (1:08 PM)
No. It wasn't lunch time yet. So no Subway. But I eat that a lot back East. So I want to eat something I can't have in the ol' CT.
Diego ((Chicago))
I am going to have Little Caesar's pizza, breadsticks, buffalo wings, subway sandwiches and chips and dip for the big game if anybody wants to come to my house.
Jalter (Big Huge Law Firm in NYC)
Buzz, I like the Giants in case you care
Keith(MD)
Buzz, when you flying back? Are we still having the MB on Monday?
Buzzmaster (1:09 PM)
Oh yes. Don't you worry. We never miss the MB.
Christian - Downers Grove, IL
Round Table pizza the best in the world? Clearly you have never been to Chicago you poor sap
Denny (Visalia, CA)
Buzz, please talk to the head honchos at ESPN about putting a button on the chat so when the bosses walk by iyou click the button and it goes to a spreadsheet, so it appears to them that I'm working,
Buzzmaster (1:10 PM)
Funny you should mention that. We are currently working on a SportsNation index page redesign. That has been an idea thrown about.
Jordan (Peoria)
Jalter, you sound like a dork
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Shocked? No, but still disappointed. Let's not forget you also passed on a free steak dinner this week. You did not bring your food A-game to Arizona.
Sarah (Austin, TX)
what about pizza for lunch?
Buzzmaster (1:11 PM)
There is a pizza place right across the street. Not too bad either. I might check it out if I don't feel like driving anywhere.
Diego ((Chicago))
Chicago has the best pizza!
Kathy (St. Paul MN)
Who cares what the boss thinks?
Buzzmaster (1:11 PM)
Also a good point.
Buzzmaster (1:12 PM)
Alex Smith in 5 minutes!
Buzzmaster (1:14 PM)
Just got a call from Alex Smith. He'll be here in about 5 minutes.
Buzzmaster (1:14 PM)
Keep sending in those questions!
Denny's Boss (Visalia, CA)
Denny, could you please step in my office for a moment
Buck (NY)
Alex Smith in 5 minutes. Great. maybe he will ignore my questions just like Buzz.
Buzzmaster (1:15 PM)
We'll see what we can do.
Tom (Chicago)
The only issue I have with Chicago pizza is that you can only eat it so often without feeling like you might die.
Thomas (Atlanta, GA)
Nobody's Perfect....the PATS are nobodys
Paul (Portland, OR)
How many minutes again 'till Alex...was it 5?
Buzzmaster (1:16 PM)
You bite your tongue.
Sarah (Austin, TX)
well I am excited for AS
D (MI)
Do you think of instead of doing a piece on Ernie Adams maybe Wright should have done it on Matt Walsh, who was involved with video department for the Pats.
Lady Buzz (Bristol)
Buzz stay in AZ please. I like having Matt Damon sleepover
Buzzmaster (1:16 PM)
That ain't right.
Buzzmaster (1:17 PM)
Get those questions in for Alex Smith!
Hank (Portland)
Buzz just list the places within walking distance and let us vote to decide for you. Then you can ban everyone who suggested it if
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
You're kind of pushy with the question request Buzz. Isn't anyone asking things of Alex?
Buzzmaster (1:18 PM)
No. I just want to make sure people know that now would be a good time to get your question in, while I can see it and queue it up. When we get Alex, it's tougher to type and look for new questions at the same time.
Matt Starkville MS
alex... do u miss the college days in football?
Alex Smith (1:22 PM)
Good question. There's definitely an aspect of college football when you make the jump that it isn't the same. When you're a student athlete and you're living in a dorm and you're playing for your school, that atmosphere, that lifestyle. There's so much pride involved. There's something about that that is never the same again. There are aspects that you miss, but there are new aspects in the NFL that are new and exciting.
Brian (Madison, WI)
What defensive player worries you the most when you see him across the line of scrimmage?
Alex Smith (1:23 PM)
That's a good question. As a QB, I try not to focus on individuals. I try to see the bigger picture and the team. Brian Urlacher, though to answer the question, is a guy that always seems to make a difference. With his size and speed, he makes a difference in the game.
Jake (Philly)
How are you enjoying the offseason? what are you doing in Phoenix?
Alex Smith (1:23 PM)
This is a first for me. I had surgery 7 weeks ago. I'm rehabbing. I've spent all my time in the rehab.
Alex Smith (1:24 PM)
I'm down here in Arizona, doing a little bit of work. I have a lot of sponsors that have been with me since I came into the league. So just helping them out.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Question for Alex: What WR, past or present, would you love to play with for just one game?
Alex Smith (1:25 PM)
That's a tough question. There are so many talented guys out there. The one name that comes to mind, growing up a football fan, is Jerry Rice. He's the greatest of all time and changed the game forever. Obviously, being a 9er and having the chance to meet him. That's a name that stands out in my mind.
Scott Chandler, Arizona
Alex, What are your feelings of working with Mike Martz, now your 4th Offensive Coordinater in the last 4 years? How does the turnover rate of all these different coordinators affect you?
Alex Smith (1:26 PM)
I'm really excited about coach Martz. Last year was a frustrating year for me. For coach Martz coming in, I'm excited. Four OCs in four years is not good, but I'm really excited about the chance to learn from him.
Aaron Omaha
Alex hows the shoulder?
Alex Smith (1:27 PM)
It's coming along. It was a rough surgery that I had. I had to be in a sling for 6 weeks. It's a gradual recovery. I'm doing the rehab every day. For a while I couldn't sleep, because the shoulder was propped up. I'm gradually building up the throwing time.
Mike (Las Vegas, NV)
Alex, I went to high school with Arnold Parker. What was it like going against him and Eric Weddle in practice as a Ute? I know they must have made you better. Arnold was always the fastest on the field.
Alex Smith (1:28 PM)
You know, definitely made me better. That's something that I say about coming into the league from Utah, we had just as much talent in the starting lineup as any team in the country. We made each other better and really pushed each other.
Pete (( Canada ))
Alex Who do you like in the Superbowl and why ?
Alex Smith (1:29 PM)
I actually don't have a preference, but I'm probably rooting for the Giants.
Casey (Spokane, WA)
Alex, have you had a chance to sit down with Martz and look at his offense?
Alex Smith (1:29 PM)
I haven't, actually, because our coaching staff was doing the Senior Bowl. I spoke to him a few times on the phone. But we'll start to sit down and hash it all out.
Vic (Kailua, HI)
What needs do you think the organization will address first on Draft day?
Alex Smith (1:30 PM)
I think they'll continue to get better in all phases. We're a team that continues to get good players. I don't think you look at any position and think that we're set. I think they'll try to improve on both sides of the ball.
B.J. (DC)
Alex, what was the root of the offense's struggles last year? You guys never seemed to be on the same page and never had a true philosophy.
Alex Smith (1:31 PM)
It's tough to say. I think losing a guy like Norv Turner was hard. We had a lot of injuries, but a lot of teams had injuries. But for whatever reason we struggled to get on track. We had some self-inflicted wounds, with some penalties.
Jay (Birmingham, AL)
Alex do u think you have the weapons that Mike Martz need to be successful.
Alex Smith (1:32 PM)
I think you're always looking to get better. No matter who you are. We're always looking for that. Whether it's OL, WR, RB, you're looking for guys to come in and play a role to win a game.
Denny (Visalia, CA)
Alex, do you feel you are getting a fair shake in SF, it sure seems to me that there isn't alot around you on the offensive side
Alex Smith (1:33 PM)
As a QB, you're always going to get too much credit for winning and the blame for loses. As a QB you know that. If you don't, you should not be a QB. Learning to play with new guys, I think you need that stability to get to the highest level.
Alex Smith (1:34 PM)
Thanks for chatting. I just wanted to mention one thing - the new Reebok cleats, the Speed Burner. It's something that just came out. I'm using it in my training and you'll see a few guys wearing it on Sunday. It's something I'm excited about. They're a very comfortable cleat.
Buzzmaster (1:36 PM)
Next up is Patrick Hruby from Page 2!
Patrick Hruby (1:38 PM)
Hey all, Patrick Hruby from Page 2 here. I'm not current or former professional football player and I don't have anything to plug (I wish! Lucrative gig), so consider me your chat substitute teacher for the next half hour. In other words, I'd be perfectly happy to put on a movie and let you goof off in the back of class while I read a magazine.
Sandro (Miami via Boston)
Is everyone on this chat here to 'plug' something?
Patrick Hruby (1:40 PM)
Hey, one more thing I'd like to mention. I'm writing articles for this really cool section of ESPN.com called Page 2. I think you'll get a lot of satisfication out of it, and for best results I suggest clicking on stories and links multiple times so ESPN.com can beat out Yahoo sports in the monthly internet ratings. Did you have a question about plugging stuff? I forgot.
Tim (Detroit)
Patrick- What would your pro video gaming nickname be?
Patrick Hruby (1:41 PM)
Easy. "Hrude" Pat Hruby. Also my pro wrestling nickname.
evan (fort lauderdale)
can i have a pass to the restroom? i promise to be back before this chat ends
Patrick Hruby (1:42 PM)
Absolutely. In fact, take my car keys, too. What do I care? As a subsitute teacher, I get paid either way!
Jack (NB Canada)
What movie, Any Given Sunday?
