Let the countdown begin. We're 24 hours away from the best two-day run on the sports calendar. Let's talk brackets for the next five hours!
Mike(Cincinnati)
I'm I crazy or does Clemson have an actual chance of going to San Antonio????
Keith Lipscomb (12:04 PM)
Well, I might as well get this out of the way off the top. I think we all know that anything can (and often does) happen in the Big Dance, so there's no question they have a chance. If there's one thing I think we've all learned from the tourney over the years, it's that which teams win and lose don't always make sense on paper, which is why we love to WATCH the games.OK, now that I got that off my chest. Clemson certainly could get to a Sweet 16 matchup with Kansas, and has the makeup to take them out. I don't see it happening, though, personally.
James (South Bend)
Which 16seed hangs around the longest?
Keith Lipscomb (12:05 PM)
UT-Arlington in the literal sense, since they play last.
Keith Lipscomb (12:06 PM)
But seriously, James, I thought Portland State got a bad seed. They're better than a No. 16, so I like them to give their No. 1 (Kansas) the best game.
Zac (Boston)
What's the word on Drew Lavender for Xavier? Is he going to be 100%? My bracket is in the hands of the team trainer
Keith Lipscomb (12:07 PM)
I'm not sure he's going to be at full strength the rest of the way, but he definitely seemed to be moving better in the A-10 tourney than he was in the regular-season finale, at least from my vantage point on the couch.
Nick (IN)
Keith, do you agree Butler got screwed? 29-3, sweet 16 last year returning 4 starters....i can't fathom how a 7 seed makes any sense at all.
Keith Lipscomb (12:09 PM)
Yeah, I thought they should have received a better seed. Maybe a six, since they didn't play the same non-conference schedule they did last season. You could argue, though, that this team is better than last year's squad, because of the presence of Matt Howard down low.
Joe lincoln Nebraska
What do you think of the way the tournament was seeded? Do you like the mids playing each other?
Keith Lipscomb (12:12 PM)
I know the seeding process is a very tough exercise, after having been involved in meetings with committee chairmen in past years. That being said, every year I have a few issues with teams' seeds. Some seeds are swapped for location and usually for the benefit of the higher seeds, so I hate to be too critical when there are certainly issues I'm not completely aware of.And yeah, I'm with you on the mid-majors playing each other whenever one gets a reasonably good seed (Drake this year). I'm not a fan of that at all, but oh well.
Gerardo (WA)
I got USD upsetting Uconn.. Bad move?
Keith Lipscomb (12:14 PM)
I considered it, Gerardo, but couldn't pull the trigger. If both Jeff Adrien and Hasheem Thabeet play as well as they're capable, it will be hard for USD to handle them down low AND still deal with A.J. Price and crew on the perimeter. The Toreros have been some decent teams, so we know they are more than capable of turning the trick.
AL (Nashville)
How good is Texas? Do they really have a shot at the final four? They have terrific guard play but is it enough?
Keith Lipscomb (12:16 PM)
I think they're very good. Just look at the teams they've beaten this season: Tennessee (by 19), at UCLA, Kansas...very impressive and they're not just solid in the backcourt. Damion James has had some monster games this season and Connor Atchley is underappreciated.
CJ (Springfield, MO)
What about Drake making the sweet 16? possible?
Keith Lipscomb (12:18 PM)
I think that's a really tough portion of the bracket to call. I can see both Drake and UConn losing. I actually picked Drake to lose to WKU, another guard-heavy perimeter-oriented squad. But no question Drake could get to the Sweet 16. They are very tough to stop and the nation could get a good glance at Emmenecker, and how much he does for that team.
Dave (Shelby, MI)
What do you think is the key for Duke? Most will say Zoubeck/Thomas manning the post, but I think it is Taylor King coming back to his early season form and Duke just shooting the 3ball consistantly. What do you think is the Key?
Keith Lipscomb (12:22 PM)
I'm not going to put it all on one or two players with Duke, actually. I think the key, beyond them shooting the ball well, of course, is the same as it's been all season: rebounding and scoring off of turnovers. The reason I say that is because when they're not shooting the ball well, they've been able to turn teams over and get easy buckets. And if they're getting beat on the boards, as well, they're in trouble.
Jim (Pittsburgh)
Is Bobby Knight insane, or do my Panthers actually have a shot at this thing? (or both?)
Keith Lipscomb (12:25 PM)
He's certainly not insane. In fact, he's a very smart man. And while I think Pitt will have a tough time with Michigan State in the second round, this team is always a tough team to deal with for any opponent. If they face Memphis in the Sweet 16, I think the key could wind up being how that game is called by the officials, oddly enough. Pitt's physical style of play is very important, especially against a team with such athletes as Memphis has. I don't think they would beat Memphis, but they would be in the game the whole time.
Alex (Princeton)
Clemson to the Final Four? I think hack a Hammonds will end that dream.
Keith Lipscomb (12:27 PM)
Yeah, that's a big concern of mine with Clemson. When you shoot 62 percent from the line, you always leave yourself open to a tough loss in the tourney. Memphis obviously faces the same obstacle, but coach Cal's team is also more talented.
Tim (Denver)
So, who is taking credit for coining the phrase "chalk" that I have heard so many times this week?
Keith Lipscomb (12:28 PM)
It's an old phrase, actually, and I believe it dates back to horse racing and whichever horse had the most money on it, got the most chalk marks on the board, for example. I could be wrong, but that's what I was told as a kid. I guess I believe everything my parents taught me.
Gerry (Tucson)
Vanderbilt or Siena, I am thinking Siena? Upset or No?
Keith Lipscomb (12:30 PM)
A lot of people seem to be on the Saints' bandwagon, but I'm not one of them. They are definitely a better team with Alex Franklin, but they still will have a hard time defending A.J. Ogilvy on the inside, while still accounting for the perimeter game of Shan Foster. Siena is a poor rebounding team, so they will have to hold Vandy to one-and-dones at the defensive end and hit their 3s like they did in the MAAC title game.
blake b (highands ranch, colorado)
What do you think about memphis? They have the best overall record, and deserve to go to the national championship
Keith Lipscomb (12:32 PM)
I don't think any team deserves to go to the national title game based simply on what they've done to this point, but Memphis is definitely as talented as any team out there. I think free throws are the only thing that concerns the experts, really. I have them in the Final Four, but losing to UCLA.
Paul (Ft Worth)
West Virginia over Duke in the 2nd round?
Keith Lipscomb (12:35 PM)
Definitely possible. Joe Alexander has been unreal down the stretch and even very strong defenses have had a hard time slowing him down. If WVU is to beat Duke, they'll have to obviously defend the perimeter well, limiting the Devils' good looks and take care of the basketball, so Duke doesn't get on one of those big runs off of turnovers. The Mountaineers' shooters are spotty, so they'll need someone on the perimeter to play well, whether it be Alex Ruoff or Darris Nichols.
Ben (Fairfax VA)
How do you think George Mason will fare against ND?
Keith Lipscomb (12:37 PM)
I hear some people picking them to upset the Irish, but I don't see it. This Mason team isn't as good as the team two years ago in most estimation and I really like this Notre Dame team. Tougher than in past seasons, and while Harangody is a load in the paint, McAlarney is an absolute deadeye. I think the Irish will be tough for Mason to take out.
MW (NY)
Butler over Tennesee? Si o No
Keith Lipscomb (12:39 PM)
Talk about a contrast in styles ... wow, it would be a very interesting game to watch. Butler plays even slower in postseason play, and does whatever it can to take away a team's athleticism and fast-break opportunities. And they execute so well in the halfcourt, that I wouldn't put anything past the Bulldogs. However, you're chatting with someone who has Tennessee in the championship game, so my answer is no, I don't think Butler will win that game (and that's if Butler gets there, since I've heard a strong USA sentiment with the games being played in Birmingham).
Brian (Chicago)
Keith, do you ever hesitate to go on the record with these picks? You, like the rest of us, could look very foolish by tomorrow night. My picks won't be in print, though!
Keith Lipscomb (12:41 PM)
Oh yeah. I'm Mr. Wishy-Washy, because I feel like I could give you a reason each of the 64 teams could win the next two days. But it's all in fun and no matter how many games you watch, the tournament always provides plenty of surprises, which is why it's my favorite thing in the world!
Billy (Philly)
Why is everybody on St Joe's over Oklahoma? Big 12 is a tougher conference and Oklahoma has far more quality wins.
Keith Lipscomb (12:43 PM)
You know, Billy, I was wondering that myself, too. It's not that St. Joe's can't beat Oklahoma, because I'm not that huge a fan of the Sooners. But it seems that it's 60-40 St. Joe's from all the people I've spoken to and I'm not convinced of that. Both teams are moody in different aspects of their games, so which teams show up will have as much to do with who wins as anything. I personally think St. Joe's will have a tough time dealing with both Blake Griffin and Longar Longar down low and will have to shoot it well to beat OU.
