Mark Garrow (4:00 PM)
Good afternoon everyone..welcome into our weekly Wednesday Fantasy chat..don't forget this Sunday morning at 10:30 eastern we'll do another one after talking to the crew chiefs before the Food City 500..Let the fun begin!
What is the best lineup for Bristol? 1)Earnhardt Jr,Kyle Busch,Kurt Busch,Biffle,Kvapil, and Jarrett. 2)Earnhardt Jr,Gordon, Kurt Busch,Biffle,Kvapil, and Mayfield 3)Earnhardt Jr,Kyle Busch,Kurt Busch,Biffle,Kvapil, and Mayfield. Or any other suggestions, like Edwards?
Mike (Carbondale, IL)
I'm going to be in a tough spot every time Mark Martin sits out a race. Would you go with his replace Almirola or roll the dice with Mayfield this week? Thanks!
Mark: I have held onto #48 thinking this is the week he turns in atleast a top 5. And for three weeks, 48 has dissapointed. Should I forget and forgive the past three weeks and keep him for one more week, or is it time to move on and drop him?
Mark Garrow (4:04 PM)
Sorry Chad my answer to you disappeared..It appears to me line-up number three is the best because I think you have to have Kyle Busch on your team and I think the same thing about Carl Edwards..both can do no wrong right now..First line-up with Dale Jarrett in it ..doesn't do much for me..I know its DJ's last points race but top-25 is about all you can expect from him right now..I also think Biffle is going to be really good this weekend..might want to rethink the whole deal..
Mark Garrow (4:05 PM)
Mike in Carbondale..I'd leave Almirola alone..A rookie with just about zero experience at Bristol..ugly combination..if the only choice is Mayfield..take him and pray.......a lot...
Mark Garrow (4:06 PM)
Jim in LA...welcome the group that has been burned to the ground by Jimmie Johnson..time to take a break from Jimmie..1) He admits he doesn't "marry" up to Bristol very well..2) bad mojo..I'd sit him for the next three races..through Texas and let him prove they've got dealed turned around before you jump back on his bandwagon.
robert fort worth
what kind of driver does it take to win at bristol? who are your picks?
Mark Garrow (4:07 PM)
It takes a guy that is going to get up on the wheel and stay there..My top three picks this week Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, and Dale Jr..honorable mentions Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, and Greg Biffle.
Derek (Alexandria, VA)
Mark, really enjoy these chats, especially Sunday mornings and your insights - thanks! Who would you take in your line up for Bristol: Ernhardt or Biffle?
Mark Garrow (4:08 PM)
Honestly I'd like to have both of them on my team..but if I had to pick on I'd go with Junior..I think he'll have a horse good enough to win, I really do.
Nascar is really boring to watch and shouldnt count as a sport. I know its really hot inside the cars but besides that, no physical toughness is used
Mark Garrow (4:11 PM)
Jeff, got to answer this one..the length of mental focus, the physical exertion it takes with no break for three to four hours..they are athletes and have to train like ones..you see these guys Edwards, Johnson, Gordon..they work out man because it is that physically demanding..I asked that question to Earl Campbell one time are drivers athletes?..His answer ..You're kidding me they have to stay in the game for up to four hours...I run take a 30 second breather and then go to the sidelines and sit for awhile..they're in the game the whole time..yeah they're athletes..nuff said..
Who would pick as your lower 2 drivers this week at bristol?
Mark Garrow (4:14 PM)
Matt, I'm looking at Scott Riggs and Brian Vickers this week real hard for that category..depending on how qualifying and practice goes for him Travis Kvapil another guy off the radar..has run a lot of truck races at Bristol..I'll certainly have more on that with my Sunday morning chat..depends a lot on qualifying and practaice..but there will be at least two to four solid dark horse picks to think about before the green flag.
Edwards or Kyle Busch for Bristol? I can't afford both and I have to let Gordon go to have either... and what about Kurt Busch, his record here is outstanding?
Mark Garrow (4:17 PM)
Kyle Busch is on fire right now and Edwards not to far behind him..Kurt does have an outstanding record at Bristol but I need to see his car in practice and qualifying..Busch and that team seem to be a little off right now..not by a lot..but off nonetheless.
Mark Garrow (4:25 PM)
I'd keep an eye on all three RCR cars this weekend..Harvick, Burton, and Bowyer all top-10 at Atlanta and could do that again at Bristol..Harvick has a shot to run top-five..Burton and Bowyer should be sneaky top-10 candidates.
I need some help on the back end of my roster. Any guys out there that might help? Guys that might still be available?
Mark Garrow (4:27 PM)
I believe Riggs could be some help this week and another guy is Vickers..and I go back to Kvapil..If he qualifies half way decent he'll run well in the race..that seems to be the deal with this team..maybe a Reutimann might also be available..he's a good little short track racer.
When will Dale Jr. get win number 1 with Hendrick Motorsports?
Mark Garrow (4:27 PM)
I think it could happen this weekend..good car and he runs Bristol really well.
Do you think this tire situation will effect fantasy? Should I be looking to play it safe with my lineup?
