Amy Nelson (9:09 AM)
Hi everyone. We'll be starting the chat in about an hour ... of course we'll be talking about Johan Santana but also Super Bowl talk, Eli being calm, cool and collected at media day, Tom Brady and the endless talk of his personal life and there's always Terrell Owens' talk ... please send in your comments, questions and anything for me, and also Skip Bayless and Jemele Hill.
Amy Nelson (9:58 AM)
Ok guys let's get started. Lots to talk about today...
Kelsea (Boston, MA)
The twins definitely made the wrong decision with Johan. These may have been four of the Mets top seven prospects, but that doesn't mean that they're quality. It just means New York has a shallow farm system. I think the Red Sox's packages were the best as they'd be getting a number of MLB ready players and/or a lefty with terrific potential. Even the Yankee's package was better with Hughes. Mets were very lucky to get this without giving up anything. I just wonder though if they'll be able to sign Santana and not put the rest of their payroll in jeopardy.
Amy Nelson (9:59 AM)
No question this is a great deal for the Mets. Even if two of those guys become superstars, the Mets needed to do something, and they got a great pitcher.
Will, Trumbull CT
With the more than likely aquiring of johan santana. Are they now the top pick to win the NL pennant? SKIP IS THE MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amy Nelson (10:02 AM)
I think you have to say that. As long as Pedro can be a solid starter, and with that lineup, they have to be considered one of the best, if not the best,
Seth (Michigan)
I couldn't agree more Amy! The mets made a great deal!
Jeff (Michigan)
If you do a trade without super prospect Fernando Martinez, I don't see why you bother to make that trade. The Red Sox and Yankees had better trade offers, but the Twins took too long. Nice move by the Mets, if there isn't anything wrong.
Amy Nelson (10:04 AM)
That's the question, Jeff. As has been mentioned by Buster Olney and others, his ERA was in the mid-5s down the stretch, but if Pedro passed a physical i don't expect one for Johan should be a problem. WHether something is truly wrong, we might not know for a while.
Brian, Canton MI
The Mets got Santana, big deal. The Tigers are still the runaway favorites to win the World Series.
Anthony,Newark,DE
i hope Johan will be just as big of a bust as Freddy Garcia was for my NL EAST CHAMPS
Amy Nelson (10:05 AM)
Anthony, Are you SERIOUS with that comment???? Please tell me you're joking. Comparing Freddy Garcia to Santana???!!!
John (Detroit)
I just like the fact that Santana went to the NL and not to either the Chokees or Red Sux.
Andrew (Portland, ME)
If I was a Twins fan I would be so upset with this deal. One expert compared it to Deal or No Deal. Twins had the 1,000,000 dollar case 750,000 dollar case last month and ended up having to except a much smaller deal.
Jeff (Ashland, OH)
The Twins knew that if they traded Santana within the AL, that would be one less playoff spot for them as either Boston or NY would be almost assured of the wild card with Santana. Smart move to trade him to the NL even if they didn't get much for him.
Tom (Boston,MA)
They may just be the favorite in the NL but the NL is so inferior to the AL that it doesn't even matter.
Seth (Michigan)
I think the tigers are the best Amy! Look at the tigers line up!!! A hall of famer is going to be our number 9 hitter!!! We also have great starting pitching!
Jeff (Michigan)
It's amazing how the Mets pitching staff went from ok to great in one night. One pitcher can't fix all of their problems!
Amy Nelson (10:07 AM)
Ok, Jeff, you're right. But let's look at this, the Mets still have a great lineup (easy Detroit fans, we're talking NL here) and some very solid, young pitchers. We weren't talking about one of the worst teams in the league going to one of the best.
matt (florida)
The mets are reaching. Santana is 29 years old and pitched in a pictchers dome for his career. What's more, he is paired with Pedro and El Duque, a couple of over the hill guys that can't eat innings like they used to. Plus, Sanatana isn't lights out against the NL in innerleague play. Another questionable move trying to live up to the Braves. Good Luck.
Amy Nelson (10:08 AM)
Questionable move? Hmmmm, that's hard for me to digest. Are you saying that Santana is washed up?
Anthony,Newark,DE
Twins got robbed for Johan.. but hey maybe my phillies can also rob them for joe mauer
William, Navarre,Fl
The Mets still also have the best linup and now and more pitching. Hello World Series!
Jerry (Haslett,Mi )
The Red Sox are still the Best team in Baseball guys. They have the best Rotation, Line-Up and Bullpen.
Michael (Bethel)
Whoever said the Tigers aren't the favorites is really losing it. The Red Sox are a prohibitive favorite to win the World Series. Amy, were you surprised about this Santana deal?
Amy Nelson (10:10 AM)
Michael, Not surprised at all, considering his agents reportedly told the Twins that they trade him by yesterday or he invokes his no-trade for the rest of the season. Surprised about the quality of return? Didn't the T-wolves get eight players for Kevin GArnett? I know you shouldn't compare the two sports, but unless there's something we don't know about Santana's health, then I'd say the Twins surely didn't get as much as they should have.
Tom (Chicago)
The Twins made a mistake trading Santana. Now they have to hope that Liriano comes back and is dominant. That's a lot of pressure on a guy that is coming off of surgery. Looks like the Tigers and Indians will battle it out for the Central.
Amy Nelson (10:10 AM)
A lot of pressure. I think it's one of the most intersting story lines going into spring training. How will Liriano handle it?
Justin (St Paul)
As a Twin's fan I do not have a huge problem with the deal. We were going to lose him anyway (he turned down a 4 year 80 Million extension) so I just assume get him out of the AL all together and move on.
Jerry (Haslett,Mi )
1. Red Sox 2. Indians 3. Angels 4. Tigers 5. Rockies Mets don't even crack the top 5
Gerald Shiflet (Texas)
The Mets are not the team who benefited most from the Santana deal. The winners are by far the Red Sox. The Red Sox were in it just to challenge the Yankees. Since the Yankees and Red Sox are both "Santaless" The Red Sox are sitting fine in the East once again.
Seth (Michigan)
Amy! the tigers are the talk of the MLB!!! The mets will win the NL but they won't have a chance against the Tigers in the world series!
Carl (Texas)
This is what I hate about baseball. The smaller teams never have a shot and trade away talent for almost nothing. There's almost no point into going to Twins games this year.
Amy Nelson (10:11 AM)
Carl, A point that hasn't been made much but it was something I was thinking about this morning ...
Anthony,Newark,DE
lol.. at mets fans saying hello World Series???.. isnt that what they where saying last season?.. and what happend???