Mike (Detroit)
Keith, in the Big Ten, Wisconsin fans do a lot of talking but after the dance they are strangely silent. Do you think Wisconsin will "prove themselves" this year?
Keith Lipscomb (12:47 PM)
Wisconsin is a team that could argue they got bumped down a seed further than they should have, and going from a 2 to a 3 is a big difference in this particular bracket, since the 15s are pretty weak overall.I actually have the Badgers falling prey to my biggest upset in the bracket, losing to Cal State Fullerton in Round 1. Obviously, it's not a popular pick, but I think the Titans have enough shooters, particularly Josh Akognon and Marcus Crenshaw to hurt the Badgers. And Scott Cutley is undersized inside, but tough and a good passer. Just a wild hunch. Gotta pick one or it's not fun!
Jack Smalley Onalaska, Wisconsin
Who is going to have a better game Mao or Bessly?
Keith Lipscomb (12:49 PM)
Beasley will have the better game, because hey, let's face it, he pretty much always does. And K-State leans on his numbers more than maybe any other team in the country. That's such an intriguing game for me, and not because of the Beasley-Mayo thing as much as the rebound battle, where KSU is dominant on the glass, and in the backcourt, where K-State can't shoot it worth a lick and USC defends well. It should be a lot of fun. Can't wait for that one.
AG (NY)
Which lower-seeded team do you have going the farthest in the tournament?
Keith Lipscomb (12:52 PM)
AG, I am really disappointed that I just couldn't bring myself to pick too many crazy upsets this year. After a year with so few upsets last year, I'm worried that this year could be much crazier than many expect. We'll see. But as far as my bracket goes, I have USC going to the Elite Eight (I have Georgetown being upset in the 2nd round), and Gonzaga to the Sweet 16. But nothing outrageous for the first time since I can remember. Kinda disappointing, I know.
James (Co Springs, CO)
Keith, which 12-5 matchup is the best to go with and why?
Keith Lipscomb (12:53 PM)
There's no question Villanova has the talent to knock off Clemson. We'll see which Nova team shows, though. The only one I took was Western Kentucky over Drake. I think many are picking Temple to do in Michigan State, but I expect State to win that game.
Peter (Quahog, RI)
Does Georgia stay hot against Xavier or are they about to hit a wall?
Keith Lipscomb (12:56 PM)
I'm not even sure Georgia will have to hit a wall to lose to a good team like Xavier. Things fell just right for Georgia in their run to the SEC title, in my opinion. Most notably, getting Arkansas in the title game instead of a Tennessee team that would have run them ragged. Xavier is a really good team and I hope the nation gets to see what incredible balance and talent they have.
Ben (Baton Rouge, LA)
Why can't Drake make a run into the elite 8?
Keith Lipscomb (12:56 PM)
Because UCLA is in the way. And that's enough for me. Sweet 16 is very attainable, but a win over the Bruins would be very impressive.
Andy (Ann Arbor, MI)
TN or UCLA?
Keith Lipscomb (12:57 PM)
Andy, that happens to be my title game and I took the Bruins.
Anthony
Any advice on the Arkansas/Indiana game?
Keith Lipscomb (12:59 PM)
Yeah, flip a coin since it's hard to guess the mental state of both squads. But seriously, I had a really hard time picking this game and I went with Indiana because I expect them to be able to refocus and have White and Gordon do damage, while either Bassett or Crawford step up and help from the outside. But that was easily one of the 2-3 toughest games for me to assess.
Keith Lipscomb (1:01 PM)
Hey, I'm going to step out for a moment and let Pete Tiernan hop in here to answer your questions. I will be back in here at 3:00 ET, though, for more great questions from you all. Pete's got a great mind, so pick it!
Buzzmaster (1:03 PM)
Hey folks, Pete will be here soon to take all your questions on strategies when filling out your bracket!
Dan (Boston)
Any 2-15 or 3-14 matchups that could ruin some brackets?
Pete Tiernan (1:08 PM)
I do not like to pick any upset lower than a 5-12. The numbers say that there is one 4-13 and that is Winthrop over Washington St. But there are no statistical conditions that favor a 3-14 or 2-15. The closest if Georgia vs. Xavier. And Georgia is the lowest seeded big six conference team in the history of the tournament.
Clinton (Indianapolis)
Could Purdue-Baylor be an upset special?
Pete Tiernan (1:09 PM)
Yes, in fact Baylor shows all the conditions of an eleven seed Cinderella, as does Kansas State over USC.
Mike - Duluth, Georgia
Pete,In a Elite 8 matchup between UNC and Louisville, how do you view the Cardinals chances against the Tar Heels?
Pete Tiernan (1:10 PM)
I have run ten statistical models and two of them have Louisville beating UNC, both because of coach Petino's historical record of overachievement in the tournament.
nathan (cincinnati)
Does Davidson (assuming they beat Gonzaga) have a chance to actually beat georgetown
Pete Tiernan (1:11 PM)
There is always a chance. Davidson has a couple of things going in their favor. They are playing in Raleigh, they are a high-scoring team, and they have an All-American. All of those things contribute to overachievement in the tournament.
Willie (Portland, OR)
Who has the better chance at beating Memphis.......Oregon or Mississippi St.?
Pete Tiernan (1:13 PM)
Well considering that nine seeds are 3-47 against one seeds in the second round, and eight seeds are 9-33, I would pick Mississippi State.
Zack - Lucedale, MS
What are the chances South Alabama pulls out a win in the first round?
Pete Tiernan (1:15 PM)
Well I think that is a matchup that I had to think long and hard about. South Alabama are playing close to home, and they match up well with Butler. I think they have a good chance to win the game, although I did pick Butler over them in my own bracket, because I believed Butler deserved a higher seed than what they got (a No. 7 seed).
Mark (NYC)
Could Nova go to the Sweet Sixteen?
Pete Tiernan (1:16 PM)
Villanova does have some statistical factors that favor them upsetting Clemson, and Vandy is a weak four seed primarily because of their defense. So it is possible. But I would pick Clemson in that mini-bracket.
Cindy (Rye, NY)
Hey Pete. Best time of the year!! Do you think Marquette can pull the upset on Stanford?
Pete Tiernan (1:18 PM)
I would not consider that an upset. My numbers show that Marquette could beat Stanford. In fact, the very first statisitical model I ran had Marquette going to the final four.
Harry (VA)
What are the Hoya's chances of winning it all?
Pete Tiernan (1:21 PM)
Well they have to go through Kansas, and Kansas is, according to possesion base stats, the most efficient team in the nation. But Bill Self, has a habit of underachievement in the tournament, so I have Georgetown in my Final Four.
Gerry (Tucson)
Kent State over UNLV?
Pete Tiernan (1:23 PM)
That was one I debated. At first I picked Kent State, and then I switched it to UNLV. The MAC schools have a tendency to spring surprises in the tournament, so it is not an outrageous pick.
Joe (DC)
Hey Pete, do you think West Virginia can make it to the sweet 16 over Duke?
Pete Tiernan (1:26 PM)
I do have a few statistical models that have WVU going as far as the Elite Eight. But I also have a few in which they lose to Arizona in the first round. Duke is a vulnerable two seed, however.
Justin: (Buffalo, NY)
I've got Notre Dame beating North Carolina in the sweet sixteen - am I totally crazy?
Pete Tiernan (1:28 PM)
Maybe a little crazy. Notre Dame does have to things going for them. They are high-scoring and they have an All-American, signs that they will beat seed expectations. But, five seeds are just 5-26 against one seeds in the Sweet 16. Plus they have to get by Washington State.
Mike (Pgh)
Hi Pete - what is the furthest Pitt has gone in your statistical models? And how far do you think they will really make it? Thanks!
Pete Tiernan (1:30 PM)
I have at least three of my models have Pitt beating Memphis and then losing to Texas. In my personal bracket. I have Pitt reaching the Final Four. That said, I grew up in Mt. Lebanon, just outside of Pittsburgh.
Pete Tiernan (1:31 PM)
Hey guys, thanks a lot. It was fun. If you want to see what makes the tourney tick go to www.bracketscience.com
Buzzmaster (1:32 PM)
Hey everyone, mid-major expert Michael Litos is here to answer your questions about the mid-majors in the tournament!
Michael Litos (1:35 PM)
Hey everyone, I'm probably not as smart as Pete Tiernan, but I'll do my best to give you some mid-major flavor.
Max (St. Louis)
Could Drake take out G'town?