Patrick Hruby (1:45 PM)
Speaking of plugs, I'd like to declare my undying love for this movie. Really. Probably my no. 1 cinematic guilty pleasure. It's just so over the top awesome in its sheer cheesiness. The casting in the movie is pitch perfect -- from Aaron Eckhart as the frustrated boy wonder o-coordinator to LL as the egotistical RB to Dennis Quaid as the beat up old QB to Lauren Holly as his shrewish wife ... oh, and don't forget Liz Berkely as a bar prostitute. Big stretch after "Showgirls," I'm sure. In this chat WE LIVE AND DIE FOR THAT INCH!
Kevin (Dallas)
Patrick, at ESPN do the .com'ers get along with the on-air personalities? Or is it an intense rivalry that will one day lead to bloodshed?
Patrick Hruby (1:46 PM)
Ha ha. I like my chances in the coming ESPNocalypse, I think I can outrun most of the studio talent.
Mike (Las Vegas, NV)
Sub movies: Holes, March of the Penguins, Top Gun...but not Scarface
Patrick Hruby (1:48 PM)
Yeah, Top Gun is a substitute teacher standby -- almost like the Carl Banks to the sub teacher's Bill Parcells.
Ryan (Los Angeles)
Has Liz Berkeley played anything other than the prostitute type? EVER?
Patrick Hruby (1:49 PM)
Actually, she played a bar floozie -- big difference, I know -- in "Roger Dodger," which is a fantasically mean-spirited and hilarious little movie, I recommend it highly to all of you.
Ben (Brooklyn, NY)
Who will win more career Super Bowls. Peyton or Eli?
Patrick Hruby (1:49 PM)
Well, Peyton has one already, right? That ought to answer your question.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
I think if you are doing a sub movie, Slap Shot is a good choice. Hockey needs a boost in the arm and exposing impressionable minds to this film could help.
Patrick Hruby (1:51 PM)
Agreed. The only problem is that actual hockey is sort of a let down after watching Slap Shot ... I think what the NHL really needs, beyond getting off what Tony Kornheiser has accurately dubbed the "bicycle network," is more violence and goonery, the bloodier and more slapticky the better.
Kevin (Dallas)
Jessie Spano was a prostitute type? Those amphetamines really took her down quick huh.
Patrick Hruby (1:52 PM)
I'm not sure about that -- if amphetiamine use led people down to the road to prostitution, then Denny Neagle would have a lot more company in MLB. So to speak.
Jack (Toronto)
I always get you confused with Jim Huber. So, I'm guessing you're not a seventy year old golf analyst?
Patrick Hruby (1:53 PM)
Don't worry -- people confuse us all the time! (Actually, who the heck is Jim Huber?)
Andy (Ann Arbor, MI)
Which song do you hope Tom Petyy plays? I'm hoping American Girl, Mary Jane's Last Dance, or Free Fall'n.
Patrick Hruby (1:55 PM)
American Girl. Good tune, but more than that, it's one of those songs that people think is peppy and upbeat, unless you actually listen to the lyrics, and then it's horribly ironic and bitter and depressing. Sort of like "Born in the USA" and "Hey Ya." I like songs like that, they pretty much show that no one really listens to or cares about lyrics and "songwriting," and if they do, they're John Mayer fans anyway and their opinions should be immediately discounted. Note: by "immediate discount" I mean John Mayer fans should not be allowed to vote or hold public office.
Brian (Madison, WI)
Let's be honest, you might be the most overrated writer on Page 2.
Patrick Hruby (1:56 PM)
"Might?"
D (MI)
Really enjoyed the piece of Victor Conte, but I was wondering about his daughter--is she single? Are most of the pictures blurry for a reason?
Patrick Hruby (1:58 PM)
I've been asked this at least 100 times! She's a very nice young woman, and also a mother. She asked me not to go into her personal life beyond that, so, there you go.
Josh (New York, NY)
Seeing that you have talented revievers and a good running back, do you think the front office of SF needs to work on the O-Line or pump up the defense?
Patrick Hruby (1:59 PM)
I'm not really worried, all I need is a good RB and talented revievers to dominate at Madden. By the way, do you talk like Scooby Doo in real life? "Randy Moth is playing reviver? Ruh-roh!"
Denny (Visalia)
Patrick is being a Page 2 cloumnist the equivalent of playing AAA ball in MLB? Do you think you're ready for the show yet, what have they told you to work on beofe your ESPNU call up?
Patrick Hruby (2:01 PM)
Honestly, it's more like being a major league BASEketball player: wildly different and largely dumb. At least most of the stuff I work on.
bledi (philadelphia)
are you a player in any sport
Patrick Hruby (2:02 PM)
No, but I once seriously considered ordering a "Players' U" sweatshirt in college, just to wear as a joke. I should get one for Gallo to wear the next time he's on ESPN news.
Dustin (Ft W. Indiana)
Is Tom Brady even capable of losing a Super Bowl? Is it even comprehensible?
Patrick Hruby (2:04 PM)
Sure, he almost lost two of them. But if you're talking THIS Super Bowl, it does seem pretty unlikely ... I think the Giants are getting a little too much credit for winning the NFC; on the other hand, they're a New York team, and it really isn't in the DNA of New York to view itself as an underdog.
congress (the hill)
why am i so overly concerned with the spygate tapes?
Patrick Hruby (2:04 PM)
Because real legislation is hard work?
Patrick Hruby (2:06 PM)
Actually, in all seriousness, I have a strong suspicion that there's much more to this Spygate thing than we'll ever know. And I'm positive there's a Deep Throat out there ... it's just a matter of them deciding to break the NFL's goofy omerta code and deciding to come forward.
D (MI)
How does that work with E-ticket piece: Are you approached or did you pitch the idea?
Patrick Hruby (2:07 PM)
Depends. I wanted to write about Victor Conte, but sometimes the editors come up with ideas and shop them with the writers they think would best pull them off. In all seriousness, it's probably the most rewarding type of work to be doing, even though the pieces generate a lot of stress.
Jack (SD)
Can you remember a time when a group of fans have been as cocky and annoying as Bostonians have been recently?
Patrick Hruby (2:08 PM)
Well, at my old job I covered the Subway Series. NY hearts NY.
Gray (Chicago)
Seriously, why would the NFL destroy all of those tapes so quickly?
Patrick Hruby (2:12 PM)
That's exactly what I'm getting at. Funny, but my editors and I talk about this all the time -- how good the NFL is at subtly controlling the media and its image. They're better than any actor or politician, and that's saying something. From criminal players to steroids to spygate, they're a teflon league ... it's almost as if they have a Jedi Mind Trick going, but that's probably giving them too much credit. Truth is, the league gets away with a lot because the public is willling to put up with a lot. We all keep watching and buying tickets and playing fantasy, right?
Greg(boston)
Yawn, you silly people with your conspiracy theories...Maybe the NFL destroyed the tapes due to the fact that they were what they were and by leaking them, all it would do is get more people talking about something they knew nothing about...Specter pandering to the idiot masses of Pitt surprises me none
Patrick Hruby (2:14 PM)
It's not really a conspiracy theory -- a conspiracy involves more than one entity, right? It's just the NFL practicing damage control, making a potentially embarassing situation go away before it gets worse. Happens all the time in business and politics and every other walk of life, so it's not that I think the NFL is being particularly nefarious here. More like smart. You're right that there's a big element of pandering vis a vis Specter. But then again, isn't that what politics is all about -- pandering?
Lil' Billy (Mr. Hruby's classrom)
Uh, Mr. Hruby the fire alarm is going off, should we not evacuate the building and go the safety spot past the swings?
Patrick Hruby (2:15 PM)
Every man for himself! But me first.
Matt (Grand Rapids)
What are you going to do with your rebate check from the government? I might use it toward a downpayment on a house I can't afford.
Patrick Hruby (2:16 PM)
I'm going to deposit it in a Chinese central bank! In other words, return to sender.
Marc (Malden, MA)
The only problem I have with Sen Specter is that he seems like he just wants to prove the Pats cheated against his beloved Eagles. If the Pats had beaten somebody else, he wouldn't care.
Patrick Hruby (2:17 PM)
That's probably the case, but to expect politicians to have pure motives is like ... expecting any character played by Liz Berkely to have pure motives.
Tommy(TheStatPack)
How do you pronounce your last name? Why would somebody but a H back to back with an R unless they are talking baseball stats?
Patrick Hruby (2:18 PM)
Silent "h." It's Czech. And I think the only real reason to put H and R together is for NHL goaltending purposes.
Eric (Indy)
There are alot of people who really hate the Patriots (Me being one of them) and I am for sure not going to watch the Super Bowl because of them being in it. Do you think the TV ratings for this SBowl drop because of all us Pats haters/Cheating scandals or will it rise because of them going for 19-0?(*)
Patrick Hruby (2:19 PM)
Oh, no, the ratings will be HUGE. Hate is a great motivator, NYC and Boston are huge media markets, and besides, it's ... the Super Bowl. What else you gonna watch?
D (MI)
Am I the only one that is outraged that the lady that does the voice for Bart Simpson gave $10 million to Xenu?
Patrick Hruby (2:20 PM)
Ha ha ha! I'm with you on this. Saw that this morning. You have to give Scientologists credit -- they don't waste time going after poor converts, do they?
Ted (St. Louis)
If Gallo is the greatest page 2 writer of this or any other time, do you think you have a shot to be #2 on Page 2?