Michael (Bethel)
Tigers will win the AL Central, Twins finish 4th
Trey (VA)
Matt from Florida, how can you say he's not lights out in interleague play? 16-4, 182 IP, 2.27 ERA, 191-46 K-BB ratio. How much more lights out do you want?
Jeff (Michigan)
All I am trying to say is while it's a great move, it still hasn't fixed their pitching problem entirely. It just patched a small leak, while there are other leaks. By the way, the Red Sox are still the favorites, so let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Amy Nelson (10:13 AM)
Ok guys we're still going to talk baseball but I'm also giong to throw out some football stuff too...
Amy Nelson (10:13 AM)
Btw, spoke to a baseball source this morning who told me Santana hasn't been to the Twins complex in a week and a half. But as of yet, I haven't found anyone who's told me where he is exactly/
Jerry (Haslett, Michigan)
Now I am a Tigers fan but the Tigers have NO BULLPEN!!!! Zumaya is out for half the season and Todd Jones is still the closer the last time I checked. The Indians will win the Central because they have a better rotation and bullpen.
Mike, Tampa,FL
Please talk about Tom Brady's ankle today. How he's doing, whats going through his mind, will it affect his play. I haven't heard you guys talk about that all this week.
Michael (Bethel)
Amy, how about that reporter that asked Brady 'Marry Me?' Your reaction to that?
Amy Nelson (10:14 AM)
I thought it was funny but i'm seriously SO sick of hearing about it. Enough.
Anthony,Newark,DE
twins will lose all there talent they are the marlins of the al.. look for them to deal Justin and Mauer and even Liriano when it comes time for them to get extensions
Seth (Michigan)
Mike from tampa, No one cares about his ankle! He is fine!
Bob (Southington, CT)
As a Red Sox fan, I would personally like to thank the Twins not only for not trading Santana to the Yankees, but sending him to the National League. Thank you!
Michael (Bethel)
I'm gonna make a bold prediction. If the Giants win the Super Bowl, I think Strahan will retire. If the Patriots win, I think Seau will retire
Johannes(Greenville,SC)
Amy, Last time I checked the Rockies and D-Backs were playing for the NL pennant last year, and they have only gotten better. Yes the Mets may be better now with Santana, but he is not his dominant self like he was 3 years ago.
Jeff (Michigan)
Anthony, the Twins also traded for Delmon Young, who is an amazing talent. I don't see how they're becoming the Marlins, because they at least kept Santana for 5-6 years. Marlins just deal them once they become hot.
Dave (New York,NY)
Mets have 5 years max to win a World Series or this trade was bad. Especially with the money they are going to have to pay Santana.
Amy Nelson (10:19 AM)
I'm curious to hear Phillies' fans reaction on this...
Nathan (Duluth, MN)
The twins will never deal Mauer. He is from MN, the fans love him no matter how over-rated he is. He'll be here forever. Unfortunatly
Pete Sampras From Retierment
HA.. I Told U All Last Week Federer Wont Break My Records. He Looked Lost Out There
Michael (Bethel)
Hey Amy, you said Federer would win the Aussie Open right? Well, how did you feel about the Tsonga-Djokovic final?
Amy Nelson (10:21 AM)
Michael, I thought he'd win it, and can you blame me? It was exciting but was hoping to Tsonga would make it more of a match. Would have been fun to see him win, but to me, I love Djokovic because of his impressions ... have you seen them? Youtube it, it's great. He's also exciting to watch. I'm with John McEnroe,. i like seeing more personality and emotion from players...
bradley (atl ga baby)
i know baseball is your calling but, seriously can't i enjoy the last week of football without hearing about baseball?
Amy Nelson (10:22 AM)
Bradley, Mind your business. I can say that since I went to high school with you...
Sal, Johnstown NY
sounds like the Twins over played their hand and had no where to go. Sounds like Boston was only interested in keeping Santana away from NY. When the Yanks dropped out, so did Boston.
Jerry (Haslett, MI)
Just Two years ago the Twins had a strong rotation of Johan, Liriano, Radke and Silva. Too bad that all diminished...
Michael (Bethel)
I think I know the reaction of Phillies' fans, they're saying, 'Bring it on, we won the NL East last year, Santana doesn't scare us'
david (Iowa City,IA)
i think that the mets are going to win the world series
Batch (Boston)
I am a Red Sox fan, but can I just ask why everyone is all bent out of shape because the Mets fans think they are going to win the world series now? They should have hope, and let them be optimistic, they are FANS. I'll never understand why other people get so down on people for being optimisitc about their own team...
Kenny (Texas)
Everyone always says Mets are gonna be in the world series and then they always flop in the playoffs
Dave (New York,NY)
Mets have 5 years max to win a World Series or this trade was bad. Especially with the money they are going to have to pay Santana.
Anthony,Newark,DE
Delmon Young?.. the same "future superstar" who throws bats at umpires?.. why do u think the devil rays gave up on him so fast after calling him up lastyear?.. and the Twins gave up a Very nice young pitcher to get him
Amy Nelson (10:23 AM)
Delmon Young has all the talent in the world to be that superstar, he just needs to learn how to behave, that's part of the reason the Rays traded him. They wanted to try and change the culture there ... his talent isn't what should be questioned.
Max (State College, PA)
The Santana deal happened becasue it had to. Twins had no chance to resign him to the reported 25 million a year asking price. I think the real mistake was for the Sox and Yankees not trying to get him...although it took many prospects to land Santana, why not make the move and be the automatic favorite in the AL? Kudos to the Twins for getting such a great return on a player if they couldnt trade would get nothing for other than supplemental picks in the draft.
Josh (NYC)
I'm sorry, but Carl Pohlad is one of the wealthiest men alive, he could have easily given Johan what he was worth.
Amy Nelson (10:24 AM)
Josh, whoah that's a whole nother issue, that's been written about. Why would the MN taxpayers be asked to help for the new stadium if he wasn't cheap?
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
The Mets are a very complete team. They have strong hitting (Wright& Beltron, good pitching ala Santana, and a great manager in Randolph. They could easily win the N.L.
Mike (Roseville, CA)
Being that San Francisco is such a laid back sports town and Philly is flat out nuts, how do you think that Pedro Feliz is going to do once the fans realize they are getting a streaky hitter and above average fielder?
Brian (Minneapolis)
The Twins had to get what they could for Santana. NO pitcher is worth 25 million a season when they play once every 5 days. The Twins cannot afford that and I am happy that they did this trade and not pony up the money for him.
Josh (NYC)
If the rumors are true that the NYY turned down Kennedy/Cabrera for Johan -- that's depressing -- Cash has gone too far.
Jason (Massachusetts)
The N.L. is a joke....The Sox just dismantled the HOTTEST team in baseball in a 4 game sweep with the highest of stakes. Sure the Mets have added to their staff, but they are one injury away from being in serious trouble. I'm not sure how much longer Petey will be good to go. You heard it here first....Santana will go down with a season-ender.