Michael Litos (1:36 PM)
Drake's problem is going to be Western Kentucky and taking out Courtney Lee, who is the best player on the floor. They could take out Georgetown, but I just don't think they have an answer for Roy Hibbert. But they're on the other side of the bracket!
Brett ( Houston )
How about Boise St. over Louiville for a crazy upset special?
Michael Litos (1:37 PM)
I think you'd absolutely be crazy. Boise State athletically could match up with them, but Louisville can run payers in waves at you, and they're playing great basketball right now.
John- Baton Rouge, LA
Why aren't more people high on Butler? I think they will get into the Sweet 16 with a win over TN.
Michael Litos (1:38 PM)
I think when you talk about a lot of people, they're reacting to a seven-seed that the committee gave them. They'll have their hands full in the first round with South Alabama, but they could definitely take down Tennessee. Any team that wins 29 out of 32 deserves attention.
Aaron (Pennsylvania)
Pitt fan hereHow is Oral Roberts? And do they have a chance to knock off Pitt?
Michael Litos (1:39 PM)
I think Pitt is probably too big and too defensively gifted. Where Oral Roberts could exploit them is that Pitt isn't the best defensive team. Oral Roberts' inside-outside combination is going to give Pitt trouble.
Mark (Chicago)
It's official: everyone outside Norman is on St Joe's bandwagon. But do they really have a legitimate shot at beating the Sooners?
Michael Litos (1:40 PM)
I think they absolutely do. There's plenty of room on that bandwagon. Blake Griffin has had about three hunred knee surgeries in the past few months, so they're banged up, but they will give Oklahoma a lot of problems. I've picked them in my bracket.
Brandon DeGraff OH
Xavier in the final 4! What do you think do they have a shot
Michael Litos (1:41 PM)
In a word, no. UCLA is just too strong, and with Lavender not at 100 percent, I don't think they can do it. I think they can stop Duke, but not UCLA.
Chad (South Carolina)
How about St.Marys over Miami. I have St. Marys winning in every bracket.
Michael Litos (1:42 PM)
St. Mary's is a very good pick. People are down them because they did not win the WCC title, but Simpson is a solid player, as is Mills. Miami doesn't like to defend and gives up a lot of threes, so if Mills is shooting, they could run away with it. I'd hesitate to even call that an upset.
Katelyn (Syracuse, NY)
Is Gonzaga in the elite eight crazy?
Michael Litos (1:43 PM)
Yes, I don't think they are getting past Davidson, which is a better-rounded team
John (Nashville)
Everybody seems to like Siena over Vandy. I know the Dores struggle on the road but shouldn't they get to the 2nd round?
Michael Litos (1:44 PM)
Vanderbilt is not the most efficient team and they are very beatable. Shane Foster is a load for them to handle, and they lost to James Madison (a 10-20 team in the Colonial). It's asking a lot. I think the entire country thinks Siena can beat Vanderbilt, and that's the reason why they won't.
Frank Bloomington IN
What do you think of the Seeding? And what do you think of the mid majors having to play each other? It is like they are creating a playin game for midmajors.
Michael Litos (1:45 PM)
There is a lot of smoke about the whole mid-on-mid-major conspiracy. But it's impossible to pull that off. The seeding is curious, especially if you're a Butler fan, for instance.
Michael Litos (1:46 PM)
Enjoy this weekend! I think it's the best of the year, and root for the mids!
Buzzmaster (1:47 PM)
Next up we have Wes Rucker, ready to take all your SEC questions!
Brad (North Carolina)
Did Kentucky deserve to get in over someone like Arizona ST
Wesley Rucker (1:49 PM)
It is hard when you boil it down to individual teams. I think there are good arguments for Kentucky. But if I had to choose, I would go with Arizona State, but Kentucky being there does not bother me.
Joe (Davenport, IA)
Is Tennessee good enough to beat UNC?
Wesley Rucker (1:50 PM)
On a neutral floor, yes; but I do not think they will experience that. But I would not be shocked if Tennessee beat them. And I think Wayne Chism is a very good post player who could give Hanbrough trouble.
Jeff (Detroit, MI)
What do you think of Georgia and its chances against Xavier?
Wesley Rucker (1:52 PM)
Good question. I have seen both teams in person, and although Xavier should win, I would not be surpised to see Georgia adcance. Gaines is a great PG. I think the Bulldogs will hang with them. And remember they almost beat Tennessee. But if Gaines keeps getting in foul trouble they will be in big trouble.
Jerry (St. Louis, MO)
Can Arkansas make it into the Sweet 16?
Wesley Rucker (1:54 PM)
Beating UNC in North Carolina is a tall order. Arkansas can throw all very athletic guys, all 6'8 taller, at Hanbrough. But I do not seem them beating UNC in North Carolina. And Williams needs to start playing better. But they have a very physically imposing front court, since I have not seen the Lopez twins in person.
Dave (Shelby, MI)
With Patrick Paterson gone - is UK a one and done like I think they are?
Wesley Rucker (1:56 PM)
I think they have a chance. I think they could make the Sweet 16. They shorten the game, and when you have guys hitting a lot of shot clock beating jumpers, with the way they defend, they have a shot to beat just about anyone. I think they may be one and done, but they may make the Sweet 16.
Ross (Tn)
Tennessee and memphis? likely national championship game?
Wesley Rucker (1:58 PM)
I would never say likely. I think those two teams are plauying in the two toughest regions. It is hard to say that will happen. I like UNC in the East and Texas in the South. I think the poor FT shooting will hurt Memphis down the road. Although both those teams you bring up have enough talent to beat anyone.
Dave (Shelby, MI)
Miss. St., the way they play defense, I think they could serious burst Memphis' bubble - whats your take on their potential 2nd rd matchup?
Wesley Rucker (2:00 PM)
I think we are sharing a brain, because that is my upset special. I think the Bulldogs match up very well with memphis. I also like Gordon's chances of hanging with Rose. I really do believe that they will beat Memphis if they advance to the second round. Miss. St. really defends well in the post.
Buzzmaster (2:01 PM)
Thanks Wes! Andy Glockner is up next!
Buzzmaster (2:03 PM)
Hi everyone. Let's do this.
daniel (waldorf,md)
Does Tennessee have a chance to win the championship with a little luck
Andy Glockner (2:05 PM)
I think they'll need a little luck and a lot of skill. I think the Vols, given their status overall and position a week ago, got the worst draw in the bracket. The second round game is anything but a gimme, and then they might have to beat L'ville and UNC (in Charlotte) just to get to the FF. That's crazy.
Corbino Maryland
I think if Kansas St. beats USC they have a good shot of making to the sweet 16 or the elite 8 what do you think?
Andy Glockner (2:05 PM)
I don't think they will best USC, and if they do, I don't think they'll best Wisconsin.
Scott (Greenville SC)
My final four are Louisville, Kansas, Texas, and UCLA (Kansas to win out)...thoughts?
Andy Glockner (2:06 PM)
I had three of those. I have UNC instead of Louisville. And UCLA to win it all, even tho that somehow has gone from slight sleeper to monster favorite pick all over the internet.
Andy Glockner, ESPN
Hey buzzmaster, why dont we talk about Sienna knockin off Vandy?
Andy Glockner (2:07 PM)
I have seen Siena play twice in person this season and they are fully capable of beating Vandy. No disrespect to the Dores and Kevin Stallings, who does a great job there, but this is the type of team Siena can play with.
Kyle (Philidelphia, PA)
What are the odds of Villinova upsetting Clemson?
Andy Glockner (2:07 PM)
Some of my colleagues like the chances there more than I do. I think Clemson is really good.
Christian (north carolina)
Do you think Georgia's fatigue will be a factor in their first round game?
Andy Glockner (2:08 PM)
No. I think Xavier's talent will be.
Patrick, Phoenix, AZ
Oregon could suprise many people if they get on a run, and potentially match up well with Memphis.
Andy Glockner (2:08 PM)
I think Memphis would love to see Oregon win that first-round game.
Daniel Funk (Dublin OH)
I think if Mt. St. Mary beats UNC, which they will ill bet anything!, they have a good shot of making it to the sweet 16 or even winning it all what do you think?
Andy Glockner (2:09 PM)
UNC is really their only hurdle. They might be favored against the IU/Arkansas winner... ;)
Mike(omaha)
I know this chat is about the NCAA tourney, but did you see Creighton come down from 11 with 3 minutes to edge Rhode Island in a last second 3. By far best game at the qwest.
Andy Glockner (2:09 PM)
I exchanged emails with the Rhody SID afterward. He wasn't very happy. :)
Pat (San Diego)
What do you think of Cornell's chances over Stanford? Another Ivy vs a Pac-10!