Patrick Hruby (2:21 PM)
If I reach my potential, it'll just be me and Gallo.
Patrick Hruby (2:21 PM)
I was ^^^^ misquoted!
James(Boston)
Sorry, I can't hear Eric in Indy, the pumped in crowd noise from the dome is deafening!!!
Patrick Hruby (2:21 PM)
Touche!
Patrick Hruby (2:22 PM)
But you know where else they pump in crowd noise? The new freakin' Boston Garden! During a game with the Wizards, no less. Red Auerbach would NOT be pleased. In the words of Bill Walton, "how very, very SAD."
Tony (NYC)
It's just been reported that the Mets are not going to reach an agreement with Johan and he is going back to Minnesota for now. Not a good start to the weekend for NY'ers huh?
Patrick Hruby (2:24 PM)
Don't feel too bad -- Santana will probably end up with the Mets (the pressure will be huge), and if he doesn't, the club might be better off down the road. Dude has a lot of miles on the arm.
Paul (Portland, OR)
Um, Patrick, it's sacrilege to call it "Boston Garden". That's NOT Boston Garden, no matter where it is or who plays in the building.
Patrick Hruby (2:25 PM)
Sorry. TD Banknorth Fleet Chase Whatever Palace of Financial Services. Is that better?
James(Boston)
Patrick, they are trying to drown out all the silly business men who think having tix is a status symbol and don't know how to cheer...If one more corporate wife asks me to sit down during a sporting event, I may scream
Patrick Hruby (2:26 PM)
Scream loud enough and they won't have to pipe in noise! I feel your pain, though. I'm going to a Wizards game tonight and already dreading the in-arena MC. MAKE SOME NOOOOOISE! Belch. Can we all blame that dude in Detroit for this trend?
David (Buffalo Grove, IL)
Chicago pizza, OVERRATED! Clap/clap, clap/clap/clap. I live in Chicago and used to work at a Round Table in SF in college. Round Table rules!
Patrick Hruby (2:28 PM)
I lived in Chicago for a year and I respectfully disagree. In fact, I respectfully submit that you don't know anything about pizza. You say that again and we are not brothers!
Denny (Visalia, CA)
Patrick your closing in on an hour, don't you know that subs get paid a flat rate!
Patrick Hruby (2:29 PM)
Yeah, and what do you know? Top Gun is almost over.
Hank (Portland)
Hrude, if you want to hear a real crowd, come to watch the Blazers sometime and party like it's 2009 when Oden's back.
Patrick Hruby (2:31 PM)
'Bout time Portland fans had a team they could cheer for again. They're like the anti-Knicks at this point, aren't they? By the way, the single funniest sports photo I've ever seen was in SI, Dale Davis at some sort of Jailblazers PR event, team is handing out christmas trees and Davis is in a santa hat, bored and fiddling with his cell phone. Just hysterical.
Godish (Chicago)
I'm going to the open tryout for American Gladiators tomorrow. Any advice?
Patrick Hruby (2:32 PM)
Bring a mouthpiece. And realize that if you make it, you'll look terrible in HD, just like everyone else.
Kenny (Upstate N.Y.)
You might want to give the giants a little more credit. They have the momentum going in their direction. For instance, their running game and defense, not to mention the way manning has been playing. Brady is going to be a busy man back their and if the giants can correct the mistakes that they make in the secondary week 17 then the giants will have this wrapped up. Besides Jacobs and Bradshaw I think will put on an interesting show. I think Bradshaw will suprise everyone come sunday. Giants 31, Pats 17.
Patrick Hruby (2:34 PM)
Getting to Brady is the thing, isn't it? Easier said than done, even for the Giants D-line. Also, I'm not so sure that the NY secondary can correct their mistakes -- I think it's more a matter of physical talent than bad reads. I actually expect the Patriots to run the ball quite a bit.
Greg(boston)
I'm not trying out for American Gladiators tommorrow, any advice on what i should do instead?
Patrick Hruby (2:35 PM)
Buy a few cans of tennis balls. Get a broomstick and tape a pillow to the end of it. Have a friend pelt you with the balls, then hit you in the head with the pillow stick. Next best thing to actually trying out!
Wayde (Washington DC)
If I hear one more person say "The Giants have momentum" I may throw up. They're in the Superbowl. By definition, they have to have won at least two games in a row. The Giants have won three. The Pats have won 18.
Patrick Hruby (2:35 PM)
Excellent point. Besides, all of us have momentum, right now. The Earth is spinning and moving through space, right?
luke [sac]
Don't go...
Patrick Hruby (2:37 PM)
Ah, but I must. It's been fun, everyone. Enjoy the game and try not to get killed. Really. I wrote a story about how the SB can kill you on Page 2. Check it out if you have time.
Patrick Hruby (2:37 PM)
Adios!
Buzzmaster (2:37 PM)
Thanks, Patrick!
Buzzmaster (2:38 PM)
How's everyone doing?
Buzzmaster (2:39 PM)
I managed to make my way over here to media central. The heartbeat of the Super Bowl if you will. The ying to football's yang. The .. OK, that's enough of that.
Tom (Chicago)
I think all this SB coverage is wearing me down. I need the weekend to recover for Monday's MB.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Who's on deck for the chat Buzz?
Buzzmaster (2:41 PM)
Jemele Hill is coming up at the top of the hour .. that gives us 20 minutes to goof off .. wanna go on a walking tour of the media room? Hold on ..
Buzzmaster (2:43 PM)
OK, we're in. Just heard some agent looking guy use the term "sportainment" .. ugh ..
Buzzmaster (2:44 PM)
If Seth Wickersham happens to chat in the near future, someone should ask "So who was the blonde?"
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Sportainment, huh? I give you permission to use Tomlinsoned if needed, Buzz. No charge.
Kevin (Dallas)
Any oddball people there Buzz?
Buzzmaster (2:47 PM)
Looking ... lots and lots of blingedy bling and those uber-hipster t-shirts
Buzzmaster (2:48 PM)
Standing next to the MIT dude who took down Vegas as chronicled in Bringing Down The House
Doctor Harold (New Haven Hospital)
Buzz, I hope you are using the correct techniques in typing, if not you are a serious contender for carpel tunnel syndrome
Buzzmaster (2:50 PM)
OK, we're moving again .. circling around the NFL Network set ..
Buzzmaster (2:52 PM)
Someone just said the Warriors got Pau Gasol .. not all football talk in here apparently
Buzzmaster (2:54 PM)
Just ran into Jared again! No he's not carrying around a Subway sandwich.
Denny (Visalia)
the 80% of the chats this week haven't been football related
Buzzmaster (2:58 PM)
Good point.
Rob, Baltimore
Have you seen Drew Rosenhaus, I heard he was walking around with the "Burger King."
Buzzmaster (2:59 PM)
Saw The King yesterday! But he disappeared into an elevator before I could tackle him.
Buzzmaster (2:59 PM)
OK, Jemele is coming up momentarily!
Nick (Minneapolis)
Buzz you got the Gasol trade wrong
Buzzmaster (3:03 PM)
Sorry! Was just typing was I overheard! He got it wrong first! OK, Jemele should be joining us shortly!
ELO-ORLANDO
Who's the nicest person you've met there that plays for the NFL?
Jemele Hill (3:08 PM)
Lot of nice guys here. But the two coolest people I've met are Ben Roethlisberger (hope I spelled that right) and Donovan McNabb.
Hardley (New York)
Hey Jemele, how can Tom Brady be considered the "Golden Boy" when he left the mother of his first child?
Jemele Hill (3:12 PM)
Brady has the credentials. He's a three-time champion, a MVP, and he's very polished from media perspective. I think I made the comparison in my column to Matt Leinart, who has been criticized soundly. Also, Tony Romo doesn't have a child, and he's taking a beating over the Jessica Simpson thing. It's about those 'ships.
Dan (San Jose)
You sure spell well for an illiterate. And you're a journalist! Way to overcome adversity, Jamele.
Jemele Hill (3:13 PM)
I am NBC movie of the week material. We all must overcome obstacles in our life.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Have you done the duck pin bowling yet in the G2 lounge?
Jemele Hill (3:14 PM)
I have not. And, I'm very good bowler. I need to get on that.
Godish (Chicago)
Ever since you wrote that article saying that Kobe is better than Michael, I've always thought you were an idiot. You still are.
Jemele Hill (3:14 PM)
At least you're consistent.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
How many times have you eaten at In -n- Out this week? Buzz has let us all down with only one trip.
Jemele Hill (3:15 PM)
I am slacking on that, and I usually don't. The possibility of In N Out burger usually solidifies my West Coast trips. But I did eat at a fairly-known Mexican chain called Fillibertos. Wright Thompson hooked me up with that. It's outstanding.
Jemele Hill (3:16 PM)
Before we go on, I've got to get this off my chest: Why does our Congress give a rat's you-know-what about why Roger Goodell destroyed the Spygate tapes? That is ABSURD.
Zac (MN)
Hey Jemele, si.com just reported that the Lakers got Pau Gasol for Kwame Brown, javaris crittenton and 2 1st round draft picks. How good is this going to make the Lakers once Bynum returns?