Brian (Minneapolis)
The Pohlads are paying for the difference in the land price that they settled on and now the price of the stadium has gone up and they are fronting the difference instead of cutting some things out of the stadium
Amy Nelson (10:29 AM)
brian, Thanks for straightening that out. I was under the impression that the original proposal was for taxpayers to pick up a big chunk of the cost, though...
Max (State College, PA)
Josh...true, I know this situation all too well as I am a Pittsburgh Pirates fan, the owners have boatloads of money, but didnt allow the people running the orgainzation to sign players to such big contracts, could that possibly the problem?
Jason (Massachusetts)
One more thing. When will teams learn not to talk trash and guarantee wins against the Patriots? As soon as I heard Burress guaranteed victory, I knew the Pats would win. I hope Rodney lays him out in the first series.
Anthony,Newark,DE
God can we all please stop talking about what Tom Brady is doing in his personal life?...that should not be a headline heading into the SuperBowl.. the real story is Eli coming of age
Nathan (Duluth, MN)
Saying Pohlad has a boat load of money is an UNDERstatement. Pohlad is the RICHEST owner in baseball and the thrd richest in all of sports.
Brian (Newmarket, NH)
As a Phillies fan I hate the deal. I think if Pedro becomes a solid number 3 and Maine steps in as the two that is a scary rotation with Perez and El Duque finishing it off. In some respects this is the Mets organization trying to fix what they did in trading away Kazmir.
Bill kansas city,mo
Way too much baseball talk during SB week. Lets talk football and put baseball on the back burner.
Amy Nelson (10:34 AM)
Ok Bill, then bring something smart and interesting to talk about. People aren't OD'd on super bowl talk? I'm biased, of course, since I cover baseball ...
Eric (Texas)
It is too early to tell how the Santana deal will unfold. The Mets will spend a lot of money on a player that could end up injured, you just never know. Baseball needs to fix it's problems, teams should not be forced to dump all-stars because they cannot afford them. You do not hear about this in other sports.
Lee (Gloucester,va)
I just want to know how skip can compare the move of the phillies signing lidge to the mets getting santana. The mets only lost by 1 game.He cant tell me the mets santana doesnt give u one more game?
Amy Nelson (10:35 AM)
Yeah, not a good comparasion...
Craig (Ohio)
I think MLB has run its course! I think wathching AAA or even AA is more exiting to watch, has more integrity, and is worht the price of admission. Why do you think the NFL is #1.
Amy Nelson (10:35 AM)
You think minor leaguers aren't on steroids and don't cheat too? Why does it necessarily have more integrity?
Kenny waco, Tx
im tired of hearing of Eli coming of age. hes donig a wonderful impersination of Trent Dilfer when he won a super bowl in Baltimore
Shelly (Madison, WI)
Amy, do you think the Milwaukee Brewers will be contenders or pretenders in the N.L.?
Amy Nelson (10:37 AM)
Shelly, Being in that clubhouse when they were eliminated from making the playoffs, i felt that team would come back with authority. Now, that takes talent and the right pieces. Don't think they'll be a pretender at all, though I do worry about Yost as manager. It seems as though he can split opinion in the clubhouse, some guys love playing for him, others dont' at all..
Steve (Cleveland)
In this mornings Plain Dealer, their is an article about Lebron James requesting The Cavs to find a way to aquire Jason Kidd. Your thoughts?
Amy Nelson (10:37 AM)
Think that would be awesome, and so much fun to watch. You?
Nice Guy Chad (NGC)
So...when do MN sports fans expect Adrien Peterson to be traded, or just given away; 2marrow? i.e. K.G.& Mr. Santana?
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
All season long, the Giants have been proving us wrong. They've pulled 3 straight upsets and almost beat the Pats week 17. They have a legit shot to win the game!
Jerry (Haslett, MI)
You don't think Football Players take steroids Craig?
Aaron (Springfield MO)
Is saying "we will win" talking trash? Or just believing in your team? Pats fans are right up there with Yankee fans. Anyways, your right I hope Harrison lays out Burress and gets ejected for Helmet to Helmet. Harrison is a bum and a cheap shot artist.
Jeff (Michigan)
If I remember correctly, the MLB suspended more players in the minors for steroids than in the majors.
Amy Nelson (10:38 AM)
Jeff, And then some ... but that's a whole nother can of worms ...dont' forget there are far more players inthe minors too, so the numbers are going to be skewed
Joe (pittsburg)
Probally more use in minor's just to get to major's
Rick (Wells, ME)
You guys just did another story on "The Book". Do you realize there's a book for pre-order on Amazon about the Giants 2008 SB victory?
Amy Nelson (10:39 AM)
Nope didn't know that...
Shelly (Madison, WI)
Amy, Ned Yost is a great manager I don't think he's going anywhere until the Brewers are the worst team in the N.L.
Amy Nelson (10:40 AM)
Shelly, I'm just teling you what some players have told me ...
Jose Cruz (Tampa,fl)
I, just can't understand why the yankees did not make a deal for santana. do they honestly beleive that chin men is going to improve from last years post season performance?
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
The problem with Yost is that he'll pull a starting pitcher because they've pitched 6-7 innings, even though they've shown no signs of fatigue. Also, he'll wait too long to pull a struggling reliever.
The Wire (HBO)
Amy why no talk of me today??
Amy Nelson (10:41 AM)
The Wire, I love you and always have room for you in a chat ... though I don't want to spoil it since I've already watched Sunday's episode. I have to admit, nothing will top season 4, for me...
Kevin (Arlington, VA)
I love this deal as a Mets fan (if we can sign him of course). We picked up the best pitcher in baseball, and maintained our young nucleus of Reyes and Wright. You can't overstate the fact that aquiring an ace at #1 moves every other starter down a notch. Should be a fun season!
Chris (Denver, Colorado)
I dont think the Cavs necessarily need kid....i actually agree with skip....Gooden, Ilgauskas, and Varejao are a great core and i dont think want to trade one or even two or three to get kid do you?
Aaron (Lincoln, Maine)
The American Hockey League is the only minor league sport that is better to watch than its professional affiliate.
Ken(Green Bay)
I think the Cubs are favored to win the NL. They added Kosoke Fukudome and returned almost all of their starting roster and supporting cast from the team that came back and won the Central last year. Let's not forget, this is the 100th anniversary.
Brett (Charlotte, NC)
The Cubs are approaching the century mark anniversary since their last win of a World Series this year. Do they have what it takes considering the dominance of the AL in the past decade as well as a newly competitive NL with the likes of the Mets threatening for the World Series since picking up Johan Santana?