Andy Glockner (2:10 PM)
I think that was a very bad draw for Cornell. They have a lot of shooters, but they won't get anything easy in the halfcourt and they won't be able to defend the Lopezes inside.
Kim (WISCONSIN!!!)
So Keith has Wisconsin beat in the first round and my son has them going to the final four (joke!). I'm only taking them to the second round. I love WI, but they just don't seem to do well in the tournament for some reason. What are your thoughts on how far they will go?
Andy Glockner (2:11 PM)
I think it depends on if they see USC in the second round. If K-State is there, I think Wisconsin wins and could get to the EE. If USC is there, that might be a second-round exit. Would be a great coaching duel between Floyd and Ryan.
Eric (andover ,ma)
who do you like in a possible xavier-duke matchup?
Andy Glockner (2:12 PM)
I don't have a real gut feeling about that one. It would be entertaining as heck, though.
Justun (Wisconsin)
What is the 12-5 upset this year? I have Temple Over Mich. St.
Andy Glockner (2:12 PM)
That was mine, too.
Eli (Portland, OR)
Andy, I know you would deny it, but just the way you come off in your chats and podcasts, you really sound like you dispise the Ducks.
Andy Glockner (2:14 PM)
Don't despise the Ducks. I had them making the tourney over ASU. I just don't think they're very good this season and think they would be outgunned by Memphis.
Jeremy (B-town, IN)
If you are Rick Greenspan, who do you make the next coach at IU?
Andy Glockner (2:14 PM)
How about Mark Few?
Butters (Columbus,OH)
Understanding the "Bill Self-destruct Law", I don't see the Golden Flashes of Kent St. being intimidated by the Jayhawks at all. Is there a chance?
Andy Glockner (2:15 PM)
Kansas mauled a couple of good MAC teams already this season, so while Kent is the best of that bunch, I'm not sure the Flashes will intimidate KU, either.
David (Quincy, WA)
Thanks for giving Derrick Low a little love on your home page. What are the chances of a Cougar - Tar Heel playoff in the sweet 16?
Andy Glockner (2:15 PM)
I have WSU making it there and losing to UNC.
Ken (Tampa, FL)
With Bobby Knight complimenting Pitt, I'd say that he likes the way that they are coached. Do you think IU should look Dixon's way? If they did, would Dixon be interested?
Andy Glockner (2:16 PM)
No idea if he'd be interested, but he's done an incredible job at Pitt.
Jake (NYC)
I think if Indiana gets emotional and plays with heart vs. UNC, they could take them down...they have the talent...thoughts?
Andy Glockner (2:16 PM)
They better get emotional and play with heart against Arkansas first.
Justin(H-Town, Md)
Andy, whats the big upset in this years tourniment?
Andy Glockner (2:17 PM)
The biggest first-rounder I picked was Siena over Vandy. I don't think it's a given that Tennessee gets past either Butler or So. Alabama, and that's more because those teams are really good than Tennessee isn't strong.
Brandon (Denver)
Andy, are you crazy? Just saw your pick for "Best Dunker" and you have Chase Budinger? I am a huge AZ fan, but Chase has not exactly been electric this year. He has the ability to throw down some good ones, but there are lots of other guys out there that regularly throw some nasty stuff...see Westbrook, those are some dunks!!
Andy Glockner (2:17 PM)
You must be looking at the wrong guy. I never wrote/posted anything like that. Westbrook has the dunk(s) of the season in my book.
Grabber (Lloyd Harbor, NY)
Hi Andy - any thoughts on Tennessee being the lowest-seeded #2 in the field? They got stuck in UNC's bracket. How did that happen?
Andy Glockner (2:18 PM)
The committee doesn't seed 2s like that. Tennessee was probably the first or second 2-seed and got stcuk with an unlucky draw, partly to keep them "closer" to home, I guess.
Brad (Newport Beach, CA)
How about Creighton and SIU last night? Can a case be made that the Missouri Valley was deserving of more bids?
Andy Glockner (2:19 PM)
Yes, a case could be made for Ill State, but not because of the NIT. High majors often lose games early in that event. Who knows how motivated they are.
Tyler (Tucson)
Joe Lunardi is thinking Arizona vs. UCLA for the West Championship. Your take?
Andy Glockner (2:20 PM)
I have UCLA-Xavier, but I think several teams could make it out of the bottom half.
Kent (Conway, AR)
I have the UCLA/AandM matchup as being a key game in that bracket. I believe AandM can control UCLA and put off the upset. Every few years there's an 8/9 seed that upsets No. 1. I do believe this will be the year. What's your opinion?
Andy Glockner (2:20 PM)
UCLA didn't get a favor with either BYU or AandM in round 2, but I think the Bruins will get past that game.
Kent (Indianapolis, IN)
Andy, what are you're thoughts on the "baby boilers" chances in the tournament? How far will they go?
Andy Glockner (2:21 PM)
They could lose to Baylor or they could make the Elite Eight. I think that half of the West bracket might be the most open of any of the eight bracket halves.
Brandon (DenveR)
Sorry Andy. I was quick to the gun and misread. Gottlieb is the crazy one.
Andy Glockner (2:21 PM)
Well, we all knew that... :)
Joe (Montana)
Out of the top 4 seeds, who do you think is not getting enough attention?
Andy Glockner (2:22 PM)
Stanford and Pitt in Memphis' bracket could do some damage. And everyone is trying to find a way for G'town and Wisconsin not to make the EE, but that very well could be a good and compelling S16 game.
P'Allen (Omaha, NE)
What's your take on Butler? A senior led team that goes 28-3 and they get a 7 seed? Not to mention they have to play S.Ala in Birmingham.
Andy Glockner (2:23 PM)
I thought they got hosed with that combo. Gonzaga was more deserving of that kind of seed, but they got the triple-whammy of cross-country flight/road game/9:25am PT start time. Enjoy that game against Davidson!
Michael (Richmond, VA)
I think Thabeet from UConn can handle UCLA and pull the upset to make it to the EE. Thoughts?
Andy Glockner (2:24 PM)
It could happen. I'm dying to see the Drake-UConn second-round game, though. What a style contrast.
Gerardo (Tempe, AZ)
Andy, toughest 1st round picks for me this year:Butler Vs. S. Alabama Gonzaga Vs. DavidsonMississipi State Vs. OregonMiami Vs. Saint Mary's Who do you have in these matchups? Thanks!
Andy Glockner (2:25 PM)
I suggest you do the exact oppo of what I say in coin flips, but since you asked... Butler, Davidson, Miss State, Saint Mary's
Kyle (NV)
WHo do you have in the UNLV VS KENT STATE GAME?
Andy Glockner (2:25 PM)
Kent in a really close one.
Charles, Memphis TN
John Calipari says the reason free throw percentage isn't a concern is because the Tigers still make more free throws than their opponents. Is that the dumbest thing you have ever heard?
Andy Glockner (2:26 PM)
No, but it doesn't make much sense.
Bob F (Chicago)
Hey Andy - any worries about the Drake vs. WKY matchup? I think the Bulldog will roll, as they were just so dominant in the MVC. Was interested in your thoughts.Go Dawgs!! (Salukis that is, in the NIT).
Andy Glockner (2:27 PM)
I have seen WKU probably four or five times this season (I ever saw that miracle shot that beat them at No. Arizona live, somehow). I haven't walked away all that impressed. I think Drake will handle them.
nate, chapel hill, nc
Hi Andy,Enjoy the podcast-haven't downloaded the latest one-looking forward to the latest one.My final four: UNC/Georgetown/Pittsburgh/Dukea rematch of UNC and Georgetown from last year's elite 8 matchup and a UNC/Duke championship game. I may have to subsitute UCLA over Duke because UCLA is so tough defensively, Duke only wishes they were that strong defensively-but I am always hoping that one year the UNC-DUKE rivalry will extend to the championship game.
Andy Glockner (2:28 PM)
That would be the ultimate bragging rights. I likened it to the US beating Mexico in the 2002 World Cup. Whatever happens, they always have to live with that.Definitely check out today's podcast. We had Jay Bilas on and he did a great job answering some questions about his Selection Sunday comments on the selection process and breaking down some Thursday games.
Alex (Fort Collins,CO)
Andy, you and me have very similar brackets from what you are giving away. Our thought process is very similar as well (can't wait to see Drake and UCONN)! I have Stanford winning it all and I want your point of view. You can tell me your true thoughts, cuz I'll be fine! Thank you!
Andy Glockner (2:29 PM)
I think that's a bit far for the Cardinal, but it's not crazy to think they could come out of that region.