Jemele Hill (3:18 PM)
Someone call the police because a robbery just went down. Are you serious? Kudos to the Lakers. Gasol is soft, but he can score and that combo of him and Bynum is going to be nasty. Lakers just went to being one of the three-best teams in the West.
evan (fort lauderdale)
pop tarts or toaster stroudle?
Jemele Hill (3:18 PM)
Pop tarts. Strawberry. No frosting.
Wayde (Washington DC)
Jamele, which trade is worse? Santana or Gasol?
Jemele Hill (3:20 PM)
Fantastic question. I'm going to say Gasol. Minnesota still has a few pieces, and they've got Mourneau (sp?). But look at what this does to Memphis. Besides, even if the Mets cinch the deal with Santana, the way they collapsed before leaves a little doubt about whether Santana truly does put them over the hump. With the Lakers, there is no question how much this improves them.
Your Congressman (DC)
Hmmm. I could explain why I let the economy turn to sludge, or I can take on the NFL. Hmmm.
Jemele Hill (3:22 PM)
A better one: How about tackling the criminally bad education system. Poverty. Steroids makes sense because of the impact that could have on young people. But this? Stupid.
Jemele Hill (3:22 PM)
A better one: How about tackling the criminally bad education system. Poverty. Steroids makes sense because of the impact that could have on young people. But this? Stupid.
Devlin (Minny)
Jemele- Is Skip really as overbearing, loud, and horribly obnoxious as he seems on first take? Also, do you think the Mets will sign Johan in time, less than 2 hours left!
Jemele Hill (3:23 PM)
Skip -- brace yourself -- is a good guy. He's got strong opinions, many of them wrong. But everything he says, he believes. And he's a true professional in his preparation. Skip watches everything.
Jemele Hill (3:24 PM)
Oh, forgot to answer the second part. Yes, I think the Mets get this done. Imagine the psychological damage if they don't.
Armando (chicago)
What are your views on Roger Clemens?
Jemele Hill (3:24 PM)
He's a liar.
Jimmy (Cleveland)
Congress doesn't care. One Eagles fan that happens to work for Congress is trying to make a name for himself.
Zachary (Pittsburgh, PA)
Goodell probably didn't want to hear any more crap. He has had a lot on his plate from Pacman Jones, to the Bengals off the field problems, the poor guy needs a rest. It's like he is trying to fight crime or something.
Jemele Hill (3:25 PM)
Speaking of Pacman Jones, there's a rumor he's at the Super Bowl. If that's true, it automatically makes this the best SB ever.
Kathy(St. Paul, MN)
Accusations between pro athletes and woman come up every year. I've worked around pro and college football players. The press seems to blame the athletes first. Some are guilty some are not. Will the press ever be brave enough to do a story on how these athletes have to deal with gold diggin' woman?
Jemele Hill (3:28 PM)
Unless a woman flat-out admits she's a gold digger, how do you do that story? I agree with you. I don't think the average person understand how ruthless many of them are. Nevertheless, in some situations, both parties are to blame. I don't think it's accurate to consider athletes "prey," just as it isn't entirely accurate to call all the women they deal with gold diggers. Takes two to tango, as they say.
Corey (Philadelphia)
Jamele, is there anything to do in Arizona other than talk about Brady's injury, or lack thier of. It seems like a pretty boring place to be covering a super bowl.
Jemele Hill (3:29 PM)
Quick, somebody get busted soliciting a prostitute! This is why the worst thing that happened was this two-week gap. Too much time to blow stories out of proportion.
Will (ABQ)
What are your thoughts on the impact of Shockey's absence from the Giants? Chadiha seems to be too lenient on Shockey.
Jemele Hill (3:31 PM)
Well, people are speculating that the Giants seem better off without both him and Tiki. I understand the Tiki arguments, although I think it's overlooked that Tiki did the right thing. His heart wasn't in it, so he quit. Better that to happen than him play football with a lack of passion. As for Shockey, I don't think you can cast him as a cancer. Given his skill set, I don't know if you could argue the Giants wouldn't have made it to the SB if he were healthy. Bottom line is, Eli stopped turning over the ball and that's why they're here.
Kyle (ny)
Do you watch Lost?
Jemele Hill (3:33 PM)
I did, but not anymore. The second season just lost me -- no pun intended. I hear the new season is excellent, but I can't get excited about it. It just seems like a dramatic version of Gilligan's Island.
Isiah Thomas (NY)
McHale dumps KG to his old team. West dumps Gasol to his old team. Clearly I'm not the worst GM in the league.
Jemele Hill (3:33 PM)
There is that multi-million sexual harassment suit, however..
Gray (Chicago)
Jemele, as a reported do you realize how ridiculous the Superbowl hype is? I know it is your job, but even you must admit media day is a joke and overanalyzing a game just gets boring.
Jemele Hill (3:35 PM)
The hype is ridiculous. This is the third Super Bowl I've covered and honestly, I don't know how any reporter can do more than three or four. I was talking to Jeff Chadiha last night and he told me this was his 11th! Now, that there is so much money in the Super Bowl, it's become a total spectacle. I'm hoping for a good game because that will be a nice payoff for the last two weeks.
Grant (Alabama)
What do you predict the final score of the superbowl will be?
Jemele Hill (3:36 PM)
Pats 38, Giants 31
carlos (san fran)
so do you suppose that the lakers will run odom as a 3 and gasol at 4 with bynum at 5 when he comes back? whats the most likely line-up for t hem now?
Jemele Hill (3:37 PM)
Fish...Kobe...Odom...Gasol...Bynum. Very nice. Odom just has to hold up his end. He still has far too many nights where he's a non-factor.
Gray (Chicago)
By the way, I still say the Pistons walking off the court in Game 4 of the 1991 NBA East Finals was one of the most classless act in sports history.
Jemele Hill (3:37 PM)
You would. Great moment, if you ask me.
Pete (NY)
When is someone going to do a Riding With Jemele Hill? What car are you rollin' in?
Jemele Hill (3:38 PM)
I'm not that important yet. Maybe I'll just do a Riding With and talk to myself.
EDogII (Bayonne NJ)
Jemele, what do you think of Jason Kidds request for a trade from the Nets. I'm a Nets fan and can understand that at some point you've done all you can for a franchise. I would bid him farewell and thank him for all the good times.
Jemele Hill (3:41 PM)
I think Jason Kidd caught the fever playing for the U.S. team in the summer. He wants to play with other great players. RJ's a talent, but Vince Carter continues to amaze me with his gutlessness. That guy should be a for-sure Hall of Famer, but he refuses to play defense and become a complete player. If I were J Kidd, I'd want out of there, too. Selfishly, because I'm a Pistons fans, I don't want him in Cleveland.
Mike (Cleveland)
Who in sports right now is too good for their team and should quit??
Jemele Hill (3:41 PM)
Anyone who plays for the Knicks.
Matt (Chicago)
I bet Isiah wouldn't do it again if he could go back, he wasn't part of the Dream Team because of that. Micheal is the man!!!
Jemele Hill (3:42 PM)
If given a choice, Isiah would totally do that again.
Chris (Chapel Hill, NC)
Senator Specter made a simple request of the NFL comissioner: "I would appreciate your reply as to the scope of your investigation and your findings on the number of times the Patriots spied and on whom." That seems fair, who was spied on and how many times. Why was this not shared before the tapes were destroyed?
Jemele Hill (3:43 PM)
Maybe it's just me, but I'd much rather see a U.S. Senator concerned with something else. Off the top of my head, I hear there is a pretty big war going on.
Mike (Brooklyn)
"Vince Carter continues to amaze me with his gutlessness" - thank you Jemele for telling it like it is
Corey (Philadelphia)
Jamele, what are the three worst pro franchises in all of sports?
Jemele Hill (3:44 PM)
Lions. Knicks. the NHL.
Dan (Harrisburg, PA)
Love the Pistons too, Jemele! And 91' was a great moment. I also don't want Kidd on the Cavs and hope he goes to Dallas. If they (Pistons) make the finals, who would you like to see them play? Not based on winning alone - but for a good matchup.
Jemele Hill (3:45 PM)
Pistons-Lakers. Only pure basketball fans would enjoy Pistons-Spurs. Pistons-Suns, also would be very entertaining.
turner baldwin (indianola)
will tom brady really be the best quarterback if he wins the super bowl
Jemele Hill (3:46 PM)
I've tried, but I just can't give it to him yet. I'm a huge Joe Montana fan, so this is an argument of pure emotion. By the way, I saw Joe at a party last night and I didn't have to guts to speak to him. Might be my favorite athlete ever.
Jay Feely(FL)
What team would you love to play for, any sport, but it can't be your favorite team?
Jemele Hill (3:47 PM)
Honestly, the Patriots. Would love to play for an organization committed to winning and excellence.
Tommy(TheStatPack)
What happened to all the cool nicknames team's had? No more Showtime Lakers, Bad Boy Pistons, Run TMC or Phi Slama Jama
Jemele Hill (3:47 PM)
Couldn't agree more. We need more nicknames. Run TMC is one of my all-time favorites.
Tyler (Philadelphia)
Jamele, here in Philly we havint won since the 6ers in '83. Youve gotta admit, we are the most tortured city in sports, am I right?
Jemele Hill (3:47 PM)
Cleveland might disagree.
Mike (Boston)
You should have pretended you were a waitress and asked him if you could get him a drink...then you could always say you bought Joe Montana a drink.