Amy Nelson (10:42 AM)
Right, and if they get Brian Roberts they'll be looking even better. I still don't give them the edge, though.
jeremy(ohio)
I am tired of hearing about kidd and him wanting traded. trade him or cut him and get it over with
Tom (Boston,MA)
too much baseball and you're not helping things so Im out of here
Amy Nelson (10:43 AM)
Someone from Boston doesn't want to talk baseball???? WOW, a new mark has just been set.
Dan (Buffalo,NY)
You cant judge Wang on last year PS starts because he was hurt most of the year with a broken nail which is hell on a sinker ball pitcher and before last year he had 2 good PS starts
Amy Nelson (10:43 AM)
You know a lot of players wil fingernail problems get manicures? They go to great lengths to buff their nails ... Pedro Feliciano broke it down to me one day...
Kenny (Tx)
The cubs still need to add a couple more starting pitchers before their up there with the top nl teams
bertram heath (Miami,fl.)
Why cant the Giants get more respecrtthen there getting. If they get the lead and keep playing football they can win.
Amy Nelson (10:44 AM)
What about the Patriots being 7-point favorties if Brady doesn't play??
Richard (Nebraska)
I still beleive the teams to be in NL are going to be the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Atlanta Braves. Both with great pitching and young hitting.
Max (State College, PA)
I wish Burress was still on the Steelers as I am a huge Steeler fan, I hope he is somehow able to run through the defense of NE like he did GB...although I also would like to wake up in the morning and see a million dollars laying next to me on the floor...sadly, I think that could have a better chance of happening.
Jarred (Atlanta)
It's not so much of Eli's "coming of age", it's more of Eli finally doing what was expected of him. He's surrounded by some great playmakers, its only right that reaches the bar that was set for him.
Jimpirone Marian (Pennsylvania)
Aaron, it's not just Harrison who's cheap; it's most of their team. Their cheating coach teaches them that way. The claim about Richard Seymour is probably true. If you watch the games - you always see his shoes stomping in the middle of piles. Just another cheap-shot artist.
Darin (Minnesota)
Leave it to the Minnesota Twins to do one of the biggest bone head trades of all time, now that the Polads have there new stadium, their (Polads) are doing just what they said they woudn't do, If Minnesota gives us (Polads) the stadium I will field a good team, I've never seen a greedier management. we just as well have kept Yohan, and let him go after next year, WE GOT NOTHING!
Justin (St Paul)
I agree, Baseball has become a joke. All the "small market" teams are just a feeding system to the NY,Bos,Det,etc... It is all the Unions falt for persuading players to always take more money to keep driving the market up.
Bob california
cavs could beat celtics 9 times out of ten with jason kidd
Amy Nelson (10:46 AM)
Bob, wow bold statement, no?
Bill (WI)
Another sad day for Major League baseball. Small markets lose again. Until Baseball get to be more like the NFL it will be a second tier sport to most of America. Young fans today are focused on the NFL because markets like Green Bay can compete at the highest level. The Twin Cities is 10 times as big as Green Bay but they act like a minor league for the so called elite teams. I am aloyal Twins fan, but I am also one that grew up with them from the beginning. I do not think I would be this loyal if I was a young person today.
Amy Nelson (10:47 AM)
Bill, Great point...
Aaron (Lincoln, Maine)
Seven-point favorites if Brady doesn't play. I think that's what Buress was trying to get at when he predicted the score. Except he miscalculated.
Ian (Milwaukee)
Why does everyone make such a big deal over a player coming out and saying they're going to win, or they think they'll win? In competitive sports you absolutely have to think you can or will win in order to even stand a chance. Would you rather have players, on the Giants for example, saying "The Patriots are better than us and we don't stand a chance, we're definitely going to lose?"
Tom (East Texas)
Eli is a joke. He has played decent over the last few weeks, but if he is consistent about anything, it is being inconsistent. It just so happens that the roller coaster called Eli has been on an upswing at just the right time. He's still garbage for a QB and will be thoroughly schooled by Senior Brady and his minions.
Rick O'Connell Weymouth, Ma.
I wouldnt go as far as Plaxico to guarantee a win but look at the Patriots record against teams that they have played twice in a season IF they lose the first game they rarely lose the second. At 18-0 Plaxico should be more worried and show more respect to a team that he lost to.
Lee (Farmingon Hills, MI)
Hi Amy, it is so funny that ESPN is running off that the Boston Globe put a book about 19-0 on amazon.com but the Giants also have their own book that they will be superbowl champions. http://www.amazon.com/New-York-Giants-Super-Champions/dp/1596703083/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1201706091&sr=1-2
Josh (NC)
Johan didnt want to be there anymore. You cant say Pohlad is gutting the team. Bill Smith said when he took over he wanted to focus on offense and he did just that buy getting Young and then signing Morneua to a long term deal.
kevin portland me
cavs have a lousy front court so they could not beat the celtics with j kidd. unless of course the referees are biased with LeBron like they were when they played the Laker's on Sunday. Why is it that he gets such bias with the refs?
Tom (East Texas)
Am I the only one that feels strongly that Eli Manning does not belong here? Every time I see him he reminds me a the slow kid that though everything was funny. I dont think he's rising to anything, he will be school by Senior Brady and that Pats arsenal.
Matt ( Elk River, MN )
In the words of a hero of mine Dan Barreiro the Louisiana Purchase pretty much just happened again. Minnesota is where sports players come to become superstars and then leave, or we trade for nothing. This was the worst deal we could take, Bill Smith is a moron.
Amy Nelson (10:51 AM)
Matt, The question is, would you rather have four players now, or two picks for June 09 draft? What is the better return? Because Smith had to trade him if your answer if the former ...i wouldn't call the man a moron. Try being in his position...
Dan (Buffalo,NY)
Eli has had a great postseason and belongs here without a doubt
Max (State College, PA)
Aikman didnt really completly come on until year four...he turned out ok, didn't he? Why is it impossible that this ISNT the coming out of Eli Manning?? For the NFL's sake, I certainly hope it is.
Josh (Asheville, NC)
Amy, I need you to settle a question that is being debated amongst my buddies, their wives, & myself. If you could have only one main food for a Super Bowl party, what would it be? A giant party sub sandwich? Hot wings? Lil' smokies? Pizza? I love some lil' smokies, but I got to go with some hot wings. Hot wings with a cold brew and the Super Bowl, that is life! My wife agrees, but as long as paper plates are used. What are your thoughts, Amy? Thanks.