Mark Garrow (4:28 PM)
I don't see tires being an issue at all next two races Bristol and Martinsville..Texas is another story..Goodyear has announced they'll use last year's tire combination but it's never been used with a CoT there..so that could be interesting..but no problems in the next couple of races.
Marty (Chesterfield, MI)
What are the race conditions looking like this weekend?
Mark Garrow (4:29 PM)
Last forecast looked like we might get a little wet Saturday but Sunday looked good..hard to say..when you're up in the mountains it changes a lot from hour to hour let alone day to day.
Ben (Baton Rouge, LA)
I think Ryan Newman has something like 3 top 10s in the last 5 Bristol races. Do you like his chances this weekend? Are past results a good indicator usually?
Mark Garrow (4:30 PM)
Ben, past results help..team has also got to have some positive momentum..Newman's fourth in the points and has gotten off to a decent start..He should be top-10 potential at Bristol Sunday afternoon.
I really think it's Hamlin's turn to make a splash this week, or is his team just struggling too much? Besides his crash in the second race at Bristol last year, his three other runs are pretty good. Thoughts?
Mark Garrow (4:31 PM)
I think all three of the Joe Gibbs cars will run strong this Sunday..All could potentially run top-five they really could..I think Hamlin will turn out to be a solid pick for the Food City 500.
Well any other suggestions besides Kurt Busch? In that same price range and driver quality?
Mark Garrow (4:32 PM)
Chad give me some ideas as to what you're looking at give me some names..and I'll be glad to disect them for you..
Ben (Baton Rouge, LA)
Isn't there progressive banking at Bristol now? How does that affect things?
Mark Garrow (4:33 PM)
The banking is progressive and the track is wider with the new layout..I think it will eventually lead the Cup cars to put on a great race..hope its this time, but it will come..track dynamics and teams too good..once they get the new car ironed out at Bristol..watch out..this new layout will be really exciting.
Andrew ( Bristol, CT)
Which pairing will deliver better results 1. 88 and 20, or 2. 24 and 48?
Mark Garrow (4:34 PM)
Andrew, I'd go with the 1,88, and 20..48 scares me right now..but I can see the 88 and 20 running top-five at Bristol and the 1 top-10..so you'd be in really good shape.
Now with the points penalty, is it worth trying to make a move to get Edwards in my lineup?
Mark Garrow (4:38 PM)
I think Edwards is going to be good just about everywhere we go..this team just doesn't seem to have weak link.
Any early dark horses this week (maybe someone 8th or less in the standings)?
Mark Garrow (4:40 PM)
How about Bobby Labonte..should be good for a top-15..Truex is 11th in points and will be good..Vickers and Riggs worth some thought too..Clint Bowyer in 16th should be good..Denny Hamlin 19th..
Instead of Kurt Busch, drivers like Harvick, Hamlin, and Newman? and do you think its a good idea to get rid of Gordon for Kyle Busch in terms long term not just Bristol?
Mark Garrow (4:42 PM)
Right now it looks like Kyle Busch has it going on so I would reluctantly trade Gordon for him and hope it pays off..because a normal bad day for Jeff is top-10..Kyle can sometimes surprise you..but he's driving hard but with a level of maturity he hasn't shown before..As for Harvick, Hamlin and Newman..I could easily seem them all finishing top-10..all three will be strong at Bristol...I'd rank them just like that..Harvick,Hamlin, and Kurt Busch.
No chance I might be able to get Edwards cheap with his knock down in the standings?
Mark Garrow (4:44 PM)
Edwards is still going to have a pretty hefty price because he's one of the top dogs every week it seem..
What did the Burton team change with the car before Atlanta that morning? Should we be concerned with the Roush trannys at Bristol after Kenseth changed his the night before and Edwards blew his?
Mark Garrow (4:49 PM)
We talked with his crew chief Sunday and he told me they are making some major changes with shocks and springs..must have worked out because Burton was solid all afternoon..as for the tranny deal those thingas are basically bullet proof they are liable not to have a problem there for the rest of the year.
Andrew ( Bristol, CT)
It seems so far this season that (not including finishes) the 18, 24, 88, and 99 have seperated themselves from the field a little bit. Do you see that playing out this weekend in Bristol?
Mark Garrow (4:50 PM)
Andrew, you're absolutely right and I do see the 18,99,24, and 99 are a cut above eveyrone else right now..should show at Bristol as well..
Mike Toms River
Do you see Franchitti having any top 10s this year, other than road courses?
Mark Garrow (4:51 PM)
He could luck into one, but I don't see it. He just doesn't to have it really figured out yet..
Mark Garrow (4:55 PM)
Don't forget about our Sunday morning chat from Bristol it will begin at 10:30 eastern after we spend a couple of hours in the garage.
Thanks for the crew chief notes Sunday--they are interesting to read. I guess Stewart and Kyle Busch should continue to be frustrated with their cars so they can end up 1-2! Enjoy the info. from you thanks again.
Mark Garrow (4:56 PM)
No kidding..Steve Addington sure threw us a curveball Sunday morning..scared me off Kyle..that happens sometimes..but that is real time info..I find it interesting and valuable.
Mark Garrow (4:57 PM)
Got to run catch everybody Sunday morning..until then may the force be with you.