Jemele Hill (3:48 PM)
Very clever. I'll try that if I see him again.
Brian PA
Do you think the Giants will run all over the Pats?
Jemele Hill (3:49 PM)
I think they'll gash them some, for sure. The Pats have a bend, don't break defense.
Darell(NJ)
Would you ever consider streaking at the super bowl?
Jemele Hill (3:49 PM)
Only if I were paid enough money to retire.
Barry Melrose (Bristol, CT)
Wait just a Labatt Blue minute, eh? The NHL is a fine league and has made many improvements, doncha know?
jake richardson (iowa`)
Steve Young, or Joe Montana?
Jemele Hill (3:50 PM)
Easy one. Joe.
Pacman (NV)
Having any good parties there???
Jemele Hill (3:51 PM)
Seriously, if I saw Pacman at a party, I wouldn't know whether to run or gawk. What would you guys do?
Tommy(TheStatPack)
I think it's a crime how bad the Miami Heat are. How about the nickname CSI Miami?
Jemele Hill (3:51 PM)
Keep working.
Jimmy (Cleveland)
I know how you feel. I used the urinal next to John Lithgow at Fenway during the ALCS...and I didn't have the guts to speak to him either.
Jemele Hill (3:52 PM)
Kind of not the place, I'd imagine. Although, I once asked Ashley Judd to use her bathroom, and then I told her I loved her movies.
Turner Baldwin (IA)
payton manning or tom brady
Jemele Hill (3:53 PM)
Brady.
Merrick NY
Will the dolphins be good next year?
Jemele Hill (3:53 PM)
Who's the QB? And therein lies your answer.
Brad (New York)
Yea who wouldnt clam up if John Lithgow walked in the room. I mean, he was on 3rd rock from the sun!! Give me a break!
Jemele Hill (3:54 PM)
Clearly you didn't see him in Ricochet.
EDogII (Bayonne NJ)
Kobe seems more likable all of the sudden. He seems more humble...still hungry, but humble. Is it me?
Jemele Hill (3:55 PM)
I agree. Kobe has learned the price of his selfishness. He wants to be great. What's happening with him is exactly what Jordan went through. When he learned to trust his teammates, he came a compete player. Kobe is learning that now, which is why I predict big things for L.A.once Bynum returns.
Jerramy Stevens (Retardville)
I just plowed somebody's car while drunk, will somebody sign me?
Johan (MN)
Most tortured sports cities...Minnisota says hi.
Jemele Hill (3:56 PM)
Yeah, can that city go five minutes without engaging in a crappy trade for their best player?
jake richardson (iowa`)
so can you put eli in the same class as brady and manning now that hes appeared in a superbowl?
Jemele Hill (3:56 PM)
Um, no. Eli has yet to have a great season.
Mike (Cleveland)
Peyton Manning + Tom Brady currently or Dan Marino + Joe Montana in 1987 -- who were the bigger stars?
Jemele Hill (3:57 PM)
You've got to account for the fact that the media spotlight has changed significantly. Brady + Manning wins hands down because Brady has the TMZ factor and none of those guys ever did.
ELO-ORLANDO
Hey Jemele, how was the transition from Orlando to Bristol?
Jemele Hill (3:57 PM)
I didn't transition. I still live in Orlando.
Jack (NB Canada)
Warren Moon was the best QB ever that played in the NFL and CFL.
Jemele Hill (3:58 PM)
Have at him.
Turner Baldwin (IA)
do you think the halftime show of the super bowl will be good
Jemele Hill (3:58 PM)
No. I did hear Alicia Keys is doing the pregame. That should be good.
Bartholomue
Favorite movie?
Jemele Hill (3:59 PM)
Movie (s). Godfather I and II. Dead Poets Society. Imitation of Life. Casablanca. Coming to America.
Sarah (Austin, TX)
Gisele or Bridget?
Jemele Hill (4:00 PM)
Easy. Gisele.
Jemele Hill (4:00 PM)
By the way, since I was a few minutes late, I'll stay a few minutes over.
evan (fort lauderdale)
jamele, favorite pizza place in orlando?
Jemele Hill (4:00 PM)
Anthony's in Thornton Park.
Corey (Philadelphia)
Jemele, what has been your favorite moment in this wonderful week in the desert?
Jemele Hill (4:01 PM)
Seriously, I can't tell you. You all just have to read the party breakdown column I'm doing that will post sometime Sunday. Just know it involves two women and Matthew Berry.
Doug (LA)
So after Belichick ruins Eli on Sunday, what will he do to Cooper to complete the trifecta?
Jemele Hill (4:01 PM)
I don't have a funny response, but the question is funny enough to carry it.
TJ (VA)
Anyone in your mind that should have made the All-Star Team but didn't?
Jemele Hill (4:02 PM)
Baron Davis. Marcus Camby.
Will (ABQ)
Too bad they couldn't snag Sexual Chocolate for the halftime gig.
Jemele Hill (4:02 PM)
You are my favorite poster for that CTA reference.
Jeff(NY)
I think you would be great for the show The Moment of Truth. Have you considered appearing?
Jemele Hill (4:03 PM)
Please. And piss off the few people that like me. I don't think so. I'm convinced someone will get murdered on that show.
Mike (Boston)
Will Omar live through season 5?
Jemele Hill (4:04 PM)
Next favorite subject: The Wire. I was lucky enough to get the first seven episodes from a friend of mine, so I'm dying right now, waiting to see the next fresh episode. To answer your question, I think yes.
ELO-ORLANDO
do you work at the ESPN club or on disney property?
Jemele Hill (4:04 PM)
Neither, I work out of home.
Pacman (NV)
If Paris Hilton Played football would she be a wide receiver??
Jemele Hill (4:05 PM)
This guy has sent me this about 20 times. I figured I'd reward him for the effort.
Prince Akeem (Queens)
...the Giants of New York took on the Packers of Green Bay. And in the end, the Giants triumphed by kicking an oblong ball made of pigskin through a big "H". It was a most ripping victory.
Jemele Hill (4:05 PM)
I will post CTA references all chat long, if possible.
Jeff (Iowa)
Who's kid has the better pro future - Mia Hamm, Matt Leinart or Tom Brady?
Jemele Hill (4:06 PM)
I'm going to go with Mia Hamm. The kid could have the speed and stamina of a soccer player, and the vision of a baseball player. Hall of Famer! Book it!
greg (west roxbury)
mia hamm??? nomar's the father...that kid is gonna be hurt every 30 seconds
Jemele Hill (4:07 PM)
Ooh, didn't think about that.
Brad (Gadsden,Alabama)
Who do you think is the X-factor for both teams?
Jemele Hill (4:08 PM)
Bradshaw for the Giants. Laurence Maroney for the Pats. If NE can run the ball, they'll put the game away.
Derrick
Jessica Alba or Simpson?
Jemele Hill (4:08 PM)
Easy. Alba.
John (Long Island)
Jemele pick one: watch grass grown, paint dry, or the NHL on versus?
Jemele Hill (4:08 PM)
Grass growing is pretty sweet....
Every Team (Western Conference)
Hi Jemele, Doesn't David Stern need to step in at some point and give a competence or Wonderlic test to his league's GMs? Why would a Grizz fan go to a game or buy a t-shirt? How will teams like the Jazz, Warriors and Rockets who may not make the playoffs in the West feel about Jerry West helping the Lakers?
Jay (MS)
Moss has a restraining order requiring that he stay 500 ft. away from Rachelle Washington. If you were the Giants, wouldn't you invite her to be on the sideline during the Super Bowl game?
Jemele Hill (4:09 PM)
Now that's funny.
Will (ABQ)
Just let your Sooouuuul Glowww...
Jemele Hill (4:09 PM)
All day, baby.
evan (fort lauderdale)
do u think that the university of the united states got snubbed in the bcs this year?
Jemele Hill (4:10 PM)
I'm impressed by the sense of humor in this chat. Carry on.
Trevor ((Texas))
What do you think is a good super bowl meal Jemele?
Jemele Hill (4:11 PM)
Who cares about the food? It's all about the beer. But honestly, you can't go wrong with nachos piled high with beef, cheese, green onions, salsas...which reminds me, I think I'm going to In N Out burger soon as I'm done with this chat.
Chad (Savannah, GA)
Tell the truth Skip just takes the opposite position of everbody, right?
Jemele Hill (4:11 PM)
Skip believes everything he says. I know. Scary.
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
Is the Super Bowl, in general, overrated?
Jemele Hill (4:13 PM)
Tough question. The parties are good, but at the end of the day it's like any party -- impossible to have a conversation, waiting in line for a drink, and bumping into people. The games are usually sloppy because the athletes are too jacked up. Kinda torn.
Semmi(Jamaica Estates)
Apparently these are the best women Queens has to offer. Pick one and let's go home.
Brian (San Francisco)
Got to love Cuba Gooding Jr. with a fro in the barber shop in CTA.
Jemele Hill (4:14 PM)
An appearance that often gets overlooked. Though, my favorite scene is when they go to that club and those two girls start rapping. Hysterical. Can't believe Eddie went from that to Norbit.
Pierre (Paris)
I think ESPN should start featuring some Page 2 people in their commercials.
Jemele Hill (4:14 PM)
I agree. That'll give me an excuse to get a SAG card.
ELO-ORLANDO
where do you get to watch the SB, since your with ESPN? Do they have a special area for you?