Amy Nelson (10:53 AM)
Josh, GREAT debate ... hmmmm...I usually eat pretty healthy but as my friend Jer and I were saying last weekend, it just feels right to eat wings and have a beer when watching football. So I'd go with wings...thought I would rather eat a sub since it's healthier...
Josh, Gadsden, AL
hello?
Amy Nelson (10:53 AM)
Hola?
Matt (Elk River, MN)
I can see his position, and I know he had his back against the wall. He had no wriggle room whatsoever, which really sucks to be him. But if you KNOW that you're not going to resign Santana, then why not pony up the cash for Torii Hunter? We just lost the heart, AND the soul in one offseason
Chizzie (Denver, Co.)
I'm sick of baseball owners saying we cant keep this player, or that player. We cant afford him. Well then seell the team. We're going through the same stuff here in Denver, but, we can through with a NL Championship last season
Jeff (Ashland, OH)
Kevin are you kidding me? The Cavs have one of the best frontcourts in the game. Z is a former all-star and is playing like one again. Gooden is a great rebounder though he is prone to bonehead mistakes. Varejao does pretty much everything. And don't forget about the best player in the league, LeBron, who plays PF much of the time with Varejao at center.
Todd, San Diego
This small market stuff is bull. Carl Pohlad has significantly more money that Fred Wilpon and the Steinbrenner's. He just chooses not to spend it. Market has nothing to do with it.
Kenny (Tx)
Eli is getting helped by a great defense and receivers that keep bailing him out
Quan (Idaho)
why is it that papparrazi follows Tony Romo's every step but Tom Brady dated a actress and is now dating a SUPER MODEL and no one cares?
Amy Nelson (10:55 AM)
Quan, no one cares? Ummmmm, did you see all the papps at Gisele's apt in the village last week?
Tom (East Texas)
No way you can compare Eli to Troy Aikman. Eli has had a high caliber offense since he's been here. He just wasnt able to do anything with who he had. When Aikman came out, they went 1-15 his rookie year for a reason, they didnt have anyone!! Eli is inconsistent, and unless he can continue this level hes played at through next year, he still deserves no kudos.
Eli Manning
Im getting really tired of you guys talking all this junk about me. The Manning family is right up there with the Kennedy's and the Bayless's.
Amy Nelson (10:56 AM)
Perhaps the best post since I've been doing this chat...thanks for checking in, Eli.
Josh (NC)
Just like the Timberwolves lost the heart and soul in 1 player. But you have to remember the twins have 9 guys playing at once so 1 or 2 players arent gonna change much.
DIMITRI WASHINGTON DC
WATCH OUT FOR THE NATIONALS...THIS YEAR...WHY NOT US....
Amy Nelson (10:57 AM)
dmitri, Did you forget how to spell your name?
Peyton (Indianapolis)
Sorry bro, you will not be like me and win the big one. Now get off the computer!
Chizzie (Denver, Co. )
Who cares who any athlete is dating? I dont really care if Romo is dating Minnie Mouse. Its his choice
Saintsfan (:))
Chizzie I agree I dont care who he dates or any other athlete for that matter
Jimpirone Marian (Pennsylvania)
Josh - only difference here is that the GM handed the BOSTON Celtics (his former team) Garnett. The Twins didn't hand Boston Santana. Now I better cross my fingers and hope this deal goes through so it can't happen.
Kyle (Cola, SC)
No kudos? Are you kidding me? I think any QB that has gotten their team to a Super Bowl appearance should deserve kudos...You try going out there and doing it.
Kevin (Arlington, VA)
Jeff, better frontcourts than the Cavs include...Hmmmm just the (Celtics, Magic, Pistons, Spurs, Suns, Hornets, and just about everyother team in the league including the T-Wolves!)
Chris (Denver, Colorado)
Eli, is overrated at best but you cant disagree that because of his play that he deserves to be in the superbowl, next year will be his coming out not the playoffs. Lets see what he does in the 08-09 season.
Max (State College, PA)
Now just wait. What did Eli have, Toomer and Hilliard? come on..He got a big, big name wide receiver in Burress and has done really well to him. If it wasn't for the Brady/Moss hook up...Eli to Burress would be the most successful QB to WR combo in the NFL!
Amy Nelson (11:02 AM)
Is Kidd the absolute key for the Cavs winning a championship? I'm not sure if I buy that one ...
Dan (Buffalo NY)
The only reason small market teams are small markets because most of them have greedy owners
Kevin (Arlington, VA)
Eli just outplayed Garcia, Romo, and Favre in their own buildings!!! That's the three NFC Pro-Bowl QB's in three consecutive games ON THE ROAD, that has to give him some street cred...c'mon people.
Matt (Elk River, MN)
We're talkin prospects man, prospects. Thats all it is, we didn't even get their no. 1 prospects in either pitching or hitting. And Really, I would've rather had him go to Boston, just to see the Yankee's lose more and more.
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
Chris Paul deserves NBA MVP. He's single-handedly led the Hornets to the best record in a tough Western Conference (and Southwest Division). Most of all, for a young player, he's show leadership and consistency.
Nick (Raleigh, NC)
I completely agree max. New England has turned in the 1990's Yankees witht lucky pick-ups and money to throw around(some on cameras for the Spygate), but still Manning does have high INT number and thats not always a recievers fault
Tim (Detroit)
If Kidd is the key to a Cavs championship then they are in trouble because they don't have the players to get a deal done.
Kevin Portland ME
Kidd cannot bring anything to the Cavs, maybe Dallas, San Antonio since T Parker is out. But not Cleveland with that awful frontcourt.
Kenny (Tx)
The cavs wouldnt be able to keep enough talent if they traded for Kidd
Jeff (Ashland, OH)
Kevin, let me retort. Celtics - Garnett and who? Oh yeah Kendrick Perkins and Scot Pollard who didn't even play for the Cavs last year. Suns - Don't even have a center, Amare's a PF and Marion's a SF, shoulda never gotten rid of Kurt Thomas Hornets - Chandler and West I'll give you but if they're so good how come they're desperately trying to sign the druggie Chris Anderson Magic - Dwight Howard and who? Pistons - Antonio McDyess, what is this 1999. Rasheed and Maxiell are good but after that nothing. Spurs - nobody after Duncan Frontcourt means the whole frontcourt, not just one great player.
Shane (Brantley, AL)
Why is everybody getting on the Giants for being confident. Some reporter asked Plaxico Burress if he thought they were going to win the game, of course he thinks they are going to win the game. Then the reporter asked for a score, what's wrong with having a winning prediction like that. I think they are confident because they think they should have won the last time they played and so do I.
Drew (Richmond VA)
I agree with Jordan, Chris Paul is a phenomonal player and this is his true breakout year. He will be one of the best in the league for at least the next 7-8 years
Max (State College, PA)
True, Manning does have a high INT number, but so does Brett Favre..I am one more for judging a player based on the teams success, and in this instance, this season, Eli has been money when it counts.
