Scott Engel (2:59 PM)
Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to the Monday fantasy football chat! I'll be glad to take your offseason keeper and dynasty questions, address player moves, and even talk Arena Football if you play our Pick 'Em game!
The R (Pasadena, CA)
What to do w/ Mr Chad Johnson. I guess he'd be safe to keep as a 4th Keeper....right?????
Scott Engel (3:00 PM)
I certainly think so - he's not as consistent as we all would like, but he can explode and drive your team to a win in any given week
Scott Engel (3:02 PM)
In case you missed it, Tatum Bell re-signed with the Lions, Jets signed Jesse chatman, and the Bears signed Brandon Lloyd. Bell might still have some value as as a possible starter with a one-year deal, good drafting as a fourth RB
Scott Engel (3:04 PM)
AFL picks for tonight - San Jose big over Grand Rapids, Avengers defeat Rattlers
Jim (philly)
Any word on Larry Fitz?
Scott Engel (3:06 PM)
I trust you heard the rumor that the Eagles offered Lito Sheppard and Reggie Borwn for him, but the word out of Arizona is they won;t trade him. I think it's better for his fantasy value to stay in Arizona, where he will have better complements at WR
Brendan (DC)
Scott, in my PPR league, which 5 would you keep: Roethlisberger, Terrell Owens, Marvin Harrison, Brian Westbrook, Earnest Graham, Ronnie Brown, Jamal Lewis, and Tony Gonzalez. TO and Westbrooks are definites, and I think Lewis is a definite no.
Scott Engel (3:09 PM)
I agree on the first two keepers, as TO and Westbrook are locks. Ronnie Brown makes a great pairing with Westbrook, as long as you draft injury insurance behind him. Roethlisberger is underrated and solid. In a PPR, I would keep Gonzalez to anchor that posiition as well, and then your first draft choice for next year should be a WR to pair with Owens
malik (Tucson, AZ)
Scott, my two keepers are Steven Jackson and Shaun Alexander. Is there any value for a trade with Alexander even left for me out there?
Scott Engel (3:10 PM)
Keep a watch to see if Seattle releases him - if he signed with a team like the Lions or Texans, he could have some decent value - but I would consider tossing him back in the player pool if the Seahawks keep him, and just keep Jackson
DJ MN
I have Jason Campbell as a backup with Farve as my starter. With Farve out do I look for Campbell to become the starter or go out and try to trade or pick up a new starter in FA. Maybe Anderson?
Scott Engel (3:14 PM)
I think you are only asking me to confirm what you already know, and I'm glad to. You know you can't be fully comfortable with Campbell yet
John/Boston
In a PPR league with 4 keepers, can I get away with offering Ronnie Brown and draft picks for Steven Jackson? What about getting Addai?
Scott Engel (3:16 PM)
I think in order to get the other owners to consider it, you may have to offer a first-rounder - and that still may get turned down. But you ultimately do just fine keeping Brown, as long as you have backup insurance
Christan (Portland)
Would you make this trade? Romo, Harrison and Gore for P Manning and C Johnson.
Scott Engel (3:17 PM)
If I had Peyton and Chad I would not do it, but if that is what you are getting, go for it. I wouldn't want to take on Harrison and Gore for the downgrade from Peyton to Romo
Blake OH
Who should I keep out of these players. Need to keep 3. Cooley, Portis, TO, S Alexander, C Johnson, Dunn, and T, Bell.
Scott Engel (3:18 PM)
Owens for sure, and Portis still young and has a lot of remaining upside. Then Chad Johnson for a great WR pair.
Caleb (Pittsburgh)
How do you see Michael Turner doing this season? Good enough to be an RB2?
Scott Engel (3:20 PM)
Solid No. 2 guy, consistency may be an issue as the blocking won't be as good in Atlanta s it was in SD, and the passing game won't always lend proper balance, but he'll have some impressive outings
al (DC)
in a 12 team keeper league, do you keep owens with the 10th pick in teh first round if you are keeping romo (7th) ryan grant (12) and the likley player available there is Peyton quality? I could also keep Santonio in the 6th instead of Owens...
Scott Engel (3:23 PM)
I would toss him back in the player pool, knowing you could get a slightly better elite player or could simply draft him or another top WR again
Adrian Libertyville IL
I have to pick up a TE and there are very few out there. Shockey and Cooley are expensive. What do you think of waitng and picking up someone like Reggie Kelly or Pope. To much risk?
Scott Engel (3:26 PM)
I like Pope with Tuman now brought in for blocking, freeing up Pope more as a pass-catcher. Reggie Kelly has never been more than a blocker. You could also wait and see who is drafted - Seattle should go for a TE early. That position si important in Holmgren's offense
Jeff (Charlotte, NC)
Scott, keep bulger or throw him back and hope for something better. My other QB is Warner
Scott Engel (3:27 PM)
I would take the gamble and simply draft him again if Bulger is the best you can do - by tossing him back into the player pool, you increase your alternatives
DJ (Charlotte NC)
Which under-the-radar RB's currently on NFL rosters, will have the biggest potential to break-out in 2008? (Biggest improvement/impact from 2007 to 2008) Thanks!