Jemele Hill (4:15 PM)
Most of the ESPN'ers will be somewhere in the press box. I'll be on a plane headed home to O-town. I'm outta here Sunday morning.
Jemele Hill (4:15 PM)
Aight, guys, that's my time. I'm going to In N Out burger.
Buzzmaster (4:16 PM)
Thanks Jemele!
Chad (Savannah, GA)
C'mon Jemele give us the scoop on Buzzmaster. Like height, weight, ect.
Buzzmaster (4:16 PM)
Nice try Chad. Nice try. Remember, I'm always watching.
Mark (NY)
Prop bet: what will be the first animal appearing in a commercial after kickoff.
Brad (Cleveland)
Always watching...or just always typing and clicking?
Flemming (Copenhagen, Denmark)
Buzzmaster is watching everything. Spooky....
Brian (Madison, WI)
That was kind of creepy Chad.
EDogII (Bayonne NJ)
damn you Buzz!
Buzzmaster (4:18 PM)
We've got Marques Colston coming up at 4:45. And then I think Colt Brennan at 5!
EDogII (Bayonne NJ)
Colt Colston...now that's a name
Matt (Grand Rapids)
Buzz is only watching to see if some leaves food unattended.
Joe (PA)
get me to 5pm Buzz and hurry. i want to poke my eyes out
Brian (LA)
Does Chad want to know Buzz's eye color as well?
Buzzmaster (4:19 PM)
And if I enjoy long walks on the beach. The answer? No.
Brian (LA)
If Colt is coming on at 5, does that mean we are going overtime?
Buzzmaster (4:20 PM)
For Colt Brennan, anything.
Ryan (San Diego)
Buzz, you couldnt track down any chargers for me?
Buzzmaster (4:20 PM)
Nope, sorry.
Corey (Philadelphia)
Marques Brennan is better EDogII
Matt (Grand Rapids)
I think when all of this is over Chad wants to get an apartment with you Buzz.
Tom (Chicago)
Just like on the field, the Chargers can't get to the Super Bowl.
Chad (Savannah, GA)
Ok Ok people I have a man crush on Buzz. Ha Ha. I could think of worse to have a man crush on like Golic's crush on Brady Quinn.
Sarah (Austin, TX)
I want In N Out....no fair
Jason (TN)
Wrong chat room for that hehehe!!
Willow (WISC)
Hey Buzz: Do you have a man-crush on Tom Brady?!
Buzzmaster (4:23 PM)
No, but I love him dearly. I'm mad Ines got the proposal to him first.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Buzz, I can't believe you allowed me to sleep in when you had Kelly Pavlik today.
Buzzmaster (4:24 PM)
What am I your mother?
Chad (Savannah, GA)
Buzz has a man crush on Scott Van Pelt.
Buzzmaster (4:24 PM)
Now THAT is definitely true.
EDogII (Bayonne NJ)
I could understand wanting Buzz' job, but he could be hideous and a bad dresser to boot.
Buzzmaster (4:25 PM)
News alert: Marques Colston in 20 minutes. Repeat, Marques Colston in 20 minutes.
Brian (San Francisco)
Sweet! That was my first comment to get on a chat. Tell Jemele thanks.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
You could have announced it yesterday!
Buzzmaster (4:26 PM)
I say again...what am I, your mother?
Matt (Grand Rapids)
Breaking News: Buzz was photographed eating a toaster strudel this morning and was traded to MSNBC for a chat host to be named later.
Buzzmaster (4:27 PM)
Check your sources, Matt. That is not true. They couldn't even drag me away from this chat if I were dead.
Brian (Madison, WI)
Well Buzz you do have a lot of motherly tendencies.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
So how do you intend to entertain us until Colston arrives Buzz?
Buzzmaster (4:27 PM)
I'm dancing a jig right now. Are you entertained?
Tom (Chicago)
So Buzz isn't human. Interesting.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
No...you could be my alarm clock though.
Kevin (Dallas)
Poptart lover, dirty tyrant, fish owner & now Josh's mother. A man of many hats.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Not entertained. Still no webcam. You have to work on the powers that be to add webcam to the chats.
swish (detroit rock city)
Buzz...I'd just like to say I'm jealous of you.
Batch (Boston)
So what happens when Johan doesn't sign!
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Which happens first: Buzz eats his 2nd In N Out burger or Santana signs with the Mets?
Brian (Madison, WI)
Buzz is not a circus monkey, he is not here to entertain you.
Devlin (Minny)
Buzz- The BEST moment of the SB will be seeing Kevin Everett being the special guess of the commish, for a league known for its steroids, shootings, and thugs, its great to see this young man come abck!
Brian (LA)
What is Buzz, a clown? Is he supposed to make you laugh?
Corey (Philadelphia)
Congrats to Buzz for winning Wing Bowl 16!
Chad (Savannah, GA)
Long pause ='s Buzz eating a burger. It takes that long just to get one bite in of a double double.
Buzzmaster (4:32 PM)
No, just had to take a call.
Buzzmaster (4:32 PM)
Marques in 15 minutes!
Corey (Philadelphia)
Joey Chesnutt is ridicouls: 241 wings in the final round, to go along with 204 and 102 in the first 2 rounds.
Buzzmaster (4:32 PM)
I think I just threw up a little bit.
ELO-ORLANDO
Hey everyone, I'm going home. Enjoy the SB. Buzz, outstanding job on the chats this week, throughly enjoyed them all. THANKS
Buzzmaster (4:33 PM)
Phew. I'm glad. Sometimes I never know if you guys enjoy this stuff or not.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Running out of gas there Buzz?
Buzzmaster (4:33 PM)
Only a little bit. But we're going to finish strong. Stay focused men (and women) of SportsNation!
Chad (Savannah, GA)
I couldn't eat that many wings in a year.
Kevin (Dallas)
Buzz, someone took the last poptart from the vending machine. Are chocolate zingers allowed?
Buzzmaster (4:34 PM)
I'd say only if you're completely starving.
Corey (Philadelphia)
Buzz, we have to get you out to Philly for the Wing Bowl, nothing better than camping out at 4 A.M. with drunken Philadelphians.
Buzzmaster (4:34 PM)
People camp out to eat wings? Sounds like my kind of people.
Michael(NY)
Buzz, we love what you have done, just don't get any ideas like you did with Chad.
Bob(Lowell)
Has anyone seen my calls. I think someone took one.
Buzzmaster (4:35 PM)
10 minutes before Marques! 10 minutes....9:59...9:58....9:57....9:56.....God I miss 24.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Buzz, you did us proud with the chats. It made up for the disappointment you gave us with your eating habits for the week. You definitely brought your A-game for chats over the past two weeks.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Down your favorite energy drink or pop for the finish!
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Groundhog Day party in 90 minutes. 90 minutes! (and yes, I know that the actual Groundhog Day is not until tomorrow).
Matt (Grand Rapids)
I have trouble staying focused. That's why I'm here.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
So do I Buzz, so do I. It actually occupies my status on Facebook.
Wayde (Washington DC)
Johan will sign. If Pedro with a torn rotator cuff gets 4 years then Santana at a significantly younger age with far fewer innings pitched gets 6.
Matt (Grand Rapids)
Buzz gets 2 thumbs up and a gold star for his efforts this week.
Buzzmaster (4:36 PM)
I like posting praise. Even if it is hollow and filled with sarcasm.
Tom (Chicago)
Buzz, your next trip should be to settle the writer's strike. 24 should have started last weekend with 2 nights of 2 episodes.
Brian (Madison, WI)
Man I had 26 wings during the last Packer game and thought I was going to puke. But that might have something to do with the 26 beers I had with them.
jboogy007 ((pasadena ca))
am tired of this old guys in congress trying to make a name for them self's don't they have something better to do
Buzzmaster (4:38 PM)
The steroids I can see. The NFL thing I think it pushing it. Like the Stews said on 1st and 10 this morning - "bunch of jock sniffers."
Matt (Grand Rapids)
Congress is tackling the hard issues. My cousin lost his job because of Spygate. It is ripping this country apart!
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Six minutes until Colston. Six minutes! (Thought I'd lend a hand Buzz).
Buzzmaster (4:43 PM)
Thanks for the help. Sorry, had to run over and meet Jared and his peeps!
Colby (NY)
Honestly Buzz, the chats have been a great success. Mazel Tov and Thanks.
Chad (Savannah, GA)
Speaking of politics my wife and I have made our contigincy plans that if Hillary wins the Presidency we move back to Europe.
Buzzmaster (4:43 PM)
OK, I think we slipped into too much political talk here.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Uh oh, Buzz checked out on us again. Chad must have found him.
Tom (Chicago)
Sypgate is ripping apart the moral fiber of this country. Won't somebody think about the children?
Tom (Chicago)
Jared has peeps?
Buzzmaster (4:44 PM)
You'd be surprised.
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
That chat with Jared was sweet . . .despite his celbrity status, he still seems humble
Buzzmaster (4:44 PM)
Cool guy for sure.
Chad (Savannah, GA)
J.B. I am not RGR and I am not in AZ.
Julio: (Newark, New Jersey)
I finally have the feeling today that our Giants will take this game! The Giants rush game aka hit and run will expose the patsies!
Tom (Chicago)
I think I'm moving to Canada when I graduate. They only have six days a week and it's clean there.