Jeff (Ashland, OH)
Also Cavs are #1 in rebounding rate based on John Hollingers stats. Yeah there frontcourt is terrible.
Kevin (ATL)
I just busted out laughing reading Max's comment about Eli and Plaxico as the best combo in the NFL behind Moss-Brady..lets see, we have Peyton-Harrison, Peyton-Wayne, Romo-Owens, just to name a few
Tom (Chicago)
Have people forgotten that Jason Kidd can't shoot at all? How does it help the Cavs to have someone that probably can't hit a shot if LeBron kicks it out after a drive?
Kevin Portland
Jeff, you fail to realize that the Celts have it all to win it all this year, don't be hating on a good front office who picked up all the right pieces at the right time, I am sure Cleveland had a chance to get Allen, Garnett, Posey, House they even had a chance to draft Big Baby Davis, but instead they wasted their chances.
DennisC1974 (Delaware)
If Kidd goes to the Cavs, it only means that one more piece has been added to the 3yr championship plan. Nothing more.
Kevin (Arlington, VA)
Jeff..decent point, but see if you've ever heard of these guys. Paul Pierce, Heduk Turkolu (sorry for the spelling disaster), Rashard Lewis, Taysean Prince, etc. I'd give up the entire Cavs frontcourt for Tim Duncan, and for a Amare/Marion combo. The Hornet's are looking for more because they understand what getting a great player more help can do. Maybe the Cavs should take a lesson from that.
Jam (Saratoga,n.y)
the Cavs have no chance in the east, with or without J.Kidd.
Ken (Green Bay)
I would like to point out that the Cubs may have the best pitching staff in the NL. Even though Santana is in NY now, the Cubs' starters posted the best record and their staff had the 2nd best ERA in the NL. Plus, they have the offensive power to win it all, they don't have any weaknesses in my mind.
Tim (Detroit)
Ken- keep in mind that horrible division the Cubs played in last year. That helps explain some of their stats.
Kobe (Los Angeles, CA)
I'll go to the Nets and J Kidd can come here
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
The Celtics are too starters-orianated to win a title. If they can aqwuire Gary Payton or Damon Stodamire, that veteran leeadership at point guard would prove critical come playoff time.
Brian (LA)
Cubs have no weaknesses? Optimism runs eternal in January.
Martin (Brooklyn Ny)
I don't belive Jason Kidd is a good fit for the cavs. I think dealing Larry Hughes for Carter is a better fit. They needed Hughes to be a scorer and he a=has failed. Kidd takes the ball out of LeBron's hand and doesn't give you points himself. Carter can still give you 20 points a game and the desperately need that second scorer.
Shane (Brantley, AL)
The Cubs will be fine, as long as they keep Lou there, because he gives them an attitude they need to be successful in that division and city.
Gray (Chicago)
While I can't agree the Cubs have no weaknesses, they may have the best bullpen in the NL. Their SP isn't the best at all, but this team has improved. Also, the division they play in had nothing to do with the stats. Cincy, Milwaukee, Wrigley, Houston all hitter's parks.
Darin ( Minnesota)
even if Yohan Santana didnt want to be here, would you really blame him, Twins mangament does nothing to make this team better, Bill Smith a (Polad Puppet) should be selling cars instead of trying to run a baseball organization. I feel sorry for the people of Minnesota, what the Polads are doing is stealing from the people, they say they dont make no money but they sure wont sell them. The Polads are the biggest joke in sports
Amy Nelson (11:17 AM)
I don't blame fans for being irritated. You can fault Steinbrenner for a lot of things, but not for opening his pockets. Why can't all the other owners do the same? I just dont get it. Same way I don't understand when wealthy people are cheap.
Joe O, Colonia, NJ
Amy, I don't know if you watched the SAG Awards Sunday night, but The Sopronos won Best Actor, Actress, and Drama. I'm sorry, but The Wire wasn't even nominated...I hink maybe for best wiring...any thoughts?
Amy Nelson (11:17 AM)
Hollywood is the worst.
Ken (Green Bay)
Answer me this: How are the number a joke when the other teams lost with bad PITCHING and had some of the best lineups in the NL? Hint: think the Brewers and Reds. Also, name one weakness they have.
Kevin Portland ME
I think the only thing Jason Kidd brings to any other franchise is more sales in jersey's. His last chance to do anything significant was last year when the deal to go to LA dies. He is on the team that just came out of the nine game losing streak. All he is anymore is just a name. Sorry Jason go join Barkley, Malone, and Reggie Miller in no championship land
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
I also am upset with the direction the Braves are taking. You rarely hear of them being in the hunt for big name players any more. Teixeira will probably walk after this season. They should have been involved in the Santana talks. You cannot tell me that the Braves don't have enough young talent to make a good offer and also their revenues exceeded payroll by $70 million last year. Even taking into account other expenses, they had to make money. I'm sick of them crying poverty under corporate ownership. They won't win anything unless a private owner like Mark Cuban takes the team.
Jeff (Michigan)
Name one weakness of the Cubs? Hardly any speed, and no team chemistry.
Drew (whitehouse ohio)
lebron james is over rated
Amy Nelson (11:20 AM)
Drew, You sure you aren't Skip?
Craig (Ohio)
The cavs need a pure spot up shooter, thats it. You give Kidd way to much credit, what has he ever won?
Dan (Buffalo)
That?s why I love the Steinbrenners because even though they run their mouths I think they earn that right when they put 200 million into their team
Jimpirone Marian (Pennsylvania)
Sweet..I can't wait for the latest and last injury report today. It should be interesting if the unprofessional Bill adds Brady to it again, extending the "streak" they have running. It seems they cheat the system in every way - they setup cameras, they make injury reports useless, etc. It's starting to get annoying. There's the saying "cheaters never prosper" but it seems the Patriots DO prosper..a sad shame.
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Skip v. LeBron on American Gladiators Celebrity Edition.
Shane (Brantley, AL)
I agree, the Braves need to be doing something while Smoltz is still around, he can't pitch forever.
Jeff (Big Rapids, Mi)
What about Minnesota? Can they still be serious contenders for the play-offs with the loss of Tori Hunter and Santana? I think they can if the young guns (Bonser, Liriano, Baker, Young) can stay healthy and productive.
Amy Nelson (11:23 AM)
Jeff, That division will be no cake walk this year. WE talked about it earlier, the pressure on Liriano will be enormous ...
Amy Nelson (11:23 AM)
By the way, if i hear this marry me clip one more time my head is going to explode...