Andrew (MD)
So far, to my knowlege never has all four #1 seeded teams from each region made it to the final four, I have UNC in there deffinitly, but what about the other three regions? What do you think?
Andy Glockner (2:30 PM)
All four 1s have never made it in the 64-team era. I think it could be pretty close this season. There's a chalky feel in the air as the top 6-7 teams have been clearly better than the rest all season.
Andy Glockner (2:30 PM)
Thanks as always for all the questions. Time to pass the torch.
Buzzmaster (2:31 PM)
Thanks Andy!
Buzzmaster (2:32 PM)
At 2:45 we have Brian Dohn, from the LA Daily News coming on to take your Pac10 questions.
Buzzmaster (2:32 PM)
Until then, let's chat.
Buzzmaster (2:33 PM)
I was just looking at the SportsNation bracket and about one third have UNC winning it all, by far the most popular pick.
Buzzmaster (2:33 PM)
Who do you guys like as your upset picks?
Brennan (Sudbury, Ontario)
Buzzmaster, what's your Final Four?
Buzzmaster (2:34 PM)
I haven't finalized the picks yet, but I think I'm going with UNC, UCLA, Georgetown and Pitt.
Alan (Indianapolis)
st. joes over Oklahoma
John (Indian Trail, NC)
BYU over AandM AND UCLA!
Brandon, Omaha
Michigan State buzz. A Tom Izzo coached team always is dangerous in March. If Drew Neitzel gets hot, they could go a long way.

Kyle (NV)
George Mason over Notre Dame
Buzzmaster (2:36 PM)
I was thinking that too. But then I saw my main man Keith Lipscomb saying earlier in the chat that he thinks Notre Dame is a much stronger team. He made me rethink some things on that one.
Scott (Fairbanks, AK)
Temple over Michigan St.
Alan (Indianapolis)
w. virginia over Duke in 2nd round
Buzzmaster (2:36 PM)
I think there will be about 60 3's taken in that game.

Adam, Madison NH
Indiana over UNC, someone has to say it
Matt (AR):
Kansas St. over USC. Beasley vs. Mayo
Kyle (NV)
I really like Baylor over Purdue
Nate (UT)
Does anyone like George Mason over ND? I think that will be a good game.
John (Indian Trail, NC)
Hey Buzzmaster, why isn't anyone talking about the BYU/Texas AandM game?
Buzzmaster (2:40 PM)
Good question. I think that's a pretty evenly matched game.
Jake (Texas)
I don't get it why are so many people saying UT is going to lose in the second round. This is a team that should be a 1 seed and has played the hard SOS in the nation.
Chris (West Virginia)
I REALLY like Mt. St. Mary's over UNC.
Buzzmaster (2:41 PM)
Thanks for the laugh, Chris.
Gerry (AZ)
I had GM beating ND but after more and more thought I changed ND is just alittle better in my mind GM is not the Dream team they were 2 years ago
Mike (Ont)
I say2 number 1's make it to the final four
Ryan H (B-MORE MD)
I like george mason!! that is one of my huge upsets
Buzzmaster (2:41 PM)
Here's Brian!
Brandon (Denver)
Brain, how many Pac10 teams do you think realistically can make the Sweet 16? Elite 8?
Brian Dohn (2:44 PM)
Sweet 16, I would say two, and Elite Eight, the same. Those teams are UCLA and Stanford. I don't think the other teams have enough depth or are consistent enough to do it.
Andrew (CO)
Hey Brian! It seems to me UCLA gets quite a few breaks, from last years "home game" against KU in the elite 8, to the closing moments in 2 games this year. Are they really that good? I have KU over UCLA in the title game 76-73. Thoughts?
Brian Dohn (2:45 PM)
That's a pretty good pick. UCLA could have trouble with Kansas' athleticism and their depth. I don't think they get breaks, but California is so big that they have a lot of places to host. They will get a break with Anaheim and Phoenix.
Nick (IN)
Brian, the last 19 NCAA champs averaged at least 74 ppg. How does UCLA break that trend? (They won't)
Brian Dohn (2:46 PM)
That's always been the question with Howland-coached teams---are they going to score enough? They did not in the last two years. The one thing they did have going for them is the inside-outside game. They have Kevin Love inside, and you would think he's a senior wtih the way he handles himself. They need to prove they can score come crunch time with the elite teams.
Chris Portland Oregon
Does anyone think oregon can make it to the Elite 8 again this year like last?
Brian Dohn (2:47 PM)
I'm sure the Ducks do, but other than that, I don't think so. To be honest, i don't think they should have been in the field! The Pac-10 knows their style, but against other teams, they could surprise. But honestly, I don't expect much from them.
John (Indian Trail, NC)
Hey Brian, on Friday night, can we chat about how BYU is going to be the upset special over UCLA on Sat.?
Brian Dohn (2:48 PM)
We can chat all you'd like about it! UCLA is concerned about that second game. They know whoever comes out of that game won't be a pushover, especially since BYU has some older, more mature guys who won't be concerned with playing UCLA.
Mark Los Angeles
Hey Brian, Do you see either USC or Arizona making a run in the tourney after the kind of season they had in the pac-10 (especially Arizona)
Brian Dohn (2:50 PM)
I do not see Arizona making that run. that team is in complete flux. They finished the season terribly. If USC's kids feel like playing, they have the most talented starting five in the west. They don't have much depth, and some kids had problems showing up in games for them. Davon Jefferson is one of those talents, though it doesn't always translate into results.
Matt (Los Angeles)
Brian, what's the general feeling like of this year's team versus 06 and 07 (when they had Afflalo)does it seem like they are on a mission to win even more so than the past two years?
Brian Dohn (2:51 PM)
No, I think that's overrated. They have more confidence because they finally know they have an inside presence to go with the outside game. If the outside shots aren't falling, dump it to Kevin Love. The difference isn't desire, it's talent.
Brian (LA)
Brian,Not really a pac-10 question, but who's your final four?
Brian Dohn (2:52 PM)
Unfortunately, it's too many 1 and 2-seeds. My final four is North Carolina, Georgetown, UCLA, and Texas. Too many elite teams this year.
Mark (Chicago)
Do you think Stanford has good enough guard play to make it to the Final Four? This is the pick that is causing me a great deal of stress.
Brian Dohn (2:52 PM)
Not at all. I do not like Mitch Johnson running the point. I thought that was the reason UCLA was running the point this year. It's my big concern with Stanford and why I don't have them going deep.
gary (WI)
2nd round. Can USC beat my Badgers?
Brian Dohn (2:53 PM)
Yes they can, because USC has incredible athleticism, and they have three guys who I think will get drafted this year--Mayo, Jefferson, and Taj Gibson. Also, Tim Floyd is an incredible coach.
Chris (LA CA)
Those Lopez twins could be a factor with size. What is more important to you, size and team work, a la UCLA/stanford or one great player and athletic team
Brian Dohn (2:54 PM)
Size and teamwork by far. One athletic player can be shut down by talented coaches and teams.
Jeff (Knoxville, TN)
Brian, do you think this is one of the more rounded tournaments we have seen in past years? I think that almost all the 1-3 seeds are legitmate contenders and even a couple of the 4 seeds. Obviously, this is on paper, and not counting the magic that happens come tourney time.
Brian Dohn (2:55 PM)
I don't agree with that. I think the top few teams are so much better than the others that there could be a mad scramble. If you break it down, five or six teams are much better than the rest.
Bob (SF Bay Area)
Brian, love your blog, my heart wants Kevin Love back at UCLA to make another run with Jrue and co. next year, but I think it's in Love's best interest to take the money and run. Not much upside to coming back, and there's way too much risk of injury. What do you think?
Brian Dohn (2:56 PM)
I think I have a better chance of playing at UCLA next year than Kevin Love does.
Jason (Chi-town)
Can you talk a little about the Lopez twins? What are their flaws and what type of team can exploit them, thanks
Brian Dohn (2:57 PM)
The teams that can exploit them are those that can run up and down the court and get Stanford to play the up-tempo style, or ones that double-team the low post, where you can push Brook out. Brook is by far the better of the two right now. The key is to not let Mitch Johnson get the ball inside to them.
Chris (New York, NY)
What is going to the be 5/12 upset, if any?
Brian Dohn (2:57 PM)
I was looking at that, and I'll give you two: WKU over Drake, and Temple over Michigan State.
Nate (UT)
When the tourny tips off, what 1st round Pac10 game is a must watch and who wins?
Brian Dohn (2:58 PM)
USC-Kansas State, by far. It's OJ Mayo vs. Michael Beasley. I picked Kansas State to win that game, because I think Beasley can be just that good.
Robert (Raleigh NC)
Out of the 3 4 and 5 seeds, which team has the best chance to get to the final 4?