Ryan (San Diego)
When can we get Jared from the galleria of jewelry on? He's a real up and comer
Buzzmaster (4:45 PM)
I think there would be too much security involved with that, given my record.
Buzzmaster (4:46 PM)
We should be hearing from Marques any minute!
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Are you taking advance questions for Marques?
Buzzmaster (4:47 PM)
Of course. We always do.
Kevin (Dallas)
Anyone get the feeling that we've been talking to Buzzmaster this whole time & these other people are just his split personalities?
Buzzmaster (4:47 PM)
You may just never know the answer to that.
Kevin (Dallas)
Free healthcare too Tom.
Matt (Grand Rapids)
How do we know you are real and not just one of those personalities Kevin?
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
See ya Buzz, the weekend is starting in ten mins for me.
Buzzmaster (4:49 PM)
Later dude.
Chad (Savannah, GA)
And the Canadian dollar is not that bad vs the US dollar right now.
Buzzmaster (4:51 PM)
OK. Marques is running late. Let's start the countdown again. 10 minutes until Marques! 10 minutes!
Brian (Madison, WI)
I think the clock at work has stopped.....this is not cool.
Tom (Chicago)
A big issue is that in Quebec they put mayonnaise on their burgers. I know it's to keep the bun from getting soggy, but it's still wrong.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Only 70 minutes to the Groundhog Day Party. Just 70 minutes! (Thought I'd take everyone's mind off of the fact that Marques is running late.)
James (Pittsburgh, Pa)
I think Spygate needs to be investigated. Something's not right and for the most part everyone at ESPN has been giving the Pats a free pass. Obviously they didn't need to videotape but they did.
Kevin (Dallas)
Well, I do like zubaz pants also, so you may be on to something Matt.
Josh's Mom (Lincoln, NE)
Don't forget to set your alarm Josh.
Bri (NYC)
the clock seems to be going too fast here in New York
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
Buzz, I just sent in quite a few questions for Marques. Will those be saved for him?!
Buzzmaster (4:53 PM)
Yes. And then when the chat is over, I'll get lambasted for only using your questions.
Chad (Savannah, GA)
6 minutes until the Santana deadline and still No Deal!
Kevin (Dallas)
They should do that for 24 one time. "Sorry Jack, the bomb's not going off until next week. 168:00:00"
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Well, I'll miss Marques and won't see his answers to my questions so in case you were going to use any of them Buzz, you can bump me for someone else.
Buzzmaster (4:55 PM)
That's why God invented transcripts.
Tom (Chicago)
I don't know if I can make it another half hour Buzz, I'm starving!
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Good point. I can always read it after the Groundhog Day party. That's why you are the Buzz and I am merely a meek member of the Nation.
George Brett
I invented transcripts Buzz, so you are right.
God (Up)
I pity the foo who don't read transcripts!
Buzzmaster (5:03 PM)
I just ran in to the media room and bumped into Paul Rodgers, Adam Duritz and The Heartbreakers. No sign of Tom Petty though. BTW, has anyone ever pointed out how much Paul Rodgers looks like Chuck Norris? Spooky.
Buzzmaster (5:04 PM)
Hang on folks. We're getting Marques.
Buzzmaster (5:05 PM)
Change of plans! We have Colt!
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
As a player, Colt, what are your biggest strengths?
Colt Brennan (5:06 PM)
I think my strengths is I have a natural ability to throw the ball. I have a lot of fun with the game.
Brad (Gadsden,Alabama))
Colt, Who is your fav. nfl player and team?
Colt Brennan (5:07 PM)
Growing up as a kid, the QB that I really enjoyed the most was Brett Favre. I enjoyed watching him play. As for a team, I grew up in California as a Raider fan and Rams fan but they both left.
EDogII (Bayonne NJ)
What QB(s) did you look up to growing up?
Colt Brennan (5:08 PM)
Brett Favre and John Elway were the two that I enjoyed the most growing up. I really really started to like Tom Brady. Carson Palmer was a guy I liked in high school and college. He's one of the most physically gifted QBs in the league.
Jake (NY)
Well Colt let get down to business. Who Ya Got?
Colt Brennan (5:09 PM)
I really want to see the Pats do what no team has done before - go 19-0. I really want to see them make history. I like what Tom Brady has done as a QB.
Briks, Philly
What would you say to critics who say you are a "system" quarterback?
Colt Brennan (5:10 PM)
I say that we're all system QBs. What me and the offense did in the last three years, no one has ever done in that system. Now, taking that and moving it into a new system and show that I can do it in another system.
Dylan Foster (Oakland, Maine)
Colt, is there any reason you wear the number 15?
Colt Brennan (5:10 PM)
Growing up a wore No. 4 in honor of Favre. When I went to Colorado, I was given 15. I liked having a number a QB has ever had before.
Steiny (NYC)
What NFL QB do you most compare yourself too?
Colt Brennan (5:12 PM)
I don't think there's really a QB I compare me overall to. There are all QBs that I take and apply to my game. For example, Favre, I take his attitude and the enthusiasm for the game. I like Tom Brady. He has a great arm. I'm a guy that really likes to take a little bit from everyone.
Corey (Philadelphia)
Colt, what was the hardest defense you faced in your college career?
Colt Brennan (5:12 PM)
I think that's an easy one, Georgia this past Sugar Bowl. What they did to us and the talent on that defense.
Trevor ((Texas))
What is up with the hawaii dance before the game that you guys do in Honolulu?
Colt Brennan (5:13 PM)
That was something that the Polynesian culture brought to our football team. That dance was made famous by the rugby team. They would do these dances in the South Pacific a long time ago to intimidate the other warriors. It is something that really united the team and island.
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
What did you like best about college?
Colt Brennan (5:14 PM)
The uniqueness of it. It was different from what a lot of kids experience. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Jason (TN)
How hard was it to learn June Jones offense??
Colt Brennan (5:15 PM)
It's not a difficult offense to learn, but it takes time to get good at. He starts the offense out very basic and puts in about 15-20 plays. As you progress in the system, those 15-20 plays turn into different versions. It's not difficult to learn, but to get good at, it takes time.
Rey (Minnesota)
What do you think of June Jones leaving Hawaii???
Colt Brennan (5:16 PM)
I was not surprised. After everything that he's accomplished at Hawaii, take a team to the Sugar Bowl and then the next week still waiting for his contract to be renewed, I think he thought it was time to move on. It was sad to see the era come to an end.
Snowy (Oakland, Maine)
Colt congrats on the season and all the records you set I enjoyed all the games that were broadcasted on ESPN and look forward to seeing you in the NFL, what are you looking forward to most about going into the NFL and which team would you like to go to?
Colt Brennan (5:17 PM)
For me, I think it's a new challenge that I'm really excited to take on. Secondly to prove all the doubters wrong out there. I played in the system. It would be really fitting for me to go to the next level to have success and prove what I did in college.
Sarah (Austin, TX)
What was your favorite moment in your college career?
Colt Brennan (5:18 PM)
I think my favorite moment would be ending the regular season 12-0. Coming from behind against Washington was one of the most gratifying feelings.
Corey (Philadelphia)
Colt, what are you looking forward to more: Draft day hearing your name, or the day after knowing that this whole draft thing worked out, and starting a new chapter in your football career?
Colt Brennan (5:19 PM)
I would say the day after. I'm a firm believer in watching guys like Brady, Welker and so many others, it's not where you're drafted but what you do the day after. That's what I'm looking forward to.
Dylan Foster (Oakland, Maine)
whats the best advice given to you regarding playing quarterback?
Colt Brennan (5:19 PM)
The best advice given to me was from Matt Leinart. He said it will never be about big you are, how strong, how long you can throw, the guy who succeeds at QB is the guy who makes the best decisions on the field.
Colt Brennan (5:20 PM)
Thanks a lot for taking the time. I appreciate all the support. I'm looking forward to the draft process and taking that next step.
Buzzmaster (5:20 PM)
Thanks Colt!
Buzzmaster (5:23 PM)
Next up, we have a late addition to the schedule. We'll have Ricky Hundley coming on to chat. He's a former coach with the Bengals. He will be giving the eulogy at Larry Smith's funeral on Monday.
Chiga(China)
you great, tank you Colt
Buzzmaster (5:25 PM)
Just saw Sean and Christian from Nip/Tuck .. they were both wearing sunglasses indoors. They're cool.
Sean and Christian (AZ)
We are a lot cooler than you
Buzzmaster (5:29 PM)
We've got Ricky Hundley coming up in a couple of minutes. He's also been talking to Mark Cuban about that new league Cuban wants to start up - the UFL.
Buzzmaster (5:29 PM)
Get those questions in!
jason (nebraska)
whats the ufl
Buzzmaster (5:30 PM)
It's a new football league that Mark Cuban wants to start.
Buzzmaster (5:31 PM)
We're getting Ricky Hundley!
Buzzmaster (5:32 PM)
Let's get started!
John Kenney
Coach, which NFL linebacker do you think would make the best coach?
Ricky Hundley (5:33 PM)
I think that Tedy Bruschi would make an outstanding coach. He's gone through some adversity with some health. He's played in 4 SBs. He's an exceptional role models for kids. He comes through a great coaching tree over the years. He would be the first guy that comes to mind.
Jeff (Inglewood, Ca.)