Jason (Pennsyvania)
Liriano is in trouble. If he does not pitch well or for that sake pitch at all, he might be out of the league within the next couple years
Amy Nelson (11:25 AM)
Don't think he'll be out of the league ... i would be more worried for his health. Will he push it too much b/c of all the pressure?
Marsh (St. Louis)
Weakness for the Cubs......how about they are cursed and haven't won in almost 100 years. Man do I love saying that.
Kevin (Arlington, VA)
Amy, I couldn't agree more. You have to hand it to Ines though. I guarantee you her and TV Azteca's stock and web searches have skyrocketed this morning!
Amy Nelson (11:26 AM)
Yep, totally agree.
Chris (Boiling Springs, SC)
You need to destroy all the copies at ESPN, Amy. Do the world a favor.
chris (westport, ct)
who cares if they put brady on the injury report? the only reason it exists is for the bookies out there.
Ken (Green Bay)
No team speed? Well I guess Soriano, Theriot, Pie, Patterson, and Lee are all terribly slow. And no team chemistry? Sorry that they came together after one altercation and overcame a 9 and a half game deficit to win the division and go into the playoffs when no one thought they could. Yeah, they don't lack either of those tow things, plus, they might get Brian Roberts.
Mark (Cedar Rapids, Iowa)
Why is everyone so eager to crown everything or everyone "The Best?" Yes Tom Brady is a great QB, but why is he "automatically" the best ever if he wins this Super Bowl? Same thing in college football with USC, etc.
Amy Nelson (11:27 AM)
I'm with you mark...we always have to rush to put labels on ahtletes and teams...
Josh (Denver)
I'm with you on not labeling things, but what I really want to know is "Who's Now"
Amy Nelson (11:31 AM)
Ok, that made me laugh...
Kris from Minot, ND
Do you think the Twins trading Johan Santana and not giving him a multi-year deal (like the one given to Justin Morneau) was a sign that they are conceding the AL Central to the Tigers and Indians?
Amy Nelson (11:31 AM)
I don't think the Twins are conceding anything at all, they are just trying to be realistic...
Jason(Los Angeles)
I want to join the Eli bashing! If Lenny from Of Mice and Men oh I mean Eli wins a Super Bowl then all hope has been lost.
Jason (Pennsyvania)
Great point Mark. How can you compare the Dolphins (72) vs. Patriot (08). Two different teams, two different eras, to different kind of players, two different kind of rules. The Dolphins were the best of their time and the Patriots are the best or theirs also, well until this weekend when the Giants beat them.
Amy Nelson (11:33 AM)
Hey Mike from Tampa ... I read your comment on the air today about overcoverage of Brady's ankle ... too bad you missed it.
Gary (Mass)
The NFL is at a point of absurdity. There is a coach for every position, extensive training camps and facilities. Needless to say there is much parity and talent in the league. For Tom Brady to do what they did this year you would have to label them the best team ever. The dolphins played no good teams in '72, the Pats played all the division winners and a solid NFC East.
Dean (Worcester, MA)
The Celtics would still run over the Cavs if they got Jason Kidd... Also I think this Patriots team would be the best ever if they go 19-0, that's ridiculous especially with beating Indi, Dallas, and the Giants on the road.
Jason(Los Angeles)
If Eli wins the Super Bowl it will be like the Republicans winning another presidential election. Please god no!
giants (bandwagon)
LET ME ON....I KNOW IT'S ALMOST FULL... BUT LET ME ONNNNN!!!
Amy Nelson (11:34 AM)
OK YOU"RE ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Batch (Boston)
Amy don't you think our need to label current players as the best is due to being selfish? we all want to say, when its all said and done, I watched the best!
Tom (East Texas)
Thx Amy for putting my comment on the Air. Too bad you guys cant have a contest for a fan to win the chance to debate with Skip on the air.
Amy Nelson (11:35 AM)
That would be intersting...
Ollie Jackson (Minnesota)
I am so sick and tired of all these people that are not giving the Giants a shot at winning the Super Bowl but when they prove you all wrong then what? Will you give them the respect that they deserve?
Jason Seattle, WA
Amy, can I get some love for my SOnics, snapped that 14 game losing streak by beating the Spurs!! Playoffs, here we come!!
Bobby (Sioux City IA)
I have always liked the fact that Steinbrenner has opened up his pocketbook but what I can't stand is his "eye for talent"! HA! He keeps overpaying for overrated or overaged players like Damon, Mussina, R. Johnson and Abreu when he should have went after Carlos Beltran, Vladimir Guerrero or Curt Schilling when they were on the market!
Gary (Mass)
Its because we want to witness greatness. Which is happening with Tiger, Federer (although he lost the aussie) and with TOM BRADY
Jeff (Michigan)
Barry Sanders is the best player to not play in a superbowl.
Amy Nelson (11:36 AM)
I loved watching Sanders play. Bo was my all-time favorite athlete to watch play, but Sanders was pretty exciting...
Gary (Mass)
The super bowl is basically like the BCS championship. Its not that the Giants are a bad team but they are coming out of the Big Ten and the pats are coming out of the SEC. The AFC is simply a better cut of football compared to the JV NFC.
Mike (Joplin,MO)
Superbowl/Las Vegas question: how do oddsmakers set the line @ 12 to 14 points when just a few weeks ago the actual score when these two teams played was much closer????
Amy Nelson (11:37 AM)
Mike, I'm not sure, not an expert in point spreads ... anyone out there have some insight?
Michael (Bethel)
Gary, that was a bad comparison. The Giants are more like a team from the Pac-10, not the Big Joke Ten
Josh (Denver)
Yeah, the Pats had a tough row to hoe in the AFC East Gary. Those Jets, Bills and Dolphins are tough
Matt (Peekskill, NY)
The Cavs would have to be the favorites in the east if they picked up Jason Kidd. Regardless of the streaky shooting, Gibson and Jones can hit them, plus the rebounding margin would be even greater with Kidd and his 9 boards a games. Two of the better perimeter defenders in the league and Kidd and James in the same fast break is lethal. Kidd actually manages the game and would help Lebron in his off the ball game, instead of holding the ball so much.
DennisC1974 (Delaware)
How can call eli a joke? he's done what only three other quarterbacks have done in the history of football and that is go on the road to the superbowl. doesn't sound like a joke to me.
Michael (Bethel)
I think I know. The oddsmakers think the Patriots are untouchable
Johnny (Scranton, PA)
Wouldn't trading Kidd to the Cavs set a bad example? It would be like giving in to a whiny kid and then everyone who was playing on a losing team would start demanding a trade. Let him stay in New Jersey or send him somewhere that the Nets want him to go.