Brian Dohn (2:59 PM)
I'd say Connecticut because of their inside presence to go along with guard play and a tremendous coach. They just need to go back to how they were playing a few weeks ago.
Brian Dohn (2:59 PM)
Thanks for having me, and enjoy the tourney!
Buzzmaster (3:00 PM)
Fantasy guru Keith Lipscomb is up next!
Keith Lipscomb (3:01 PM)
Thank you, Brian...and we'll keep the ship a-sailin' here. If there's a matchup that hasn't been discussed that you'd like to ask a question on, go for it and I'll do my best to get to it in the next hour!
Jonathan (Fairfax, Virginia)
What do you think about Marquette upsetting Stanford?
Keith Lipscomb (3:03 PM)
I have that upset in my bracket, but it will be imperative that the Marquette guards play well offensively in that game for it to happen. It will hard to handle the Lopez twins down low, but Marquette has an advantage in the backcourt in that matchup. If the Eagles can control the tempo and get up and down a little bit, their chances improve.
Beau (Philly)
Why is everyone so down on Duke this postseason? Granted the lost in the first round last year, but everyone still picks Kansas to go far and they have blown it big time the past couple of years. What gives?
Keith Lipscomb (3:06 PM)
It's not that I'm down on Duke as much as I am up on Xavier. Anytime a team is dependent on 3-point shooting, there's less margin for error and Duke is a team that takes a bunch of perimeter shots and relies on turning opponents over, since it doesn't dominate the boards, either. As far as Kansas is concerned, there are still some out there apprehensive to advance them to the Final Four this year. I think Kansas happens to have an easier road than Duke this year, which also factors in.
Brian Michigan
Does Indiana have a chance to upset UNC in the second round?
Keith Lipscomb (3:10 PM)
Of course they have a chance, but it would be a pretty big upset. UNC is the best rebounding team in the country and although Indiana also is a solid team on the glass, the Hoosiers will have to limit second chances and knock down their 3s in order to beat them. There's no doubt that when on top of their game, White and Gordon are among the best 1-2 punches in the nation.
Esai (NYC)
Hey Keith -- any thoughts on a Winthrop upset? They won't be intimidated, that's for sure...
Keith Lipscomb (3:13 PM)
You're right about that. I'm really impressed that they are back in the dance as a 13-seed. They lost a lot from last year's squad, and even though they had a lot of talent that just needed the chance to prove it, it's not easy to do what they've done. I think Wazzu will win the game, because I happen to like their 3-guard set better, but if Low, Rochestie and Weaver aren't on point, and if Michael Jenkins and Chris Gaynor ARE, it could most certainly happen. Both teams are very experienced.
Brice (Chippewa Falls, WI)
I haven't seen them play much but I love Kent St. Is there anyway they can hang with Kansas in the second round?
Keith Lipscomb (3:14 PM)
I got to see Kent State quite a bit this season and they don't always play the prettiest ball. And they'll try to make it as ugly as possible against KU. But I don't see how they'll be able to handle the many horses the Jayhawks have to throw at them. But you can count on the Flashes trying to control tempo and limit possessions to stay in it.
Len (Southeast Central Southwestern region of Los Angeles, CA)
Is Gonzaga too big for Davidson?
Keith Lipscomb (3:15 PM)
UCLA and North Carolina weren't too big for them, so that won't be the case. I expect those teams to scratch and claw at each other all day Friday.
Matt (Chicago)
Hi KeithI have a follow-up thought to a collage of above posts. Contrary to some above posts, I really think Baylor matches up quite poorly with Purdue. Purdue has dominated guard-oriented teams this season given their pressure man defense. I think it'll be difficult to get past Xavier, but if they do am I wrong to think they'll take out Duke (assuming the Blue Devils didn't lose)? I don't think Duke is "overrated", but I do think Purdue and Duke are very similar with the Boilers bringing a slightly better defensive effort.
Keith Lipscomb (3:17 PM)
The way Baylor plays is different than most around the country, so it's an interesting matchup to me. But if Purdue can get to the Sweet 16, there is no question they could beat Duke. Purdue is a talented team that will only be better next season.
Harrison (Atlanta, GA)
Looking at a possible 2nd match up between Wash St and ND, who do you think will prevail? Guard play usually succeeds in the tourney, but ND has the post presence in Harangody. Who you have?
Keith Lipscomb (3:19 PM)
I really like Notre Dame in that matchup. The fact that they've got such a nice inside-outside attack, along with the way Tory Jackson has played, I just like the Irish's chances in that matchup. But you know Tony Bennett's boys will come to play and it won't be easy.
Blaine (Oregon)
Keith-- Is Oregon a bit overlooked? I mean they should have beat ucla twice, losing those games in the final minutes, along with many other games. If the ducks could have put teams away I think they would of been looking at a 4 seed or around there. Saying that Memphis isnt a complete lock for that game right?
Keith Lipscomb (3:21 PM)
Well, there's no question that Oregon is talented. Hey, they could have a couple NBA players on this team. The key is putting teams away, which is a big concern for me, considering the teams they would have to play have strong offenses. Memphis isn't a complete lock, no, but Oregon has to get over that hump starting Friday night.
Bob (Wisconsin)
what do you think texas AandM or BYU
Keith Lipscomb (3:25 PM)
It's a very intriguing matchup to me. BYU is a good shooting team and have some serious offensive weaponry. If Texas AandM can do a good job on Plaisted, maybe get him in foul trouble, things immediately swing to the Aggies' advantage in my mind. But I think Josh Carter's ability to knock down threes is also important in this one. I picked BYU, but it's a very tough call. I think all the 8-9s are tough to call, actually.
Joe (Charlotte)
Keith, everyone at ESPN either has Clemson rolling into the Sweet 16, or being dumped by Villanova in Round 1. Where do you stand with the Tigers?
Keith Lipscomb (3:26 PM)
I'm in between. I have them beating Nova and losing to Vandy.
Tim (Towson)
As far as I can tell, Butler and South Alabama are the same team ... the only advantage for Butler is experience, and the only advantage for USA is location (the game is in Birmingham). So what wins out, experience or location?
Keith Lipscomb (3:29 PM)
They are actually very different teams, in terms of their plan of attack. USA also rebounds the ball much better than Butler. I'm going with experience, but a pure scorer like Demetric Bennett can make the Jags dangerous for more than a round if he gets hot.
Bob (Connecticut)
How far can uconn go.
Keith Lipscomb (3:31 PM)
I wouldn't have them getting past UCLA, but could they match up with them? They sure could and if Thabeet plays like he can, and the UConn guards play their best, they could take down the Bruins. I think they're the only team that could stop UCLA from an Elite Eight appearance.
Tim (Cleveland, Ohio)
Can we PLEASE stop labeling Duke as a "three point shooting team"? I am getting very frustrated with the fact that Duke is constantly being pigeonholed as a team that cannot win without the three. The fact is, the three is an important part of their offense, but by no means is it the entire offense. Tennessee has attempted more threes than Duke this year (and made fewer, by the way) - are they being called a "three point shooting team"? Memphis has only attempted two fewer threes than Duke - yet everyone LOVES their athleticism. Why not say that Memphis and Tennessee cannot possibly win the tournament because they are "too reliant on the three"? Only three teams in the field have attempted more free-throws than Duke (UNC, Memphis, and UCONN) - they obviously are getting to the basket and getting fouled...
Keith Lipscomb (3:33 PM)
Right on, Tim. No question Duke is more than a 3-point shooting team. Sorry if I made it sound like they are one-dimensional. As a No. 2 seed with plenty of talent, that's obviously not the case. A lot of those free throws come off of the pressure they put on teams and their ability to push the ball, too, which is tough for opponents to stop.
Joey (Hudson, WI)
Whats your lowest seeded team that has the best shot at the title?
Keith Lipscomb (3:35 PM)
Well, when you're saying "a shot", I'll take it to mean that they have the makeup of a team that could get it together and make a run. I think the lowest seed I could see doing it would be a team like Michigan State or Notre Dame (No. 5s), or maybe Marquette if they really shot the ball well. But I don't have any of those teams going past the Sweet 16, personally.
Bill (Orlando Florida)
How far will Louisville go?
Keith Lipscomb (3:37 PM)
I have them losing the Elite Eight to Tennessee, but that would be a great game. Beating UNC wont' be easy, but if they got there, they'd obviously be playing great basketball and are talented enough to pull it off. A Final Four is not out of the question. I just didn't pick them to get there.
Mike (Lexington, KY)
History is not always a good barometer to make picks but the Big 12 has won one national championship in their history. Tell me why I or anyone should pick a Big 12 team to win it all? These are by no means the most talented KU or UT teams we have seen??