Scott Engel (3:32 PM)
Maroney is not under the radar, but I see him making the biggest strides - I don't like Julius Jones for Seattle, really and if you are looking for a big sleeper, I like Ahmad Bradshaw and Michael Bush
Jim (oakland)
Top 10 RBs this year? Does Ronnie Brown make it?
Scott Engel (3:35 PM)
1 - LT 2- Peterson 3- Westbrook 4 - Addai 5- Steven Jackson 6 - Lynch 7 - Ryan Grant 8 - Portis 9 - McGahee 10 - Brown (just makes the cut over Parker and Maroney)
Larry Johnson
No love for me in the top 10?
Scott Engel (3:41 PM)
LJ was considered, but was another one who misses the cut - the blocking will continue to be a big issue and the passing game won't lend much support - plus they will have to play from behind, too - he is top 15, not top 10
Matt (Des Moines)
Do you think the loss of Jake Scott will have any real impact on Joseph Addai or any other member of the Colts offense? I know it's the Colts, but they sometimes struggled with Tony Ugoh out last year...
Scott Engel (3:43 PM)
Well, I think they will make sure he is replaced effectively, and let's remmeber Ugoh will only get progressively better - if there is mor epass pressure, that could mean More flat passes to Addai, so Ia m not worried - plus, Peyton has a really quick release and the TEs block well and can help the line
serioulsy is there i fantasy starter
serioulsy is there i fantasy starter from the chicago bears offense excluding gould?? i dont think there is
Scott Engel (3:44 PM)
I think Greg Olsen can emerge as a starter this year, a top 10 guy at TE. Other than him, no - Marty Booker? Brandon Lloyd? LOL
John(Fla)
Hey Scott...do you think Julius Jones in Sea is an upgrade Fantasy wise? What kind of stats do you expect from him this season?
Scott Engel (3:46 PM)
I don't think he can carry regularly and will share time with Alexander and/or Duckett - 800-plus yards, 4-5 TDs
Rob (MS)
How bad will the Panthers offense be this year BUT how good will Steve Smith be>?
Scott Engel (3:47 PM)
They can offer more in the running game with Williams and maybe someone they draft - The passing game should sputter overall and Smith will be inconsistent
Dave (Santa Rosa, CA)
Do you like Buress and Jacobs or SSmith and LWhite? Thanks
Scott Engel (3:48 PM)
Burress and Jacobs - the WR difference makes me go that way, as Eli has turned the corner in his career and Burress is his fave guy
Frank Gore (SF)
Martz will devalue me that much?
Scott Engel (3:49 PM)
I think opening up the passing game more will help Gore, and he should be a solid No. 2 fantasy RB
Cedric Benson
I'm going to put up massive stats this year, watch out...cause the call me Mellow Yellow (quite rightly)
Scott Engel (3:49 PM)
One Cedric Benson supporter remains ....
Debbie Downer
Football talk? But it's March. Wah-waahhhh....
Scott Engel (3:50 PM)
Baseball isn't the only sport with a Hot Stove! :)
Barry (NY)
I know you're mostly a football guy but could you help us out with an NBA questions? With Dwayne Wade done for the year, who would benefit the most and be deserving of a pickup from the lowly Heat? Thanks.
Scott Engel (3:53 PM)
My good friend Mr. Karabell covers thta here, Barry. http://sports.espn.go.com/fantasy/basketball/fba/story?id=3286427
Mike (Phomenix)
Do you like LA to beat Arizona tonight in AFL?
Scott Engel (3:55 PM)
Yes, they are my pick. Lang Campbell looked good in the opener, but that was against a bad Utah defense, and it will be tougher this week. Sonny Cumbie threw three INT slast week, but should make less mistakes tonight
Caleb (Pittsburgh)
Who would win in a fight - you or Berry?
Scott Engel (3:56 PM)
I would be on his side - win or lose - I would only fight for him, not against him. :)
Jim (philly)
TO or Wayne?
Scott Engel (3:57 PM)
I would take Wayne, at an earlier point in his career, and really coming into his own as Manning's top target
C.HILL (Detroit)
I can only pick 4, Peyton, Shaun A, Rudi J, Marvin H, Plax, Braylon, which 4?
Scott Engel (3:59 PM)
Manning is obvious - Braylon Edwards is young and elite, and Plaxico is top 10 at his position - great WR pairing for you. I would actually keep those three and toss the others back in the player pool
Scott (Denver)
Why do you like San Jose big tonight? They looked awful last week. Awful!
Scott Engel (4:01 PM)
True - but that was against another elite team - the Rush. Philly is king right now, but Chicago is up there in the top 3 for sure. Playing Grand Rapids is a big difference, and the 'Cats will prove they are still a top 5 team in the league. Thanks a lot everyone!