Carl (Texas)
I always laugh when a NBA player demands to be traded. It hurts his chances of going to a contender because most contenders aren't dumb enough to give away their entire team and in Kidd's case take on a huge overpaying contract.
Jason (Pennsyvania)
The only reason the Patriots are being considered the best, not to take anything away from their great season, is that there might be a 19-0 record before their name, but would people consider the 72 Dolphins the best if they went 19-0. Just because there are more games in a season now doesnt mean they are the best
Jeff (Michigan)
From what I understand, they just set the line to what they believe would generate the most money.
Chris (Boiling Springs, SC)
Totally disagree, Gary. The elite teams are still in the AFC, but if you look at the win/loss record of games between NFC and AFC teams, it's almost dead even. We're getting close to parity.
Joe O, Colonia, NJ
I liked the Carl Banks interview when he asked Belichek if his '86 Giants dee would stop his Pats of today. Banks face told the answer and I'm sure the Giants were informed.
Dave (NYC)
Here?s a question The NHL is growing in attendance but its still a joke on sports network why?
Amy Nelson (11:41 AM)
Dave, I don't know, but wuold you agree that hockey is far better watched in person? But that's always been the case...so not entirely sure.
Jimpirone Marian (Pennsylvania)
Well, first off all - Vegas takes the Patriots experience into consideration, and second the Patriots were also missing a few players in that game..including an offensive lineman.
John (Georgia)
The oddmakers are just talkin i think the giant have a better chance of winning, they look will prepared on paper and they came to win
chris (westport, ct)
they set the line to where they think that the game will have split money....because split money makes money for the bookies...
Kevin (Arlington, VA)
Amy, the oddsmakers in Vegas are trying to set the spread in an area where they will get a 50/50 betting split on either side. That way the casino's all make money on the "juice" and there is no real risk involved. They just read the pulse of the average sports fan.
Dave (New York,NY)
Spread is 12 to 14 points because few weeks ago was the regular season. This is the Super Bowl. A whole diffrent ball game.
Josh (Denver)
Setting odds is about getting the right kind of action on a game so the casino doesn't lose money. If people weren't taking both sides of the game, the line would move until Vegas has minimized their risk in terms of either side winning/covering.
Jake, HI
If you're going to make college football comparisons, then the Patriots are like Hawaii, cause they went undefeated. New York is like Georgia. Go Giants!
Brad (Cleveland)
Vegas set the points at 12-14 because that's what they think will get the same people to wager on both sides evenly, thus making Vegas the best chance to make the most money. If they set the game at 3-6 points, everyone everyone would bet with the Pats to win, thus having a chance to cost Vegas tons of money if the Pats did win by that margin...if you can understand that.
Joe O, Colonia, NJ
The odds wizards are gambling themselves that the Pats will cover and they can finally get some of the money they lost. The Pats have covered only 2 of thier last 10 games.
Dean (Worcester, MA)
The spread is 12-14 because first of all the Giants had nothing to lose, it was cold out in that week 17 match up, and they were at home as opposed to the Super Bowl with the grass being great, the weather being beautiful (you saw what the Patriots did earlier this season in the nice weather) and the fact that it's a big game for both AND the Patriots have two weeks to prepare.
Amy Nelson (11:43 AM)
Are we straight on the spread now? Thanks for the input..
Tom (Chicago)
If more people went to watch hockey games live, they would be hooked. For me it started with Michigan hockey. A few games at Yost and I was hooked for life.
Matt (Peekskill, NY)
And as a Yankee fan, I couldnt be happier that Santana goes to the Mets. Phil Hughes is too invaluable to give up. I know he got lost in the Joba mania and his injury, but being the top pitching prospect in the majors last year, and a line of 3-0, 2.73 ERA, and a 1.18 whip in his last 5 starts. One day soon, Hughes is going to be an ace.
JIm (Ex-Cleveland)
Too many coaches- I'm looking at my 1955 World Champion Cleveland Browns phote and Paul Brown had four asistant coaches, end, backfield, guards and tackles. I'd like to see an NFL team do that today.
Jeff (Ashland, OH)
Jason, Dolphins had a tremendously easy schedule in '72 and barely won most of their games. Pats played numerous playoff teams (colts, chargers, giants, cowboys, steelers, redskins, as well as Browns who should have made it) and blew out everyone else. Pats > '72 Dolphins.
Dave (New York,NY)
Giants didn't beat the Cowboys. The Cowboys beat themselves with penaltiers at key moments of the game and big dropped passes by Crayton and Fasano. Giants got lucky in Green Bay also. The old Eli Manning will emerge after his focus is knocked off for the second half by Paula Abdul's singing.
Tom (Chicago)
The Pats are like Hawaii? The Pats beat the Colts, Chargers, Cowboys, and Steelers. If Hawaii had beaten USC, Georgia, Oklahoma and Virginia Tech, then you could make that comparison.
Amy Nelson (11:45 AM)
Yeah, not sure I get that Hawaii comparasion ... so Brady is going to have one of the worst games of his career on Sunday ???
john (Georgia)
Brady will have one of his worst game, and the whole season will be a waste of time, the giant front 4 look ready, osi is taking down the brady bunch
Kevin (Arlington, VA)
You're right Dave. It's all about luck for the Giants and it's all about videotaping the opposing team's signals for the Patriots. BTW, the Giants beat the Cowboys with my big rear-end in the defensive secondary. Now that game wasn't luck.
Jordan (Tenn.)
I don't understand all the praise people are giving Eli Manning. People are saying how great he is before he has played in the biggest game of his life.
Gary (Mass)
Eli has ZERO pocket presence. Their O-line has been playing out of their minds. The pats D-line will apply pressure and Eli will turn that 3-step drop into the continuous backpedal like he always does because he is scared of getting sacked. Unlike Brady who stands tall and takes hits.
Amy Nelson (11:48 AM)
Guys we're warpping this up soon...
Dean (Worcester, MA)
Brady will have his worst game? Why do you say that? He has won 3 Super Bowls and Eli has won 3 playoff games... Come on now. This perfect weather will allow the Patriots to do whatever it is they want...
Amy Nelson (11:50 AM)
Ummm I was making a comparasion to Colt Brennan and Hawaii ...
Brad (St. Louis)
I love when Cubs fans get their hopes up every year and get their hearts broken. Face it - Brewers are now team to beat.
Kevin (Arlington, VA)
Amy, how 'bout we wrap this up by posting a comment of mine on the air? Please! :)
Amy Nelson (11:51 AM)
Kevin, Sorry they 86'd me for the day. No more comments ont he air, but I'lll be back next Wednesday and send 'em in,. Hope you guys enjoy the superbowl, and the Santana press conference, whenever it comes. THanks again for all of your comments ...