Keith Lipscomb (3:39 PM)
Actually, no Big 12 team has won a national championship since the conference was formed. And only Kansas in '03 finished as a runner-up. But each year has to be judged on its own merit, so if it's not the most talented teams KU or UT has had, it doesn't mean they can't win 6 in a row this year.
Steven ( San Antonio)
In my bracket, I have Arizona beating Duke in the second round. Is that a good decision?
Keith Lipscomb (3:41 PM)
I would like Duke in that matchup, Steven. While Arizona has been a lot better when it has had Wise and Bayless in the lineup together -- which they do now -- Duke is very talented and has multiple options at its disposal. I think Budinger would have to have a big game in order for the Cats to win.
Lee (Starkville MS)
Why is Mississippi State not getting any media attention, and do you think that the should have gotten a higher seed then 8?
Keith Lipscomb (3:43 PM)
They are a very talented team for an 8-seed, no doubt. Their lack of a quality non-conference win is what landed them the seed they got, though.
Zach (New York, NY)
UGH! Kansas v. Georgetown Elite 8. Who ya got?!?!
Keith Lipscomb (3:44 PM)
I'd take Kansas in that game, because I like Kansas' guards better than the Hoyas'. I think the frontcourts would battle to a stalemate, but I like KU in that one.
Sean (Pittsburgh, PA)
Of the #4 seeds, is Pitt the most likely to see the Final Four?
Keith Lipscomb (3:47 PM)
They way they are playing right now, it's hard to argue with that. I don't think Wazzu would beat UNC and Vandy struggled down the stretch, so I'm not sure if they'll get it back. It would be either Pitt or UConn, but Pitt's toughness would serve them well against Memphis.
John ( Minnesota)
Is there any chance for UNLV in the second round vs Kansas because i hava sneaking hunch that could happen
Keith Lipscomb (3:49 PM)
The big strike against UNLV for me is their poor shooting from the field. They're already at a size disadvantage against them, and they don't shoot it well, so I think that's a bad matchup for them.
Tim (Chicago)
Do you get smarter as the day goes on or are you still a moron? Hold onto your bracket entry fee for as long as you can. That's the last time you'll ever see that money. Cal State Fullerton? Go Titans! Laughable.
Keith Lipscomb (3:51 PM)
So harsh, Tim. So harsh. I'm not saying CSF is better than Wisconsin. I think we all know who would win 80 times out of 100, but they play the game once and upsets happen every year. You've got to go on a hunch sometimes and this is mine this year.
Andrew (Bakersfield)
hey keith? who you have winning it all? and why?
Keith Lipscomb (3:54 PM)
I took UCLA over Tennessee in my title game. I like UCLA because they do most everything well and there isn't a defense they haven't seen yet, considering the schedule they've played. Kevin Love is just a winner. Darren Collison supplies the daggers and the way Russell Westbrook has played this season has made them my team to beat. This is, of course, as long as Love and Mbah a Moute can stay healthy. I expect them to make it through or else I wouldn't have picked them.
John (Louisville, Ky)
Keith, there is always a 5 vs 12 upset every year... which one of those matchups do you see being the "guarantee"?
Keith Lipscomb (3:55 PM)
There are no guarantees in the Big Dance. That's for sure. The 12 seed I like most is Western Kentucky, just because I like the matchup with Drake. The one 12 seed I don't like much at all is George Mason over Notre Dame.
Gary (PA)
What do you think about any Big Ten teams making the final four?
Keith Lipscomb (3:58 PM)
Not the greatest of years for the Big Ten. While I mentioned that Michigan State was one of the lower-seeded teams that could do it, I don't expect that to happen. Wisconsin is obviously the best team in the conference and, although they've got some tough matchups in their bracket, they are a tough enough team to pull through it all. Bo Ryan's a very good coach. Just because I picked an upset in Round 1 doesn't mean I don't realize how tough Wisconsin can be, especially at this time of year.
Brad:(Franklin,IN)
Keith, I saw that you made a comment on Butler's Matt Howard earlier. Obviously he's no super freshman, but what are your thoughts?
Keith Lipscomb (4:00 PM)
I feel like he was the missing piece for that team. They've got plenty of perimeter firepower, whether it be Graves, Campbell or Betko...and Green is dynamic off the bounce, so adding an interior presence with his basketball IQ really completed the puzzle in my opinion.
Keith Lipscomb (4:01 PM)
All right, well I'm going to hand it off to Kyle Whelliston, who will take your questions for the next 30 minutes or so. See you after that!
Kyle Whelliston (4:02 PM)
Thanks, Keith! I'm Kyle, I'm in between Dayton and the Birmingham pod here. I've seen most of these mid-major teams play with my own eyes, and you probably have some questions. For the next half-hour, I'll do my best to give coherent answers.
Gene (California)
Do you think Gonzaga is a better all around team then Davidson?
Kyle Whelliston (4:05 PM)
I don't. Gonzaga's shown a weakness for turnovers, and when they are outmuscled on the glass they get beat. Can't lose the board and turnover battles and win. Davidson's bigs, Sander and Meno, will have to have huge games, though.
Jason (Fresno, California)
Kyle-- Winthrop toppled Notre Dame last year, what do you think they're chances are against Wazzu? Since I have Wazzu winning two rounds.
Kyle Whelliston (4:07 PM)
Keeping control of the basketball is as hott as the two-point dunk shot, in my opinion... and few teams do it as well as Wazzu. Gotta respect that. Winthrop's defense is solid, but they've had a lot of trouble scoring points. The Eagles need to get Michael Jenkins the ball a lot, because they win when he scores in double figures, and they don't when he doesn't.
Mike (Lexington, KY)
I have not seen either play so how does St. Joes match up with Oklahoma?
Kyle Whelliston (4:09 PM)
I've only seen OU play against mids, and they've struck me as kinda lunky. Saint Joe's is a machine that needs to have all its working parts in order to win a game like this -- Calathes hitting 3's, Nivins sliding underneath defenses, Carr running all over the place and nailing jumpers.
Matt (South Bend, IN)
What are your thoughts on Boise State? Nice road win in Las Cruces the other night. Can they make Louisville sweat?
Kyle Whelliston (4:12 PM)
Both teams prefer the paint to their (flawed) guard play, but it's Big East size up against WAC size. A secretary in an office bracket pool can recognize the difference there. Boise just needs to make shots to keep it close, and since they're the best-shooting team in the nation, I like their chances to hang around.
Scoot (Syracuse)
How about Siena, any chance they pull the upset?
Kyle Whelliston (4:13 PM)
I don't think I've found anyone yet who thinks they can't. They're both very athletic teams that get up and down the floor, and a full on track meet would make this a real toss up. It's probably the most popular upset pick going, but remember what last year's was: Winthrop over ND. That one happened.
Jason (Fresno, California)
I haven't heard anything about Siena this year, and it's been said that Vandy has been inconsistant as of late. Do you think the MAAC was strong enough for the Saints to give Vandy a run for their money?
Kyle Whelliston (4:15 PM)
Lots and lots of Siena questions today. It's lost to the shifting sands of time, but the MAAC was brutal this year. Any of four very evenly-matched teams could have survived that tourney. Siena did, and they're as battle-tested as you can be coming out of a one-bid conference.
Laguna Pier, MI
Why am I liking Oral Roberts over Pitt so much?
Kyle Whelliston (4:17 PM)
I don't think you're that crazy. Pitt gives up a lot of two-point shots, and that makes me confident that ORU's bigs can get close to the basket. The G'Eagles have a 6-10 dude named Shawn King, who if he's on his game and out of foul trouble, could be a real hero.
Mike (Portland, OR)
Kyle, I've enjoyed all of the chats you'd had this year and I have to say you are one of the few analysts at ESPN that earn my respect for being unbiased (except of course towards mids!) However, I am absolutely PUZZLED by how many people are picking Davidson over Gonzaga! GU is bigger, longer and probably faster. I agree it will come down to rebounding and drive and that the Zags will lose if it plays as bad as they did in WCC final but PLEASE justify why you think they are getting dogged so bad??? And don't use the stupid "travel" excuse...they have a private plane...
Kyle Whelliston (4:20 PM)
I'm totally biased against the power conferences, but reality is biased against me. I'm not overwhelmingly in the Davidson camp on this game, a lot's got to go right. The bigs have to step up. They've got to stay close enough to make the crowd (which will definitely be pro-them) a factor.
Kyle Whelliston (4:20 PM)
And that private plane is part of the reason why I feel that the Zags graduated this level long ago.
Eric (Indy)
What are your thoughts on expanding the field to 128 teams? I think this is a great idea!
