Walter Tymczyna, Delray Beach, Florida
Scottie, how well do you think former F1 drivers Villenuve and Montoya will do this NASCAR season?!
Scott Engel (3:05 PM)
Good afternoon everyone! be glad to take your football, NASCAR and even Arena League Pick Em questions today. Montoya now has a year under hsi belt in the stock car, and is a very talented driver who will make a serious push for a Chase berth. The other drivers are big risks except on the road courses. Franchitti, howver, is Montoya's teammate and that will help him be the best of the rest
Moe, Larry, Curley
So, when do you get to see the draft kit?
Scott Engel (3:06 PM)
The Fantasy Racing Draft Kit is now live - great driver rankings and outlooks from Christopher Harris, and we just posted our mock today
Scott Engel (3:10 PM)
My top 10 drivers - Gordon, Johnson, Edwards, Kenseth, Bowyer, Kurt Busch, Stewart, Kyle Busch, Hamlin, Junior
BamBam (On the road)
Scott, 2008 and beyond: Josh Hamilton or Joey Votto? Position aside, who is the more important fantasy player for me?
Scott Engel (3:13 PM)
For the long term, I prefer Votto. Hamilton isn't reliable to get a full load of plate appearances and can be an injury risk
Tito(Florida)
What do you think of Santonio Holmes for next year? 1200-11 possible?
Scott Engel (3:14 PM)
I think the TD numbers are a little generous fro a team that still may runa lot, and I look for 1,100-plus more than 1,200
Nick (Greenwich, CT)
Hey Scott!! If Delhomme comes to training camp healthy next year, can Steve Smith put up Top 10 WR numbers next season? also..do u see Harrison bouncing back nicely next season???
Scott Engel (3:15 PM)
Smith really needs a solid complement more than ever to assure owners of solid play. Harrison is getting on in age and I'm starting to think his health issues in 2007 were no fluke
Pat, NY
better year this year, manny or derek lee?
Scott Engel (3:18 PM)
I would take Rmirez in the close call - Lee is no guarantee in the steals dept anymore, and Ramirez will likely drive in more runs
Eric - CT
Do you think it would be a huge mistake to take Chase Utley with the 2nd pick over Reyes, Ramirez, or Pujols? Pujols injury crosses him off my list. And I don't feel Ramirez will have as good a year with no protection and I still don't believe enough that he has that level of ability. And Reyes is just too streaky and was awful the 2nd half of last year.
Scott Engel (3:20 PM)
It's not a huge mistake, not by any means. There still is a healthy gap between him and the rest of the guys at his position - but I still like Ryes better overall, and unless you play in a head to head format, streaky play isn't a major issue
Chris (Trenton, NJ)
Is Hank Blalock a viable 3B option this season?
Scott Engel (3:23 PM)
Playing in that park, with better play during the second half last year, leads me to believe blalock can be a solid over the full year - it still doesn't appear a trade is imminent
Gino (Bronx)
Better Fantasy QB next year Palmer or Brees? Who are your top 5 QB?
Scott Engel (3:24 PM)
I like Brees better - more consistent and spreads th eball around well - Brady, Peyton, Brees, Romo, Palmer
scott (nyc)
rank these WR's as keepers for next year: b edwards, s holmes, g jennings and calvin johnson
Scott Engel (3:25 PM)
Just in the order you listed them - Edwards has become an elite guy now, Holmes will continue to rise - Jennings will be less consistent and Johnson has more to prove
Steve (NY)
Scott, it seems most of the baseball advice comes with this rotisserie and category league assumption. I think baseball is taking a significant turn towards H2H and points leagues. Shouldn't that change the analysis significantly?
Scott Engel (3:27 PM)
It really depends on how the question is addressed - H2H players usually let me know when it's that system - And I already mentioned the Reyes concerns in H2H formats - I do like H2H myself, although there is more luck involved
Chris(Madison, WI)
Throughout the year you seemed higher than everyone else on Marshawn Lynch, what kind of numbers do you see from him in year 2?
Scott Engel (3:29 PM)
The TMR was the first to embrace Lynch, and the Buffalo RB really impressed me even against tough opponents. I can see 1,100-plus rush yards and 10 total TDs next year, especially if the Bills add another significant WR to bolster the passing game
JP (NY)
Can Borowskidoes survive another season as a closer in Cleveland or is it time for Betancourt?
Scott Engel (3:31 PM)
Looks like it might be another year of Betancourt just being a very effective setup man.
Ed (J'ville)
Scotty, help me with these keeper options. I can keep 3 (12 team league). Addai (1) B. Jacobs (3) Hasselbeck (7) Cutler (9) B. Marshall (11) I think Addai and Marshall are locks, so what about the other three?
Scott Engel (3:34 PM)
Marshall is a certain lock with the 11th-rounder being a scarifice - great drafting by you. Addai will go in the first round to someone else if you toss him back, so keep him
Nick (Greenwich, CT)
Scott! What does the Bedard trade to the Mariners do to his value this season? Increases? Decreases? Stays the same in '08..also, will Sherrill win the O's closer job??