So who is gonna win this Super Bowl that the Dallas Cowboys should be playing in?
Ricky Hundley (5:34 PM)
I think the Cowboys certainly had the pieces. They had an OL led by some great players. They had a defense that turned the ball over and gave the ball back to the offense. At the beginning of hte year, the Boys were a team that I thought would make a run for it.
Buzzmaster (5:37 PM)
Coach, what did Larry Smith mean to you?
Ricky Hundley (5:37 PM)
The thing that most people don't realize about a guy like Larry Smith who came from underneath the Bo tree, they really stressed the fundamentals. He was soft, compassionate guy. He instilled it into all of his players. The dominoe effect that he did with his many many camps and the coaches that have gone out and become coaches and be fathers - he taught us to set goals and have a plan. Those are things that will live on for centuries. A man like Larry Smith taught us to be better men. You could sit back and look at how long this world has gone, and it's been around for light years, if you look at the effect that Larry Smith has done in his 68 years, most people couldn't have achieved that in 10 lifetimes.
Willow (WI)
As a linebackers coach, do you ever work up a sweat?
Ricky Hundley (5:38 PM)
You find yourself physically being involved in the drill work as far as holding dummies, holding slants. You can work up a pretty good work out if you have to push and work that sled around. In the pros you have 5-6-7 guys at most. You can work up a pretty good sweat trying to keep up the tempo. You're running from drill to drill to drill. Those different segments, you have to keep those guys going.
Chiga(China)
Coach, what is your take on patrick willis , of the 49ers
Ricky Hundley (5:39 PM)
I love Patrick Wilis. I love his passion, I love his speed. All his honors and everything are well deserved. He has great talent I think his best days are ahead of him.
Jason (TN)
What peeves you the most about todays players??
Ricky Hundley (5:41 PM)
I think the thing that ticks me off the most is that whe you're out in the real world in life, they have the pro body, but not the pro mentality. You see different situations where guys just don't get it yet. There are guys that would cut off their arm to get the chance they have. I always say, if you don't take care of your body, who will? If you want to be a true professional, you have to take care of it like you're a brain surgeon.
J (East Windsor, CT)
Well, everybody has to say their Super Bowl pick...
Ricky Hundley (5:42 PM)
If I'm a player and I'm on the field and I go through SB week and all I hear about is the presold copies of a Perfect Season, I'm ticked off. If you're a pro, you have to be at your best the whole season. I like the underdog.
Ricky Hundley (5:43 PM)
One thing for sure, football is a game where it will test the limits of your character, your pride, your poise, but you are a product of so many people. I have been so blessed to play football for a guy like Larry Smith. I can't explain how greatful I am. The guy was the absolute best. I just hope that my kids will have a chance to be coached by a coach like Larry Smith.
Buzzmaster (5:43 PM)
Thanks coach!
Buzzmaster (5:44 PM)
We've got a special guest coming up in a few minutes! James Kaminsky, exec editor of Maxim Magazine and formerly of Playboy!
Buzzmaster (5:48 PM)
Hello James!
JD (Boston)
Is he bringing some models, and if so is there a video version of this chat?
James Kaminksy (5:49 PM)
Sadly, I don't travel with models everywhere I go! But I will have them on each arm and surrouding me within the next hour. And you are absloutely right. Why no video chat?
chauncey (teaneck)
how did you get your job in playboy?
James Kaminksy (5:51 PM)
I couldn't find anything else to do so I ended up in magazines. I tried other forms of magazines, including even women's magazines but got bored. I've worked at Men's magazines exclusively for the last decade. I was lucky enough to start working at Maxim in the early days and see it take off the way no other magazine has ever taken off. I went on to work at Playboy and Men's Journal but when they asked me to come back to Maxim that call was something I could not resist.
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
Do you consider your job rewarding?
James Kaminksy (5:52 PM)
If you would call being surrounded by half naked women, working with great writers and meeting celebrities rewarding, then yes, this is a rewarding job.
Paris (LA)
Please get a exclusive interveiw with one of Brit Brit personalities.
James Kaminksy (5:52 PM)
We are talking to Britney's people. We think she is still one of the most compelling celebs in the world. We are making some progress. It is something all large magazines are trying to get. We have some relationships that may very well pay off. She has a fascinating story to tell.
Kevin (Dallas)
Who (besides Buzzmaster) will be at the party tonight?
James Kaminksy (5:54 PM)
We have a long list of people who have RSVP'd. You never know until you are actually sharing a drink with them. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the future Mrs. Tom Brady and all her friends, Brady Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Adam Sandler .. the list goes on. It's an invitation list that was very large and an RSVP list that got even longer. We expect a very busy red carpet.
Brian (LA)
Most beautiful woman ou have encountered in person in your jobs?
James Kaminksy (5:54 PM)
My wife!
jason (nebraska)
there is no night life in the town i live whats one to do
James Kaminksy (5:55 PM)
Yes, leave that town! Come to NY or LA or any number of towns that have great night lives.
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
Patriots or Giants?!
James Kaminksy (5:55 PM)
Giants by 7! My team, the Jets, didn't make it in. New York all the way.
JASON (TN)
Dear sir, Please use less clothes in Maxim Thanks most guys
James Kaminksy (5:56 PM)
The amount of clothes we use is determined by who we shoot .. who the photographer is .. and how willing the girl is to disrobe. The short answer is OK.
Jason (TN)
Do you need a good intern IM cheap!!
James Kaminksy (5:57 PM)
If you live in NY and you are in college, send a resume over.
Buzzmaster (5:57 PM)
Is this your first Super Bowl?
James Kaminsky (5:58 PM)
This is my 7th Super Bowl. I went to 3 in the early days of Maxim and 3 while with Playboy. I also went to a random one before that. This is actually 8. They get better every year.
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
Tell Hef I said hi.
James Kaminsky (5:59 PM)
Hef and I have lost touch. Maybe we will run into each other in a Scottsdale bar in the next few days and we can have a beer. I'll tell him you said HI.
Seth Spokane WA
Tom Brady is the anti-christ
James Kaminsky (6:00 PM)
I'm not a Patriots fan. I think Brady is a fine QB, perhaps vastly overrated. Growing up in NY, I was an enormous fan of the Jets and a fairly big fan of the Giants. If you are a Jets fan you cannot be a Patriots fan. I'm eager to see their demise and hoping it starts Sunday.
Buzzmaster (6:01 PM)
What is the competition like to have the best party?
James Kaminsky (6:02 PM)
It is fierce. It is like staging a war. The whole idea of Maxim having it's party on Friday is that we get off the first salvo in that war. Most of the parties from the other magazines are Saturday night. This allows us to set the bar for the entire weekend and to be the party people talk about until kickoff and long after. We become the biggest party because we work hard at making it sexy and fun and cool.
Kevin (Dallas)
Who approaches the women to do the shoots? Or does someone approach their agent? I gotta imagine that'd be a subject one brings up delicately.
James Kaminsky (6:03 PM)
It starts with publicists usually. It is a highly coordinated approach. Sometimes it involves the movie studios or record labels and sometimes it involves managers and agents in addition to PR. It is highly complicated. Sometimes it can just be running into someone at a party.
Buzzmaster (6:03 PM)
Any big folks coming up in the mag?
James Kaminsky (6:04 PM)
We can't really talk about the people we have in future issues because that is a highly guarded PR secret! But our next issue is Avril Lavigne who looks spectacular. As you have never seen her.
Zach (Hartford, WI)
What is an average workday like?
James Kaminsky (6:05 PM)
Get in around noon, drink coffee for 2 hours, make jokes for half an hour, go to lunch, and work well into the night. Repeat 7 days a week.
Jordan (WI)
I understand the Lambeau Field Bikini Girls will appear in an upcoming issue?
James Kaminsky (6:05 PM)
I can neither confirm nor deny!
jason (nebraska)
is it mweird for a person to go to a nightspot by themself
James Kaminsky (6:06 PM)
No. As long as you have self confidence. Remember that line from American Gigilo. You have to own the place and know the bar is a better place with you in. You will never need a freind. You will make friends.
Jason (San Francisco, CA)
Go Patriots... What is the probability of the Patriots winning the game, James?
James Kaminsky (6:07 PM)
Anything can happen. I have a really good feeling about the Giants. If they get crushed, I will go home with my tail between my legs but the world will go on.
James Kaminsky (6:08 PM)
Thanks for the questions! Please check out Maxim Magazine. Email us any feedback good or bad. We can take it. We're big boys for the most part. The mag is for you guys. Thanks.
Buzzmaster (6:08 PM)
Thanks, James!
Buzzmaster (6:11 PM)
That was a cool, unplanned guest.
J (East Windsor, CT)
Maxim is awesome
Kevin (Dallas)
Gotta head home Buzz, thanks for the chats this (very slow work) week.
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
Why is the Super Bowl on a Sunday. Isn't Saturady a more conveinent day for most of us?
Buzzmaster (6:12 PM)
Before we shut this thing down, let's take another walk around the media center and look for anyone who would be cool to chat with. Hang on a minute, I'll be right back.
Buzzmaster (6:14 PM)
OK. Well, I didn't see anyone. I think that about wraps it up from SB XLII for this week. I hope you all enjoyed the week's worth of chats!
Buzzmaster (6:14 PM)
Thanks for stopping by all week!