Kyle Whelliston (4:22 PM)
I'll go cover field hockey instead if that happens. Look at the .500 teams in the CBI, that's who you're letting in if it's 128 or even 96. I've long been a proponent of a return to the 32-team bracket -- champions only!
kgsmith (rochester,new york)
how come i cant see my name
Kyle Whelliston (4:22 PM)
Do you see it now? There it is.
Grabber (Lloyd Harbor, NY)
Hi Kyle- very few of us have seen Drake play this year. How do you see Drake/UConn shaking out?
Kyle Whelliston (4:24 PM)
Drake's as close to an actual swarm of bees that I've seen. They're little, they're everywhere, and they won't quit. From what I've seen of Connecticut this year, I don't think the Huskies would respond well to that.
Mike (Lexington, KY)
There is not one logical reason to expand the tournament to 128 unless you are one of those that think everyone should get in because that is the American way?? Expanding the tournament would cheapen the field and make for 60 to 64 terrible matchups?
Kyle Whelliston (4:26 PM)
Most of the people who want this are TV people looking for extra revenue and coaches who want to be able to tell their AD's that they shouldn't fire them 'cause they made the Tournament. If that happened, why hold Championship Week at all?
RGR(Jaxsonville, FL)
Who wins the ESPN deathmatch bewtween 8 and 9 seeds The Buzz and The Pulse?
Kyle Whelliston (4:28 PM)
The Buzz is totally underrated.
Matt (Des Moines, IA)
Kyle, first off love the midmajority! Second, doesn't Western Kentucky fit into perfectly with what Drake has seen all year in the MVC? No big man presence but real strong guard play. And with the lack of defense (giving up 88 to SIU!!) Shouldn't Drake roll?
Kyle Whelliston (4:30 PM)
Thanks, Matt. You make a great point about WKU. There are enough parallels to Illinois State to inspire a 2,000-word essay. WKU's defense has really improved as the year has gone on, but I think Drake has too much oomph for WKU to handle.
Erik (Richmond, VA)
Great idea for the tournament - lets let everyone play, we wont keep score, and everyone gets a trophy at the end. Fans will get to spend a Monday night in April watching a 3 hour reel of every team's season highlights set to a "one shining moment" loop. Would that make everyone happy? What do you think?
Kyle Whelliston (4:31 PM)
No child left behind!
Kyle Whelliston (4:32 PM)
OK, that's my half-hour. We're going to hand it back to the well-rested Keith Lipscomb, the triple-shifting star of our relay team today.
Keith Lipscomb (4:33 PM)
Thanks a lot, Kyle. We all love the midmajority! Let's finish this thing up strong.
George (Philadelphia, PA)
How far do you think Villanova, St. Joe's and Temple will make it in this year's tournament?
Keith Lipscomb (4:34 PM)
I don't think any of them escape the first weekend, George.
Keith Lipscomb (4:37 PM)
As much as Mitch Johnson has improved, I'm not sure I trust him to lead them that far. Anthony Goods just isn't a good enough shooter to rely on him. So, I guess my answer is no. But when you have a couple bigs like they have, it IS possible to negate that deficit in the backcourt.
Tom (Houston)
I understand why you have Duke going out (a strong Xavier team), but why is there not a single expert picking Duke for the Final Four.. NOT ONE!! 4 of Duke's 5 losses are all to highly seeded NCAA Tournament teams (Carolina, Pitt, Clemson, Miami). AND, last time I checked they had the most successful tournament coach in history and a 2 seed. NOT ONE EXPERT? Why do you think this is?
Keith Lipscomb (4:39 PM)
That's a very good question. And if you're looking for a team to pick in your Final Four that could give you an advantage in your group's bracket, they would be a strong candidate. It's not often that a No. 2 seed would fit that description, but you're right, Tom.I'm guessing that people just like UCLA enough that they don't think Duke can beat them. But there's no doubt that would be a great game if it were to happen.
Nate (Portland, OR)
Who is the first 1-seed to lose and to who? And is an all 1-seed Final Four realistic this year?
Keith Lipscomb (4:41 PM)
In my bracket, I actually have UNC being beaten in Charlotte by Tennessee, but I reluctantly have the other three top seeds in the Final Four. Sure, an all-No. 1 Final Four is realistic, since all four teams are strong, but I think there are too many good teams out there and don't expect it to happen.
Keith Lipscomb (4:42 PM)
Allow me to pose a question to you all with the toughest game you've had to pick in Round 1?
Juan (Shoob City, Alabama)
WKU vs. Drake
ryan (melrose,ma)
Gonzaga-Davidson.
Jason (California)
Kansas State versus USC for sure!
Sam (Knoxville, TN)
Toughest Pick... Indiana/Arkansas
Jeff (Anderson, SC)
Temple vs. Michigan State
John (Hartford)
It's a tie between USC K St. and Gonzaga Davidson
Keith Lipscomb (4:44 PM)
Thanks, everyone. Wanted to get your pulse as well.
Andy (Chicago, IL)
Keith, am I crazy for thinking South Alabama could beat Tennessee in the 2nd round? It's practically a home game for them.
Keith Lipscomb (4:47 PM)
You're not crazy. USA can play. They lost in double-OT at Vandy in November and beat Mississippi State. Like I mentioned earlier, I think Demetric Bennett is one of the best scorers in the country. He just knows how to get buckets and when he's hot, look out. He had 39 in the Mississippi State game, and 25 vs. Vandy. I'm interested to see if it would really be like a home game, considering how well Tennessee travels.
Daniel (Las Vegas, NV)
What region is sure to be filled with upsets?
Keith Lipscomb (4:49 PM)
Yeah, Daniel. Every year (except for last year, of course), there seems to be one bracket that you just X-out and move on. If I had to pick one, I'd say the Midwest has the most potential with teams like Kent St., Davidson, K-State, Villanova, Siena all capable of pulling off an upset in the first round.
Jason (Tulsa, OK)
I won my bracket game last year, so I've got a reputation to keep up ;)Who's the team no one's talking about that can get to the final four?Louisville? Marquette?
Keith Lipscomb (4:51 PM)
If you're trying to go off the board with a team, there's no doubt that Marquette would be that type of choice. The presence of UNC in Charlotte hurts Louisville's chances (and Tennessee's, too, for that matter). But they are definitely a good enough team to get there.
Mark Detroit
Wisconsin is a team that you have heard relatively little about since the brackets came out. I have them in the final four. What are your thoughts on their chances of making a run in the tournament?
Keith Lipscomb (4:53 PM)
While I mentioned earlier that I decided to pick CS Fullerton as my wild upset pick in the first round (you gotta pick one, don't you?), I think Wisconsin is always a tough out in the tourney. They are smart with the ball, rebound well and have solid veterans. I worry about who takes the shot when they really need it, especially with Trevon Hughes banged up.
Ben (Atlanta)
Do u think UGA will be Xavier
Keith Lipscomb (4:54 PM)
I really don't, Ben. I think Xavier is a very good team and a tough team for Georgia to deal with, because of superior talent AND depth.
Justin (Salt Lake, UT)
Is there a team that for the last two weeks you really talked yourself into as a Sweet 16 sleeper, but has really no shot because of the matchups they received? A team like Kentucky or St. Joe's comes to my mind.
Keith Lipscomb (4:56 PM)
I thought maybe Mississippi State, because of Varnado and Rhodes in the frontcourt, combined with the dynamic Jamont Gordon, but getting Memphis in Round 2 doesn't help. Also, I thought if South Alabama got a different draw, I would like them more. I really like Butler's experience.
Daniel (Memphis, TN)
Keith, will Memphis win the championship this year? Why or why not?
Keith Lipscomb (4:57 PM)
I think they'll come awful close. I have them losing to UCLA in the Final Four. If they don't win, I suspect it would be either free throws or foul trouble to someone like Joey Dorsey as the easy answers why.
Kenny (Las Vegas, NV)
UNLV to beat Kent St, Kansas onto the sweet 16!!!!!
Keith Lipscomb (4:58 PM)
While I don't expect two wins out the Rebs, it does seem they're not getting enough respect in their matchup against Kent State. At least not in this chat today or in other places I've heard/read.
Will (Indiana)
How far will Purdue go? Sweet 16?
Keith Lipscomb (4:59 PM)
The Boilers are a real X-factor for me. They could lose to Baylor in the first round or get as far as the Elite Eight, in my opinion. I personally don't have them lasting past this weekend, though.
Keith Lipscomb (5:01 PM)
Well, that's going to wrap it up for our bracket chat. I hope you all enjoyed the back-and-forth. I definitely did. Best of luck in your groups in the Tournament Challenge game. You can sign up all the way up to just before the games begin tomorrow around noon eastern!