Scott Engel (3:38 PM)
I expected him to be a Cy Young contender no matter where he ended up - Sherrill can be dominant and I like him to have a shot at that job
joe barnegat bay
can you rate this deal? pujols & Hudson for johan and B mccann? who does better? thx
Scott Engel (3:39 PM)
Im not trsuting Pujols with the health concerns - I would much rather be getting Johan, as he moves to a pitcher's park in the NL, better ofefnsive and defensive support, and may let loose with his slider a lot more this year
Frank(Medford, MA)
Travis Henry or Selvin Young next year in Denver? WOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOO Frank is in da house. You think Clemens juiced? Yes or no please.
Scott Engel (3:41 PM)
My early money is on Henry to prove himself ina rebound year. As for Clemens, that's not for me to judge, but facing Mike Piazza seemed to induce 'roid rage from him years ago ;)
joe memphis
roto leagues are a much better way to see who has the best team. h2h is way too much luck involved
Scott Engel (3:42 PM)
I would have to agree, Joe - but I do like the H2h game for playing difefrent teams, having playoffs, etc
ben (mckinney,TX)
who would you rather have in 08? Marion Barber or Laurence Maroney?
Scott Engel (3:43 PM)
I would go with Maroney - I think he really improved late in the year , especially as an inside runner, and he will be more reliable than Barber next year
Frank(Medford, MA)
Well I can say for sure I'll be avoiding all Denver RBs next year. I always admired the Rocket and I hope he didn't but I just don't see why this guy would go after him? What does he gain by lying? Another fallen hero...
Scott Engel (3:45 PM)
Henry was slated to be a full time guy but got hurt. Shanahan still wants him to carry the load. As for Clemens, not for me to judge. Very good fantasy pitcher
Jason(DC)
I've been offered Holmes, Bowe and a 2nd round pick for LJ in my dynasty league. My other backs are Addai, lynch, DeAngelo and Caddy. Wayne and Roddy White are my only good WR's. Should I make the trade?
Scott Engel (3:48 PM)
I think it's obvious you should, especially with LJ's value being down in keeper and dynasty leagues
ben (mckinney,TX)
I know i asked you but how can you not go with Marion the Barbarian? He almost got 1000 yards as a BACKUP and had double-digit TD's in back-2-back seasons...and in the playoffs against NY how showed what he can do with 20+ carries (he had 129 yards + a TD)
Scott Engel (3:50 PM)
Thats not a knock on Barber at all - but as hard as he runs, he doesn't have outstanding speed, and Dallas or any prospective tarde partner is going to want to partner him with a speedster/slasher
Louis (DC)
Who do you project to have a better season, Alex Rios or Curtis Granderson? Which player would you rather have? Thanks.
Scott Engel (3:51 PM)
I really like Rios better - he's going to have another fine all-around year in 2008
Geoff (NY)
Before this chat i was sure MBIII was a much better keeper (4th) than Maroney (2nd), do you really think otherwise?
Scott Engel (3:53 PM)
They are not that far apart from that view - in a straight draft, I would take Maroney first - but with a two-round difference in keepers, I'll go with Barber there
Geoff (NY)
Scott, i respect your fantasy opinions. But who are you to say an NFL RB doesn't have sufficient speed? I think Barber has more than proved he is a capable running back in the league, and who is a fatasy analyst to say he does not?
Scott Engel (3:55 PM)
What I am saying is he doesn't have the breakaway or open-field speed to consistently keep defenses off balance - that's why Dallas long hesitated to increase his workload - I didn't say his speed wa sinsufficient - I am saying there are many faster Rbs who will complement what eh does not do best. He is a cpable RB - I never said he wasn't - but he is not an explosive open-field runner or big-play RB
John (NY)
I'm in a 10 yr old league with my college friends. H2H allows for rivalries and trash talking. Also, in real sports the best team doesn't always win (see: Giants, New York).
Scott Engel (3:56 PM)
The Giants won the Super Bowl, so they are the best team. the only time I think the best team clearly did not win was Super Bowl XL, when Seattle was clearly better than Pittsburgh and was hurt by a lot of iffy calls
Jon (Nj)
Alright, some football questions! Who would you keep, Ronnie Brown (3rd), Jamal Lewis (6th) or LenDale white (10th)?
Scott Engel (3:58 PM)
I would keep White - I can't rely on Borwn to stay healthy and Lewis to keep up the great production - heck, if you kept none of them, it would not hurt you
Joey (Cuse)
Hey Scott, what do you think of Kellen Winslow's keeper stock? I only have to give up a 9th for him, does that make him more valuble than say a Jamal Lewis in the 6th? Thanks for taking my question
Scott Engel (3:59 PM)
That's a great value, even given his health issues - Winslow is indeed a warrior and should serve you well as a top fantasy TE for a few more years
Frank(Medford, MA)
Listen to Scott on Marion B guys. If not, listen to the Tuna - Parcells knew his backs and kept Marion's touches limited for a reason. Besides, next year in Dallas won't be pretty with TO, coaching situation and Romo dating the Simpson girl. It's gonna be ugly in Big D.
Scott Engel (4:00 PM)
Thanks Frank - but we have to wait how the offseason works out first for Dallas before being down on them. Have a great weekend everyone!
